    • Minnesota weather and health concernsMinnesota faced tornadoes and wind damage, while the risk for mosquito-borne diseases like West Nile virus is high during summer. Three cases and one death due to West Nile occurred, and the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District advises preventative measures.

Minnesota experienced tornadoes and extensive wind damage in several counties over the past few days. The National Weather Service is assessing the damage and has reported at least one tornado touchdown in Anoka County. Additionally, the risk for mosquito-borne diseases like West Nile virus is highest during July through September in Minnesota. Three cases and one death due to West Nile virus have been reported this year. The Metropolitan Mosquito Control District advises using bug spray and removing standing water to prevent infection. Minneapolis is expected to end the year with a larger police force than last year, marking the first increase since 2020 due to recruitment efforts and a new police union contract. A government watchdog group has filed a lawsuit for more information on the state's response to the 2020 riot.

    • Public Records DelayThe Wilder Foundation is still waiting for public records related to how Minnesota leaders responded to the 2020 civil unrest despite filing a request under the Data Practices Act two years ago.

The Wilder Foundation is facing delays in obtaining public records related to how Minnesota leaders responded to the 2020 civil unrest. The group, which includes interviews with Governor Tim Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and others, filed a request under the Data Practices Act two years ago but has yet to receive the documents. With Walz currently running for Vice President, the group argues that time is of the essence. They are also seeking a list of interviewees and correspondence about the city's request for the National Guard. The Department of Public Safety has reportedly told the group that it does not have some of the data they are requesting. Meanwhile, a unique event taking place in Minnesota is the showing of the Ojibwe language version of Star Wars: A New Hope in theaters around the state. The collaboration between the Dakota Ojibwe Tribal Council, the University of Manitoba, Lucasfilm, and the Winnipeg-based indigenous broadcaster APTN marks a significant cultural moment. In sports, several teams in Minnesota experienced losses in their recent games, including the Minnesota Gophers, University of St. Thomas, and Minnesota Links. The Minnesota Twins and Minnesota United also have upcoming games. The Vikings are set to start their regular season soon.

    • Minnesota WeatherMinnesotans can expect pleasant conditions with clear skies and cooler temperatures for most areas, while northern regions may experience rain.

Minnesota is expected to have clear skies with low temperatures in the fifties on tomorrow, while the northern parts of the state may experience rain. High temperatures will range from the upper seventies to mid eighties. This weather forecast indicates that Minnesotans can anticipate pleasant, albeit variable, conditions throughout the state this weekend. Clear skies and cooler temperatures are in store for most areas, while the northern regions may encounter rain. Overall, it's a good time to plan for a mix of outdoor activities and indoor relaxation, depending on the specific weather conditions in different parts of the state. Make sure to stay tuned for an update on Tuesday morning for any changes in the forecast. Have a wonderful and versatile weekend in Minnesota!

Senate confirms Minnesota’s newest federal judge. Minneapolis residents voice thoughts on Blue Line extension plan

Senate confirms Minnesota’s newest federal judge. Minneapolis residents voice thoughts on Blue Line extension plan

The U.S. Senate has confirmed a veteran prosecutor as Minnesota’s newest federal judge.  President Joe Biden in June nominated Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Provinzino to replace retiring Judge Wilhelmina Wright. The Senate approved the president’s choice in a bipartisan vote. Provinzino, from St. Cloud, has served as an assistant U.S. Attorney since 2010 focusing on human trafficking cases.

And dozens of Minneapolis residents Thursday voiced their opinions at a city council committee hearing about the proposed Blue Line extension plan. Kristel Porter, executive director of the West Broadway Business and Area Coalition, says the route — which goes down West Broadway — needs a safety plan before it can go forward. Municipalities where the route will be located are holding public hearings on the preliminary design plans before they vote on it. The vote must take place before Oct. 10.

Twin Cities business owner addresses U.S. House panel on crime. Minneapolis considers new encampment data policy

Twin Cities business owner addresses U.S. House panel on crime. Minneapolis considers new encampment data policy

A Twin Cities business owner Wednesday urged U.S. House members to focus on tougher penalties as they weigh public safety policy. Brian Ingram runs Purpose Driven Restaurants. He told a Republican-led panel he has had several burglaries in recent years and he pushed for tougher sentences to deter people from reoffending. Democrats on the committee said the hearing was a political stunt and should have also included a discussion about gun violence.

And the Minneapolis City Council is considering an ordinance amendment requiring the city to consistently report what happens when homeless encampments are cleared. That includes information on how often clearings happen, the number of people who may have been impacted and if those people were immediately connected to a shelter. It would also include reporting on how much clearings cost taxpayers.
