Will 2024 Republicans Support A National Ban On Abortion?

    en-usJune 26, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • One year after Roe v. Wade overturned, patchwork of abortion access creates healthcare crisis for womenThe overturning of Roe v. Wade has resulted in a patchwork of abortion access, leading to a healthcare crisis for women in some states, and increased pressure on infrastructure and providers in others.

The overturning of Roe v. Wade one year ago has led to a dramatically different landscape for abortion access in the United States. While some states have virtually no legal abortion, others have enacted protections. The result is a patchwork of access that has created a healthcare crisis for many women. Even in states where abortion is legal, there is increased pressure on the infrastructure and providers. During the Dobbs anniversary, both the President and Vice President emphasized the health care argument, highlighting stories of women who needed procedures but were denied due to health crises.

    • Abortion Rights Debate Intensifies Ahead of 2024 ElectionDemocrats urge women to speak out and push for codifying Roe v. Wade, while Republicans celebrate Supreme Court's decision to overturn it and campaign on the issue. Midterm elections saw success for Democrats, but Republicans plan to go on the offensive.

The debate over abortion rights in the United States is intensifying, with both Democrats and Republicans making their cases to voters ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Democrats are urging women to make their voices heard and are pushing for Congress to codify Roe v. Wade, while Republicans are celebrating the Supreme Court's decision to overturn it and are campaigning on the issue. The midterm elections saw success for Democrats on the issue, with voters generally supporting abortion rights when given the chance. However, Republicans are looking to go on the offensive and make the issue a key part of their campaigns. Former President Donald Trump, in particular, is taking credit for delivering on his promise to appoint justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade. The struggle for control of this contentious issue will continue to shape the political landscape in the coming months.

    • Republican Candidates Debate Abortion RightsSome Republicans advocate for a national ban on abortion, while others support a state-by-state approach. Mint Mobile offers affordable wireless plans as a solution to inflation concerns.

The debate among Republican presidential candidates regarding abortion rights continues to intensify, with some advocating for a national ban and others supporting a state-by-state approach. Mike Pence, a former vice president, called for a federal ban at the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference, while some candidates like Chris Christie and Nikki Haley have suggested working towards consensus but do not see a national ban as realistic. Trump, who overturned Roe v Wade, seems to maintain support from voters despite not taking a clear stance on the issue. Meanwhile, inflation remains a concern for Americans, with Mint Mobile offering premium wireless plans starting at $15 a month as a solution.

    • Republicans struggle to define stance on abortion laws post-Roe v. WadeRepublicans face public pressure to clarify their positions on abortion exceptions and timing of bans, potentially putting them on the defensive.

The Republican Party is grappling with defining a clear stance on abortion laws following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Despite most Americans opposing the overturning of Roe v. Wade and not supporting the Dobbs decision, Republican candidates are aiming to find common ground with the public on where to draw the line on abortion. Some Republicans want to push for stricter measures, while others are being pragmatic and focusing on what they believe they can sell to the American public. The debate is being reshuffled as Republicans are now being asked to publicly take positions on exceptions and the timing of bans, which are out of line with what voters have expressed in polls. This shift in focus could potentially lead to Republican candidates being on the defensive on the abortion issue.

    • Republicans push Democrats on abortion limitationsThe abortion debate in the US has evolved, with Republicans seeking to put pressure on Democrats over their stance on limitations, while the White House continues to back Roe v. Wade without specifying further.

The ongoing debate over abortion rights in the United States has shifted, with Republicans aiming to put the focus back on Democrats regarding the limitations they would support. The White House, for its part, has avoided providing specific answers on the issue, instead maintaining their support for Roe v. Wade. This dynamic is likely to continue shaping the conversation around abortion rights in the political sphere. Additionally, sponsor messages from Mint Mobile, Viking, and American Jewish World Service were included in the discussion. Mint Mobile offers premium wireless plans starting at $15 a month, Viking provides European cruises with all-inclusive amenities, and American Jewish World Service supports human rights advocates worldwide.

Biden Struggled, Trump Often Lied, CNN Didn't Fact-Check
President Biden fumbled in the CNN Presidential Debate, offering often rambling answers in a hoarse and quiet voice. Donald Trump, who also rambled, painted a characteristically dark vision of the country and repeatedly lied about his and Biden's records — which went largely unchallenged by CNN's moderators.

Julian Assange, Who Twice Upended Politics, Accepts Plea Deal
Julian Assange, who has long been imprisoned in the United Kingdom, has agreed to plead guilty to a U.S. felony and will return to his native Australia. His WikiLeaks organization's 2010 publication of military secrets helped to reshape public understanding of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The group later released private Democratic National Committee emails that the U.S. government says were obtained via a Russian cyberattack, as part of that government's effort to tilt the 2016 election to Donald Trump.

Key Resources Mentioned in Today's Episode

    Key Takeaways from Today's Episode:

    • Cost
      • Hospitals and health systems prior to COVID-19 have been lumped into the cost villains associated with pharma and insurance companies. Post COVID-19, public perception will be more positive and will value the worth of healthcare institutions.
      • Before COVID-19, hospitals and health systems had to defend the costs of running their operations. Post COVID-19, the question has now changed to why aren’t we supporting them more?
    • Changing cliche branding
      • COVID-19 has brought forward the critical role of hospitals and where they stand in regards to convenience healthcare such as CVS and Walgreens.
      • Before COVID-19 we were trying to differentiate hospitals from their competitors outside of the care they provide through their doctors and nurses. Now, showing the heroism of doctors and front-line still staff has the potential to be a major player in healthcare marketing in the next few months and years. It’s possible that people have the same sentiment for healthcare workers as they did after 9/11 for firemen and the police force.

    Q&A:

Question: As health leaders are highly trusted...How well have the health system leaders done in stepping up to speak and lead in communities?  Do any names come to mind?  I've seen Tina Freese Decker from Spectrum Health in Michigan do this otherwise.....but none others.  Missed opportunity?

Answer: Yes, there has definitely been a missed opportunity in regards to branding, and getting us through this in general. There is a leadership vacuum associated with this crisis. People are really craving leadership and there should be at least one healthcare leader, if not more, in every market.
