    Tributes: Pauline Kael

    Tributes: Pauline Kael

Welcome to another tribute minisode! This tribute is for Pauline Kael:

Kael was one of the most influential American film critics of her era,[2] and has left a lasting impression on film criticism. The great Chicago film critic Roger Ebert said that Kael "had a more positive influence on the climate for film in America than any other single person over the last three decades." Kael, he said, "had no theory, no rules, no guidelines, no objective standards. You couldn't apply her 'approach' to a film. With her, it was all personal.”

    Turning Back Time

    Turning Back Time

    Ragtime and Stagecoach

A classic, beloved Western from 1939 - the watershed greatest year of cinema almost didn’t happen. At the time, everyone thought the Western was dead, except John Ford – he was right, they were wrong.  The other film featured one of the greatest acting legends of Hollywood in his last and rivetting film role in 1981 as a tyrannical turn of the century police commissioner  – this actor starred in his first hit role in films in 1939 in a classic gangster drama – any ideas?! …while not a commissioner my  producer extraordinaire and wingman,  actor and cinephile, John, Schwab polices this show with j’nai sais quoi so... Let’s go to the movies.

    Wizard of Oz (1939)

It took 3 directors and an army of screenwriters (18) to get Dorothy to Oz and they made one of the most iconic and beloved movies ever put on film – I’ll even tell you how many pairs of ruby slippers still exist…

And you know who might know about those ruby slippers is my Ozophile wingman, actor and all around amazing person – John Schwab - Let’s go to the movies.

In this special holiday encore, we revisit the very first full episode of Cinema Sounds & Secrets!

Westside Story (1962) and Superman (1972) Our first film was a ground breaking musical based on a smash Broadway show, and the other a movie from a very different planet – so what do they have in common?  Both films are the best of their genre – the film musical and comic book superhero and both films brim with star power.

In 1961 our first film stunned audiences with brilliant songs and stunning choreography in a dazzling display of magic – by a team of masters from film and theatre at the top of their game; Bernstein, Sondheim, Laurents, Hal Prince and Jerome Robbins.  Our other film takes us to Metropolis where an unknown theatre actor with insane comic timing and drop dead good looks – was picked to have the lead over Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman – you might want to keep your seat belt buckled for this one as we take flight with my wingman, actor-producer and cinephile, the ever-buckled up and ready for action, John Schwab… so let’s go to the movies.

    Two that changed the 80’s

    Risky Business (1983) and 48 Hrs. (1982)

Visiting the 80’s today, we’ll travel from the burbs of Chicago to the grimy underbelly of Los Angeles.  Both films have great casts, great soundtracks and inventive, ground breaking scripts that launched the careers of two super super mega moviestars who are still kicking cinema butt today – both actors were true overnight sensations, kind of like my producer extraordinaire and wingman, actor and cinephile, John, Schwab... Let’s go to the movies!
