Caylee Marie Anthony Part 2: Missing

Caylee Marie Anthony Part 2: Missing
In this episode we’ll be going through the time period after Casey’s arrest on July 16th and before her arraignment on October 14th. We’ll also be hearing her jail house visits, the Timer55 Theory, George and Cindy’s media interviews and media appearances as well as talking about missing children’s cases and how they play out in the media, and meeting a new character of this story Nancy Grace. When we last left off it was July 17th and Casey was booked into The Orange County Jail. She’d been arrested less than 24 hours after her mother Cindy had made three 911 calls, the last one frantically explaining “my granddaughter has been taken she’s been missing for a month, my daughter admitted to me she’s been missing for a month I just found my daughter But I can’t find my granddaughter. I found my daughters car today and it smells like there’s been a dead body in the damn car….This is a three year old little girl… I need to find her,” when police arrived Casey explained to them, she had left Caylee with her longterm nanny Zanny 31 days ago at Sawgrass aparmtments, she met Zanny through co-workers and her closest friends at Universal Studios where she’d worked for four years, when the detectives went to Sawgrass Apartment unit 210 had been empty for months; when Casey led detectives to her office at Universal Studios where she worked as a party planner they hit a literal dead end and told detectives “I don’t really work here,” she’s interrogated and placed under arrest. She gets her one jailhouse phone call asking for her boyfriend’s number, the Anthony’s do not realize this will later be played on the news, and she aquires Jose Baez as her attorney. Jose Baez writes in his book that one of the State’s biggest mistakes was how quickly Casey was arrested, because once she was lawyered up, that was that she was not talking— but both the prosecutor Jeff Ashton and Jose Baez do offer a reason that made sense to them on the swiftness of the arrest, and that reason was a woman named Melinda Duckett. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/broadsnextdoor/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/broadsnextdoor/support

The Radium Girls and The Mysterious Death of Karen Silkwood

The Radium Girls and The Mysterious Death of Karen Silkwood
Today we’re talking about the Radium Girls and the Unsolved Death of Karen Silkwood. Normally, we’d never start any story reflecting on the dead with “she lit up a room,” but the radium girls aren’t really a story as much as they are a lesson, and when we say they lit up a room we mean it in a literal sense. Not only did radium girls make three times more money than the average factory worker but when they left the studio where they painted watch dials all day, they actually glowed. Radium was safe, everyone knew that. Not only safe but kind of sexy, kind of glamorous. With radium spas and facial potions, you couldn’t open up a paper without seeing the benefits of radium. And they believed in these benefits, until you know, their bones started falling out. How did the Radium Girls find justice? We will also tell you the story of Karen Silkwood, a worker at Kerr-Mcgee Plutonium factory in the 1970s, who became a whistleblower and safety activist, after witnessing her coworkers fall ill due to plutonium exposure. After joining the Union, and speaking out about her concerns, Karen became exposed herself. A week later she died. We will unpack the mysterious circumstances surrounding her death, and the Academy Award nominated film, starring Meryl Steep, Kurt Russell, and Cher, inspired by her life. Caylee Marie Anthony Part 1: The 31 Days

Caylee Marie Anthony Part 1: The 31 Days
We’re doing the ultimate deep dive on Caylee Anthony & her mom Casey. Join us as we try and gain a broader understanding of how any of this happened. This is part one of a four part series. The Thirty-One days are often reduced to a series of soundbites but we’re going to tell you about each day. In this episode we’ll be looking at the disappearance of Caylee Anthony starting with the events of June 16th. We’ll go over Casey’s phone and computer records as well as testimony from all her friends and family members to form a timeline of what was going on each day and try and give this timeline in the most unbiased way possible while we lay down the ground work for our other episodes. From Casey’s job at Universal Studios, her best friend and co-worker Juliet Lewis, her ex co-worker current lover and Zanny’s ex-boyfriend Jeffrey Hopkins. The timeline Casey gives Cindy. The discovery of Casey’s car abandoned in an Amscot parking lot. The smell. A computer search for full proof suffocation. The three 911 calls Cindy makes. The people Casey spent her time with from boyfriend Tony Lazzaro and what they rented at Blockbuster the night Caylee disappeared, to best friend Amy Hazinga and all those trips to Target. Fusion Ultra Lounge infamous hot body contest photos. Sawgrass Apartments and investigators desperate attempts to find Zanny the Nanny. Ending with Casey’s arrest and her first phone call home. In Part 2 we will explore the media’s influence on the case, Jose Baez and Casey’s team building their drowning defense and setting their sights on George Anthony while Jeff Ashton and the prosecution start building their case against Casey with chloroform and the car smell, Casey’s brief release from prison, Nancy Grace and the nightly news… all while examining the psychology of lying and why we are so fascinated by it. In Part 3 we will focus on the trial and Part 4 will be about the aftermath and all the documentaries that followed You can find us on social media @broadsnextdoor More content on Patreon!
