    Podcast Summary

    • Personal connectionsHaving personal connections with people can add a deeper layer of understanding and appreciation, and recognizing their humanity beyond the spotlight can make losses feel more profound.

Having personal connections with people, whether it be through interviews, friendships, or even just meeting them in person, can add a deeper layer of understanding and appreciation for them. This was highlighted in the conversation between Ryan and Jordan Harbinger, where they discussed their long-standing friendship and the impact it had on their professional relationship. Additionally, the realization that many interviewees have passed away led Ryan to reflect on the importance of recognizing the humanity behind the public figure. This understanding can make the loss feel more profound, as it serves as a reminder that behind every celebrity or expert is a real person with a life beyond the spotlight.

    • Aging and MortalityThe passage of time brings a sense of aging and mortality, making us reflect on the long-term nature of our endeavors and cherish moments before they pass

The passage of time brings about a sense of aging and mortality, which can be both profound and sad. Whether it's the aging of inanimate objects like hotels or the growth and development of children, time moves forward relentlessly. The speaker reflects on the long-term nature of his own endeavors, such as podcasting for 18 years, and how it makes him feel old. He also ponders the idea of letting go of things, like outgrown children's items, and the sadness that comes with it. The speaker also touches on the idea of cherishing moments, even the seemingly mundane ones, before they pass, as they may never come again. Ultimately, the speaker encourages embracing the authenticity of aging and the wisdom it brings, rather than trying to hold onto the past or resist the inevitable.

    • Being presentFocus on the moment instead of getting lost in distractions for a fulfilling life, while also recognizing the importance of mental and physical well-being and continuous learning.

While holding onto memories through photographs or experiences can bring joy, it's essential to be fully present in those moments instead of getting lost in distractions like social media. High performers, such as athletes and podcasters, often push themselves to the limit, leading to burnout and the need for retirement or a change in lifestyle. It's crucial to find balance and prioritize mental and physical well-being. Additionally, recognizing and understanding Black History is important, and it's never too late to learn and educate oneself. Overall, living in the moment, being present, and striving for self-improvement are key to a fulfilling life.

    • Wealth and stressWealth and success do not guarantee freedom from stress or guilt. Managing possessions, pressure to excel, and neglected relationships can lead to a lack of enjoyment and focus on improvement rather than appreciation.

Wealth and success do not automatically bring freedom from stress or guilt. People with vast fortunes often face mundane problems and can become preoccupied with managing their possessions, leading to a lack of enjoyment and a focus on improvement rather than appreciation. Additionally, the pressure to excel in their areas of expertise can make it easier to neglect important relationships and responsibilities, particularly in raising children. Ultimately, the challenges of everyday life, including relationships and personal growth, can be more difficult to navigate than professional success.

    • Comparison TrapComparison can lead to unhealthy feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction, focusing on what others have instead of one's own accomplishments. Instead, focus on unique strengths and contributions, and find fulfillment in the journey.

People, even those who have achieved great success, can struggle with feelings of inadequacy and a desire for validation, often comparing themselves to others. This can manifest in various ways, such as seeking out new projects or pursuits that seem more impressive or desirable, or feeling envious of those who have larger audiences or more public recognition. These feelings can be distressing and unhealthy, leading to a sense of dissatisfaction and a focus on what one doesn't have rather than on one's own accomplishments. It's important to remember that comparison is a trap and that everyone has unique strengths and contributions to offer. Instead of focusing on what others have, it's more productive to focus on one's own goals and passions, and to find fulfillment in the journey rather than in the destination.

    • Comparing ourselves to othersJealousy often arises from incomplete information and focusing on others' perceived successes. Instead, learn from their choices and focus on personal growth.

Jealousy often stems from comparing ourselves to others based on perceived incomplete information. We may assume that others have it all, but in reality, they too may be struggling and dealing with their own challenges. Moreover, it's essential to remember that everyone's life is a product of their unique experiences, choices, and circumstances. Instead of focusing on envy, we can learn from those who seem to have it all by examining the choices they've made that led them there. Additionally, it's important to remember that we cannot trade our lives with someone else's, and we should focus on making positive changes in our own lives rather than trying to replicate someone else's. Lastly, reading and preparing thoroughly for interviews or projects can lead to better outcomes and a stronger reputation.

    • Entrepreneurship and Self-ImprovementEntrepreneurs should prioritize learning and self-improvement, even if it means sacrificing comforts or time. The quest for immortality may be absurd, but cherishing life's moments is essential.

Prioritizing learning and self-improvement is crucial for entrepreneurs, even if it means sacrificing some comforts or time. The example of Brian Johnson, who sold his company for a large sum and then became a YouTuber, illustrates this point. However, the quest for immortality and the desire to live forever can be seen as absurd and even comical, as death is inevitable. The stoics, including Marx, encourage us to reflect on our fear of death and recognize the absurdity of life. As parents, we must also have open and honest conversations with our children about the realities of life and death, while trying to shield them from unnecessary anxiety. Ultimately, it's essential to find a balance between accepting the absurdity of life and cherishing the moments that make it worth living.

    • Impact of words and actions on art and peopleOur words and actions towards art and people can have unexpected impacts. We should approach them with an open mind and consider the context before passing judgment.

Our words and actions, especially towards art and entertainment, can have unexpected impacts. The speaker shared a personal example of how she initially dismissed a movie, but later came to appreciate it deeply. She also mentioned how Tina Fey's advice about not speaking negatively about movies or people resonated with her. The speaker also touched upon the Stoic philosophy of Seneca, who, despite having a terrible boss, never spoke ill of him out of fear for his safety. This conversation highlights the importance of being mindful of our words and recognizing the potential consequences of our actions and criticisms. It's a reminder to approach art and people with an open mind and to consider the context and circumstances before passing judgment.

Attention Wars: How Lies Spread Online Have Real-World Consequences | Renée DiResta

Attention Wars: How Lies Spread Online Have Real-World Consequences | Renée DiResta

“If you make it trend, you make it true” is a terrifyingly real quote across the cover of Renée DiResta’s book, Invisible Rulers: The People Who Turn Lies Into Reality. Renée DiResta studies the many ways that people attempt to manipulate or target others online, similar to what Ryan talks about in his first book, Trust Me, I’m Lying. In this episode, Renée and Ryan talk about the shift from traditional journalism ethics to the new realm of social media influence, the psychological impact of online engagement, and the societal consequences of misinformation.

    It’s Tragic But Helpful

    It’s Tragic But Helpful

The Stoics were not so insensitive as to believe that it was good that someone died. That’s not what they meant by “opportunity”—what they meant was that there was always something to learn, always some virtue we could practice in light of a tragedy that would make us better, teach us something, help us see something.

🪙 Designed with the intention of carrying them in your pocket, our Memento Mori Medallion is a literal and inescapable reminder that “you could leave life right now.”
