What’s REALLY Happening on College Campuses - Rikki Schlott

    enMarch 06, 2024

    Podcast Summary

    • University campuses face a crisis over free speechUniversities must foster open dialogue to prevent the suppression of controversial topics and the emergence of extremist views.

The current state of American university campuses, particularly elite institutions, is facing a crisis regarding free speech and open dialogue. This issue has come to the forefront in recent months, with instances of censorship and intolerance towards opposing viewpoints becoming increasingly prevalent. The speakers in this discussion, who have firsthand experience with this issue, argue that the lack of an environment where free speech can flourish has led to the suppression of controversial topics, which can ultimately result in extremist views emerging during times of social unrest. For instance, the Israel-Palestine conflict, which has long been a contentious issue on campuses, has led to egregious examples of anti-Semitism at schools like Harvard, which has been consistently ranked as having the worst record for free speech. The speakers believe that universities have a responsibility to foster open dialogue and should not shy away from difficult conversations, as the suppression of free speech can lead to the festering and eventual eruption of extreme views.

    • Colleges straying from free speech values create self-censorship and intoleranceColleges that silence unpopular opinions risk fostering an intolerant learning environment, stunting healthy debate and personal growth.

Colleges and universities that stray from the core values of free speech and civil expression risk creating an environment of self-censorship and intolerance for diverse viewpoints. The speaker, a former student, shared personal experiences of this at New York University and Lawrenceville, where professors and peers shamed or silenced those expressing unpopular opinions. The lack of leadership from professors, fear of backlash, and the presence of politically biased instructors further perpetuated this issue. The speaker emphasized that young people have always been prone to extremes, but the consistent absence of healthy debate and exploration of different perspectives is concerning. To illustrate, examples were given of attempts to silence Milo Yiannopoulis and a student's pro-life stance in a philosophy class, where professors failed to intervene. This climate of fear and intolerance can significantly impact the academic experience and students' personal growth.

    • Childhood experiences shape political awakeningEarly experiences can influence political beliefs, encourage open dialogue and diverse perspectives to prevent pushing children towards opposing views.

Experiences in childhood, such as being segregated during Martin Luther King Day celebrations at school, can shape one's political awakening and awareness of social issues. These experiences can lead to a deep-seated disagreement with certain ideologies and a desire to challenge the status quo. For parents, it's essential to provide their children with diverse perspectives and avoid imposing their own ideologies, as doing so could potentially push children towards opposing viewpoints. Communication and open dialogue are key to helping children navigate complex issues and develop a strong foundation for understanding the world around them.

    • Discussing controversial topics with young peopleEncouraging epistemic humility and open dialogue can protect children from harmful ideologies. Adults should engage in conversations and provide a safe space for questioning and learning.

Instilling epistemic humility and encouraging open dialogue about controversial topics from a young age can help protect children against harmful ideologies and isolating experiences. The speaker, Ricky, shared his personal experience of facing cancel culture at a progressive school despite receiving support from unexpected sources. He emphasized that young people are not to blame for embracing these ideologies when they're constantly reinforced in their environments. This conversation also highlighted the importance of having adults, like parents or teachers, engage in conversations with children about these issues and provide them with a safe space to question and learn. Even though Ricky didn't directly confront the school administration about the issues during his time as a student, he took a stand and spoke out through an op-ed when he was older. The fear of cancel culture and the need to keep conversations hidden can make individuals feel isolated, but taking the first step to discuss these topics openly can lead to discovering that others share similar thoughts.

    • Feeling Stifled: The Courage to Break FreeBoth the speaker and Ricky shared experiences of feeling suffocated in environments that didn't align with their beliefs or values. They found the courage to break free and stay true to themselves, serving as reminders to do the same.

Both the speaker and Ricky shared experiences of feeling stifled in environments that didn't align with their beliefs or values. The speaker described growing up during a time when color blindness was an ideal, and she felt fortunate to have had friends regardless of race. However, she recognizes that this era is disappearing, and kids today are growing up in a more segregated, affinity group era. Ricky shared his experience of feeling suffocated by the academic achievement culture at NYU, where he felt he couldn't express his viewpoints without fear of academic repercussions. When the pandemic hit, he saw the exorbitant cost of online education and felt he couldn't justify continuing his law degree. Instead, he chose to follow his passion for free speech and conservative values by writing for the New York Post and working for FIRE. Both individuals found the courage to break free from environments that didn't align with their values, and their stories serve as reminders to stay true to oneself, even when it's challenging.

    • Questioning the Value of Higher EducationConsider career goals and the value of a degree before committing to high education debt. Self-motivated individuals may find success without a degree.

The current higher education system in the US is facing scrutiny from young people who question its value due to high debt and perceived lack of practical skills. The speaker shares their personal experience of attending college and the benefits they gained, but also emphasizes the importance of finding one's passion early and having a clear career goal before investing in higher education. The speaker also mentions the trend of major companies dropping degree requirements as they recognize the potential of self-motivated individuals. Overall, the speaker suggests that young people should carefully consider their career goals and the value of a degree before making the financial commitment.

    • Exploring practical pathways earlier in academiaConsider gap years, apprenticeships, networking, and self-directed learning for valuable insights and experiences, instead of a traditional liberal arts degree before deciding a major.

Students should explore practical pathways earlier in their academic careers and consider taking gap years to gain real-world experience and explore their interests. The traditional liberal arts degree before deciding a major is not always necessary or cost-effective. Apprenticeships, networking, and self-directed learning can provide valuable insights and experiences. The speakers also emphasized the importance of intellectual freedom and autonomy in personal growth and the value of exploring passions outside of prescribed academic material. The high cost of education and the potential for graduating with a useless degree and overwhelming debt are significant concerns. Ultimately, young people should be encouraged to take time for introspection and exploration before committing to a specific career path.

    • Securing online data with ExpressVPNProtect your personal information and maintain privacy using ExpressVPN on unencrypted networks to prevent hackers from accessing sensitive data.

Protecting your online data has become more important than ever, especially when using unencrypted networks. Hackers can easily access your personal information, including passwords and financial details, and sell it on the dark web for significant profits. ExpressVPN is a simple and effective solution to secure your data and maintain privacy. Moving on to the discussion about the decline of the graduate premium, rising education costs, and the influence of woke culture on campuses, the recent events post-October 7th have highlighted the context-dependent nature of bullying and harassment. Several college presidents have been questioned about whether calling for the genocide of Jews constitutes harassment or not. The answers varied, with some stating that it depends on the context, while others acknowledged that it could be harassment. This ambiguity raises concerns about the dehumanization of Jewish students and the normalization of anti-Semitic rhetoric. It is essential to understand that such rhetoric, when it crosses into conduct, can be actionable and violate the codes of conduct of many institutions. It is crucial to acknowledge and address such incidents to maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment.

    • Free speech on college campuses: A cause for concernUniversities have set a low threshold for acceptable speech, leading to professors being fired or sanctioned for their comments, fueled by federal loans and financial power, and necessitating a reevaluation of the current approach.

The current state of free speech on college campuses in America is a cause for concern. The threshold for acceptable speech has been set so low that schools have created hotlines for students to report perceived bias or offensive comments. This culture, fueled by federally backed student loans and the financial power of universities, has led to a significant number of professors being fired or sanctioned for their speech in the past decade. The hypocrisy of university presidents suddenly championing free speech when it's convenient for them is evident when looking at the historical context of this issue. Instances of extreme cases, such as a professor equating COVID lockdowns with slavery, leading to professors being fired and even suicide, highlight the need for a reevaluation of the current approach to free speech on campus.

    • College campuses prioritize protectionism over free speechCollege students seek edgy expression in a highly progressive environment, leading to controversial actions, but the trend underscores the need for a balanced approach to free speech and expression.

The college campus environment has seen a shift from prioritizing free speech to protectionism, leading to a new frontier for students seeking to push boundaries and feel edgy. This change is attributed to the widespread acceptance of progressive ideologies on campus, where administrators and professors often validate students' viewpoints and cater to their demands. As a result, some students have turned to supporting controversial causes, such as cheering for mass slaughter in foreign countries, as the last form of transgression in this highly progressive environment. This trend, while not an excuse for such actions, highlights the extreme nature of political ideologies on college campuses and the need for a more balanced approach to free speech and expression.

    • The belief that words can be violent leads to acceptance of violenceBelief in restricting free speech to protect people can lead to acceptance of violence as a response.

The rejection of free speech and the belief that words can be violent leads to the acceptance of violence as a response. This mindset, which is increasingly prevalent on college campuses, particularly in elite universities and women's colleges, can be attributed to the infantilization of people and the belief that it's necessary to protect others from harm. However, it's important to note that this issue isn't limited to the left; the right is also exhibiting similar behaviors, particularly online. Our partnership, which brings together different generations and political perspectives, highlights the importance of understanding this complex issue from various angles.

    • Fighting Ideas with Ideas: The Importance of Free Speech and Open DialogueIn today's political climate, both the left and right are pushing aside free speech and apolitical discourse through harmful tactics. Instead of censoring each other, it's crucial to engage in open and respectful dialogue, challenge ideas, and promote a culture of free speech and intellectual diversity.

The fundamental classical liberal values of free speech and apolitical discourse are being pushed aside in today's political climate, with both the left and right engaging in harmful tactics. The left's cancel culture and illiberalism are concerning, but the right's response of fighting might with might through unconstitutional laws is equally problematic. Instead of censoring each other, it's essential to fight ideas with ideas and fully exercise free speech. The silence and self-censorship of many people have led to a culture of submission, where students and professors are hesitant to speak out against extreme ideologies. To effectively combat illiberalism, it's crucial to engage in open and respectful dialogue, challenge ideas, and promote a culture of free speech and intellectual diversity.

    • Fear of backlash prevents individuals from speaking up against cancel culture and political correctnessAmericans agree cancel culture and political correctness have gone too far, but fear of ostracism and job loss prevents many from challenging the status quo. Hope lies in increased parental engagement, free speech discussions, pandemic awareness, and Elon Musk's Twitter takeover.

Despite the majority of Americans agreeing that cancel culture and political correctness have gone too far, there's a feeling of powerlessness among individuals to speak up and challenge the status quo. This issue is not limited to any political affiliation. The fear of being ostracized or losing one's job prevents many from raising concerns. However, there are signs of hope, such as increased parental engagement in education and the shift in the Overton window towards free speech discussions. The pandemic has served as a wake-up call for many, making them more aware of the importance of protecting individual liberties and engaging in the civic process. Additionally, recent developments like Elon Musk taking over Twitter have led to improvements in the handling of controversial topics on social media. Overall, it's crucial for individuals to come together and challenge the tyranny of the minority to create a more balanced and inclusive society.

    • Censorship pushes harmful opinions to alternative platformsCensorship can drive harmful opinions to other echo chambers, potentially making them more extreme. Encouraging open dialogue and diverse perspectives is key to challenging and shaping harmful opinions.

Censorship and banning individuals or groups from online platforms may not eliminate harmful or extreme opinions, but instead drive them to other echo chambers where they can flourish and potentially become even more extreme. The study mentioned found that mass bans on Twitter led to an increase in users joining alternative platforms like Gab. Instead of silencing these opinions, it's essential to encourage open dialogue and debate, allowing for diverse perspectives to challenge and shape each other. The younger generation, particularly Gen Z, holds the most negative view of cancel culture, having grown up in an age where they feel the pressure of constant scrutiny and potential consequences for their online actions. However, there's also hope that the courage and strength in numbers demonstrated by Gen Z can lead to progress and improvement in the way we approach cancel culture. Ultimately, it's crucial to foster an environment where individuals can express themselves freely while also being held accountable for their actions and words.

    • Discussing cancel culture and birth controlYoung people need education in classical liberal values to challenge cancel culture and promote free speech. Birth control may have negative effects on women's psychology and overall wellbeing, as well as potential environmental consequences.

While young people may not currently have the ideological framework to address cancel culture and promote free speech, they have the motivation to do so if given the proper tools and education in classical liberal values. Another important issue that was touched upon during the conversation was the potential negative effects of the birth control pill on young women's psychology and overall wellbeing. The conversation also hinted at the potential environmental impact of large-scale birth control use. These are important topics that deserve more attention and discussion. It's crucial for parents and educators to be aware of these issues and encourage open conversations about them. Overall, the conversation highlighted the importance of promoting free speech and individual liberties, as well as raising awareness about potential health and environmental risks associated with certain common practices.
