It's looking to be another big week for foreign affairs. Jack and Sam discuss what Britain can actually do after the death of Alexei Navalny. Plus, what the fall of Avdiivka means for the war in Ukraine ahead of the two-year anniversary of the invasion this week.
Meanwhile, after a tumultuous recess week, MPs are back. It's looking like a busy week ahead for Lord Cameron too, starting at the Munich Security Conference â but where was Rishi Sunak?
Plus, what can we expect from parliament's newest members? Gen Kitchen and Damian Egan, who last Friday morning were elected the Labour MPs for Wellingborough and Kingswood respectively, will be sworn into the Commons.

In the week between Christmas and New Year, we’re listening back to some of our favourite episodes of 2023.
Vladimir Putin may have averted an armed rebellion by Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin – but if the fall of Mikhail Gorbachev in 1991 tells us anything, it's that even a failed coup can still spell ruin for a leader.

The End for Russian Mercenary Chief Yevgeny Prigozhin?
As head of the Wagner Group, Prigozhin led an unsuccessful mutiny against the Russian military in June. He quickly stood down and struck a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin that would see him exiled to neighboring Belarus. That exile never came and questions swirled about what punishment, if any, Prigozhin would face for crossing Putin.

Russia's new Time of Troubles – with Vladislav Zubok
Following Yevgeny Prigozhin's short-lived mutiny in Russia, the New Statesman's China and Global Affairs Editor Katie Stallard speaks to the historian Vladislav Zubok about what the failed rebellion means for the future of Vladimir Putin's regime. Zubok is professor of international history at the London School of Economics and the author of multiple books including Collapse: The Fall of the Soviet Union. They discuss why Prigozhin decided to act when he did, what the crisis reveals about the stability of Putin's political system, and whether Russia is headed for a new Time of Troubles – the period of conflict and civil upheaval in the early 17th century that brought down the ruling Rurik dynasty.
