From Cowboys to Boogie NYC in the 70’s

Midnight Cowboy (1969) and Saturday Night Fever (1977)

Two very different tales of New York from two very different filmmakers show us the dramatic change in the decade we know as the great cultural revolution in America’s 20th Century, the 1970’s.  The anti-heros are night and day, the music couldn’t be more radically at odds, yet both are masterpieces, so much so that they are in the Library of Congress; one is #43 on the AFI all-time great movie list, the other has the 2nd highest selling soundtrack of all time and the 3rd highest grossing dance movie ever –.  The other, the first x-rated film to win the best picture Oscar…Do I have your attention? Any guesses?   I know someone dying to answer… my producer extraordinaire and wingman,  actor and cinephile, John, Schwab, and it looks like he might know…so let’s go the movies.

Two of the greatest movies of the 20th Century which are #2 and #6 on The AFI’s  greatest films ever made list-  couldn’t be more different in settings and time periods, but both are true epics and both went through very hard labor to make it to the screen – directors were nearly fired or fired, studio bosses hated the dailies and often chaos reigned; so come as we witness the impending American Civil War through the eyes of a Southern Belle and the birth of a mafia dynasty in New York City in post WWII America.  … I’m here with my producer extraordinaire and wingman – actor & cinephile John Schwab so – Let’s Go To The Movies!

Episode One: The Singing Sixties & The Super 70’s

Episode One: The Singing Sixties & The Super 70’s

Our first film was a ground breaking musical based on a smash Broadway show, and the other a movie from a very different planet – so what do they have in common?  Both films are the best of their genre – the film musical and comic book superhero and both films brim with star power.

In 1961 our first film stunned audiences with brilliant songs and stunning choreography in a dazzling display of magic – by a team of masters from film and theatre at the top of their game; Bernstein, Sondheim, Laurents, Hal Prince and Jerome Robbins.

Our other film takes us to Metropolis where an unknown theatre actor with insane comic timing and drop dead good looks – was picked to have the lead over Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman – you might want to keep your seat belt buckled for this one as we take flight.
