    #287 - What's The Romance With Radio?

    #287 - What's The Romance With Radio?

On this week’s episode, we have a discussion with Johnny Dwinell regarding what it is that drives artists to hear their songs on radio… and is it worth the cost?

Today’s terrestrial radio is attempting to figure out what their future is in the overall spectrum of things. At the same time, the record business is looking to see what their next step might be.Currently they’re going to go with the devil they know (the current format and programming), yet knowing that it’s not working, and not try the devil they don’t know, which is streaming platforms.

At the same time, you as the independent artist need to know your customer listening base. Hollywood has figured it out, by knowing who their customer is has become the new norm in television. Why hasn’t the record business, or the music industry as a whole caught up to that paradigm shift?

In order to even get the attention of radio these days, you need the following:

    1. You Need Spins to achieve market penetration

    2. You need 40 to 70 spins in each market to achieve that penetration

    3. You need to be in for the long haul (6 to 9 months)

    4. Those spins have to happen during peak listening hours

    5. The radio station has to have sufficient listenership

While all this is going on, you as the artist need to understand that in the record label’s eyes, you’re a small business. These days, record companies are in the business of acquiring small businesses. They just don’t know how to make that profitable for them.

Few people have experienced the music business from as many different angles as Johnny Dwinell. An expert in the fields of digital marketing and social media growth and engagement, Johnny has worked with some of music’s most notable names, produced albums, co-founded a well-known music business podcast and started a Nashville-based artist development company. Johnny co-founded Daredevil Production in 2012 with a focus on breaking artists in the digital world. Over the years, he has headed up digital marketing for cruises featuring popular artists like Tracy Lawrence, Ty Herndon, Jamie O’Neal and Andy Griggs. John’s marketing expertise has also been used to sell out shows for country music legends T.G. Sheppard, Ronnie McDowell, and BJ Thomas.

#286 - The Gatekeeper Has Left The Building

Originally a songwriter from Arkansas, Randy Barber moved to Nashville to try his hand at writing hits with some of the best on Music Row. He soon discovered that the bar for great material was set high, and he had to make the decision to either return home, or figure out a way to become a better writer.

Soon enough, Randy discovered he had other talents more acclimated for behind the scenes of the music business, and formed his company, Bar Frog Music. Part of his company’s endeavors is focusing on what can be considered the complicated issue of music publishing.

On this episode, we talk about royalties, how radio has a play in that stake (or doesn’t), and how independent artists have opportunities to succeed, where previously those opportunities were not available to them. We just have to remember where terrestrial radio equated to one to many, social media, and streaming platforms are one to one, which can level the playing field for today’s independent artist.

    #285 - Questions and Answers

Some weeks back, we posted the question to our followers on Facebook and Linkedin asking for topics of discussion you’d like for us to cover on an upcoming episode of “The Business Side of Music” podcast. On this special episode, we cover several of those questions submitted by our listeners. Joining us in the studio is Vinny Ribas, who is the founder of “Indie Connect”, along with his new educational program “Cartne” who helps provide the answers, and some insight in the process.

We cover such things as to whether Apple Podcasts or Spotify is a better platform. Will the NFT format take off like vinyl, CD’s, and cassettes before. How can emerging artists navigate the challenges of self-promotion and building a brand. When should you introduce children to an instrument. How can an artist improve their earnings from recorded music, what makes a song a hit, and so many other questions.

#284 - How A.I. Can Help Promote Your Music

#284 - How A.I. Can Help Promote Your Music

The buzzword these days is AI. "Artificial Intelligence". It’s a scary topic of discussion if we allow it to be. But there are good opportinities to use AI, and Paul Loeb who is the founder and CEO of DropTrack has found a way to have it work in the music industry for independent artists.

When Paul started a record label several years ago, he experienced the pains of music promotion, which led him to create DropTrack. What he discovered along the way, is there are more opportunities than ever for musicians, but it's hard to discover the right ones and cut through the noise of the competition. What he did was create DropTrack, which uses AI to help artists save time promoting their music, so they can focus on what they do best. From promoting your music to online streaming services, to writing a press release using their AI PR Agent, which can write a press release for your music simply by uploading the song.

The company also provides a service called “Done For You”, wherein Drop Track acts as your agent, where they help in promoting the music, do a personalized outreach to applicable influencers, along with providing reports on who is listening to your music.

DropTrack's mission is to connect musicians around the world with their best opportunities for success.

Paul Loeb is a seasoned executive in the music and technology industries, best known as the Founder and CEO of DropTrack, a cutting-edge AI-powered music promotion platform. With over two decades of experience, Loeb's journey in the music industry has been marked by his passion for music, technical expertise, and a relentless drive to innovate.

#282 - It's More Than Just Background Music

#282 - It's More Than Just Background Music

Did you know that 70% to 75% of businesses today don’t know that they’re not supposed to be using consumer services such as Pandora or Spotify to play music in their business establishments? That’s over four million businesses in the United States alone. Having a license from just ASCAP, BMI, GMR or SESAC will not cover all the songs on their playlists. There has to be a more inclusive and overall encompassing way to go about ensuring that the music you’re playing in your restaurant or store is legally covered. Artists, along with rights holders of music are leaving 5 to 10 times of what they would earn in a traditional streaming service by not ensuring that they’re getting paid for their music being played in a commercial environment.

There has to be a way to educate not only the businesses, but also the rights owners of the music for such endeavors. Enter Lisa Farris.

Lisa Farris is the CMO of the company “Soundtrack Your Brand”, which is a B2B Company based out of Stockholm Sweden, providing . She is a graduate of Rutgers University, a former employee of the Recording Academy, Music Marketing Network, and Universal Music Group. Sountrack Your Brand provides over 90 million tracks, building playlists designed for the business, based on the demographics of your customers.

#281 - The Fame Will Come and Go But You Can Always Write

#281 - The Fame Will Come and Go But You Can Always Write

Hailing from the foothills of the North Georgia Appalachian Mountains, Charlsey Etheridge's roots in Americana Music run deep. There she learned to sing harmony around her grandmother's piano after church on Sundays and taught herself guitar chords from her mother’s old Emmylou Harris songbook. She wrote her first song at the young age of 7 while riding through the woods in her step-father’s old army jeep.

After moving to Nashville in 2003, Charlsey was immersed into the Nashville songwriting culture, working alongside such music industry veterans as Harley Allen and Steve Wariner. “Even though Harley is no longer with us, I am often reminded of an invaluable piece of advice he left me,” Etheridge reflects. “He said, ‘just remember... fame will come and go... but you can ALWAYS write.’ As a young 23 year old, I didn’t think much of that statement at the time, but through the years, his words resonate with me more and more.”

In 2013, Etheridge released her first full-length studio album, appropriately titled, Memories of Mine. The critically acclaimed record intimately paid homage to the sounds of her youth, exploring the Bluegrass, Gospel, and old Folk songs her grandmother used to sing to her. Memories received stellar reviews in such bluegrass and roots music publications as No Depression and The Bluegrass Situation. The 2013 album set the stage for Charlsey’s future success in Americana and Roots music.

In 2021, Etheridge collaborated with legendary guitarist Jack Pearson (of Allmon Brothers Band fame) to release a previously recorded, newly mastered five-song EP, An Acoustic Christmas with Charlsey and Jack. The holiday album blends Jack’s lyrical musicality and lightning-precise fingerwork and with Charlsey’s butter-smooth voice in a not-to-be-forgotten compilation of holiday favorites.

Now, nearly 8 years after her first studio album, Charlsey is releasing a compilation of original music, entitled Scars of Mine. She has joined forces with MuzikMafia veteran, Jerry Navarro (Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson), who is also the founder of the new Indy label, The Frequency Spot (of which Etheridge is also an active artist). Joining Charlsey in this collaboration are band members Marcus Finnie (Lady A, Keb Mo, Taj Mahal), Walt Scott, Chris Walters (Barbara Mandrell), and Pat Bergeson (Suzy Bogguss, Lyle Lovett, Chet Atkins). The project is co-produced by sought after guitarist and musician, Pat Bergeson. Scars of Mine is slated for release in 2023.

    #280 - Develop Something Unique

    #280 - Develop Something Unique

“I Can Lead An Artist Into the Studio, But I Can’t Make Them Tour.”

It’s a line that composer, entrepreneur, and businessman Eric Copeland has been using for years.

Copeland grew up in a very musical and creative family. His mother was a church organist and piano teacher, and his father was a band leader and singer. At a young age Eric was working with a tape recorder, singing and writing songs, and thinking up creative stuff all night long.

By college, he found himself playing in local bands in the Lexington, KY area. Foolishly not concentrating in music while attending college, he did however get into a traveling hotel pop band, traveling the Midwest, eventually ending up in Chicago, IL. He then spent the next 5 years in the Chicagoland area working with bands and singers, going back to school (although still not concentrating in music), and honing his writing and arranging skills on keyboard.

By the time Eric moved back to Lexington at the end of 1989, he was looking to start a new chapter. He met his wife, and officially hung a shingle as a songwriter and arranger. By the mid-90s, he had added producing artists as a side job. His fledgling recording and production company Creative Soul Records flourished with artists coming from all around the US. In 2005, he moved his production and consulting business to Nashville, TN, with his company producing dozens of artists per year, garnering awards and radio play for his clients. In 2009, he realized that he wasn’t finished learning, and in 2013 finished a degree in Music History and Music Business. In May of 2021, Eric went on to earn a Master’s degree in Music Composition at the University of Central Florida. His focus these days is composition for various music libraries, one on one teaching in person, online, and through his YouTube channels MakeMusicIncome.com and HelloComposers.com, and continuing to work with artists, producers, composers, and musicians around the world, along with helping them develop something unique in their careers.

    #278 - Wipeout

    #278 - Wipeout

In the fall of 1962, Southern California high school students Jim Fuller and Pat Connolly called friend and guitarist Bob Berryhill for a practice session at Berryhill's house. The trio practiced for about four hours and met drummer Ron Wilson at a high school dance later that evening, whereupon the band was born.

But in this episode, we start before that. In the studio with us today is Bob Berryhill. We go back to the time when guitarist Bob was a 13 year old kid, learning how to surf in Hawaii. It was there he learned how to play the Ukulele. When he returned to the mainland, he sought out a ukulele teacher, but instead found a guitar instructor in the local music store.

Shortly after the four teenagers put the band together playing teen sock hops and school dances, they soon headed off to the Recording Studio, located which in those days was called Cucamonga, CA (now we’d call it Rancho Cucamonga).

While in the studio to record “Surfer Joe”, they were informed that they needed a “B” side for their 45 record. Not having one in mind, they instead sat down to write something, and within 10 minutes had recorded what went on to become top selling record called “Wipeout”.

#277 - Being a Self Sustaining Creative Person

#277 - Being a Self Sustaining Creative Person

As a young kid growing up in a musical family in St. Louis Minnesota, he discovered KISS, and from that moment on, in addition to being a hockey player in his youth (and running his first ever 5K at the age of six), all he wanted to do was become a guitarist. His mother said that was fine, but he had to learn piano first, and after 3 years of piano lessons, he could pick up the guitar. He didn’t complete those three years of lessons until he was 18 years old. By his mid 20’s he was teaching music, even though he was self-taught.

As a stay at home dad (his wife was an editor of a medical journal), he needed to contribute to the family income, and teaching seemed the natural thing to do. That along with flipping houses (his first one took him 5 years), his outside endeavors allowed him to pursue his musical career.

In this episode, we discuss how sometimes, our creative dreams can get in the way of good financial sense, how we rely on others to handle that for us (such as record labels), or completely ignore the fact of putting money away for that rainy day. How do we finance one’s career? How do you sustain your love for music in the long run, when things aren’t quite working out the way you thought?

Donovan White is a touring guitarist for the bands “Vertical Horizon”, and the “Gin Blossoms”, along with performing gigs in Nashville TN when not on the road.

#276 - Welcome To The Wild West of the Music Industry

#276 - Welcome To The Wild West of the Music Industry

Tiffanie DeBartolo, CESG & Co-Founder of Bright Antenna Records, rightfully recognizes being a woman in the music industry as an asset. “I am not afraid to bring vulnerability to my work,” she says. “I have parts that are soft and tender. I also have steadfast parts important for me to bring to the world, whether it’s my work or personal life.” Raised in Youngstown, Ohio, DeBartolo saw mainstream acts, as well as all the metal bands who passed through the area. Then, a “life-changing” U2 concert brought the realization music was a part of her deeper psyche. Cut to 2007, DeBartolo co-founded Bright Antenna Records - before the digital release reigned supreme. But her commitment to the artists and building a steel-solid team led to success in uncharted territory. DeBartolo brings an empathy in her approach to her label clients in a way that is often lacking in the music industry at large. Her ability to listen to and interpret her artists’ needs builds unyielding trust.

For DeBartolo, artist support is multi-tiered. She is known for housing bands while on tour, cooking family-style spaghetti and meatballs (nonna’s recipe), taking bands paintballing or on tropical retreats, and even baked homemade cookies for everyone at Bright Antenna and hand delivered them at the outset of COVID. She flew The Wombats on a chartered plane to a Redrocks show that absolutely needed to be played to break them. Then, did it again with Wilderado so they could make their Jimmy Kimmel Live appearance.

But there is also that deeper level of support. Kyle Nicolaides of Beware of Darkness cites how one-on-one sessions with DeBartolo literally saved his life twice during dark periods. She has also personally covered therapy costs for some artists.

“This is why we do it,” DeBartolo says. “I want to ensure that all the artists I work with can make a living doing this, which can be very challenging. I want songs I put out to change the world. I want the songs to mean something to people the way it meant to me growing up.”

    #275 - The Hanger... Music Row 2.1

Sitting in the guest co-host chair today, the creator, producer, co-host of the “2 Dudes Talk Money and Music Podcast”, and all around nice guy, John Adams joins us as we have a discussion with entrepreneur Vince King, music publisher and hit songwriter Trey Bruce, and logistics industry expert Stacy Hart.

The music industry is a constantly evolving thing, whether you live and work in Los Angeles, New York, London, Berlin, São Paulo, or Nashville. Each city has their own music scene, along with the corporate infrastructure to help guide it along. In the case of Nashville, the Music Row that so many of us worked back in the 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s, is no longer there. Vince King, Trey Bruce, and Stacy Hart share their vision of the new endeavor called “The Hanger”. A facility designed for artists to create, build, program, and rehearse their concert touring systems before their tours begin, this campus will provide the ultimate artist experience, with everything from songwriting rooms, to state of the art meeting spaces, and large rehearsal facilities with full catering and staff as needed.

#274 - European Radio... A Whole Different Ballgame

#274 - European Radio... A Whole Different Ballgame

Copenhagen Denmark based Jesper Skibsby was the manager of Danish band “Few Wolves”. Out of the blue he found out that their music was being played on the radio in Poland, but he couldn’t find any truthful or accessible data provider that could validate this information for the band. And so the story begins, Jesper found himself questioning the lack of transparency in the music industry and the way they make it difficult for music creators to access their airplay data.

As a music entrepreneur, Jesper was motivated to find a proper solution to eliminate this barrier. It was only a matter of time until he got himself immersed in research and key conversations which made him realize a major opportunity that could shake up the music industry. And so, the project we know today as WARM (Worldwide Airtime Radio Monitoring) saw an open door to get started.

Jesper is the Founder and CEO of WARM.

#273 - Is This The New Future of Radio?

#273 - Is This The New Future of Radio?

If you’re a Country music or Bluegrass music fan, you’ve most likely heard his voice on WSM Radio, along with Sirius XM’s “Bluegrass Junction. You might have even heard him as the voice of the “Grand Ole Opry” on occasion. Kyle Cantrell is now launching a new radio program titled “Banjo Radio”.

He started in radio going back to 1980. Kyle is the true epitome of what we used to call a “Disc Jockey”. He was a natural for the radio format.

Kyle Cantrell can hardly remember a time when he didn't want to be in radio. As a young boy, he became fascinated with the sound of the voices and music coming out of his grandmother's tube filled radio. The sounds of Noontime Neighbors and the Grand Ole Opry from WSM in Nashville, and Paul Harvey's distinctive voice over WSIX were some of his earliest radio memories.

Studying broadcasting and the recording industry first at the University of Tennessee and later at Middle Tennessee State, Kyle landed his first radio job in the summer of 1980 at Murfreesboro, Tennessee's WMTS. Then, in 1982, WSM called him to join the staff, and in 1985, at the age of 23, he took his place on stage as an announcer on the station's Grand Ole Opry.

In 2003, he left WSM and began a syndication company to syndicate his own classic country music show to more than 160 radio stations across the country. Then, in 2005, he was tapped by Sirius' satellite rival, XM, to take over the programming of their bluegrass channel.

Spreading his love for radio, as well as country and bluegrass music, is a continuing passion for Kyle. Now today, through Banjo Radio, a venture he launched in 2023, he continues to interact with fans all over the world.

#271 - We Have To Not Be Afraid of Change

#271 - We Have To Not Be Afraid of Change

Following the dreams of her best friend who moved to New York City to play guitar for John Lennon, Sandra Furton Gabriel, she discovered that she loved having that All Access pass that got you backstage, but she didn’t want to be an entertainer. Starting out doing odd jobs, she soon found herself interning at Rogers & Cowan, the internationally recognized public relations firm. Although that job didn’t pan out, she wound up transcribing tapes for Sam Merrill, who was doing interviews for Playboy Magazine. That in turn led to a gig with D.I.R. Broadcasting, where she was hired to book talent for comedian Robert Klein’s radio show, and the rest is history.

Sandra soon found herself becoming the producer for a newly developed TV show with a young comedian by the name of David Letterman. Now it was only a matter of booking guests for the show. It sounds easier than it was, but needless to say that the role was full of challenges including guests who didn’t know who David was (actor Peter O’Toole had no idea who Letterman was), those that didn’t show up at all (drummer Levon Helm of “The Band” fame), and actor Bill Murray (the very first guest on “Late Night With David Letterman”) who wandered off the set before taping, who finally arrived in the studio just as he was being announced. After leaving Letterman, she went on to produce “The Joan Rivers Show” up until Joan started her home shopping show.

Sandra went on to create a daytime talk show pilot tentatively titled “Girlfriends”, featuring women of different views, cultures, and ethnicities, and pitched it to ABC Television. Unfortunately the show didn’t get picked up, but in Sandra’s words, “The View” came out of her proposal, although she was left out of the production. She went on to file a lawsuit against ABC and Barbara Walters, but lost in the end. Picking herself up, and dusting herself off, she went on to work with actress, producer, and syndicated daytime talk show Rolanda Watts.

Sandra Furton Gabriel has worked with such legends as Robin Williams, Stevie Winwood, Ringo Starr, William Shatner, Kenny Loggins, Rodney Dangerfield, Michael J. Fox, along with Stevie Nicks and Art Garfunkel.

#270 - The Future of the Annual NAMM Show

#270 - The Future of the Annual NAMM Show

After a comprehensive year-long search, The NAMM Executive Committee and CEO Search Committee is pleased to announce industry veteran and music education advocate John Mlynczak is the new President and CEO of The National Association of Music Merchants. The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) has been around for the past 122 years). Simply put, if NAMM wasn’t doing it, you would notice, but at the same time, you don’t see NAMM helping the music manufacturing industry evolve and grow. With that, comes new membership opportunities, that not only include manufactures and retailers, but now provides an aspect that fits within the individual that works within the music business.

John Mlynczak is now only the 4th CEO of the organization in the past 77 years. With that, he’s had his hands full in addition to running the organization, but also rebooting the annual trade shows since Covid hit in 2020. The Global Pandemic simply shut down the Winter NAMM Show in January 2021 in Anaheim CA, along with the annual Summer show in Nashville TN. Since the reopening of public gatherings, the folks at NAMM have now worked to host three Winter NAMM Shows over an 18 month period. The most recent show had 50,000+ attendees visit the convention, and with 120 Countries being represented (and with 30% of attendees being international), it’s still the largest global gathering of the music industry.

John and his team are working to continue to build the brand that NAMM is known for, creating exciting trade shows, along with helping the music industry evolve into the 21st Century.

For more information, go to their website at www.namm.org.

He, along with his wife Amy are also owners of Good Vibez Presents, producing the largest Reggae festival in the United States, the “California Roots Music & Arts Festival”, along with their new “Rebels & Renegades” Americana festival.

Dan shares with us how his company has evolved from a small boutique operation, to one of the largest reggae and americana producers of festivals. In our conversation, we also discuss how they survived the pandemic, not only with the government’s help, but also turning up their merchandise catalog several notches, creating a new revenue stream during the Global lockdown.

#268 - What's On The Outside Does Not Match The Inside

Hailing from a tiny rural village called Collon, in Co. Louth, Ireland, Clare Cunningham is an independent, award-winning singer-songwriter (including 12 nominations at the upcoming Josie
Music Awards, which will be held at the Grand Ole Opry on Oct 22nd 2023), performing, touring, and recording artist. Her raspy, Celtic, soulful voice, with the ability to span across a multitude of genres, is what leads her to be an extremely unique artist.

Her 'GRAND OLE OPRY’ debut (March 18th, 2023) was a sold-out show and an accomplishment that’s extremely rare as a completely independent artist. A surprise add-on to the bill on the night was her childhood idol, GARTH BROOKS, and TRISHA YEARWOOD. Clare also performed with STEVE EARLE, singing his infamous ‘Galway Girl’ as a duet.

As if the stars had aligned, Clare had only just starred in the new GARTH BROOKS documentary ''GARTH BROOKS: COMING HOME'' - An exploration of the life of the country music star, looking at his biggest songs. These relationships have influenced his career and his love affair with Ireland.

Clare shares her journey, her faith, and how her music trascends oceans, culture, and her goal to help those who suffer from mental illness.

Also joining us on the show is Nashville music consultant, Jana Jones Uttz who helps co-host this episode.
