    enOctober 31, 2018

    Podcast Summary

    • Emphasizing community building and connectionDuring uncertain times, relying on neighbors and creating meaningful social bonds is essential. Neighbor to Neighbor in California emphasizes this importance, while Miami's unique culture showcases the power of community.

Community building and connection are essential in uncertain times. Neighbor to Neighbor, a California volunteer network, emphasizes the importance of relying on neighbors and creating meaningful social bonds, especially during natural disasters or times of need. Meanwhile, on a lighter note, Miami, Florida, is known for its lively atmosphere and excitement, as evidenced by its unique church services and everyday parties. However, political tensions are also present, with President Trump using fear tactics, specifically targeting brown people, to motivate his voters in the lead-up to the midterms. Despite these tensions, the energy and excitement surrounding the elections are palpable. Overall, it's important to focus on building and strengthening our communities while staying informed and engaged in current events.

    • President Trump Sends Over 5,000 Troops to US-Mexico Border for CaravanResources could be better allocated by sending judges and lawyers instead of troops to help with asylum process

The current situation at the US-Mexico border involves a large group of people, known as the caravan, traveling from impoverished countries to apply for asylum in the United States. Despite the number of migrants being smaller than the number of troops being sent, President Trump has ordered over 5,000 active duty troops to the border. This decision has been criticized, with some suggesting that resources could be better allocated by sending judges and lawyers to help with the asylum process instead. The underlying issue is the perception of this group of people seeking asylum as an invasion, leading to the deployment of military forces rather than humanitarian assistance.

    • Debate over migrant caravan: Fearmongering and misunderstandingDespite fearmongering, the migrant caravan is still far from the US border and most members are healthy, debunking common misconceptions.

The debate surrounding the migrant caravan approaching the US southern border has been characterized by fearmongering and misunderstanding. Some, like those on Fox News, have labeled it an "invasion," but the reality is that the caravan is still over two months away, and the majority of its members are young, able-bodied men. Fear of diseases being brought across the border has also been raised, but the evidence suggests that the overwhelming majority of migrants are not sick. Instead, some Americans may be more at risk of contracting diseases unique to the US. It's important to remember that there are likely good intentions among those spreading fear, but it's crucial to separate fact from fiction and avoid panic. The midterm elections are fast approaching, and it's essential to focus on accurate information rather than fear-based rhetoric.

    • Building Strong Community ConnectionsIn uncertain times, fostering relationships and growing community is vital. Whether through volunteering or leading, the power of connection can lead to personal growth and success.

Community and connection are essential in uncertain times. Neighbor to Neighbor, a California volunteers network, emphasizes the importance of building strong relationships with those around us. Whether it's lending a helping hand or standing together during natural disasters, this organization empowers individuals to grow their community. Meanwhile, in the world of sports, former New York Yankees captain and Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter continues to inspire, demonstrating that success can come in various forms, whether it's on the baseball field or in a leadership role. Both Neighbor to Neighbor and Jeter's journey remind us of the power of connection and the importance of embracing new opportunities, even when they may be different from what we're used to. • Dealing with criticism and rebuilding a sports teamProvide support for new players, bring in new talent, and view challenges as opportunities to build a successful sports team and organization.

Building a successful sports team and organization takes time and patience, despite the pressures and criticism from the media and fans. Derek Jeter, now in a leadership role with the Miami Marlins, shares his experience of dealing with criticism and the importance of understanding the challenges of a struggling team. He emphasizes the need to provide support for players adjusting to a new culture and language, as well as bringing in new talent to reshape the team. Jeter views these challenges as opportunities rather than setbacks, and is committed to building a first-class organization. Despite the difficulties, he remains motivated and focused on the ultimate goal of winning championships.

    • Humanizing athletes through their storiesThe Players' Tribune allows athletes to share their stories directly with fans, fostering a deeper connection and understanding, and giving them a platform to use their voices for positive change.

The Players' Tribune, founded by McCourty in 2014 after his retirement, aims to humanize athletes by allowing them to share their stories directly with fans, fostering a deeper connection and understanding. McCourty believes the trust between athletes and media is broken and that this platform allows athletes to speak freely about their interests and experiences, creating a more authentic relationship with fans. In today's sports landscape, where political beliefs and affiliations are increasingly discussed, McCourty believes athletes have a platform and a responsibility to use their voices. Balancing the desire for sports to be a political-free zone and giving athletes a voice can be challenging, but McCourty believes athletes should use their platforms for positive change and engagement with their fans.

    • Athlete Role Models: Derek Jeter's Turn 2 FoundationAthlete Derek Jeter's Turn 2 Foundation promotes leadership, academics, health, and social change, raising over $20M with a 100% graduation rate, emphasizing the importance of using one's voice and giving back.

Athletes, through their platforms, have the power to serve as role models for young people and make a positive impact on their lives. Derek Jeter, a former professional baseball player, is an exemplary figure in this regard. He started the Turn 2 Foundation 22 years ago, which focuses on promoting leadership development, academic excellence, healthy lifestyles, and social change. The foundation has raised over $20 million and boasts a 100% graduation rate among the kids it has mentored. Jeter emphasizes the importance of using one's voice and being comfortable speaking out, instilling these values in young people to help them reach their full potential. Philanthropy and giving back to the community have always been important to Jeter and his family, and the Miami Marlins organization shares this value. By focusing on these key areas, athletes like Jeter can make a significant difference in the lives of many young people.

Dr. William J. Barber II discusses his latest book, “White Poverty: How Exposing Myths About Race and Class Can Reconstruct American Democracy.” Barber talks about the staggering statistics of poverty in America which have long been misrepresented, the need for politicians to pay attention to this huge portion of the population and mobilizing poor and low wage people of every race to vote, and leading the June 29th Mass Poor People’s & Low-Wage Workers’ Assembly and Moral March on Washington D.C.

    Episode 34: Are You Syrious?

    Episode 34: Are You Syrious?

Have you ever watched a humanitarian crisis unfolding on the news and witnessed the subsequent failure of leaders to lead, and thought to yourself, "I wish I could get some friends together and just do something to make this better?"

That's what Milena Zajović and a few of her friends in Croatia did when the largest refugee crisis to hit Europe since World War 2 came to their borders in the Summer of 2015. That initial impulse lead to the creation of Are You Syrious?, a nonprofit that focuses on field work, integration, and advocacy for refugees in the Balkans and Southern Europe. Lately a lot of their work has focussed on reporting on the so-called "push backs" that have seen Croatian authorities playing the role of border enforcers for the European Union. These measures have been accompanied by widespread reports of violence and other human rights abuses and campaigns by various governments to criminalize the work of human rights defenders, a worrying trend that Latitude Adjustment covered in our previous episode about Malta as well.

Be sure to subscribe to the Are you Syrious Daily Digest, a resource that's become reference material for foreign embassies, aid workers, and journalists, and which provides up to the minute reporting for and about refugees in Europe and across the Middle East.
