Top 10 holiday tips & energy switches are back

    enJuly 13, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Preparation is key to saving money and reducing stress during holidaysCheck passport validity, plan ahead for currency exchange, and utilize travel cards to save money and reduce stress during holidays

Effective preparation is key to saving money and ensuring a smooth holiday experience. Whether it's checking your passport well in advance, securing the best currency exchange rates, or utilizing personalized weight loss plans, taking care of these details beforehand can help reduce costs and minimize stress. Additionally, volunteering unexpected roles, like Niall's at Wimbledon, can lead to unique experiences. So, always be open to new opportunities and remember, a little preparation goes a long way! Blue Nile offers lab-grown diamonds that are identical to natural diamonds and come with independent grading. Noom provides personalized weight loss plans that cater to individual preferences, helping people like Evan achieve their goals. When traveling, checking your passport's validity and ensuring it has enough remaining validity for your destination is crucial. Preparation also includes researching the cheapest currency exchange rates and obtaining overseas travel cards. And don't forget about sunscreen! The summer holidays are approaching, and around 50% of people plan to travel despite the cost of living crisis. By following simple tips like checking passport validity, planning ahead for currency exchange, and utilizing travel cards, you can significantly reduce holiday expenses. Remember, a little preparation can save you a lot of money and stress in the long run.

    • Ensure passport validity for international travelCheck passport validity with six months left and under ten years old for international travel to avoid entry issues. Save money by checking for price drops and using the right credit or debit card without foreign transaction fees.

When planning international travel, it's crucial to ensure your passport is valid with at least six months validity from the entry date and under ten years old. Passport validity is a strict requirement for entry into many countries, and failing to meet these conditions can lead to denied boarding or entry. Additionally, checking for price drops and rebooking travel accommodations and car rentals can result in significant savings. Another important tip is using the right credit or debit card when traveling abroad to avoid unnecessary fees. Traditional debit and credit cards often add a 3% non-sterling exchange rate fee, but there are specialist cards that don't charge this fee, allowing travelers to enjoy the same near-perfect exchange rates as banks and credit card companies. Two such cards are the Chase Mastercard debit card and the Barclaycard rewards Visa credit card. Both cards offer the same near-perfect exchange rates, so their additional features will determine which one is the better choice for individual travelers.

    • Chase vs Barclaycard: Which is Better for Cashback on Everyday Spending?Chase cashback debit card offers higher cashback percentage with no cap for everyday spending in the UK and overseas, making it a better choice for most people. However, Barclaycard's higher daily cash machine withdrawal limit might be more suitable for those frequently withdrawing large amounts of cash abroad.

For most people, the Chase cashback debit card is a better choice than the Barclaycard reward credit card for cashback on everyday spending in the UK and overseas due to its higher cashback percentage with no cap. However, if you frequently withdraw large amounts of cash abroad, the Barclaycard may be more suitable due to its higher daily cash machine withdrawal limit. Both cards are interest-free on spending and cash withdrawals as long as certain conditions are met. If you already have a specialist overseas card from another bank, it might not be worth switching to Chase or Barclaycard solely for the cashback. A bank account, First Direct, is currently offering a £175 cash incentive for new customers and has recently turned its debit card into a specialist overseas card, which could be an alternative option for those not already using the bank.

    • Mitigate currency exchange risks with prepaid cards like RevolutUse prepaid cards with locked-in exchange rates and pay in local currency for best deals. Compare exchange rates for cash transactions.

When spending abroad, using a debit or credit card comes with the risk of unfavorable exchange rates. To mitigate this risk, consider using a top prepaid card like Revolut to lock in a cheaper rate, especially mid-week to avoid additional fees. Always opt to pay in the local currency when using your card to ensure the best exchange rates. When it comes to cash transactions, it's essential to compare the exchange rates offered by various bureaus de change or use online comparison sites to get the best deals. Remember, the grass may seem greener when living abroad, but the UK offers unique advantages like temperate weather, changing seasons, and low violent crime.

    • Traveling in the EU: Essential Health Insurance CoverageRenew your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or apply for the new Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) before traveling in the EU to access state-run healthcare at local prices. Don't forget to get travel insurance as soon as you book your trip for comprehensive protection.

Having the right health insurance coverage is crucial when traveling in the European Union. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or the new Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) provides access to state-run hospitals or GPs at the same price as locals. Over 5.4 million EHIC cards expire this year, and it's essential to check and renew them before traveling. Be cautious of websites that try to charge for these cards, and always apply through the NHS or gov.uk websites. If you're traveling without an EHIC or GHIC, there is still a way to get the same treatment, but it's more complicated. Another important tip is to get travel insurance as soon as you book your trip. Half of its value comes from the protection it offers before you travel, so don't delay. These are just a couple of the essential tips for living and traveling in the European Union.

    • The Importance of Travel Insurance and Living AbroadTravel insurance protects against unexpected costs before and during travel. Purchase it early. Living abroad offers various benefits, such as lower cost of living, higher standard of living, and strong community. Be aware of EU roaming charges when using mobile networks.

Travel insurance is an essential investment before going on holiday. The stories shared illustrate the importance of having travel insurance to protect against unexpected events, even those that occur before the trip. These events can result in significant financial losses if not covered by insurance. For instance, Jonathan's wife fractured her pelvis two weeks before their Kenya holiday, and they were able to claim over £2,000 for their cancelled flights and hotel costs. It's important to purchase travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday to ensure coverage. Another key takeaway is the contrasting experiences of living abroad, as shared by expats in Portugal, Germany, and Sweden. While some focus on the lower cost of living, others prioritize the higher standard of living, including access to quality healthcare, affordable childcare, and a strong sense of community. Lastly, be aware of EU roaming charges, which have returned for most major networks, including EE, Vodafone, and 3. These charges can range from £1.20 to £2.50 per day, and it's important to understand the definition of a "day" to avoid unexpected charges. Virgin Media 2 is currently the only network that does not charge EU roaming fees.

    • Unfair mobile charges and savings optionsSwitch to piggybacking networks or use eSIMs for cheaper roaming, save on EU roaming fees with certain networks, and book airport parking in advance to save money.

Consumers are being charged unfairly for mobile usage, particularly when roaming outside the EU, and there are alternatives to save money. The speaker expressed frustration with mobile networks not defining what constitutes a day for billing, which can lead to unexpected high charges. However, the main point of the discussion was the significant cost savings that can be achieved by switching to piggybacking networks or using eSIMs for international travel. These options can provide cheaper data and call rates, especially outside the EU. For instance, networks like Asda, Gifgas, Leica, and Smarty do not charge roaming fees within the EU. Additionally, eSIMs, which are digital alternatives to physical SIM cards, can offer cost-effective data packages when traveling abroad. Providers like Airlo, Holofly, and Nomad offer competitive prices for data plans, which can last for an extended period. The speaker also suggested booking airport parking in advance to save money. For example, parking at Manchester Airport for a week cost £350 without pre-booking, but only £64 when booked on the same day using a comparison site. Overall, the discussion emphasized the importance of being informed and proactive to avoid overpaying for mobile usage and parking.

    • Prepare Ahead to Save MoneyBook airport parking ahead, check sunscreen expiration dates, compare living costs abroad, and consider energy switching deals to save money

Preparing ahead can save you money, even when you're in a rush. For instance, if you're at the airport, have someone else book your parking spot through comparison sites like bookfhr.com, holiday extras.com, and airparks.co.uk. Another essential tip is to check the PAO symbol on your sunscreen bottles to determine their expiration dates and avoid unnecessary purchases. Moreover, the standard and quality of living abroad can vary significantly. Some people, like Craig in Germany and Karen Johnson in Southern Spain, have reported better living standards and lower costs. Others, such as Helen Hall, have returned to the UK after traveling due to appreciating what they have here. An exciting development for UK residents is the return of energy switching deals for both new and existing customers, with British Gas and So Energy offering fixes. If you're not already locked into a deal, it might be worth considering this opportunity to secure lower energy prices, especially since the price cap has recently dropped by 17%.

    • Energy price cap drops by 17% on average, with further drops predictedConsumers can expect to pay 3% less than the current price cap on average over the next year. Consider fixing energy prices for greater certainty, but assess individual circumstances and provider offerings before deciding.

The energy price cap has dropped by an average of 17%, and it's predicted to drop further by 5% on October 1st. On average, consumers can expect to pay 3% less than the current price cap over the next 12 months. However, there are energy fixes available that offer even greater price certainty. For instance, EON Next offers a fix that is 3% less than the current price cap, but it's only available to existing customers with fixes ending between December 2022 and September 2023. So Energy offers a fix that is 1% less than the current price cap and is available to all customers. If consumers value price certainty and can get a fix below the current price cap, it's a good idea to consider fixing. However, if the difference between the fix and the current price cap is small, it might be worth waiting and seeing how prices develop. Consumers may also be wondering about energy providers that have gone bust recently, such as British Gas, which is available for switching, and So Energy, a new provider offering a fix that is 1% less than the current price cap. Ultimately, the decision to fix or not depends on individual circumstances and preferences.

    • Consider specific energy usage circumstances before choosing a supplierAssess energy usage patterns and budget to make informed decisions on energy suppliers and plans, considering variable and fixed tariffs, and staying updated on price changes.

While there are several energy suppliers in the market, each with their unique offerings, it's essential to consider the specific circumstances of your energy usage before making a decision. For instance, So Energy, a mid-sized supplier with around 300,000 customers, was recently bought by a major energy firm in the Republic of Ireland. Octopus Energy, on the other hand, offers variable tariffs that can be cheaper than the price cap but come with the risk of higher prices. Lastly, Utility Warehouse offers the cheapest fix but requires customers to take other products to qualify. It's also important to remember that energy prices change frequently, and it's crucial to keep up-to-date with the latest offers and rates. For those who can control their energy usage peaks, tariffs like Octopus Energy's Agile tariff could be beneficial. However, for those with more consistent energy usage, a fixed tariff might be a better option. Ultimately, it's essential to assess your energy usage patterns and budget before choosing a supplier and plan. While there are no hard and fast guarantees, being informed and prepared can help you make the best decision for your energy needs.
