What Wagner did next - the rebranding of Putin’s secret weapon

What Wagner did next - the rebranding of Putin’s secret weapon

With Russia going to the polls this weekend, and President Putin’s grip on power tighter than ever, any semblance of meaningful opposition has been suppressed or driven out. One notable exception was the brief but bloody attempted mutiny last summer by the mercenaries of the Wagner Group. So with its challenge to Putin crushed, and its leadership dead…what came next for Wagner?

October 3rd, 2023: Iranian Influence, Ukraine's Corruption, and the Wagner Group's Next Era

October 3rd, 2023: Iranian Influence, Ukraine's Corruption, and the Wagner Group's Next Era
In this episode of The President's Daily Brief:   First up, we uncover an explosive story from Washington. A high-level Iranian influence ring has been exposed, and shockingly, now-suspended Iran envoy Robert Malley is implicated. The objective? To influence U.S. policy toward Iran. We'll trace this network from Tehran all the way to the corridors of power in Washington DC.   Later, we analyze a confidential U.S. strategy document, obtained by POLITICO. Despite their public assertions, Biden administration officials are deeply concerned about corruption in Ukraine.   Moving to the west coast, California Governor Gavin Newsom swiftly names Laphonza Butler to Senator Dianne Feinstein's seat, making history with the first openly lesbian Black member of Congress. But who is Ms. Butler? We'll delve into her career, which paradoxically champions both progressive and anti-progressive causes.   And on the Back of the Brief segment: The Wagner Group's leadership might see a familial successor. According to unofficial sources, Yevgeny Prigozhin's young son, Pavel, is poised to inherit his father's vast empire.   Please remember to subscribe if you enjoyed this episode of The President's Daily Brief. Prigozhin dead: Is Putin stronger than ever?

Prigozhin dead: Is Putin stronger than ever?

Yevgeny Prigozhin is apparently dead, two months after he marched the Wagner mercenary group to Moscow in a mutiny that appeared to be a very embarrassing weekend for Vladimir Putin.

Yesterday, a private plane crash also killed nine others, including his right hand man, the co-founder of the Wagner group, Dmitry Utkin.

So what actually happened? Was it an act of revenge from Putin? And is he now stronger than ever?

Jon and Lewis speak to Alicia Kearns MP, the chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee and ask foreign affairs expert Tim Marshall about the future for Russia.

    Group dynamics: Wagner in Africa

    Group dynamics: Wagner in Africa

Its leader is in exile and its future is uncertain. But the Wagner Group will be loth to abandon the influence and the cashflow that its murky African operations bring. The striking down of affirmative-action university-admissions policies in America may counterintuitively spur more-progressive and more-efficient alternatives (9:56). And the reinvention (again) of a beloved Chinese sweet treat (17:08).
