    enApril 11, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Prioritize health and tax deadlinesWhen sick, use Instacart for essentials and don't push through illness. Be cautious of tax scams and double-check forms for errors during tax season.

When you're feeling under the weather and the pressure to work is high, prioritize your health by utilizing services like Instacart for quick delivery of essentials. Don't feel obligated to push through illness just because a colleague is attending meetings while sick. Additionally, tax season is here, and the deadline to file or extend has been extended to April 18th. Be cautious of tax scams and double-check your forms for errors to avoid potential issues. The biggest errors taxpayers encounter include incorrectly reporting income, incorrect filing status, and math mistakes. Stay informed and take your time to ensure accuracy.

    • Common errors in paper tax returns include math mistakes and forgetting to signDouble check math and sign your tax return to avoid errors, whether filing yourself or using a tax preparer.

Accuracy and attention to detail are crucial when filing taxes, whether you're doing it yourself or using a tax preparer. For those who still file paper returns, common errors include math mistakes and forgetting to sign the return. Electronic filing programs can help eliminate these errors by doing the math for you and ensuring a digital signature. For those who use tax preparers, it's essential to review the return carefully before signing it to ensure all deductions and information are correct. Never hand a blank form to anyone and always ask questions to avoid potential risks.

    • Choosing the Right Tax Preparer: Responsibilities and CautionsTaxpayers must ensure tax return accuracy, but reputable preparers face consequences for errors. Carefully select a trustworthy professional, avoid promises of large refunds or long processing times, and be aware of varying fees based on return complexity.

Taxpayers are ultimately responsible for the accuracy of their tax returns, even if they use a tax preparer. However, this doesn't mean that tax preparers won't face consequences for fraudulent or erroneous returns. Taxpayers should choose a reputable tax professional carefully, as they will handle sensitive personal information. Regarding extensions, taxpayers should be cautious of preparers who promise large refunds or take an excessively long time to complete returns. Fees for tax preparation services can vary greatly depending on the complexity of the return and the taxpayer's specific situation. It's important for taxpayers to be wary of unrealistic promises and to communicate clearly with their tax preparer to ensure a timely and accurate filing.

    • Maximizing Refunds Regardless of AgeMaintain accurate records and consider itemizing deductions to maximize your refund, regardless of age. Consult a tax professional for personalized advice.

There is no specific age requirement when it comes to hiring a tax preparer. People seek tax preparation services at various stages of their lives, depending on their financial situation and business growth. This year, the tax codes have undergone some changes, resulting in smaller refunds for some individuals. However, the best way to maximize your refund is by maintaining accurate records and considering itemizing deductions if your expenses exceed the standard deduction. Remember, everyone's financial situation is unique, so it's essential to consult with a tax professional for personalized advice.

    • Avoid identity theft by filing taxes on timeFile taxes promptly to minimize identity theft risk, be cautious of fraudulent notices and phishing attempts, and contact the IRS for official communication.

It's important to file your taxes in a timely manner to avoid identity theft. The IRS releases a list of scams, known as the "Dirty Dozen," every year. Even though the incidence of these scams is decreasing, it can still take weeks or months to resolve an identity theft issue. If you receive a notice that a fraudulent tax return has been filed in your name, follow the instructions carefully and contact the IRS through the provided official phone number. Be wary of phishing and smishing attempts, as the IRS does not communicate through text messages or emails. This year, the IRS has seen an increase in scams related to employee retention credits. Remember, the sooner you file your taxes, the less time scammers have to steal your identity.

    • IRS Communication Preferences: Mail OnlyThe IRS mainly communicates via mail and doesn't call or email unsolicited. Be cautious of phishing scams and always double-check the IRS website for official information.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) primarily communicates with taxpayers via mail. If there's a question or issue with a return, the IRS will send a notice in the mail, not call or email unsolicited. While there are subscriptions available for email updates on the IRS website, these are the exception, not the rule. Additionally, the IRS will never ask for personal information like social security numbers or PINs over the phone or email. On a different note, according to the CDC, 74% of Americans are overweight, emphasizing the need for weight loss and metabolic health improvement. Prolon, a structured plant-based nutrition program, can help support cellular rejuvenation, and streaming listeners can receive a 10% discount by visiting prolonlife.com/offer before March 31st.

Why are accessible swimming lessons crucial for preventing drownings?

Why are accessible swimming lessons crucial for preventing drownings?

Knowing how to swim isn't just out of fun for the summer, it's also important to recognize that not everyone has always had the opportunity to learn to swim. This is why it is so important to recognize, in order to save lives around the water-- swimming lessons should be available for everyone.

"Only 46% of Black and 47% of Latine children had swimming lessons, compared to 72% of white children," according to a parent survey (Northwestern/Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago). Studies show there is a generational influence, if the parent doesn't know how to swim, most likely, the child will not learn either.

To help break this cycle, the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas is stepping in with the goal to eliminate childhood drowning (CDC says drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4). The Y partners with apartment complexes across the metroplex to offer free Safety Around Water lessons (SAW) to children who otherwise wouldn't have access. Last year, the SAW program served 5,834 swimmers!

On Ask the Expert, Jen Pewitt joined the KRLD Afternoon News. She is the Vice President of the YMCA Metropolitan Dallas.
