Zelenskyy's Pitch for More American Dollars

    en-usDecember 12, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • U.S. Support for Ukraine Wanes Amidst Political Landscape ShiftDespite Ukraine's counteroffensive and Zelensky's plea for more aid, U.S. support wanes due to border policy linkages, skepticism, and questioning oversight.

The support for Ukraine and its president Volodymyr Zelensky in the United States has waned significantly over the past year, with many Republicans in Congress linking aid for Ukraine to border policy changes. This comes as Ukraine has launched a counteroffensive against Russian forces and Zelensky makes a last-ditch effort to secure more weapons and funding from the US. The stakes of the conflict in Ukraine are described as not just about territory or freedom for Ukrainians, but also about defining the world in which future generations will live. The optimism from the initial meetings between Zelensky and American leaders has given way to skepticism and questioning of oversight and the endgame in Ukraine. This shifting political landscape has left Zelensky making an urgent appeal to American leaders to reconsider their commitment to Ukraine and its people.

    • Ukraine's President Seeks More American Funding for War EffortsUkraine's president is urgently seeking additional American funding to continue war efforts against Russia, as current funding runs out and border situation remains unresolved. Policy change at the border is crucial for any deal, and staying competitive in the market is essential for businesses amid technological advancements.

The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, is in Washington D.C. urgently seeking additional American funding to continue the ongoing war efforts against Russia. This aid is crucial for Ukraine as the current funding for the war is running out and the situation at the border remains unresolved. The stalemate in the war in Ukraine could potentially impact the region and beyond, as reported by NPR. Meanwhile, at a recent press conference, Mike Johnson emphasized the importance of real policy change at the border as a necessary condition for any deal moving forward. Companies like PwC are also emphasizing the importance of staying competitive in the market, as technology continues to advance and change the landscape. Wise, the money transfer app, offers a solution for managing international finances, making it easier for individuals and businesses to navigate the complexities of different currencies and exchange rates.

    • Ukraine-Russia War at StalemateDespite regaining half of lost territory, Ukraine can't cut off Russian land bridge, leading to waning support in Congress, but strong political consensus to aid Ukraine and stop Putin, with $4.8B in US aid remaining until next year.

The situation in Ukraine's war against Russia is currently at a stalemate, according to private military officials. While Ukraine has regained about half of the territory lost to Russia, it has not been able to cut off the Russian land bridge. This has led to a loss of support on Capitol Hill, but politically, there is still a strong consensus to help Ukraine and stop Putin. Currently, there is about $4.8 billion left in American aid to Ukraine, which is being doled out until a supplemental bill can be approved next year. The money is being used for various purposes, including weaponry, salaries of Ukrainian forces, and supporting US troops in Europe.

    • Urgent Discussions for Ukrainian Defense Amidst Complex SituationPresident Zelensky seeks defensive missiles to protect Ukraine from Russian attacks and prevent civilian freezing. Military victory unlikely, highlighting need for diplomacy and international support.

The situation in Ukraine is urgent and complex, with billions of dollars at stake. President Zelensky is seeking defensive missiles to protect his country from Russian attacks during the winter, as well as to prevent the freezing of Ukrainian civilians. Discussions with Pentagon officials have centered around a proposed spring offensive, but the Ukrainians have not been able to make significant progress due to minefields and sophisticated Russian defenses. The war in Ukraine cannot be won militarily, according to retired Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley. The use of aircraft, tanks, and mortars to clear minefields and push through enemy defenses has been a challenge for Ukraine. The situation highlights the need for continued international support and diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.

    • Russia-Ukraine conflict: Military solution unlikely, Putin's withdrawal keyThe Russia-Ukraine conflict won't be resolved through military force, and Putin's troop withdrawal is the best solution. Listen to NPR for insights on Black experiences, policy changes, and affordable wireless plans.

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is unlikely to reach a definitive resolution through military means alone. NPR Pentagon correspondent Tom Bowman explained that neither side can fully control the entire territory, and Putin's decision to withdraw troops is the only viable solution. Meanwhile, NPR's Black Stories, Black Truth podcast explores the complex and multifaceted experiences of being Black in America. This collection of stories underscores the significance of Black identity and the importance of acknowledging its diverse dimensions. In the realm of finance, investors should keep an eye on policy changes in Washington that may impact their portfolios. Washington Wise, an original podcast from Charles Schwab, provides insights into these developments. Lastly, Mint Mobile offers an affordable wireless plan starting at $15 a month, which could help consumers navigate the rising costs of inflation.

Supreme Court rules Trump is immune from prosecution for certain official acts

Supreme Court rules Trump is immune from prosecution for certain official acts
On Monday the Supreme Court issued its most anticipated decision of the term — expanding the power of the presidency, and calling into question whether former President Trump will ever face a trial in federal court for allegedly attempting to overturn the 2020 election.

In a 6-to-3 decision, along ideological lines, the Court ruled that presidents have absolute immunity for their core constitutional powers, and are entitled to a presumption of immunity for other official acts.

But the Court ruled that presidents do not have immunity for unofficial acts.

Host Ailsa Chang speaks with constitutional law expert Kim Wehle about the legal issues raised by the ruling and with NPR Senior Political editor and Correspondent Domenico Montanaro about how this decision could impact the election.

Biden tries to reassure voters after a shaky debate performance

Biden tries to reassure voters after a shaky debate performance
The day after a debate in which he faltered many times, President Joe Biden hit the campaign trail to try and reassure supporters that he is still up for the job and capable of beating former President Donald Trump in November.

His performance in the CNN debate on Thursday led many Democrats to panic about his chances of winning reelection. Some commentators who have long supported Biden even called for him to step aside.

NPR's Scott Detrow speaks with NPR Senior White House Correspondent Tamara Keith and Congressional Correspondent Deirdre Walsh about what happens next and whether Biden can quell Democrats' fears.

Gun violence is getting worse. Is this the solution?

Gun violence is getting worse. Is this the solution?
The surgeon general's office has declared gun violence a national public health crisis.

It's the first time the body has ever issued a public health advisory about firearms, and for Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, it's a step in reframing the conversation about death by gunfire.

According to the CDC, more than 48,000 Americans were killed by gun violence in 2021, and over half of those deaths were by suicide.

Biden's executive actions on immigration send mixed signals

Biden's executive actions on immigration send mixed signals
In early June, President Joe Biden severely restricted asylum requests from migrants attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border without authorization.

Two weeks later, the President struck a more welcoming tone, saying he'd protect hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants married to U.S. citizens.

Immigration has become a big issue, for both parties. Policy experts say Biden hopes that in a close election year, these executive actions will sway voters to his side.

But will that strategy pay off and how will it affect migrants?

NPR's Adrian Florido speaks with immigration correspondent Jasmine Garsd who is reporting from the San Diego border with Mexico.
