    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Subfloor ventilation is the process of allowing air to circulate under your property if you've got a timber floor.
    • It prevents moisture build-up that can lead to mould, mildew, rot, insect infestations, and structural damage.
    • A mushroomy smell, damaged wood, sponginess, and red dust are a sign the subfloor ventilation is not right.
    • Some places are built over streams.
    • Install continuously running fans in your kitchen and bathroom as a minimum.
    • Insect infestations can lead to collapse, so never ignore the signs.
    • Longhorn beetles are a growing issue in the UK, in particular in the south.

    BEST MOMENTS

“There are several solutions for subfloor ventilation depending on the specific needs of your property.”

“There's passive vents and powered vents”

“Have a professional assess any signs of fungal decay or wood boring insects in subfloors,”

“Look after your subfloors and they will look after you.”

National Apprentice Week - Consultation Service - Mould Pro Meeting

National Apprentice Week - Consultation Service - Mould Pro Meeting

Today’s episode of The Damp Show is an interesting and varied one. Sam has been busy this past week setting up a new mould consultation service and trying out a mould treatment system that has been developed in Australia, Singapore, and New Zealand. As well as killing the mould it leaves a film behind that continues to stop regrowth for a prolonged period.

Sam also has two surveys to tell you about and a new mould consultation service that he is considering rolling out. He also talks about what the PCA is doing for National Apprentice Week.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • There is a big difference between the bespoke damp survey Sam does and the general overviews some other companies provide, which is explained in the episode.
    • Each damp issue has a different solution, which is why it is very important to correctly identify the underlying cause.
    • Sam is considering offering an onsite advice consulting service as well as his standard survey product. It will enable those who want to do the work themselves to tap into his knowledge.
    • The PCA runs apprenticeships for those who want to work in the damp industry.
    • At the moment, the Mould Pro kit that was developed in Australia can only be used by professionals.
    • Mould Pro is an effective mould killer and the film that is left behind carries on killing the mould for a prolonged period of time.

Surveying The Wrong House - Why You Shouldn't Use a Calor Gas Heater – Being Recommended by Roofers

Surveying The Wrong House - Why You Shouldn't Use a Calor Gas Heater – Being Recommended by Roofers

Today’s episode of The Damp Show covers quite a mix of subjects and includes a funny but informative story about a mistake Sam recently made. He explains why despite Calor Gas being one of the cheapest ways to heat a space using it is actually not a good idea. It can end up costing you a lot of money.

Get Your FREE E-Book PLUS More Great Content, Courses and Advice @ www.dampsam.com

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Using a Calor Gas heater is a false economy.
    • Calor Gas heaters chuck out 8 litres of water into the air, per bottle.
    • Now people have had their windows shut tight for a few weeks the resulting trapped condensation has led to a lot of extra damp problem callouts.
    • Invest in continuous fans to keep the air moving and bring fresh air in. It is an efficient way to keep damp and mould at bay.
    • Missing pointing can lead to significant water ingress.
    • If you are a contractor, ask for the house number, the postcode and street name is not enough information.
    • Measure twice, cut once really is good advice. Double-check everything.
    • Antimould paint is expensive, but it works. Don´t be tempted to skimp on things by using ordinary paint. It won´t work.

    BEST MOMENTS

“Ventilation, insulation and a bit of heat, that´s what you need to be doing.”

“For advice, you´ve got all my free stuff on YouTube that you can watch and over 100 podcasts.”

“When I done it before, I knocked on door and the person who answered were staring at me with chef eyes.”

Not a Damp Show - The Good Landlord Charter - Landlord Ignores Report

Not a Damp Show - The Good Landlord Charter - Landlord Ignores Report

Today’s episode of The Damp Show covers The Good Landlord Charter, what happens when landlords ignore the actions recommended in a damp survey. He also explains why it is so easy to misdiagnose the underlying cause of damp issues.

Despite the title, this really is a damp show. A gold mine full of little nuggets of information that others rarely share. Information damp professionals, landlords, tenants, and homeowners can use to keep their homes free from damp and mould, which can lead to life-threatening health issues.

Get Your FREE E-Book PLUS More Great Content, Courses and Advice @ www.dampsam.com

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • The Good Landlord Charter is due to be implemented in Manchester. There are already signs that it could be rolled out across the UK.
    • A lot of estate agents still think that a free or unbelievably cheap damp survey is enough to tick the box on a mortgage application. This is rarely the case anymore.
    • Check the small print of guarantees. Some damp treatment firms require homeowners to install and run continuous fans. If they don´t and the mould comes back, they may not honour the guarantee.
    • Before having work done, make sure the company has proper public liability insurance.
    • If you are in the PCA you automatically become a Trustmark member.
    • If timber has saturation higher than 20% it is more at risk of fungal attack.
    • Damp surveyors who invest in themselves and take PCA courses are able to earn more. They know more and can solve complex damp and mould problems.
    • Tenants have up to 6 years to complain about damp and mould problems. That is the case even if they have left the property.

    BEST MOMENTS

“The worst thing in our industry is a misdiagnosis.”

“I want it changing to be relevant for 2024 not f**ing 1974, walking around in bell bottoms.”

“I invested in myself, I went to PCA… I spent a lot of hours studying things.”

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • You can be strong enough to play, but if you are not super-fit you will be prone to injuries.
    • Despite an operation for a chipped bone in his back, Alex was still able to bat well but it was limiting.
    • The Australians are genuinely nuts about cricket. Regardless of what level you play at, there are always plenty of opportunities.
    • While playing for Barnsley, Alex was the first person to score 1000 runs, since Geoffrey Boycott.
    • Working for the fire service reminds Alex of cricket. Listen to find out why.

    BEST MOMENTS

“How Shane Warne pinched my fiancée… it weren´t like that really.”

“I think it was a strange injury.”

“I got this fresh fish and put it behind his pad…I forgot about it.”

Alex Morris Former First-Class Cricketer – Part 1 of 2

Alex Morris Former First-Class Cricketer – Part 1 of 2

Today’s episode of The Damp Show is a bit different. Sam is taking a bit of a break from damp and mould to talk to one of his local Barnsley heroes and friends, Alex Morris the former first-class cricketer and footballer.

This fun and light-hearted episode is one of two which are all about Alex´s cricketing career. Alex explains how he went from being a sporty kid to playing cricket for England, Yorkshire, or Hampshire. Alex provides a fascinating insight into the ups and downs of playing professionally.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Starting early and playing for fun provided Alex with the foundation for his sporting prowess.
    • The more chances kids have to play the better, which is why school sports are so vital.
    • Sporty kids need to be encouraged to do well academically too. A sports career does not last forever, so it is critical to continually build other skills to fall back on.
    • Because the football and cricket seasons didn’t overlap, Alex played both competitively.
    • In the UK on average only 2 or 3 of an academy team will play internationally.
    • Alex played professionally for Yorkshire and Hampshire and youth test matches for England.
    • Following your passion matters, sometimes that means making sacrifices like the one Alex made to ensure he continued to play instead of sitting on the sidelines as a reserve.

    BEST MOMENTS

“We must have played 5000 games.”

“I never felt as though I didn’t want to do well at Maths, English whatever.”

“Yorkshire wanted me as backup, which I can understand, but I just wanted to play cricket.”

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • The best damp surveyors have experience in doing the work needed to cure the underlying issues.
    • RICS surveyors are not the right type of surveyor to call in if you have damp issues. You need a damp specialist.
    • Injecting silicon for rising damp is nowhere near as effective as the modern damp-proofing creams that can seep into the materials.
    • There are many different types of bridging.
    • If you have a damp issue that was not addressed promptly you can lodge a claim for up to 6 years after the event.
    • If you are working in a mouldy workplace, get your union involved as well as report it.
    • Putting a fan on a timer, is not effective. You need one that runs constantly, they don´t cost a lot to run.

    BEST MOMENTS

“One-fifth of homes in England and Scotland have got mould issues.”

“Every company has different prices because we all have different overheads.”

“It´s a belting piece of legislation….for me it´s like watching porn.”
