    Podcast Summary

    • Societal DialoguesThe discourse covers mafia influence in NYC, taboo subjects in Latinx communities, insights into Donald Trump's mindset, body positivity, and understanding fat and fascia, highlighting increased awareness and discourse in various societal issues.

For years, the mafia held power in New York City, using fear and extortion to manipulate people, until the murder of Carmine Galante sparked a change in law enforcement's resolve to take action against organized crime. Meanwhile, in a lighter context, podcasts like Senorasek's Ed tackle taboo topics like sex and sexuality within Latinx communities, while stories about Donald Trump’s mindset are shared in fire and fury. Additionally, discussions about body positivity highlight learning to appreciate one’s self, despite societal pressures. The talk also delves into complex interactions of fat and fascia in our body, simplifying how they affect movement and health into five categories. All these areas represent significant societal dialogues, whether in addressing criminal activities or personal well-being, suggesting a shift toward openness and awareness in various aspects of life.

    • Fascia and MovementFascia supports movement but can also trap fat, leading to "stuck fat". Correcting movement patterns through specific techniques can release this fat and improve overall health.

Fascia plays a crucial role in our body by supporting movement and protecting muscles and joints. However, when our brain and body don't recognize or utilize certain movement patterns, fascia can build up, leading to a condition called "stuck fat", which hinders blood flow and fat mobilization. This stuck fat isn't simply due to poor diet or lack of exercise; it's a physiological response involving fascia. To address this, we need to create proper movement patterns and teach our nervous system to recognize them, which in turn can help release the stuck fat. With the right techniques, such as fascia blasting and neural warm-ups, we can improve fascia health and enhance our body's movement capabilities, ultimately reducing fat and improving overall well-being.

    • Nutrient FocusFocus on nourishing your body with essential nutrients instead of just counting calories or worrying about weight. Balanced nutrition supports health and optimal body function, enabling effective fat mobilization and muscle building.

Maintaining a healthy body requires more than just focusing on calories or weight loss; it’s essential to nourish it with the right nutrients for overall wellness. When the body feels stable and secure, it can function effectively, mobilize fat, and build muscle. Many diets overlook nutrient needs, leading to deficiencies. Instead of stressing over macros, pay attention to vitamins and minerals that support your body’s health. It’s important to enjoy food without guilt while ensuring you get the nutrients necessary for maintaining good health. Striking a balance between enjoying foods and nourishing your body can help you achieve a happier, healthier life.

    • Nutrient FocusFocusing on rich nutrients instead of just calories is essential for body balance, while stress can lead to storing 'stressed fat'.

Eating well is more than just counting calories; it’s about ensuring your body gets the right nutrients. Many people are overfed but undernourished, which disrupts body balance, or homeostasis. For optimal health and to support activities like fat mobilization, your focus should be on nutrient-rich foods and listening to your body's needs, which includes managing stress levels. Stress can lead to the accumulation of 'stressed fat', emphasizing the importance of a balanced approach to nutrition, mental wellbeing, and a positive relationship with food.

    • Stress and EmotionsManaging stress and emotions is essential for optimal health, as both can hinder body functions and emotional well-being. Processing feelings instead of numbing them leads to better health outcomes.

Stress affects not just your body but also your mind. When you're stressed, your nervous system enters a state that hinders digestion and fat mobilization, which are crucial for good health. Similarly, emotions like sadness and shame also trigger stress responses. If you ignore these feelings, they can lead you to seek comfort through unhealthy habits, affecting your body's state further. The key is to process your emotions and give yourself care and connection, as these help promote better hormonal balance and support your goals for health and well-being. Remember, how you feel about yourself and manage these feelings plays a big role in achieving physical health goals.

    • Numbing CycleNumbing emotions with food and TV can lead to guilt and unhealthy habits. Recognizing this cycle is key to improving mental and physical health.

Numbing emotions with food or TV can trap us in a cycle of temporary comfort followed by guilt and pain. This is closely linked to our brain's response, not just our willpower. Addressing these feelings with the right tools is vital for mental and physical health, preventing what can be termed as 'sad fat'. It's important to recognize these connections to better manage our behaviors and emotions. For those dealing with deep-seated habits like this, finding support from professionals can be a game changer in breaking free from these patterns. Connecting with others who share similar struggles can also provide encouragement and accountability. It's crucial to shift how we respond to our emotions for lasting change, since the battle against self-sabotage involves more than just diet and exercise; it requires understanding the complex interplay of our mental and emotional states.

    • Breath and BalanceCorrect breathing—belly expanding while inhaling and contracting while exhaling—can significantly improve health by helping the nervous system function optimally and addressing stored fat. Visualizing the sensations strengthens this practice, leading to a more balanced body and mind.

Breathing correctly is essential for optimal health, yet many women unconsciously breathe in a way that can negatively affect their body. Instead of sucking in the stomach while inhaling, imagine your belly expanding like a balloon with each breath in and contracting with each breath out. This helps reset the nervous system, promoting balance in physical and mental health. When you breathe deeply and visualize the sensations, it not only supports the respiratory system but also positively impacts digestion, metabolism, hormones, and overall body function. Improving breath can address various forms of stored fat in the body, related to stress and emotional states. By embracing proper breathing techniques, you enable yourself to shift towards better health and wellness, enhancing your body’s capacity to thrive. Remember, your breath is a powerful tool in achieving homeostasis, essential for a healthy relationship with your body and its processes.

    • Body MindsetFocus on transforming your mindset about your body to improve health. Embrace self-acceptance and a positive narrative instead of shame and comparison, allowing your body to work smarter for you.

Our bodies have more layers than we realize. Instead of fixating on food choices and exercise routines, focus on the underlying mental and emotional factors impacting health. The way you think about your body affects how it responds. By changing your mindset and recognizing your inherent worth, you can improve your relationship with food and exercise. The goal is to optimize what you already do, ensuring your body and brain work in harmony. It’s essential to create a positive narrative about yourself, free from shame and comparison, and instead embrace your unique journey. This shift can empower you to feel confident, strong, and beautiful, transforming your health journey into a more fulfilling experience. Moving forward, discover a better story about your body that encourages trust and self-acceptance, allowing you to work smarter rather than harder.

    • Self-Acceptance FirstPrioritize self-care over dieting by embracing and understanding your body. This approach fosters a healthier relationship with food and improves body image.

Taking care of your body starts with self-acceptance. Before embarking on diets or workout plans, focus on understanding and nurturing your body as it is. Stop the negative self-talk and stop treating your body poorly. This journey of self-care can help you develop a healthier relationship with food and body image, moving away from the cycle of judgment and restriction. Embrace your body and be kind to yourself. By doing so, you’ll be better equipped to influence your health and make lasting changes—if you wish to. Check out resources that guide you through a positive transformation without the need for strict diets or harsh exercise regimes. Remember, it's about learning, exploring, and healing your perception of yourself rather than battling against your body.

PART 2: Do You WANT to Stop Dieting, But You Have No Idea What That Even Looks Like (and the alternative terrifies you!)? Let's Talk About It! (Outweigh)

PART 2: Do You WANT to Stop Dieting, But You Have No Idea What That Even Looks Like (and the alternative terrifies you!)? Let's Talk About It! (Outweigh)

OUTWEIGH: Leanne is back for Part 2 of this series to help you understand how to get off the diet roller coaster for good.

So many women WANT to stop dieting, but they don't know how, or they don't know what that even looks like, because it's all they've ever known.

So this idea of "food freedom" or NOT being on some sort of diet is not only foreign to them, but it's actually pretty scary, because all their brain has known is what it's like to count, measure, restrict, and control.

Or their brain knows what it's like to bounce to the opposite end of the spectrum, and end up in an uncontrollable cycle of mindless eating, emotional eating, stress eating, or binging, and they just end up feeling super out-of-control.

This week Leanne is laying out the 5 step crystal-clear path way to finally STOP dieting without feeling like you're going off the deep end if you're NOT on something.

    HOST: @leanneellington

Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone + Why You Should Never Kiss Your Dog + Gratitude + Mantras & Intentions for 2024 (the Year of Empowerment)

FIRST THING: Amy read something special her sister wrote called That Time We Tore Down the Fence. Loving your neighbors well, getting outside of your comfort zone, and answering dreams, but never forgetting what you have experienced and learned and loved on the way.

SECOND THING: Taft Hansen (a medical laboratory scientist/parasitologist) is a guest for this continued conversation about parasites. He sent Amy an email after hearing her episode with Katie Decker and he wanted to contribute. They talk about why you should never kiss your dog, cooking meat properly, parasites in the brain and more.

3RD THING: Taft's wife Morgan joins in for '4 Things Gratitude' and some good movie, tv and book recommendations come up during it!

4TH THING: Amy's cousin, Amanda Rieger Green is on talking about how 2024 is the year of empowerment. She released a Numerology Guide Book that’s special for this year (an 8 year, BTW) and people are loving it, so Amanda gave us the details & also shared with us some mantras and intentions that are good for us to use this year specifically!

PART 1: Do You WANT to Stop Dieting, But You Have No Idea What That Even Looks Like (and the alternative terrifies you!)? Let's Talk About It! (Outweigh)

OUTWEIGH: So many women WANT to stop dieting, but they don't know how, or they don't know what that even looks like, because it's all they've ever known.

But again, NOT being ON something scares them, because when they are not ON, they are totally OFF, and as you can imagine, it's one massive vicious cycle and downward spiral.

And because this topic truly is multi-faceted, Leanne broke it up into 2 parts. Part 1 is about the mindset and heartset and brainset shifts that need to happen to make the strategy-side-of-things Leanne will share in Part 2 even possible.

So enjoy this episode, and make sure to come back next week where Leanne is going to break it down into 5 crystal clear steps of what that actually looks like to heal from the diet mentality for good.

Elevate Your Confidence, Style & Power with This Life-Changing Tip

Elevate Your Confidence, Style & Power with This Life-Changing Tip

Amy just discovered color matching & it's blown her mind. Her guest, Hannah Garber (a color analyst) breaks it all down for us. Amy met Hannah after she booked an appointment to find out her "season" (she learned she's a 'cool summer' palette, btw) and when Hannah told Amy her underlying skin tone was one that radiates in NAVY BLUE & NOT BLACK Amy was fascinated! She knew she wanted Hannah on the podcast ASAP. Why are we just now learning about this? In a nutshell, we all have certain colors that give us the power to show up with more confidence and look our best. Everything from the way we color our hair, to our makeup choices, the clothing we wear, nail color, jewelry etc..

Amy & Hannah talk about the colors/seasons (winter, summer, spring & autumn), confidence, capsule wardrobes (imagine if getting dressed was easy!!), the science behind it all, how Hollywood uses color matching for character building (shout out Anne Hathoway in Devil Wears Prada) & so much more (like memories of our moms with their signature lip colors & how switching your mascara color from black to brown is a game-changer or vice versa...it all depends on the "season" that you are!)

DM Hannah on IG. She'd love to hear from you: @houseofcolournashville_hannah

How Gwyneth Paltrow Releases Anger & Do You Rank Your Friends? (5th Thing)

How Gwyneth Paltrow Releases Anger & Do You Rank Your Friends? (5th Thing)

Today’s quote is from Ally Fallon: “You rarely know the whole story already – when things don’t make sense it’s usually because there’s missing data, untapped information. Maybe someone is keeping something from you, maybe you’re keeping something from yourself. Maybe certain things are none of your business - and maybe you need to wait a little longer to collect more puzzle pieces.”

What are the facts in the story you’ve built in your head? Practice patience – the other pieces of the puzzle are coming.

Amy & Kat “popcorn” through different topics:

    • How Kat’s feeling leading up to her wedding!
    • What’s the right way to order your bridesmaids/groomsmen?
    • Survey: 1/3 of Americans feel lonely at least once per week
    • Filling your cup with connection & community
    • Horrible hygiene habits that are way too common
    • Gwyneth Paltrow uses a baseball bat to release anger
    • Emotional intelligence quiz
    • Gaslighting and the Keanu Reeves mindset (2+2=5)

Will Amy make 2024 the year of no shoes in her house? Only time will tell :)

Wishing Kat a happy wedding week!!! Check out her episode about The Loneliness Epidemic on You Need Therapy.
