    enJuly 27, 2018

    Podcast Summary

    • Facebook's Financial Setback and Mars' Liquid Water DiscoveryFacebook faced a major financial loss, while Mars discovery and advancements in self-driving technology highlight consumer demand for convenience and efficiency

Facebook experienced a significant financial setback with a $100 billion dollar loss in market value and Mark Zuckerberg personally losing $17 billion, following missed earnings expectations. Meanwhile, advancements in technology continue to progress with the discovery of liquid water on Mars and Walmart's introduction of self-driving cars for grocery pick-ups. Despite these advancements, consumer preferences for convenience and efficiency persist, with services like Uber offering self-driving options and the growing trend towards online shopping.

    • Trump's unexpected accomplishmentsThe Daily Show acknowledges Trump's recent successes in addressing trade disputes and reuniting families, showcasing his ability to mend broken situations.

Despite The Daily Show's past criticisms of President Trump, they acknowledge his recent accomplishments in addressing various issues. Trump's administration announced a $12 billion aid package to help farmers affected by tariffs and reached an agreement with Europe to prevent further trade hostilities. Additionally, the government met the deadline to reunite families separated at the border. These actions, according to the show, demonstrate Trump's ability to mend broken situations. While some may argue these are just expected actions from a president, the show expresses their surprise and admiration for these achievements.

    • Ongoing challenges domestically and globallyWhile some children will not be reunited with their families and global temperatures reach record highs, progress is being made in various areas, and it's crucial to focus on finding solutions rather than dwelling on past issues.

While some progress has been made in reuniting migrant children with their families, not all will be reunited. Meanwhile, global temperatures continue to reach record highs, posing a significant threat to both the environment and human populations. Despite this, some political figures are still focusing on past actions rather than present solutions. Elsewhere, the competition on MTV's Challenge podcast reaches new heights, and California avocados continue to thrive under responsible farming practices. In summary, while there are ongoing challenges both domestically and globally, progress is being made in various areas, and it's important to focus on finding solutions rather than dwelling on past issues.

    • Climate change as a security threat and innovative solutionsThe Pentagon identifies climate change as a threat multiplier and innovative solutions like painting streets white to reflect sunlight are being implemented, but a more serious approach like regulating global carbon emissions is necessary for long-term planetary benefits.

Climate change poses significant challenges to our security and well-being, and addressing it requires innovative solutions. The Pentagon identifies climate change as a threat multiplier due to its potential to exacerbate various issues, including terrorism. Japan, for instance, is grappling with the heatwave ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, and is taking measures such as painting streets white to reflect sunlight. However, these solutions may come with unintended consequences. A more serious approach to mitigate climate change includes regulating global carbon emissions and accepting short-term economic pain for long-term planetary benefits. While some may find this approach daunting, it's crucial to remember that inaction could lead to even more severe consequences.

    • Young Democratic Socialist Ocasio-Cortez Pushes for Moral Economy28-year-old Ocasio-Cortez advocates for a moral economy with social programs, recognizing the need for economic stability and equity, despite criticisms from some parties.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the 28-year-old democratic socialist who defeated a 10-term congressman in New York's 14th congressional district, advocates for a moral and ethical economy where basic economic needs are met through social programs. She believes that this is not only logical but morally obligated. However, she recognizes a branding disconnect between generations, especially millennials, who have grown up in a time of economic instability and have seen peers in other countries with better social services. Ocasio-Cortez plans to work pragmatically towards her goals in Congress, despite criticisms from some Democrats and Republicans, who portray her as an unrealistic idealist. She aims to bridge the gap and move the country towards a more equitable economy.

    • Raising Minimum Wage to Living Wage: Essential for Economic GrowthStudies show $15 minimum wage does not harm economy, essential for economic growth and expanding wealth, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's commitment to independence from corporate PAC money crucial for effective representation and economic policies that benefit the majority

Raising the minimum wage to a living wage is essential for economic growth and expanding wealth in the US. Despite concerns about economic feasibility and potential stifling of growth, studies show that implementing a $15 minimum wage does not harm the economy. However, the issue is complicated by the influence of money in politics. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has taken a public pledge not to accept corporate PAC money, believes that maintaining this independence is crucial for effectively representing the people and enacting policies that benefit the majority. Despite opposition, she remains committed to her principles and aims to navigate the political landscape while staying true to her values.

    • Focusing on authenticity and addressing people's needsAuthenticity and addressing people's needs are crucial for winning over voters, even in conservative districts. Ocasio-Cortez's success in turning a deep red district into a closer race highlights this.

Authenticity and addressing people's needs are key to winning over voters, even in deeply red districts. Ocasio-Cortez emphasized this during her campaign in a Kansas district, where she turned it from a Republican plus 20 district to a Republican plus 6 district, by focusing on her platform ideas rather than labels. She believes her honesty and authenticity resonate with people, including Republicans, and that issues like getting money out of politics are bipartisan. The media's focus on labels, such as socialism, may not be as important to voters as the candidate's ability to connect with their needs. Ocasio-Cortez also noted that the Midwest has a rich history of progressive movements and believes it will be a source of progressive change once again.

    • Finding the Funding for Progressive InitiativesEconomist estimates suggest trillions could be raised in a decade through fair taxes and closing loopholes, while a carbon tax and transitioning to renewable energy could require additional $3-4 trillion. Political and moral courage is needed to reprioritize spending.

While there is widespread agreement on issues like wages, education, saving the planet, and fair taxation, the challenge lies in finding the funding for these initiatives. Economist estimates suggest that if corporations and the wealthy paid their fair share in taxes, and loopholes were closed, trillions of dollars could be raised in a decade. Another source of revenue could come from implementing a carbon tax. However, a significant amount of money, estimated to be around $3-4 trillion, would be needed to transition to a 100% renewable energy economy. The military's budget increase last year, which was not even requested by them, highlights the need for reprioritization of national spending. Ultimately, achieving these goals requires political and moral courage from both sides of the aisle.

Climate Change Is Threatening The U.S. West's Water Supply

Climate Change Is Threatening The U.S. West's Water Supply
The past year has been the driest or second driest in most Southwestern U.S. states since record-keeping began in 1895. Climate Correspondent Lauren Sommer reports that farms and cities have begun imposing water restrictions, but the water supply will shrink no matter what the weather brings. The supply spans tens of millions of people and the farmland that produces most of the country's fruits and vegetables. As a result, the people who manage the West's complex water systems are realizing that with climate change, they can no longer rely on the past to predict the future.

    439. Microplastics, Global Greening, & the Dangers of Radical Alarmism | Dr. Patrick Moore

    439. Microplastics, Global Greening, & the Dangers of Radical Alarmism | Dr. Patrick Moore

Dr. Jordan B. Peterson sits down with industry consultant, science activist, and past president of Greenpeace Canada (1971 to 1986), Dr. Patrick Moore. They discuss his time in Greenpeace, the historic timeline of global ice ages and climate change, the clear lies being peddled to promote alarmism, and how the woke left manipulates science (and scientists) to promote a falsely perceived and politically incentivized future catastrophe.

Dr. Patrick Moore has been a leader in the international environmental field for more than 45 years. He is a co-founder of Greenpeace and served for nine years as President of Greenpeace Canada and seven years as a Director of Greenpeace International. As the leader of many campaigns Dr. Moore was a driving force shaping policy and direction for 15 years while Greenpeace became the world's largest environmental activist organization.

In recent years, Dr. Moore has been focused on the promotion of sustainability and consensus building among competing concerns. He was a member of the British Columbia government-appointed Round Table on the Environment and Economy from 1990 - 1994. In 1990, Dr. Moore founded and chaired the BC Carbon Project, a group that worked to develop a common understanding of climate change.

In 2021 Dr. Moore published "Fake Invisible Catastrophes and Threats of Doom" exposing the fake news and fake science around 11 claims of disaster including climate change, coral reefs, polar bears, plastic, nuclear energy, and more.

Bridging the Gap Between Finance and Climate Change

Bridging the Gap Between Finance and Climate Change

In recent years, news headlines are frequently filled with announcements of financial institutions, funds, and corporations making hefty pledges to transform their portfolios to ensure that they stay in line with net-zero targets. Is this new wave of support for the energy transition motivated by making a quick buck or has there really been a change of opinion on the opportunities in which going net-zero really has to offer? How is the changing climate affecting investments? How are investors driving the transition? These are some of the key questions we look to answer in this episode.

The Energy Gang is delighted to be joined by two professionals who have spent the majority of their careers bridging the gap between finance and climate change. Our first guest, Shanu Mathew is the VP of Sustainable Investing and Net-Zero Research at Lazard Asset Management, one of the world's leading investment companies. Returning for another episode is Amy Myers Jaffe, the Managing Director of the Climate Policy Lab at the Fletcher School at Tufts University.

Ed Crooks and the rest of the gang discuss the importance of investors' positions in helping speed up the energy transition and how their work compares to recent government actions. Are organizations like the Task Force on Climate-Related Disclosures (TCFD) making up for the lack of political progress? Moving our focus, What are consumer-facing companies doing to address climate risk and sustainability? Are companies like Unilever an industry leader in sustainability reporting positive impacts? Lastly, the gang takes a look at the story of Indonesia moving its capital through a financial risk lens. How does climate change affect sovereign risk and municipal bonds? What is the answer in terms of financing climate adaptation and what is the government's role in this situation?

How we built it: IoT bikes that fight climate change

How we built it: IoT bikes that fight climate change

How do you connect 4,000 IoT bikes for a council, while making sure the connectivity consistently and reliably delivers crucial data about the city’s infrastructure?

With thousands of free bikes and cycle training, Birmingham City Council set out to promote healthier, greener lifestyles for their citizens. But the sensors on the bikes needed strong, reliable connectivity, so critical information like air quality and traffic flow could be delivered, regardless of where their citizens cycled.

It was clear only intelligent IoT connectivity could help, so we teamed up with our partner to deliver a solution that would make a serious impact on the city's carbon footprint and traffic congestion problem.

Our Sales Director Bernie McPhillips and our Operations Director Chris Romeika tell the story of how we made it happen in our latest podcast: from the nano SIMs, to the IoT sensors, to the revenue our partner earned.
