Part III – Into the Mind of Israel Keyes

    INTRODUCTION

Hey crime enthusiasts, welcome back to another spine-tingling episode of Body of Crime. Today, we're diving deep into the mind of Israel Keyes—a man as perplexing as he is terrifying. A man who didn't just operate in the dark corners of society; he thrived there, leaving an indelible trail of horror that haunts us to this day. You may have heard some people describe him as one of the most meticulous and elusive serial killers of our era. But is that all there is to it?

We're here to ask the tough questions: Was Israel Keyes simply a twisted fanboy of criminal legends who came before him, influenced by an upbringing that can only be described as extreme and reclusive? Or was he a mastermind seeking not just to commit crimes, but to elevate them to a form of dark artistry, all while dodging the authorities?

Hold on to your seats as we navigate the murky psychological waters of a man whose need for control and significance was as unquenchable as it was chilling. We're talking about a guy whose level of planning and calculation would give even the most seasoned detectives pause. Israel Keyes committed acts so heinous that they transcend typical criminal categories. Yet, shockingly, only one of his victims has ever been recovered, with two more deaths to his name confessed but never solved. The unsettling enigma surrounding this man doesn't just lurk; it actively reaches out, daring us to solve it, yet defying our every attempt.

But before we sink further into the dark abyss of his mind and actions, let's hit the rewind button and journey back to the origins of Israel Keyes. How did a man so consumed with maintaining a godlike control over life and death come to be? Buckle up, listeners. You're in for an unsettling, yet compelling, ride as we try to dissect the psyche of a man who defies simple definitions.

    HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Most psychologist would argue that serial killers are not made, they are born.  But to the truth is, in the most formative years of their lives, most serial killers can trace their origin story to some form of trauma or abuse.  Although, if trauma or abuse were the only ingredient necessary to birth a serial killer, we probably would all be serial killers.  Research has shown that there are some genetic traits that can predispose a person to become a serial killer.

In November, 2020, Neuroscientist Jim Fallon, in studying serial killers found that many of them had similar brain scans.  In a blind study, Jim tested 70 brain scans that included people with diagnosed schizophrenia, depression, and some were from convicted killers.  Fallon was able to identify all the brain scans associated with killers.  What Fallon found was that all the killers had some diminished frontal orbital cortex above the eyes, where the circuit for ethics, morality, and conscience lives.  This not only impacts a person’s level of morality, but it also reduces control over impulses.  Ironically, Dr. Fallon had also submitted the brain scans of 10 of his own family members, to include a scan of his own brain.  His brain scan would show signs of diminished frontal orbital cortex activity, just like those of the killers he was studying.  Additionally, his DNA tested for all the markers that are attributable to the genes predisposing someone to aggression and violence.  Simply put, Dr. Fallon had all the markers of a serial killer.  Why wasn’t he a killer, let alone a serial killer?

The missing ingredient turns out to be his childhood.  Dr. Fallon had a happy and secure childhood, full of positive experiences.  This was troubling to the neuroscientist who originally believed the answers could be found solely in the genetics of these monsters.  He was forced to admit he was wrong.

Dr. Fallon provides three key ingredients, that when combined are the perfect recipe for a serial killer.  These include; as discussed, a loss of function in the frontal orbital cortex which often leaves people incapable of making ethical decisions and less capable of controlling impulses.  The second is a genetic cocktail of genes that predisposes someone to violence and aggression, such as the MAOA gene.

The MAOA Gene, or the warrior gene, is linked to aggression and violence with subjects showing greater frequency of increased violence and aggression towards others when compared to individuals with lower levels of the MAOA Gene.

The third ingredient is extreme neglect and abuse as a child.  The younger the abuse, the deeper the impact and psychopathy in the individual.  Someone with this triad of ingredients can cook up the perfect storm for a killer or a serial killer to be born.  And here is where we find young Israel Keyes.

    EARLY LIFE & UPBRINGING

When we look at Israel Keyes, we can assume, given Dr. Fallon’s study, that Keyes’ brain scan would reflect some diminished level of frontal orbital cortex activity indica...

Part II – Who Was Israel Keyes?

    INTRODUCTION

In today's spine-tingling installment, we invite you to step into the enigmatic world of Israel Keyes, a man who thrived in the shadows, leaving a haunting trail of mystery and terror behind. While some have labeled him as one of the most meticulous, intelligent, and elusive serial killers of our time, we dare to ask: was he merely a troubled fanboy, consumed by a sinister obsession, his path shaped by a reclusive and extreme upbringing?

This unsettling journey will unravel the mysterious monster who was Israel Keyes—a man driven by a relentless quest for significance and control. With a chilling level of calculation, he operated on the fringes of society. Only one body has ever been recovered, with two more deaths confessed to but never found, leaving us with an unsettling sense of unease and intrigue that refuses to fade. Get ready to explore the mind of a killer who defies easy explanation, a man who yearned to be perceived as godlike, yet whose actions unveiled a nightmarish reality.

But before we plunge deeper into the abyss of his crimes, let's rewind to the beginnings of Israel Keyes.

    THE BEGINNING

Born under the sign of Capricorn, Israel Keyes made his entrance into this world in the heart of Richmond, Utah, a picturesque town steeped in the history of Mormon pioneers. Founded in 1859 by pioneers under the guidance of Thomas S. Smart, Richmond was an integral part of the grand vision of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) to establish flourishing communities across Utah and the Intermountain West.

Israel, the second of ten Keyes siblings and one of four Keyes sons, spent his early years in this rugged landscape. Richmond's economy revolved around agriculture, with fertile soil in the Cache Valley fostering the growth of wheat, barley, and sugar beets—thanks to ingenious irrigation systems that sustained the town's farming community.

The influence of the LDS Church ran deep in Richmond's development, as was typical in many early Utah settlements. The local congregation, known as a ward, served as the beating heart of community life, while the town itself adhered to the principles of the Church.

Israel's early life was profoundly shaped by his parents' unwavering devotion to the Mormon faith. His father, John Jeffrey Keyes—known as Jeff to those who knew him—had English roots and carried a name imbued with significance, "Yahweh is Gracious." Israel's mother, Heidi Hakansson, hailed from a German background. Both of them were devout members of the Church of Latter-Day Saints, a faith that held its leaders, often regarded as prophets, in the highest esteem—almost akin to divinity itself.

In the initial five years of his life, Israel's family resided in California, attending a particular branch of Mormonism known as the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Torrance. This branch boldly practiced polygamy, defiantly breaking away from the broader LDS community, which had come under pressure to renounce plural marriages.

This faction drew significant media attention due to allegations of rape, unlawful marriages, molestation, and even the marriage of minors. One of the most infamous names associated with this group was Warren Jeffs, who had an astonishing number of wives and children. Disturbing cases within this religious sect raised concerns about potential trafficking of minors. The group's views on women often diverged markedly from mainstream Mormonism, with women sometimes seen as homemakers and child-bearers, and, in certain instances, possibly considered mere property.

This deeply ingrained upbringing within a religious sect rife with controversial practices and beliefs may offer a glimpse into the complex and troubled background of Israel Keyes and his psyche, which we will deconstruct in a future episode. Israel Keyes would be a man who would later become infamous for his chilling and calculated crimes.

At the age of five, Israel's life would take a significant turn as his family, now including his father, mother, older sister America, younger sisters Charity and Sunshine, relocated to Coleville, Washington. Over the years, more siblings would join their ranks—At seven, Keyes welcomed his sister Autumn-Rose and brother Ezra, at ten, his brother Isaac, at twelve, Elijah, and eventually sisters Hosanna and Jubilee Keyes.

But as Israel Keyes grew older, he began to realize that he was not like all the other boys and girls.  He would find himself fascinated with hurting and torturing animals.  His boyhood friends would distance themselves from him.  He thought everyone enjoyed the same sadistic activities and failed to understand the rejection.

    ADOLESCENSE & BECOMING AN ADULT

During his adolescent years, Israel Keyes was surrounded by sisters, in a harsh and strict religion.  He would hone a unique skill - hairdressing. This talent would later earn him accolades as a stylist, a role he would embrace alongside his daughter, his only child....

Part I – The Case Introduction

    INTRODUCTION

Today, we delve into the unsettling world of serial killers, a dark fraternity that constitutes just 1% of all homicides—or so we believe. It raises haunting questions: Is it their intelligence, their skill, the gaps in our investigative systems, or perhaps a sinister blend of all these factors that allows some of them to evade capture?

In the United States alone, more than 3,000 documented cases of serial killers have sent shivers down our spines. Do we unwittingly cultivate them, or are they simply too cunning for our own good? And what about other countries, like the Netherlands with a mere dozen documented cases or England with 166? What sets these numbers in motion, and what lies beneath the surface of such a chilling contrast?

In the year 2012, the nation's tranquility was shattered when law enforcement unmasked a serial killer believed to have terrorized the United States for a horrifying 14 years. His name was Israel Keyes, a seemingly ordinary 34-year-old from Utah—a father, a boyfriend, and the owner of Keyes Construction. But his facade crumbled when he abducted, raped, and murdered 18-year-old barista named Samantha Tessla Koenig, an Alaska native, from her workplace at Coffee Grounds Coffee. This quaint little coffee hut sat innocently in a parking lot on Tudor Road, Anchorage, Alaska, just over four miles from the very residence of Israel Keyes.

Join us as we unravel the chilling story of "The Dark Devotion: Unmasking Israel Keyes."

    SAMANTHA TESSLA KOENIG’S DISAPPEARANCE

Anchorage, Alaska, a city with a storied history that traces its roots to the late 19th century Gold Rush, has evolved into a thriving urban center. It boasts the distinction of being the epicenter for the Alaska Railroad, a vital lifeline that stretches northward to Fairbanks.

Today, Anchorage stands as Alaska's largest city, home to both the formidable United States Fort Richardson Army base and Elmendorf Air Force Base. With its blend of first-class dining, luxury hotels, vibrant entertainment, enriching museums, and outdoor adventures, it's no wonder that tourists flock to this northern gem.

But beneath the city's inviting exterior lies a tale of chilling events that unfolded on February 1, 2012. That evening, in the frigid embrace of a 37-degree Anchorage, 18-year-old Samantha Koenig, was not at work when her boyfriend, Duane Tortolani showed up to pick her up from work at 8:33pm.  The lights were out.  The door was locked, and Samantha was nowhere to be found.  Duane found the coffee shop shrouded in darkness.

The perplexing situation took an ominous turn at 11:24 pm when Duane received a text message from Samantha's phone, accusing him of something sinister. It read, "FU asshole I know what U did I am going to spend a couple of days with friends need time to think plan acting weird let my dad know." Minutes later, at 11:53 pm, another message arrived, simply stating, "F U."

As the night wore on, it became increasingly clear that something had gone terribly wrong. Police began to piece together the horrifying truth—a masked intruder had climbed through the window of the Coffee Hut, threatened Samantha, extinguished the lights, and led her away at what is presumed to be gun point.  At one point during the process, Samantha attempted to run, but the tall athletic stranger tackled her and escorted her away with a warning that this was just a kidnap for ransom.

At approximately 3:00am, Duane noticed a figure wearing a mask rifling through Samantha's vehicle—a vehicle they both shared—at their residence.  The individual had returned to look for Samantha’s debit and identification cards. Unfortunately, they dod not connect Samantha’s disappearance with the break-in.

Samantha's father, James, sensed that all was not well and contacted Duncan, the owner of Common Grounds Coffee, who was away on vacation. Duncan reviewed security footage and, by 12:39 pm, urgently reached out to the Anchorage Police Department, convinced that the footage depicted Samantha's abduction.

    CONNECTING THE DOTS

The search for Samantha began with furious intent.  A reward for her safe return was publicized almost immediately by her father who desperately wanted his daughter returned.  As the search continued with bated breath, a glimmer of hope emerged a little over three weeks after her haunting abduction.

On February 24, 2023, Samantha's boyfriend received a text message from her phone. The message contained cryptic instructions: "Conner Park sign under pic of albert aint she purty." It was a clue, a lifeline, a beacon of possibility.  The family responded instantly.

Upon closer examination, the message revealed a chilling photograph—a gloved hand holding braided hair in the bottom left corner, and in the upper part of the screen, an Anchorage Daily Newspaper from February 13, 2012, prominently displayed. But that wasn't all; concealed on the reverse side of the photograph was a demand for $30,000 in ransom.

    INTRODUCTION

August 7, 2022 - a date that forever changed the landscape of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and left the entire globe in mourning. A date when the world lost a legend, a virtuoso of the mat, at the mere age of 33. Leandro Lo, a name etched in the annals of history, suddenly extinguished. But this isn't just a story about the abrupt end of a champion's life. No, this is a story of pride, power, and a sinister darkness that descended upon that fateful night.

Imagine a scenario so senseless, it defies comprehension. A pathetic display of authority, where a chest-puffing lieutenant of the military police dared to provoke a confrontation while off-duty and armed. But in the end, it was his ego that was subdued, his arrogance that was embarrassed. And in the midst of this twisted power play, a gunshot rang out, leaving a trail of agony and disbelief in its wake.

Leandro Lo, the embodiment of triumph and discipline, lay wounded, his life hanging by a thread, a gunshot wound to the head. And his assailant? A cold-hearted perpetrator who slithered away, leaving behind a scene of devastation that would haunt the world forever.

But friends, this isn't just a tale of tragedy. It's a story of accountability denied, justice twisted, and power exploited. A story where the very emblem of law and protection became a weapon of destruction in the hands of a cowardly snake.

Leandro Lo's legacy was not only stolen, it was tarnished by a system that turned a blind eye, a justice that slapped wrists while his assassin walked free. And with every step the perpetrator took, his violent nature flourished, his badge transformed into a license to impose his will upon anyone unfortunate enough to cross his path.

Join me as we delve deep into the shadows, peeling back the layers of this chilling tale. We'll unravel the web of events that led to that fatal moment, expose the sinister motives that propelled a coward to wield his weapon without hesitation. But remember this, dear listeners, in the heart of even the darkest of tales, there lies a glimmer of hope. The hope that by shedding light on the truth, we can hold those accountable who believed they could escape justice.

So, gather your courage, steel your nerves, and prepare to journey with me into the heart of darkness, as we uncover the raw truth behind the murder of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu's beloved legend, Leandro Lo. Follow us into the chilling depths of a world where no one is a match for the cold, calculating venom of a coward with a gun."

    WHO IS LEANDRO LO:

"Close your eyes for a moment and let me take you on a journey through the life of a true warrior, a man whose name became synonymous with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu greatness , we're stepping into the extraordinary story of Leandro Lo Pereira do Nascimento, or as the world knew him, Leandro Lo.

Born under the sign of Taurus, Leandro's story began in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with a mother named Fatima. Raised as the eldest child and the sole son, he grew up on the gritty streets of the east side of Sao Paulo, where life wasn't always kind. It was within these humble beginnings that Leandro's journey would take a turn no one could have predicted.

At just 14 years old, Leandro Lo's life intersected with destiny. He stepped onto the mats of Projecto Social Lutando Pelo Bem, a program dedicated to offering a brighter path to underprivileged children. Little did he know that this decision, fueled by a desire to better his life, would forge his legacy and reshape the world of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu forever.

Imagine a young boy, driven by passion, walking into the world of combat artistry. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a discipline that the Gracie family had birthed and the U.S. military had adapted for hand-to-hand combat training, became his canvas. Under the guidance of Professor Cicero Costha, Leandro began to mold himself into a force to be reckoned with.

In 2005, with just over a year of training, Leandro's hunger for victory propelled him to seize his first gold at the blue-belt level, an accomplishment that reverberated through the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation. But it was his evolution through the ranks that defined his greatness. A purple belt capturing the CBJJE Brazilian Cup, a brown belt securing the Brazilian Nationals twice, and finally, in 2010, a black belt granted by his Professor and mentor, Cicero Costha.

In 2015 Leandro Lo would found the New School (NS) Brotherhood on the belief that the bonds formed on the mat go beyond Jiu Jitsu and was well on his way to creating the next generation of legends in a school he dedicated himself to much like his original school.

As a black belt, Leandro Lo's ascent was meteoric. He dominated the competition scene, clinching an astounding 36 gold medals and 7 silver medals in major tournaments between 2011 and 2022. 7 (one in the open or absolute class) International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation World Championship titles adorned his name, a testament to his unwavering dedication and unparalleled skills.

Yet, his legacy extended beyond statistics. With 268 victories and 55 submissions, his prowess was undeniable. The Spider Guard and the Toreando Pass became his signature moves, and his name became synonymous with excellence. He would beat other legedns in the sport such as Andre Galvao, Felipe Pena, Gilbert Burns, Gordon Ryan, and many more.

Leandro Lo's most remarkable feat? Five IBJJF World titles across different weight classes - Light, Middle, Medium-Heavy, Heavy, and the Open Division. A feat accomplished by only a select few and a milestone that had eluded the world for two decades in 2020. His smile lit up rooms, his songs united people in chorus, and his dance could lift the spirits of anyone fortunate enough to witness it.

But Leandro Lo was more than a champion on the mats. He possessed a heart as vibrant as his spirit. A desire to give back that radiated from him, touching the lives of those around him. The legacy he built wasn't just about medals and accolades; it was about changing lives, inspiring others, and becoming an icon who transcended the sport. Though the heart of a true legend, whose impact stretched far beyond the mats he graced would be tragically cut short.

Haleigh Anne-Marie Cummings was born August 17th, 2003  a Leo to Ronald Lemyles Cummings and her mother, Crystal Diane Sheffield in Jacksonville, Florida.  Ronald would have been 21 years old at the time of Haleigh’s birth and her mother was only 16.  Although the couple never married, they would have two children together before separating in 2005, with Ronald Cummins Jr being born on February 15, 2005.

Cummings, was from Houston, Texas.  Being raised in one of the many socioeconomic-challenged communities within Houston, Cummings was negatively impacted by limited access to quality education, he lacked economic opportunities and positive community resources and as a result turned to criminal activity at a young age in an attempt to escape his conditions.  Sheffield would have found some source of security in Cummings and supported his criminal behavior and participated in his criminal activities and most likely became addicted to drugs in the process.

Unfortunately, Haleigh was born with Turner Syndrome.  Turner Syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects females and is characterized by the absence or partial absence of one of the two X chromosomes.

The syndrome can lead to a variety of physical and developmental traits, which can vary widely among individuals. Some common features of Turner Syndrome include short stature, a webbed neck, a low hairline at the back of the neck, and a broad chest with widely spaced nipples. Other potential characteristics include heart and kidney abnormalities, reproductive issues (such as infertility), hearing problems, and certain learning disabilities.

Early diagnosis and appropriate medical care are important for managing the symptoms and potential health issues associated with Turner Syndrome. Hormone therapy, growth hormone treatment, and other interventions can help address some of the physical and developmental challenges. Supportive care from medical professionals and a strong social support system can also contribute to an improved quality of life for individuals with Turner Syndrome.

In 2005, while separating from Sheffield, Cummings filed for custody of both Haleigh and her brother, after Sheffield failed to take Haleigh to more than 12 medical appointments that she critically needed to treat her Turner’s Syndrome.  At the time, Sheffield had an injunction against her for domestic violence against a child and admitted to using cocaine.  Full custody of both children was awarded to Cummings when Sheffield failed to show up at the hearing; a notice that Sheffield would later state was mailed to a bohus address.

This would lead to tension between Cummings and Sheffield and on March 13th of 2006, Sheffield would file a protective order against Cummings.  The protective order would be dismissed 20 days later on March 23rd.  Sheffield would continue to battle against addiction and eventually fell behind on court mandated child support payments resulting in an order for “Back Child Support in Arrears” for over $12K.  It was rumored that the stress of the back child support invoked a seizure in Sheffield.

On February 6th of the same year, Joseph “Joe” Edward Overstreet, who was 26, and a cousin of Misty Janette Croslin, Cummings girlfriend, who was 17 at the time, got into a altercation with Cummings over a gun. Overstreet was from Tennessee, but happened to be in Satsuma, Florida at the time.  He would later be implicated by Hank Thomas Croslin, the brother of Misty Croslin and Overstreet’s cousin, who went by the nickname of Tommy.

Tommy Croslin told his grandmother that Overstreet was responsible for taking and murdering Haleigh on the day of her disappearance.  At the time that he snitched, Tommy Croslin was in jail for an unrelated crime.  He would tell authorities that he and Overstreet put Haleigh into a bag and dumped her in the St. Johns River.  Although Overstreet would be questioned multiple times, the police have not charged Overstreet or named him as a suspect.

The next day, February 7th, would be the last day that Crystal would see Haleigh.

On February 9th, three days after the altercation with Joe Overstreet, Haleigh was experiencing an ordinary day for a 5 year old and a Kindergartener.  Cummings and Misty Croslin dropped Haleigh off at Browning Pierce Elementary School in San Mateo at 8:40AM.  They returned to their 3-bedroom double-wide trailer in Hermits Cove and slept until about noon.  At 3:20PM Cummings met Haleigh at the bus stop as she rode home from school before he headed off to work.  Cummings worked for the PDM Bridge located in Palatka, Florida. He arrived 45 minutes early for his shift.

After he left, Haleigh rode her bike with friends and practiced wheelies on the dirt road outside of her home.

At about 5PM, Misty Croslin calls Cummings when the AC Repairman shows up unannounced.  Cummings speaks with him on the phone.  Tommy Croslin and his children happen to be at the home at the time that the AC Repairman shows up, but they all leave around 5:30PM.  She cooks dinner for the kids around 6PM and they spend some time watching television.

At about 7PM Teresa Neves, Haleigh’s paternal Grandmothet stops by the home to drop off some clothes and finds the kids sitting out on the porch having dinner.  When she hugs and kisses the kids goodbye, she doesn’t realize it will be the last time that she will see Haleigh.

Between 8PM and 9:30PM Misty Croslin does some housekeeping and places one of Haleigh’s blankets in the wash.  She puts the kids to bed at their normal

bedtime of 8:15PM.  Haleigh goes to bed wearing a pink Hanna Montana shirt and panties, but the police report states she was wearing tan shorts when she disappeared.

At 8:30PM Misty Croslin and Cummings get into an argument on the phone.  In her anger, she turns her phone off and continues to wash clothes and clean up from the days activities.  At about 10PM Misty Croslin says she physically sees Haleigh in bed and she goes to bed at 10:15PM, laying down in the same room at Haleigh and Ron Jr, where Jr. slept next to her.

There would be speculation as to what t...

Welcome to today’s case file, “Hidden in Plain Sight: The Fight Against Human Trafficking.”

    INTRODUCTION

Today, we're diving into a gripping story that goes beyond the realm of traditional criminal activities. You might have already caught wind of the film "Sound of Freedom," a powerful narrative that unravels the relentless fight against human trafficking. This film brings to life the journey of Tim Ballard, a former U.S. Homeland Security Special Agent who, fueled by a burning desire to make a difference, established Operation Underground Railroad. Through this non-profit organization, Tim and his team are on a mission to take down the harrowing underworld of human trafficking. Their goal? To rescue victims ensnared in this heart-wrenching web and ensure that the perpetrators face justice. To date, they have rescued more than 6,000 and made more than 5,000 arrests.

Operation Underground Railroad, often referred to as OUR, is on the front lines of this battle, orchestrating covert operations to save those caught in the clutches of human trafficking. Their primary focus is on rescuing the most vulnerable of victims – children, who are tragically susceptible to exploitation. By collaborating with law enforcement agencies across borders, OUR aims to dismantle trafficking rings and liberate those who have been cruelly enslaved. This is no small feat; their work involves a blend of intricate investigations, shrewd intelligence gathering, and meticulously coordinated operations.

But this isn't just about crime – it's about confronting a staggering global issue. Human trafficking isn't just a statistic; it's a heart-wrenching reality that affects millions of lives and fattens the wallets of criminal organizations to the tune of 150 billion dollars annually. The concept of humans being reduced to commodities, subject to forced labor and sexual exploitation, is a chilling and deeply intricate problem with 25 million trafficking victims around the world today.

In the shadows of this darkness, it's crucial to spotlight the tireless efforts of organizations like Operation Underground Railroad and individuals like Tim Ballard. They are the unsung heroes combating the scourge of human trafficking day in and day out. Their dedication not only brings hope to survivors but also casts a piercing light on the urgency of this issue. So, join us as we delve into this true crime narrative that transcends the conventional, reminding us that the fight for justice comes in many forms.

    HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Human trafficking, also referred to as trafficking in persons or modern-day slavery, constitutes a grave offense involving the exploitation of individuals for compelled labor or sex. The diversity among trafficking victims defies any single categorization, transcending lines of race, color, nationality, religion, disability, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, education level, or citizenship. This reprehensible crime extends its reach to anyone below 18 engaged in commercial sex, even if seemingly consensual, employing means such as force, deceit, or coercion.

While the characteristics of human trafficking victims are diverse, perpetrators commonly target those who are vulnerable due to poverty, unsafe living conditions, or aspirations for a better life. In the United States, notably at-risk groups encompass American Indian/Alaska Native communities, LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, undocumented immigrants, runaway and homeless youth, and low-income individuals. These victims are ensnared through deceitful promises, compelled to work under inhumane conditions for little or no compensation.

The spectrum of human trafficking perpetrators is equally varied. They can be foreign or U.S. citizens, acquaintances, family members, or even strangers. Dispelling the misconception that traffickers are solely male, cases reveal women can also be involved in this crime. Pimps, gang members, diplomats, business proprietors, labor intermediaries, and owners of farms, factories, and companies can all be perpetrators.

Victims are found across legal and illegal labor sectors, encompassing domains like child and elder care, the drug trade, massage parlors, hair salons, restaurants, hotels, factories, and farms. Some remain hidden within homes, trapped in domestic servitude, while others endure extreme circumstances in plain view—forced into exotic dance clubs, construction, health and beauty services, or eateries, persisting as a dire reality throughout the United States.

Violence such as murder, rape, and other violent crime against Native Americans and Alaska and natives far exceed the national averages. For decades, native American and Alaska native communities have struggled with high rates of assault, abduction, and murder of women. Step into the shadows of mystery and controversy on today's riveting episode. Your curiosity will be pushed to its limits as we dissect the dark enigma surrounding one of the most contentious figures in the gruesome saga of the Henrietta Mass murders journey with us into the heart of darkness, were Jesse Lee McFadden, in an alleged act of savage brutality, extinguished the lives of five children and his wife, Holly TenneT McFadden, an unspeakable carnage that culminated in his own chilling, suicide, scattering bodies across the Erie Silence.

The vast 130 acre expanse, they called home as spring blossomed. In May, it unveiled a grim Tableau, Holly. Her three children and two of their friends were found lifeless on their homestead. Catapulting Holly into the public eye as an apparent victim of Jesse's monstrous rampage. Holly, by all accounts, was the idyllic mother.

Her friendly demeanor warmed her parents and her steadfast presence. At Michael and Tiffany's track meets painted the picture of a supportive, loving parent. She shared a love of arts and crafts.

Holly and Riley kindled their creativity together. Holly wasn't just a homemaker, though. She was an entrepreneur with her sister, Heather Pettigrew. They channeled their passion into a local boutique in Henryetta called The Mystique Emporium, selling their metaphysical products, artful crafts, and all natural skincare products.

Holly to the outside world seemed to be the epitome of the good mom, right? As we peel back the veneer of normalcy, a startling narrative emerged that shook the public's perception. Eerie footage from within our home began to flood Oklahoma news channels revealing shocking scenes of drugs and drug paraphernalia, sex toys, chains, and shackles in the bedrooms, locks in the kitchens.

Suddenly, we all stared into the abyss of possible hidden truths behind their closed doors. This jarring revelation begged the haunting question, was Holly truly a good mom? Our relentless quest to unravel the convoluted case of Jesse Lee McFadden unveiled glaring oversights in his early release from incarceration.

Simultaneously, we started a meticulous dissection of Holly's enigmatic relationship with Jesse. What we unearthed painted a chilling picture, starkly contrasting the narrative offered by Holly and her grieving family.  In this web of intrigue, pressing questions began to bubble up. How did Holly, a married woman from Arkansas find herself entangled with a convicted rapist and level three sex offender from McAllister, Oklahoma?

What drove her to invite such a vile entity into her life and worse into her children's lives, who clearly matched McFadden's preferred age bracket. Our quest led us to unbiasedly, scrutinize Holly's role in the dreadful events. Did she bravely battle against Jesse's horrific final act, attempting to shield her children and their friends, or did she have a darker role in the unfolding tragedy?

Unfortunately, those who hold the answers are forever silenced, leaving us a delve into the picture painted by the crime scene, and all of the evidence.  We speculate, we deduce, and we question based on Holly's enigmatic narrative. Was Holly truly the good mom or was she something more sinister? Join us as we delve into these questions and more in today's gripping episode.

So Holly's story starts in 1988. She was born on February 28th. Holly Tonoutte Limon Mayo, a Pisces, to both Michael Anthony Mayo, who was 22 at the time, and Jeanette Louise Pepper, who was 24 in El Paso, Texas.  At this point in time, McFadden would've been about four and a half years old.

Were they associated with the military in any kind of way back then?

Jeanette's father died in El Paso, Texas, and something tells me that that's probably where he got outta the military. I'm not positive, but he was in the military. Okay, that would be my guess. We actually have a, a photo of one of the houses that they lived in, and so if you guys end up joining us for the live, you'll get to see that.

So in 1988, in that same year, at the time that Holly was born, they were not married. Michael and Jeanette were not married. So they got married on August 2nd of that year. She was 24, a couple years older than Michael. And, um, they married in El Paso. And Holly was about six months at that point in time.

Six, six months old. Michael had been previously married, and so Holly's older brother doesn't have the same mom as Holly. So her older brother has a different mother. What's his name? Timothy. Timothy what? Mayo. Oh, Timothy, mit, Mayo. Yeah. Okay. Holly grew up there in El Paso, Texas, at least as a young child.

There is record of both Michael and Jeanette kind of moving around a lot. So there's a pretty good possibility that Holly also moved around a lot with her brother, and then later her sister was a little bit younger than her in 1996. And the reason that we're gonna bring this up is because this has come up throughout the case.

After everything had come out. But in 1996 on October 11th, Brandi Michelle Baker, who is Michael Mayo's. So Holly's dad's half-sister. She was 14 at the time. Holly would've been about, um, eight years old. This is her paternal aunt, married Jason Philip Baker, who was 22 at the time. So Brandy was 14. This is Holly's aunt and Jason Philip Baker married her at the age of 22.

Holly's paternal grandfather and paternal step-grandmother were required due to her age to authorize the marriage. By signing for it. Jason Philip Baker would later be accused of molesting his daughters and fleeing the country. When he voiced his outrage over Holly's life, following the murders, he had to flee the country.

This is the narrative that, you know, the Mayo family has shared. And this came out when he started going to some of the group pages for the murders that occurred in Henrietta. So there's a number of group pages on Facebook where different people have shared different things about the case and whatnot.

And he started jumping on some of the pages and was talking about his knowledge of Holly, like how he married her aunt, when, you know, when Holly was young, about eight years old. And he talked about what he knew about Holly at that point in time, and then how he saw her later when, um, she had met Riley and Michael's father.

And so he just tried to provide a little bit of kind of backstory, but from the sounds of it, he honestly wasn't really present and honestly probably didn't know that much. But the family obviously got very upset when they saw the things that he was saying because he was more on the, um, side of. There's no way that Holly could have not known.

So he had a different stance than the rest of the family. Yeah. What would you expect from a guy who marries a 14 year old at 22, other than to molest other children? That already is, is a problem. 14 and 22 is a big age difference. It is a big age difference. It's also bothersome to me that you would sign for your 14 year old to...

As we delve into the dark depths of this horrifying case of the Henrietta Mass murders. Our focus is on the true monster, a man whose name send shivers down the spines of those who know his heinous deeds. Jesse Lee McFadden. Our story unfolds in the heart of an American city, steeped in history where tells of cowboys and pioneers resonate throughout the streets.

But beneath the nostalgic facade lies a sinister presence that emerges from the shadows. Welcome to Henrietta, a small town nestled in Ogee County, Oklahoma, with a population just over 5,600. This state, often referred to as the Bible Belt, is unfortunately notorious for being one of the largest strongholds of the Ku Klux Klan, or K K K.

Oklahoma ranked a dismal 43rd out of the 50 states in terms of livability. Paints a troubling picture with statistics such as 48th and healthcare and education, a disheartening tie for first place in unemployment, and a concerning 43rd in crime and corrections. Despite ranking fourth in incarceration rates, it holds distressing titles of a ninth in rape and 12th in violent crime.

Moreover, allegations of corruption plague both the city and county as Oklahoma was recently ranked as the 11th most corrupt state. It seems that this tumultuous environment provides a fertile breeding ground for the likes of Jesse Lee McFadden. Prepare yourselves as we journey into the twisted psyche of our central figure.

McFadden is not only a murderer, but also a registered sex offender and rapist. Despite a laundry list of red flags and his behavior encounters with law enforcement and entanglements with the legal system, the state of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Department of Corrections allowed him to step out of the prison walls, instilling in him a sense of untouchability and even empowerment.

Unsurprisingly, McFadden's behavior remained unchanged, if not more insidious, even during his time behind bars. And then a shocking turn of events, a murder suicide that claimed the lives of five innocent children. As the state deflects blame, citing the lack of support and an overburdened justice system, a dark cloud of corruption hovers over the investigation, leaving the survivors and victims families to shoulder the responsibilities that should rightfully belong to state officials, law enforcement, and legislators.

Join us as we deep dive the chilling details of this homegrown Oklahoma monster, Jesse Lee McFadden.

As we continue our dissent into the depths of this chilling narrative, we now shift our focus to the life of the monster himself. Jesse Lee McFadden, born into a world cloaked in secrecy and shadows, Jesse emerged under the stage of Wichita, Kansas. A city whose foundation rested on the remnants of a Native American village, a tapestry woven with trade and promise.

It was on that fateful day, August 24th, 1983, that a Virgo came into existence. Did, did the world know of the sinister destiny that lay in wait for this troubled soul raised by his young mother, LaDonna Jean McFadden? In the absence of a father figure whose identity remained shrouded in mystery, Jesse's path would become entangled with dark recesses of human nature.

A legacy was set in motion, one that would forever haunt the annals of true crime history. As we delve deeper into the intricate web of the McFadden family, we uncovered their journey from Wichita, Kansas to McAllister Oklahoma, a town steep in the ancestral heritage of the McFadden lineage, nestled within the boundaries of Pittsburgh County.

It was here at 90 41 Redbird Drive and LaDonna sought a sense of permanence, a place to call home. However, this dwelling often deemed unsuitable or raising of family would become the backdrop of McFadden's upbringing, shaping the course of his and his brother's. Cody McFadden's lives you will learn about McFadden, a true monster that haunted the lives of many.

We'll explore the chilling psychology behind his crimes and unravel the intricate web of forensic connections that built his criminal profile. We'll delve into the disturbing motivations behind sexual assault and murder, examining the patterns of behavior that define a monster. Discover the significance of criminal signatures and the clues they leave behind.

Learn unique insights into the criminal mind as we analyze the organization and methodology employed by McFadden. Get ready for a mind-bending exploration to the depths of human darkness that will leave you questioning what truly makes a monster. This is the story of a monster, a convicted rapist, a registered sex offender, and a predator haunted and hunted against expecting.

Let's begin by unmasking our monster.

What do we know about McFadden and his early childhood? We know that when, um, shortly after McFadden was born that his mom moved from Wichita, Kansas, which is where a majority of their family was. Well, I say a majority. They actually had a large portion of family in both the Kansas area and also in Oklahoma.

So not too long after he was born, they moved from Wichita to Oklahoma and they have some pretty big lineage in, in both areas. So, When LaDonna moved to McAllister, she moved to the address that sexual predator is someone who seeks sexual contact with others. If you have the opportunity to look at pictures of that address, I encourage you, because the visual just kind of, and actually it's the picture on the cover of our episode that's important.

You can even look at that. He was raised in a place where a lot of people feel like it signs sexual predator for raising a child. Important cause you'll see as we, and what do we know about what LaDonna was doing at that age, we see where he exhibited some suicide. How was she making money of being a sexual predator?

I don't know how she was making money, but she was a single parent, so she was having to work as a single parent, which isn't easy. The reason why I ask that question is because she makes a comment about McFadden's dad and when Mc McFadden asked her about his father, and she says that she met him on a corner of what he told me.

I was always under the impression that he never knew his father. He was never around and also didn't know who he was. I remember at one point being curious about, he never even heard from in his life. I know he had asked Lana some question.

As far as he told me, the only information he ever knew is that he was much older than she was at the time. How did he explain to you that he met her? Uh, when I had asked questions, I don't know if it was them next weekend or at some point he had a visit in prison with his mom. She came to visit him and he asked her how they met, and he did give me ages.

I'm not sure if I remember exactly how old she said that she was, and he was, but I guess her first reaction was that she mocked about it and said that she met him on the corner.

But Jessie, and this is in a letter, this is how he communicated this to me. So, you know, I just read this piece of paper, but then he goes on to say, oh, and then she told me about the story and about how they met ...

So in 2017, right before Nani took the case as the DA for Kaitlyn Babs case and for the case against McFadden, a different DA had the case, and rather he was permanently assigned or just temporarily until Nani took it. He had gone in for one of the initial hearings. His name is DA Ryan Ferguson, and that was on sometime in November, I believe.

But shortly before Nani took over and based on whatever occurred there, he was removed and he also left the DA's office. And I don't know if he left the DA's office by choice or if he was made to leave, but he's the only person who's come forward, aside from Larry Edwards, who's the current elected DA there in Muskogee, and commented on the case.

And he highlighted the fact that within a month of having anything to do with McFadden's case, he was gone. So I. Thought that was interesting. Yeah, that is pretty interesting. So then in 2018 they had the highest incarceration rate in the US In January on the 17th, LaDonna Jean McFadden texts Caitlyn Lindsay bbb, who's 18 at the time saying O M G.

I'm so sorry. I don't even know what to say. I will make sure he quits bothering you like that. All that I can, what was that in response to? He had been sending Kaitlyn messages, like threatening her and calling her, trying to get her to drop the case. You know, he wanted the case to go away. Yeah. And how did LaDonna find out about that?

Yeah, because she regularly talked to McFadden, so it was almost like they were tag teaming. So the next day on January 18th, LaDonna texts Caitlyn and says, not blaming you just told him it was not a good relationship if one of you is doing something wrong. Um, he asked if you can talk to him at least one time.

Now, this message was written because Kaitlyn wasn't wanting to talk to McFadden and she had been letting him know that. And when she would let him know that he would give her a hard time as to why they should talk and different things of that nature. And as they're going back and forth, you know, he's speaking to his mom very regularly and then his mom is turning around and relaying things to Caitlyn of what she believes about what's happening and whether or not she thinks they should talk or what McFadden's saying.

So no matter what Caitlyn does, she can't keep McFadden away from her because she's being double teamed. Yeah. By LaDonna and by Jessie. Right. Then on January 30th, a non-issue, preliminary hearing is conducted, uh, with his attorney and the judge. So this is something that takes place. Basically, we're not everybody's involved.

Then on February 15th, LaDonna texts Caitlyn again. So this time she's saying, let me think on it a minute about contacting them. I haven't spoke to him since the weekend. He started talking some crap that I told him I didn't want to hear, so I hung up on him not trying to get in your business, but he said, you won't tell him how you feel or whatever.

It just drives me nuts that she's as involved as she is and at the consistency that she is. It's not even like something significant happened and she just really felt compelled to get involved, but she's constantly doing it. Yeah, I don't understand how the DA didn't see that as tampering. Was the da aware of, of these communications from LaDonna?

I'm pretty sure, because, you know, communication was going back and forth about, about the threatening letters with between McFadden and see, and part of this is the matter of fact, prior to this conversation, one of the things that had occurred was that McFadden wouldn't leave her alone. Yeah. And he was calling her on the phone and threatening her and harassing her in.

Right. Yeah. But, but couldn't, couldn't you get a, a restraining order, a no contact order? Or should the DA have recommended any of those things? They told her to contact Ooc and that Ooc could do some kind of blocking in their system to block Caitlyn's number from being called. But that never took place.

That never happened. So she continued to be contacted by him. I feel like there's another failure there. Oh, absolutely. So many, so many failures. So then on March 29th, LaDonna contacts Caitlin, who's 18 at this point, and this is what she tells her. Now, remember Baker, we were talking about Baker. She says, Hey.

And the attorney said if your grandparents did not show up, there'd be a good chance that they would drop the case and they haven't been subpoenaed to appear. How does she know that they haven't been subpoenaed? Right. Who's telling her, Hey, the grandparents haven't been subpoenaed. So to me, that tells me you're already planning on, oh, we got the subpoenas too late, or the subpoenas were sent out too late.

So let's go ahead and try to get a continuance based on that. Yeah. Like there's a method to that madness there. Mm-hmm. What else does she say? So she says, I just wish that you'd help out this one last time. I would be grateful for any way you could help. Sorry for all I've asked, but I'm just ready to have Jesse home and it would tear me up to have him get more time.

Another manipulation from LaDonna. Absolutely. It's disgusting. It is disgusting. You know, one of the things that Caitlyn shared with me is that she's gotten a lot of flack from people. Talking to McFadden and saying things like, you know, like almost like, Hey, you're not a dummy, even though you were 15, like you knew what you were doing or you knew what was happening.

And what people don't understand is that not only are adults manipulated, men are manipulated. So this girl's being manipulated and not just by him, she's being manipulated by his mother. Yeah. At the same time. So my question is, can she be charged with anything? I hope so. I truly hope so. And put her ass in jail.

So then on April 4th, Don f Baker. Now mind you, this was March 29th. March 29th, and the subpoena hasn't gone out March 29th and Ladonna's reaching out to Caitlyn and Caitlyn isn't biting. And then guess what happens? Less than a week later on April 4th, Don F Baker files a motion for continuance. And guess what his reason is?

He's gonna be outta state. So he asked for a delay and the delay is a 76. Day delay. Wow. That's the first motion for continuance that he files. So then on April 11th, they receive a subpoena. So basically when, you know, when you file a continuance, it's accepted and they push it through. Then they go through the whole process of doing the subpoena and the habeas corpus again for the witnesses, and then whoever the, you know, the inmate is to notify them of the next hearing.

So that's what takes place on the 11th, a subpoena and a habeas corpus. Then on April 17th, Holly, who's 30 at the time, and Joseph or Joe Emory guess have a vehicle loan origination or UCC initiation together in Westville, Oklahoma with People's Bank. Why do we throw that in there? Why is that important?

That's important because this lets us know that during this time, not only is Holly married, but they have some financial...

Henryetta Mass Murders - Updated Timeline - Part 1

Welcome to the Henrietta Mass Murders, the updated timeline. Today we revisit the Henrietta Mass murders timeline. Since the last time, we have received new updates from survivors, crystal Strong and Caitlyn Bab, and our investigations have revealed Jesse McFadden's father, potentially, potentially.

75 year old male, silver Hollow Road between Lane Road and Patch Road. Repeating. Welcome to Body of Crime, your Go-to True Crime podcast where we plunge headfirst into the gripping world of criminal mysteries. Join your host, Jose Medina, crystal Garcia, and Alicia Anaya as we deliver the full stories immersing you in the heart of each case with spine chilling cases, in-depth analysis, captivating interviews, and comprehensive examination of the evidence.

Embark on a thrilling journey with us as we explore bone chilling cases from around the globe. Whether you're a. Season, true crime enthusiast or a fresh face in the genre, we guarantee to keep you on the edge of your seat. So put on your detective hat, grab your notepad, and get ready to dive into the thrilling world of body of crime.

On May 1st, 2023, there were seven bodies that were found at the McFadden residence in Henrietta, Oklahoma. Those seven bodies included Jesse McFadden, Holly TenneT, l McFadden, his wife, her three children, Riley, Elizabeth Allen, Michael, James Mayo, Tiffany Dogue, and then two friends who came to sleepover with Tiffany.

Ivy, Berlin, Webster and Brittany Cheyenne Brewer. This was pretty crazy guys. And the reason is this, just to give you kind of a quick recap, and that's that what started out as a slumber party and two girls being reported missing ended in just an atrocious working of the case from beginning to end, which hasn't ended by far because when they were found it was a murder suicide.

Jesse had killed everybody and then shot himself in the mouth. Um, they were all shot in the head. Um, if you want some of those details, we provide those details in the Slumber Party Massacre podcast that we did, so you guys can go check that out. Um, we won't be going over all those details today. That's just really just gonna be the timeline.

Now, since then, what has come out and what has come to light since the release of our last post on that particular case is the autopsies came back. We're still digging into the autopsies just because there's some fishiness going on in terms of time of death, in terms of, uh, toxicology reports that came back clearing everyone of mostly everything.

I'm saying that pretty much everyone was, was clean, with the exception of, of one or two people. But we're just continuing to dig. And so this new updated timeline is really to drive additional content around the history of this case from, from beginning to end. What's new, crystal? Yeah, what's new? There's a lot of new stuff, so, which is actually kind of requiring us to kind of go back through everything.

So if you didn't get a chance to catch from the last timeline that we did, we might have gone into some details a little bit more in that one. I'll at least say that, and we're not gonna get into the nitty gritty in this one other than where the updates are. I'm gonna start off in 1983. 1983. I was 11 years old.

I was one. So in 1983, between 83 and about January, 2004, LaDonna Jean McFadden, who's Jesse's mother, she moved to Oklahoma to the address that we know as 90 41 Redbird Drive in McAllister, Oklahoma. If you've heard anybody speak about where he grew up, where they say he had dirt floors, he lived in a trash trailer.

That's this address. If you were to pull it up online, it's pretty sad what you see. August 23rd, Floyd Gene McFadden, who is McFadden's maternal grandfather, changes the resident agent on his business account in Wichita, Kansas. He had a company called Wichita Fence Company. A lot of records are missing, so we can't confirm whether there was a sell of shares or what occurred there.

But the change occurs only within a day of McFadden's birth. 1983, Jesse Lee McFadden. A Virgo is born to LaDonna Jean McFadden at the age of 18. She would've been pregnant at 17. Up until now, we were unable to find his birth certificate. We were unable to find any relationship that LaDonna McFadden had that would've indicated a possible father.

And there was actually some speculation that possibly his maternal grandfather was actually his father. One of the things that McFadden had mentioned to Kaitlyn Bab, who was the victim in the pending case when he was released from prison, is that she knew that he had mentioned that the father was much older, but from all indications he didn't know who his father was.

So we did a lot of digging and we believe that we have found his father. And they're a spitting image of each other. Truthfully, it's uh, shocking. It's very shocking. We believe his name is Burl Alton Blair, he would've been 44 when McFadden was born, and LaDonna would've been 18 years old, a 27 year difference.

So what do we know about Alton Blair, if that is Jesse McFadden's dad, like what do we know about him? Who is this guy, this mysterious guy? Why is he important in this situation, in this conversation? So for starters, all indications lead to the fact that him and LaDonna are currently married. She just didn't take his last name.

The last record that we have is dated August 1st, 2021, and they're listed as husband and wife, and it was through a sale of property. Why this is so important and so important to the case is that we've been speculating that there's been some corruption within the justice system somehow. Some way that allowed for McFadden to be released in the manner that he was and.

To have ended up in this tragic event where these children should not have lost their lives. And this guy is very well connected and he has a lot of money and he could have applied a lot of pressure. He could have paid a lot of people off. And so that is why this man is very important to this case. I know there's been a lot of questions and a lot of speculation in terms of Jesse's legal team and who he had as an attorneys and the fact that he'd been in jail since he was 19.

He was indigent when he went to jail. He got a public defender when he went to prison. So who was paying for these lawyers and who was paying for all these uh, extensions for like over six years of paying for these lawyers to continue to kick the can down the road? Who was footing this bill? Cuz it definitely wasn't LaDonna McFadden.

So just to give you guys some background on who we've already spoken with concerning this case, we've already done a podcast with McFadden's First Survivor, crystal D Strong. And we are prepping to do a podcast with his second survivor, Caitlin l Bab. Can you tell me a little bit about this guy? This, uh, this Alton, this, this Alton Blair?

What is it that we know about him? Like you said, he was 44 when he would've gotten LaDonna pregnant with Jesse. Yes. So right now he's in his eighties. He owns more than 400 restaurants across the us. He definitely would be able to pull some strings and pay some people off. Absolutely. For sure. His business is called Donut Palace, and there are a lot of them.

He also sells kitchen equipment, that kind of stuff, and does a number of other different things. So he may not be a Jeff Bezos, but he's up there. He's not a small fish in this case for sure. I know that a lot of people have been really trying to connect dots where it came to pageant thinking that somehow pageant the pageant family was connected somehow some way.

And we're very big on releasing things that we've vetted and we don't wanna smear anybody's name, who obviously, regardless of their indiscretions aren't truly part of this case. And as of today, we have not found any connections with the pageants, and truthfully, in this sc...
