Try Building a Satellite

When you walk into TXST's Recreation Center, you're immediately greeted by one of the tallest indoor rock walls in Texas. Not only are TXST's students climbing new heights, but so is San Marcos. Giselle sat down with TXST's Rock Climbing president to chat about the sport, what it's like to do it outdoors, and everything that makes it so addicting. 

The TXST physics program has given students the chance to run a Space Lab, and with it, build the first ever manufactured satellite at TXST. Giselle chats with grad student Evan Jellison and senior Matthew Johnson about the Space Lab, physics, building the satellite, and why space is for everyone. 

The TXST Trap and Skeet club meets on Fridays out at Freeman Ranch to practice their aim, shoot some clays, and hang out. Safety Officer Hunter Haug and club Secretary Taylor Swanson discuss the intricacies and the simple fun of trap and skeet with Giselle, how to stay focused and calm while holding a gun, and what makes the club feel like a second family. 

On Alkek Library's first floor you can find a whole world of tech and information completely open to TXST students, staff, and faculty. Andrew Rechnitz and Tyler Davis sit down with Giselle for a conversation about the resources, opportunities, and skills Bobcats can access with Alkek One. 

KTSW 89.9 has been around since the ’90s, playing underground and lesser known artists for the San Marcos community and providing fun, interesting, skill-building job positions for TXST students. General Manager and faculty advisor Dan Schumacher talks to Giselle about his career at the radio station, the opportunities for students with the station, and how radio still lives on in a world of music streaming. 

From the hallways of Old Main to the showers of Sterry Hall, Texas State is no stranger to ghosts and spirits living on campus. Giselle takes us on a journey and meets with TXST staff and faculty who have had some spooky encounters in their time on campus. Listen if you dare. 

Located at Freeman Ranch just off of Ranch Road 12, Bobcat Farm is a student-founded, student-run farm-to-market garden that enriches the lives of both local San Martians and TXST students. Giselle chats with Emily Nickerson and Joshua Newton about how the farm began, the kind of research they are conducting, and how growing vegetables has impacted the Bobcat community.

Located in the LBJ Student Center, the Career Services office has everything you need to start your journey in the workforce. Giselle chats with Ray and Adrianna, members of the Career Services office, to learn about all they have to offer and how both students and alums can take advantage of it. 

The academic cocktail of singing lessons, language learning, acting, history of European performance, and stage production is what the TXST Opera program is built on. Director Marc Reynolds and student Mikayla Wallis shine a light on the beauty and depth of the age-old form of entertainment that still remains a flourishing art here at TXST.

The TXST eSports team has won championships, hosted intercollegiate competitions, and put together weekly showdowns of some of the most played games in the industry. President Enrique de la Torre and Super Smash Bros. captain Ray Rodriguez chat with Giselle about the ins and outs of the sport, the mental strategy it takes, and the kind of community it has built on TXST's campus.
