    • Investing in a comprehensive research platform like TEGAS can streamline and deepen research processTEGAS offers a vast library of transcripts, financial workflows, and drivable financial models for end-to-end investment research, improving effectiveness and uncovering high-quality alpha

The platform's maniacal focus on quality and depth of content makes it an end-to-end solution for investors looking to build conviction and uncover high-quality alpha. Moreover, Tim Urban's experience of writing a book on a single topic for seven years highlights the challenges of long-term projects for procrastinators. Despite the complexity and breadth of the topic, Urban found that the single-topic focus kept him intellectually engaged. However, the lack of immediate deadlines and the inability of the "dumb part" of the brain to grasp the long-term stakes made procrastination a significant challenge. Overall, the combination of TEGAS' powerful research tools and the importance of tackling long-term projects with focus and determination can lead to more effective and successful investment strategies. • Exploring societal decline amid technological advancementsDespite technological advancements, societal health is declining due to public shaming, truth decay, and political tribalism. Understanding these issues and learning to navigate them is crucial for individuals and society as a whole.

The author's book explores the decline in wisdom and societal health in the modern world, despite the exponential technological advancements that could lead to unprecedented good or bad times. The author, who had initially focused on writing about future tech and paradigm shifts, became concerned about the potential negative consequences of these advancements, particularly the rise of public shaming, truth decay, and political tribalism. The author's own experience of being attacked for expressing independent thoughts and not feeling tribally aligned with either the left or the right further solidified this concern. The author's question became: why is it so hard to talk about these issues and why is society devolving at a time when our power as a species is increasing? The author's goal is to explore these questions and offer insights on how to navigate this complex and polarized landscape.

    • Understanding the 'How' of BeliefsThe 'Ladder of Inference' concept introduces a vertical axis to the political spectrum, allowing us to understand not only where people stand on an issue but also how they arrived at their beliefs. Prioritizing truth and being open to criticism are high rung beliefs.

There are different ways to approach problems, and the concept of the "latter" provides a new perspective by introducing a vertical axis to the traditional horizontal political spectrum. This vertical axis represents the "how you think" axis and allows us to understand not only where people stand on an issue but also how they arrived at their beliefs. When we're in the high rungs of the ladder, we prioritize truth and are open to criticism and changing our minds. In contrast, when we're in the low rungs, our beliefs become a core part of our identity, and we focus on confirming our existing views rather than seeking truth. This discussion highlights the importance of considering both the "what" and "how" of our beliefs to foster more meaningful and productive conversations.

    • The impact of groups on our thinkingHigh rung thinking fosters open-mindedness, collaboration, and intellectual growth in idea labs, while low rung thinking reinforces shared beliefs and closed-mindedness in echo chambers. Awareness of these intellectual environments is crucial as technology intensifies their effects.

The way we think and the groups we surround ourselves with significantly impact how we perceive and process ideas. High rung thinking encourages open-mindedness, collaboration, and intellectual growth, while low rung thinking fosters confirmation bias, closed-mindedness, and group identity based on shared beliefs. The groups that promote these ways of thinking, called idea labs and echo chambers respectively, have distinct emergent properties that influence individuals and the group as a whole. In idea labs, truth is valued, disagreement is encouraged, and changing one's mind is seen as a sign of intelligence. In contrast, echo chambers reinforce shared beliefs, label those who disagree as enemies, and create a sense of group identity based on these beliefs. Technology, acting as a magnifier, can intensify these tendencies, making it essential to be aware of the intellectual environments we inhabit and their impact on our thinking.

    • The power of collective intelligence through genie or golemCollective intelligence thrives when brains connect in open, honest, and critical discourse (genie). Conformity and groupthink lead to less intelligent and potentially harmful collective (golem). Encourage genie culture and strengthen immune system against golems to maximize potential.

The power of collective intelligence surpasses that of individual brains. This concept is illustrated through the idea of a "genie" - a super intelligent being formed when individual brains connect and engage in open, honest, and critical discourse. Conversely, an "echo chamber" or "golem" forms when conformity and groupthink prevail, leading to a less intelligent and potentially harmful collective. The scientific community is an example of a successful genie, where theories are challenged and refined through criticism and debate. However, the immune system against golems seems to be weakened in today's society, leading to their proliferation and causing damage. It's essential to foster genie culture and strengthen the immune system against golems to harness the full potential of collective intelligence.

    • Mongols' strict obedience and conformityThe Mongols' hierarchical structure enforced severe consequences for non-conformity, ensuring unity and commitment to their cause but at the cost of individual freedom

The Mongols, much like a perfectly functioning golem, require strict obedience and conformity from every member to maintain their strength and success. This was achieved through a hierarchical structure that enforced severe consequences for non-conformity, both internally and externally. The Mongols' internal ruthlessness ensured conformity among their own people, while their external ruthlessness was demonstrated through their conquest and subjugation of other civilizations. This "you're with us or against us" mentality created a sense of unity and unwavering commitment to the Mongol cause. However, it's important to note that this level of conformity comes at the cost of individual freedom and autonomy.

    • The survival of 'genies' or ideas despite 'golems'Ideas, like philosophy, art, and knowledge, have survived through history due to institutions and nuanced disagreement, despite external and internal forces trying to suppress them.

Throughout history, the existence of institutions like academia, science, and journalism has allowed for the thriving of "genies" or ideas, despite the presence of "golems" or external and internal forces trying to impose new rules. These genies have accumulated knowledge and led to advancements, such as the Renaissance. However, the power games, or the rule of power and lack of clear rules, can lead to the suppression or destruction of these genies. Ancient Greece is an example of a civilization that allowed for nuanced disagreement and the preservation of knowledge, which led to the flourishing of philosophy, art, and knowledge. The survival and amplification of these ideas over time, despite the power games, demonstrate the importance of protecting and preserving the genies for future generations.

    • Liberal Games: Balancing Rules and Freedoms for Knowledge and InnovationModern liberal democracies foster knowledge and innovation through a balance of rules and freedoms, protecting against harmful 'golems' and ensuring fair game rules and physical force prevention.

Modern liberal democracies have created the best conditions yet for the flourishing of knowledge and innovation, while also allowing for correction when harmful "golems" emerge. This is achieved through a balance of rules and freedoms, known as the "liberal games," which prevent the power games from taking over. These rules include the pursuit of happiness, equality of opportunity, and free speech, all of which are designed to maximize freedom and opportunity while minimizing harm to others. However, this system is vulnerable and requires the ongoing protection of basic laws preventing physical force and the enforcement of fair game rules. Examples of golems, such as McCarthyism, have been corrected over time, demonstrating the resilience of this system.

    • Laws and norms hold liberal democracy togetherA breakdown in norms can make liberal democracy vulnerable, leading to echo chambers and suppression of individual rights and freedoms. It's important to uphold norms and resist pressure to conform to echo chambers.

Liberal democracy relies on both laws and norms to function effectively as an immune system against the takeover of power games. Laws serve as the bricks in the wall, while norms act as the mortar that holds it together. A breakdown in norms can make the system vulnerable, allowing for the formation of echo chambers and the suppression of individual rights and freedoms. This was evident during the McCarthyism era when fear and social pressure led to a breakdown in liberal norms, allowing for the unchecked spread of power games. The media landscape has also played a role in this shift, with the advent of cable television and the rise of biased, one-sided media outlets contributing to the erosion of norms and the proliferation of echo chambers. It's important for individuals and society as a whole to stand up for liberal norms and resist the pressure to conform to echo chambers in order to maintain a healthy democratic system.

    • Media shift towards partisan content and negativityInstitutions, including media and academia, risk failing their intended purposes when they prioritize beliefs over core functions like seeking truth and upholding knowledge.

The media landscape has shifted dramatically over the past few decades, with a move towards low rung, partisan media that caters to specific beliefs rather than staying neutral and seeking the truth. This shift, driven in part by the business model of making money through catering to a particular audience, has led to a proliferation of political reality TV-style content that often prioritizes negativity and conflict over factual reporting. This trend is not limited to media, and other institutions like academia are also facing challenges in upholding their intended roles in society. To assess the health of an institution, it's important to consider its telos, or end goal. For a college, this might be seen as the pursuit of knowledge and the development of critical thinking skills. However, when institutions prioritize conformity to certain beliefs over these core functions, they risk becoming stymied and failing to serve their intended purpose.

    • Colleges and universities' dual role: education and researchSome colleges have shifted towards Social Justice Fundamentalism, a Marxist ideology that silences opposing viewpoints, threatening academic integrity and free speech.

Colleges and universities, as institutions dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and truth, have a dual role: education and research. Their mission is to foster critical thinking, encourage skepticism, and uphold the highest standards of accuracy and honesty. However, in recent decades, some colleges have shifted towards an ideology known as Social Justice Fundamentalism, which is rooted in Marxism and views liberalism as a tool of oppression. This ideology is fundamentally opposed to the liberal values of free speech, free assembly, and open discussion, and seeks to silence opposing viewpoints. This shift towards Social Justice Fundamentalism can be seen as a form of corruption, where the sacred value of truth has been replaced by a new, conflicting value. It's important for institutions to publicly acknowledge and announce any changes in their values and priorities. The ideal college or university remains committed to the pursuit of truth and the development of high-rank thinkers, while maintaining rigorous standards of academic integrity in research.

    • Preventing Social Justice Fundamentalism in UniversitiesUniversities must uphold free speech and open dialogue to prevent social justice fundamentalism, allowing all ideas to be aired and debated, even if unpopular or controversial.

While social justice movements are important for promoting equality and challenging systemic issues, there is a danger of social justice fundamentalism developing in some corners of universities. This ideology, which is a more extreme and radical version of social justice, can lead to intolerance, conformity, and attempts to suppress opposing viewpoints. The immune system of universities needs to prevent this by upholding the principles of free speech and open dialogue. There are different ways to approach speakers or ideas that challenge one's beliefs. One can attend the talk and engage in a respectful dialogue, choose not to attend, or even choose not to be friends with those who do. However, there is a line that should not be crossed, which is attempting to shut down the talk altogether. This is not only a violation of free speech but also goes against the very essence of a truth-seeking institution. The idea supremacist, who seeks to suppress opposing viewpoints, is the antithesis of Veritas. It is important for universities to uphold the principles of free speech and open dialogue, allowing all ideas to be aired and debated, even if they are unpopular or controversial. This is the only way to ensure that truth can prevail and that students can be exposed to a wide range of perspectives.

    • Universities under siege from Social Justice FundamentalismUniversities are being transformed from bastions of free thought into conformist institutions, suppressing dissenting views and research, and undermining academic freedom

Universities, which are supposed to be bastions of free thought and intellectual diversity, are increasingly being corrupted by social justice fundamentalism (SJF). This ideology is changing the rules from an open marketplace of ideas to a system where only certain ideas are accepted, and those who express dissenting views face consequences such as investigation, firing, or even expulsion. This culture of conformity is not only stifling education but also research, as papers that challenge SJF tenets are either suppressed or given preferential treatment. The failure of university leadership to uphold their values and resist the pressure from SJF is allowing this ideology to hijack the institutions, transforming them from instruments of truth to tools of the movement. This trend is a cause for concern in any liberal democracy, as it undermines the very essence of liberalism and academic freedom.

    • The tip of cancel culture is visible, but self-censorship is a larger issue beneath the surfaceSelf-censorship due to fear of backlash stifles free speech and suppresses valuable perspectives, leading to a chilling effect on society as a whole.

There's a growing issue of self-censorship and unsaid ideas in society due to a fear of backlash and social consequences. This problem is often compared to an iceberg, where the visible tip represents the public cases of cancel culture, while the vast majority of self-censorship happens beneath the surface. The fear of being publicly shamed or having one's reputation ruined can lead to a chilling effect on free speech, particularly in liberal democracies. This atmosphere of fear can have far-reaching consequences, as the smear on one individual can quickly spread to others. The result is a loss for society as a whole, as valuable perspectives and ideas are suppressed. It's important to recognize that the number of people who would actually be offended by a particular viewpoint is often much smaller than the number of people who might be influenced by the fear of backlash. It's crucial to strive for a balance where individuals feel safe to express their ideas, even if they may be unpopular or offensive to some, while also acknowledging the importance of social consequences for harmful speech.

    • The Fear of Cancel Culture and Its Impact on Free ThoughtThe fear of cancel culture stifles free thought and open dialogue, leading to self-censorship and the suppression of new ideas. It's important to recognize the difference between criticism and cancel culture and to foster a culture of openness and respect.

Our current cultural climate is stifling free thought and open dialogue due to the power of social media mobs and the fear of being canceled. This fear and confusion can lead to a spiral of self-censorship and the suppression of new ideas. It's important to recognize the difference between criticism and cancel culture, and to strive for more courage and awareness in our discussions. An example of this is seen in individuals like Toby Lutka, who have stood up to mobs and shown strength in the face of criticism. By fostering a culture of openness and respect, we can encourage the free exchange of ideas and the development of mass intelligence. The key is to challenge the confusion and fear that fuel cancel culture and instead embrace courage and awareness.

    • Fear of speaking up and authenticityEmbrace authenticity and find courage to speak up, even if intimidated by mob mentality or fear of backlash. Question limiting rules and norms, and encourage open discussions for greater awareness and understanding.

Authenticity and courage go hand in hand, and the fear of speaking up can be a major barrier. The speaker emphasizes that most people are not in real danger when they express their true thoughts, but the fear of backlash can be strong. The mob mentality can make it seem intimidating to stand up for oneself, but if more people speak out, the fear can dissipate, and discussions can lead to greater awareness and understanding. It's important for individuals to represent themselves honestly, even if it's not always easy, as the vast majority of people will not face serious consequences. The speaker also acknowledges that there are some individuals who may face significant repercussions for their words, but encourages everyone else to find their courage and speak up, even if it's not in a public setting. The speaker suggests that the fear of speaking up often comes from being bullied into silence, and that individuals should question the rules and norms that limit what can be said. Ultimately, the speaker believes that authenticity and courage are essential for personal growth and societal progress.

    • Stifling open discussion on complex issues harms liberal democraciesEncouraging open dialogue and understanding various perspectives is crucial for a liberal democracy, even if topics are taboo or controversial.

Stifling open discussion on important and complex issues, such as affirmative action policies, is detrimental to a liberal democracy. It's crucial to have nuanced conversations, even if the topic is considered taboo or controversial by some. Bullying and enforcing echo chambers on others is a violation of live and let live, and everyone, regardless of their beliefs, should be offended by such behavior. The ideas of courage and awareness are essential in encouraging open dialogue and understanding various perspectives. The recent explosion of AI technology is a new source of godlike power for humanity, and it's important for society to approach it with wisdom and open discussion to ensure it evolves in a beneficial way. The unintended consequences of new technology are often unforeseen, and it's essential to be aware and have open discussions to navigate these complex issues.

    • Encouraging thoughtful leadership in the era of advanced AIStay open-minded towards advanced AI, avoid extreme positions, and encourage true leadership that can navigate the complexities of this technology.

As the discussion around advanced AI like GPT 3 and GPT 4 gains prominence, it's crucial to avoid being swayed by extreme, unnuanced positions. The fear or excitement surrounding AI should not lead us to shut down new ideas or punish certain viewpoints. Instead, we must keep an open mind and encourage thoughtful leadership that can navigate the complexities of this technology. The role of leaders, whether in companies, public platforms, or even in everyday life, becomes increasingly important during times of change, especially when the "immune system" of society seems to be breaking down. It's essential to recognize that most individuals involved in contentious debates are not inherently evil but are often driven by empathy and a desire to make things better. Therefore, we should encourage and demand true leadership that can guide us through these challenging times.

    • Protecting our democratic immune systemWe must remain vigilant and active in defending our democratic values to prevent demagogues from exploiting challenging times

While there may be individuals who take advantage of challenging times and behave as demagogues, it's up to all of us to stand up for what's right and protect our liberal democracy. The tools to restore and maintain our democratic immune system exist, but complacency and apathy can be detrimental. History serves as a reminder of the potential fragility of civilizations. The speaker expressed gratitude for the conversation and the opportunity to discuss their work, which spans over six years and covers dense and rich ideas. They encouraged listeners to continue learning and engaging with the topics presented on the podcast, and to sign up for the newsletter, Colossus Weekly, for condensed episodes and recommended content.

Episode 9: Manga Is Not a Crime
This very special and important podcast was recorded live, October 14,2012 at the NY Comic Con. Brownstein is the Director of the CBLDF an organization dedicated to keeping Comic Books legal. Founded in 1986, the CBLDF has defended the 1st Amendment Right of Comic book retailers, artists, and now, readers: "Legal Defense: Since 1986, the CBLDF has managed and paid for the legal defense of individuals whose First Amendment rights are threatened for making, selling, or even reading comic books. We also provide free referrals for cases before they rise to the level of a court challenge. Most recently, the CBLDF successfully defended Ryan Matheson, an American citizen who was unlawfully arrested at Canada Customs and wrongly charged with importing child pornography for having innocuous manga images on his laptop computer. Ryan’s case cost $75,000, of which the Fund has raised $30,000. We are currently raising money to pay off the remaining $40,000 of that legal debt. Legal Advocacy: The CBLDF works independently and with coalitions to fight unconstitutional legislation that would affect how comics are made and distributed. We were active plaintiffs in the fight against compulsory internet filters in libraries. Most recently, we helped knock out an unconstitutional Utah bill to censor Internet speech, and were cited by the United States Supreme Court in a case against a California law that sought to broaden the definition of speech not protected by the First Amendment to include violent images." CBLDF is also an active participant in BANNED BOOKS WEEK, and other educational outreach programs.

ASK174: Why are these Liverpool flats so cheap? PLUS: How do I avoid becoming a mortgage prisoner?

ASK174: Why are these Liverpool flats so cheap? PLUS: How do I avoid becoming a mortgage prisoner?

This week on Ask Rob & Rob, you’re in for a whole load of cracking advice off the back of two great questions from avid Property Podcast listeners, Wilson and Val.

First up we have Wilson who’s keen to ask Rob B a question about a location that’s very close to his heart - Liverpool! Wilson has noticed that certain property prices in Liverpool have dropped in value since they sold back in 2007.

Naturally, Wilson wants to know if the next phase of the property cycle is likely to improve these prices.

Without being too biased, Rob B admits that Liverpool is massively underpriced at the minute, one of the main reasons The Robs pegged it as one of their 2019 property investment hotspots. But he offers some sound advice on thorough due diligence when looking at less popular areas and what to expect. If you’re looking for a great location to invest in this year, this is a great podcast listen for you!

The second question this week comes from Val who is concerned about falling into the trap of becoming a mortgage prisoner.

Listen as Rob D takes charge, reiterating some basic points that were covered in episode 308 of the Property Podcaston getting a mortgage.

Why should Val stick to a 75% loan to value mortgage? What other actions would The Robs recommend Val take to avoid being a mortgage prisoner? Hit play to find out.
