    Renfield

    Renfield

Special guest Clint Worthington joins us this week to review Renfield, which stars Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his familiar titular familiar Renfield. Directed by Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie, The Tomorrow War), Renfield is a horror action comedy with tons of horror, action, and comedy, but does it work as a movie? The Cinemaholics are split on this one, and it won't be a toothless fight. The film also stars Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Brandon Scott Jones.

Our intro music this week is “Journey” by Sam Cross, Monocloud, and Bertram Kvist.

    The Super Mario Bros. Movie

    The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Special guest Matt Serafini joins us this week to review The Super Mario Bros. Movie. For the first time in 30 years, Nintendo is back on the big screen (no, Detective Pikachu doesn't count). And they've even teamed up with Illumination to bring the iconic video game plumber to the big screen, this time as a computer-animated film more faithful to the basic structure of the original games. But also with loads of easter eggs and set pieces that celebrate the Mario video game franchise over the last few decades. Critics have been pretty harsh with the film while general audiences are eating it up like mushrooms. But what in the Super Mario World do the Cinemaholics think? Get ready for one of our nerdiest episodes in a long while.

Our intro music this week is "Super Mario Lofi" by Rifti Beats.

    Air

    Air

You can consider us MVPs (most virtual podcasters) this week as we review Air, the latest film directed by Ben Affleck. Yes, Ben is BACK, and he co-stars with Matt Damon in this 80s-set biographical drama from Amazon about how Nike signed with then-rookie Michael Jordan to create the Air Jordan shoe line against all odds. The movie also stars Jason Bateman, Marlon Wayans, Chris Messina, Chris Tucker, and Viola Davis. Is this movie a shoe-in for some Oscars? Is Affleck back in step? Will it be nothing but profit? Will Jon and Will calm down on the basketball puns which were cheap layups from the start?

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Welcome to the party. This week on Cinemaholics, we review Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, a new film adaptation of the classic tabletop game. Directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Game Night), Dungeons & Dragons blends medieval fantasy action with high-concept comedy, and with a game cast, no less. Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant are all here rolling the dice on this being the next big blockbuster franchise. But we're a bit divided on this one being a quest worth taking. It's a Cinemaholics battle for the ages.

    John Wick: Chapter 4

    John Wick: Chapter 4

Yeah, we're thinking John Wick is back. That's right, we review John Wick: Chapter 4 this week on Cinemaholics, once again starring Keanu Reeves as the hitman with one name. Chad Stahelski returns as director, and Ian McShane, Laurence Fisbhurne, and Lance Reddick (who recently passed away, sadly) come back as well. But we have new characters, including Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Hiroyuki Canada, Shamier Anderson, and Rina Sawayama. We also do a spoiler section at the end of the show to discuss the future of the John Wick franchise and its upcoming spinoffs.

    Shazam! Fury of the Gods

    Shazam! Fury of the Gods

A movie about imposter syndrome? Put us in, coach. That's right, we're talking Shazam! Fury of the Gods this week, which is the sequel to 2019's action superhero comedy Shazam! David F. Sandberg returns as director and Zachary Levi returns as a superhero with the power of Greek gods who is secretly a teenager (Asher Angel). We discuss our thoughts on the film itself, as well as the box office and critical reception, which has been raising eyebrows. Plus we go over the future of DC superhero movies in the wake of James Gunn's creative takeover at Warner Bros.

Interview — Zach Braff, director of 'A Good Person'

Interview — Zach Braff, director of 'A Good Person'

Zach Braff's new movie, A Good Person, stars Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman as two very different people thrust into an unlikely friendship in the wake of a horrific tragedy. This tender dramedy is Braff's fourth feature film, though the Scrubs actor has recently directed episodes of Ted Lasso, Shrinking, and more.

I sat down with Braff in San Francisco to talk about the film and what went in to making it. He discusses the grief and tragedy in his own life that formed the story, his longtime love of model trains, how he feels about directing movies he's not starring in, and a whole lot more. You can find a transcription of this interview here.

Oscars 2023 – If We Picked the Winners!

Oscars 2023 – If We Picked the Winners!

Oscars season is over, but we're just getting started. That's right, it's time for our annual "If We Picked the Winners!" episode, inspired by the Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel broadcast from the 80s and 90s (which is our intro music). And yes, we usually do this episode before the official ceremony, but you'll have to listen to find out about all that drama. We go over the nominations for the Academy Awards (Oscars 23) and pick our own winners in each category, plus this year we have the opportunity to mention who actually won and if we agree, you get the idea. Let the popularity contest begin!

    Scream VI

    Scream VI

You wanna listen to a review of a scary movie? Well, too bad. We're reviewing Scream VI this week, which is only allegedly scary. That's right, a new Scream movie has hit cinemas just a year after the "legacy sequel" of Scream V or Scream (2022), you get the idea. Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega return for another slasher mystery matchup against Ghostface, this time in New York City! Hope you have fun.

    Creed III

    Creed III

Is Creed III a knockout for the trilogy? That's right, the Rocky franchise is back, this time with Michael B. Jordan directing and adding some anime influence to the fight choreography. Jonathan Majors is here, too, and we definitely have some thoughts on the evolution of these movies and where they might go next. Also, Jon is back from his vacation in Japan, so take a look at this week's theme music. It's about as subtle as a Rocky movie.

    Cocaine Bear

Special guest Mike Overhulse from the Mad Men Men podcast joins the show while Jon is on vacation and thank goodness. Jon can't handle Cocaine Bear. He's not cool enough to hang at that Cocaine Bear party. Elizabeth Banks, director of Cocaine Bear, went out of her way to leave Jon off the invite list for Cocaine Bear. Fortunately, Will and Mike are here to talk about Cocaine Bear.

    Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

    Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Honey, Marvel shrunk our expectations! This week on Cinemaholics, it's time for another movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The 31st one, to be exact. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania sees the return of Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) bringing the whole fam (Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathryn Newton) on a cross-dimensional trek through the Quantum Realm. Only to go toe-to-toe with the next big Marvel baddie, Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors).

    Skinamarink

    Skinamarink

Some people would say Cinemaholics is a nightmare, too. This week on the show, we finally review Skinamarink, an experimental micro-budget indie horror film that has seen relatively huge box office success thanks to a viral online push. And now it's on Shudder! We start the show with a brief review of Magic Mike: The Last Dance, which Will recently watched. Plus we relitigate our long-standing debate on whether or not it's sacrilegious to watch horror movies in the morning.

    Knock at the Cabin

    Knock at the Cabin

Sure, we're split on this movie, but it's not the end of the world...right? This week on Cinemaholics, we review Knock at the Cabin, the latest feature film from writer/director M. Night Shyamalan, which is based on the book The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul G. Tremblay. Starring Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge, Rupert Grint, and more, Knock at the Cabin sure has a lot of critics answering the door in some way or another. But what do we think? You'll have to "Make The Choice" and listen to find out.

    80 for Brady

    80 for Brady

Special guest Cory Woodroof joins the show for a bonus review of 80 for Brady, a new senior comedy produced by Tom Brady that is all about...Tom Brady! Taking a step back in time to the 2017 Super Bowl, when Brady was still with the New England Patriots, 80 for Brady is more than just a vanity project. It's a vanity project from Paramount Pictures! The film stars Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, and Sally Field, along with Billy Porter, Rob Corddry, Alex Moffat, and (you guessed it) Guy Fieri.

Women Talking and the 2023 Oscar Nominations

And speaking of the Academy Awards, we discuss the announced nominations and which films we haven't seen yet, what didn't make the cut, and what we're expecting for the upcoming ceremony.

    Top 10 Films of 2022

    Top 10 Films of 2022

With a new year upon us, it's time to reflect back on our favorite movies of 2022. As usual, we discuss which films fell into our respective lists and why, plus we dig into honorable mentions and general thoughts on the year at large. From intimate animated re-imaginings like Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio to the long-awaited return of Todd Field with Tár, 2022 had no shortage of stellar movies to sift through. Especially if you wanted to see them in a packed theater.

    A Man Called Otto

    A Man Called Otto

The Upside called and wants its January counter-programming American remake marketing campaign back. That's right, we're reviewing A Man Called Otto this week, which hits wide release tomorrow through Sony/Columbia. The Pittsburgh-set movie stars Tom Hanks as (you guessed it) Otto, and the Cinemaholics have a wonderful time debating Hanks' performances over the last year. We also discuss (briefly) Marc Forster's filmography thus far and how this new movie compares to A Man Called Ove, the original Swedish adaptation of the book by Fredrik Backman.

    M3GAN

    M3GAN

This year's January horror blockbuster isn't child's play. Dollhouse? No, it's from Blumhouse! That's right, this week we're welcoming M3GAN into The Hollywood franchise family. Directed by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) and written by Akela Cooper (Malignant), M3GAN stars Allison Williams as a genius toy inventor who tests out a life-size doll with artificial intelligence on her depressed niece (Violet McGraw). Hijinks ensue! We discuss the film's surprisingly brilliant marketing campaign, and we may or may not overanalyze the emotional intelligence of this seemingly disposable schlock. We had fun, basically.
