Wagner chief says Russia 'retreating' from Ukraine attacks & what the war in Syria shows us about the invasion of Ukraine

    enJune 23, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Mother's Day Gifts and Ukraine Conflict UpdatesMother's Day approaches with Blue Nile's jewelry offerings, while Ukraine sees gains against Russian forces and ongoing conflict

There are significant developments happening on various fronts in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Mother's Day is approaching, and for those looking for a special gift, Blue Nile offers a wide selection of jewelry with fast shipping and free returns. Meanwhile, in Ukraine, the counter offensive against Russian forces continues, with gains made in the Crimea area and fierce battles in the northeast. Ukrainian officials have hinted that reserves and newly equipped brigades will be activated for a major push in the coming days. The war in Ukraine remains a complex and active situation, with ongoing fighting and air strikes reported across the country. In other news, 1800flowers.com emphasizes the importance of celebrating all life's special occasions, and The Telegraph provides in-depth coverage of the conflict in Ukraine with expert analysis and updates from the newsroom.

    • Ukraine-Russia Conflict: Airstrikes, Casualties, and Diplomatic TensionsPolitical tensions and military conflicts continue between Ukraine and Russia, with accusations of high casualties and unnecessary warfare. Diplomatically, there's tension between Russia and Australia, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky raises concerns over a potential nuclear threat.

There are ongoing conflicts and tensions between Ukraine and Russia, with reports of airstrikes and military retreats. Notably, Ukrainian politician Evgeny Progyzyn accused Russian forces of high casualties and unnecessary warfare. Diplomatically, there's tension between Russia and Australia over a proposed embassy site in Canberra. Additionally, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky raised concerns about a potential radiation leak at the Zafarizhian nuclear power plant, leading to warnings and increased demand for iodine tablets. Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal expressed their concerns over the situation, highlighting the geopolitical implications. Overall, the situation remains volatile and uncertain, with potential repercussions for international relations.

    • Senators Graham and Blumenthal Warn Russia: Nuclear Threats or Attacks on NATO Allies' Nuclear Power Plants Could Trigger NATO ResponseTwo US senators introduced a draft resolution to the Senate, warning that any Russian nuclear threats or attacks on NATO allies' nuclear power plants could lead to a NATO response, including Article 5, which could result in massive military action.

Two senior US senators, Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal, have introduced a draft resolution to the US Senate, warning that if Russia or its proxy forces threaten NATO allies with nuclear weapons or destroy the Zaporizhzhian nuclear power plant, causing radiation, it would be considered an attack on NATO. They emphasized the seriousness of the situation and the potential consequences, including the use of Article 5, which could lead to a massive NATO response. Graham and Blumenthal also made it clear that the use of tactical nuclear weapons or the destruction of a nuclear power plant poses a significant risk to surrounding NATO nations, particularly Poland. The senators' statements reflect a bipartisan view in the Senate and send a clear message to Vladimir Putin and his military. The draft resolution is still pending a vote, but its introduction underscores the growing concern over Russia's actions in Ukraine and the potential for escalation.

    • Understanding the Complexity of the War in UkraineThe war in Ukraine is vast and complex, requiring ongoing reporting and engagement with people on the ground to gain a complete understanding.

The ongoing war in Ukraine presents a vast and complex landscape that is challenging for journalists to fully understand due to the conflict's size, reporting restrictions, and the difficulty of obtaining reliable information. The war's frontline is over a thousand miles long, and the sheer scale of the conflict makes it difficult to gain a comprehensive understanding of the situation. The experience of being on the ground provides valuable insights, but it's also essential to recognize the limitations of what can be learned in a short period. Volunteer organizations play a crucial role in providing aid to those affected by the conflict, but there are concerns about potential corruption and inefficiencies within the sector. Overall, it's important to recognize the complexity of the situation and the need for ongoing reporting and engagement with people on the ground to gain a more complete understanding of the war in Ukraine.

    • Volunteer efforts in Ukraine: Ukrainians lead the wayUkrainian volunteers play a crucial role in supporting their army and civilians, with external volunteers also contributing. Motivations vary, but sustainability is a concern for many.

The volunteer efforts in Ukraine, both from external organizations and Ukrainian citizens themselves, play a crucial role in supporting the Ukrainian army and civilians. While there are external volunteers traveling long distances to provide aid, the majority of the work is being done by Ukrainians. The experience of seeing the impact of their aid firsthand can be humbling and emotional for volunteers. The motivations of volunteers are diverse, ranging from humanitarian reasons to personal desires for adventure or escape from their own lives. However, the sustainability of their efforts is a concern as many have used their savings or previous earnings to support themselves and the duration of their stay is uncertain. A notable event that raised questions was Mayor Klitschko's response to his officials being caught in a bar after curfew, resulting in their dismissal. The impact on the late night bar scene in Ukraine is unclear.

    • Ukrainian people remain resilient amid ongoing challengesDespite the ongoing conflict, Ukrainian people continue to persevere and carry on with their lives, but the constant stress and inconsistent application of rules is taking a toll.

Despite the ongoing challenges and restrictions in Ukraine, including strict curfews and continued air alarms, the Ukrainian people remain resilient and determined to carry on with their lives. However, the constant stress and uncertainty of the ongoing conflict is taking a toll, and many are feeling angry and frustrated by the inconsistent application of rules by officials. The situation continues to evolve, and it remains to be seen how long these restrictions will continue. The experience of living through the war has brought a new level of understanding and personal connection to the news and events unfolding in Ukraine.

    • UN Rapporteur Alleges Widespread Russian Torture, Must Respond Within 60 DaysThe UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Nils Melzer, sent an allegation letter to the Russian government detailing numerous allegations of widespread and systemic torture, requiring a response within 60 days.

The UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Nils Melzer, has sent an allegation letter to the Russian government detailing numerous allegations of widespread and systemic torture, which they are required to respond to within 60 days. The allegations suggest a pattern of torture that goes beyond isolated incidents and implies a level of direction from above. Melzer couldn't speak specifically about individual cases due to potential criminal charges, but he did discuss his role and the relationship between his work and the International Criminal Court. He also confirmed receiving allegations of torture by Ukrainian forces and addressed the histories of other P5 nations in this area. Melzer's interview will be released on Monday, International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, and his conversation with Russia is expected to be publicized in early August. Additionally, The Telegraph's defense editor, Con Coughlin, discussed the impact of the Syrian Civil War on the conflict in Ukraine and the mistakes the West has made in handling geopolitical shifts in a recent interview. Coughlin, known for his extensive coverage of international affairs, has a long career with The Telegraph and has published a biography of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.

    • The Syrian conflict as a cautionary tale for inactionFailure to intervene militarily against Assad in 2013 led to half a million deaths and Russian tactics repeated in Ukraine ultimately failed due to Ukrainian military's organization and equipment.

That the Syrian conflict serves as a cautionary tale for the consequences of inaction by the international community. When the West failed to intervene militarily against Bashar al Assad's regime after the use of chemical weapons against his own people in 2013, it allowed the regime to survive, leading to a devastating war with half a million deaths. The lessons from Syria's tragic outcome are particularly relevant to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where some question the extent of Western involvement. The Russian involvement in both conflicts is also significant, with Russian tactics in Syria repeated in Ukraine but ultimately failing due to the Ukrainian military's organization and equipment. The Russian military's success in Syria emboldened Putin to launch his invasion of Ukraine, but the lessons learned from Syria proved to be incorrect, resulting in a military that was ill-prepared for the complexities of the Ukrainian conflict.

    • Relying on diverse sources to understand Syria's complex historyJournalist Robert Fisk delved into Syria's history using a variety of sources, including Syrian refugees, diplomats, intelligence personnel, and former ambassadors, to provide a nuanced perspective on the region's complexities.

Journalist Robert Fisk, who has spent over 30 years reporting on the Middle East, approached writing about Syria's complex and murky history by relying on a diverse range of sources. These sources included Syrians who had fled the regime after the civil war, diplomats, intelligence services, military personnel, and former ambassadors. Fisk was particularly appalled by the recent rehabilitation of the Assad regime by Arab nations, which he saw as a result of the growing influence of China in the Middle East and the perceived abandonment of traditional US allies by the Biden administration. Despite his personal feelings, Fisk acknowledged the political realities at play and the importance of understanding these dynamics in the region.

    • Geopolitical tensions between Iran and Israel remain a major concernThe potential for conflict between Iran and Israel remains high, but both sides understand the dire consequences of a direct military confrontation. Accountability for war crimes in Syria, such as those committed by Bashar al-Assad, is uncertain due to geopolitical reasons.

Despite geopolitical efforts to mend relations between Syria and the Arab League, the volatile situation between Iran and Israel continues to be a major concern due to Iran's nuclear program and expanding military presence in the Middle East. The potential for conflict between the two remains high, but both sides seem to understand the dire consequences of a direct military confrontation. Meanwhile, the prospect of holding Bashar al-Assad accountable for war crimes in Syria is uncertain due to geopolitical reasons, as was the case with the investigation into the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005. Despite the evidence pointing to Assad's involvement, the international community has yet to take decisive action against him.

    • Bringing perpetrators to justice for war crimesHistorically, political landscape changes can lead to accountability for war criminals, but decisive action and informed approach are crucial.

Historical events, particularly those involving war crimes and international conflicts, have shown that the political landscape can change and lead to accountability for perpetrators. However, this requires decisive action and a willingness to confront the issues at hand. For instance, during the Bosnian Civil War, the perpetrators of terrible atrocities were eventually brought to justice at The Hague. Similarly, there is hope that the same could happen to Bashar al Assad for his war crimes against the Syrian people. However, the West has made significant mistakes in the past, such as underestimating the threat of state-on-state conflict after the end of the Cold War and overreacting to terrorism threats after the September 11 attacks. These mistakes highlight the importance of a balanced and informed approach to global issues.

    • Ukraine-Russia Conflict: Challenges for Western LeadersThe Ukraine-Russia conflict underscores the complexities of global security issues and the need for Western leaders to remain united and vigilant against expanding powers like China.

The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia highlights the challenges Western leaders face in providing consistent and robust support for global security issues. While Ukraine has received significant backing in its resistance against Russian aggression, there are divisions within the Western alliance regarding the approach to take. Additionally, the military capabilities of some Western nations, such as the UK, are not in optimal condition to deploy forces effectively. Regarding the commitment to a Ukrainian victory, it's not guaranteed, with the level of American support being a significant factor. Furthermore, China's intentions should not be overlooked, as they aim to expand their influence and establish a foothold in regions like Ukraine. In summary, the situation in Ukraine serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges in addressing global security issues and the importance of staying vigilant towards the actions of major world powers like China.

I’ll tell you though who is. Second, an update to the China Balloon Saga this morning, with an assessment by a Democrat Senator from Montana that is spot on. Third, some updates on the War in Ukraine, with mostly bad news for Kiev. Finally, American taxpayers will be funding a new wind farm. But this one it’s not in America. It’s in Mexico. Later, we close out the podcast with an observation I had on a recent report about Afghanistan and it says that the Taliban won’t be bought off by Western money. Apparently that came as a shock to some folks in DC. Which only proves that The Smart People aren’t very smart at all.  ----- Please remember to subscribe if you enjoyed this episode of the President's Daily Brief.
