Episode 227 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below.

Dr. Sheilagh Maguiness is here today to talk about skin care. As tweens enter puberty it is important that they know how to have healthy hygiene, with both body and skin care habits. There are big differences between girls' and boys' hygiene. It is important that we educate and show our tweens and teens how to care for themselves. Mental health and depression can be tied into low self esteem from skin issues. Acne can be a result of hormonal changes, genetic components, and how your immune system responds to bacteria. We can help our kids by having them wash their face twice a day with a gentle cleanser, and make sure to keep the products simple, hypoallergenic, and fragrance free. If you are looking for a local pediatric dermatologist, you can find them here: www.pedsderm.net.

You know when you see “dermatologist-formulated” on our packaging? We’re talking about our co-founder, Dr. Sheilagh Maguiness. She’s a board-certified pediatric dermatologist with a busy clinical practice and a passion for teaching. She is devoted to educating patients, families, and primary care providers about childhood skin conditions.

Through Stryke Club, Dr. Sheilagh helped develop a personal care brand to address the needs of boys in particular. Along with her Stryke Club partners, she set out to fill the gap in boys’ skincare. The team found the perfect combination of mild surfactants (ie: cleansers) and a common, effective ingredient (ie: sodium hypochlorite) to help fight dirt and bacteria – and put them together to make a cleanser specifically for boys.

Episode 225 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below.

Tess Jewell-Larsen is here today to talk about how she empowers women from feeling exhausted to finding balance. It is so easy to get caught up in our thoughts. She focuses on where these women are lacking or overdoing something, and she tries to help them find one thing they can do for themselves to get to a balanced state. It is important to feel all emotions and allow them to be there, and not push them away. When we don’t process these emotions, it can cause unease. Processing can be done through many different avenues, such as: gardening, movement, talking, and drawing. We need to be fully aware and find what nourishes us. By making tiny changes in our lives, it can affect how we show up.

Tess Jewell-Larsen empowers women professionals, entrepreneurs and juggling-it-all’ers to go from exhausted and overwhelmed to balanced and thriving. Tess is a certified mindfulness coach, somatic healer and a Yoga Therapist in training. Tess emphasizes breath support, mindful movement, stress management, nervous system resiliency, mindset and lifestyle shifts, and taking small steps that build up, so that her clients feel more joyful, balanced, and optimistic, and thrive no matter what obstacles come their way. Episode 223: How to empower your brain

Episode 223 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below.

Adele Spraggon is here to ask our listeners if your patterns of behavior are continuously getting in the way and stopping you from getting the things you want most in your life? She says forget commitment, willpower, positive-thinking, mindset techniques, or better goal-setting. These approaches are a thing of the past. We were told to use our mind to fix our problems, but this is simply not the case. Current brain research proves that you are not in control of your choices. Instead, your decisions are the result of decision-making patterns that were created early in life and that continue to control your life. To take different actions, you need to change your patterns. That means no blame in your past, no shame in your future, and nothing to fix in your present. There are only patterns and patterns can be changed. She wrote an award-winning book that provides the necessary knowledge and step-by-step instructions to change any of your behaviors, actions, or beliefs – permanently – in less than six weeks.

Adele Spraggon is an award-winning author, thought leader, international trainer and a fearless speaker. She suggests slowing your breath, meditation, taking a bath, listening to music, or journaling for better sleep. One practice that she discusses is using your five senses. Episode 217: Entrepreneurship

Episode 217 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below.

Mary Katherine Stahl is here today to discuss her entrepreneurial journey. She started working out at a Fit Body Boot Camp and loved the coaches and the community. She decided to open her own business and now six years later, she has opened three locations. She shares her successes and obstacles about balancing a career and being a mom. She believes her success is linked to understanding the importance of relationships with her clientele and coaches.

Mary Katherine Stahl is a busy mom, wife, and multi-business owner. She has a love for health and fitness and inspires others to be the best version of themselves. At the young age of 25, she started as a member at a Fit Body Boot Camp and it quickly became the best part of her day every day. At the time she was working in an operations role at a real estate firm, which did not provide any sense of purpose. She used that passion and energy she felt at boot camp to open her own location in August 2017.

In addition to owning two locations, in July 2020, MK took over a failing Fit Body Boot Camp and grew it by 4 times of where it started in less than 2 years.

Today she is not only passionate about helping her clients but also about providing her team with opportunities to grow. MK attributes a lot of her success to building culture and community within her business. She believes building strong relationships is the key to having a successful business and team.

MK grew her career and family together, two things that require a lot of time, something we can never seem to get enough of! Being a Mom is her most important job title, though balancing motherhood and work seems almost impossible these days. MK prides herself on helping others move outside of their comfort zone, at the gym, and in all areas of life.

MK also serves as the Community Manager for the Fit Body Boot Camp franchise and is the host of the Beyond the Scale podcast. She is the voice of the people and the face of the organization. She explains the first mistake is that people think it is a diet. It is a timing, an eating window, that is not for weight loss. By tuning into your personal goals and what feels good to you, you will discover what are your ideal fasting hours. She discusses how it is easier to make good food choices when in a fasted state. The best way to start is to decide when to close your eating window. By shrinking your eating window, you will start to look at the foods that make you feel good. Your body will start to use its own body fat for energy and will keep your Insulin low. Your body will learn to eat “window worthy” nutritious food and how much to eat and when to stop eating.

Certified coach, Laurie Lewis, has changed the lives of thousands through her coaching of Intermittent Fasting. Utilizing time-tested (and science-tested) principles, Laurie takes on individual clients as well as leading her group programs Live on Zoom. She helps determined, exasperated, busy people (who are tired of dieting!) from the United States to New Zealand to Ghana to Israel to Scotland.

Combining a 22-year personal study of nutrition (Health Coach Certification from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition) with her research and practice of Intermittent Fasting, Laurie supports clients and participants with a dream come true. Yes, it is possible to eat the foods you love and live your life feeling strong, vibrant, and lean!

Menopause and stubborn hormonal fat hit Laurie hard in 2012, causing her to suddenly gain 50 pounds. For years, she tried everything and none of the old tricks worked. She hit rock-bottom and almost resigned to the “fact” that she would keep getting heavier and feeling worse and worse forever. At a particularly despondent time in 2017, a video unexpectedly popped up which would turn the course of her life. She stayed up all night learning about Intermittent Fasting, and started that very next morning.

Within days of eating in this newfound pattern of time, the fog lifted and she felt awake and “like herself.” With health, strength, and slender weight restored – 50+ pounds lost. Now, at 59-years old, Laurie has turned her personal success into the premier thriving Intermittent Fasting coaching business. As a certified health coach (Institute for Integrative Nutrition) she combines her knowledge of nutrition with deep research and practice of Time Restricted Eating. Laurie guides her clients with a dream come true -- eat the foods you love and enjoy the rest of your life feeling vibrantly well.

    Episode 213: Gender Identity

Episode 213 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below.

Dr. Lulu is here today to discuss gender identity. She identifies this as your true sense of self, how you see yourself, something, no one else can tell you. She stresses the importance of respecting someone’s gender identity. She is a pediatrician and talks about how to be the patient’s advocate and how to really listen to what they are saying. It is imperative that children have at least one trusted adult. She coaches parents who are triggering kids, parents who are not affirming; and home needs to be a safe place. We don’t have to understand, we just need to know. Pediatricians and parents need to ask open ended questions, use pronouns, and affirm who they are.

Dr. Lulu is a Queer, Nigerian-born pediatrician, educator, parent coach, and CEO of Dr. Lulu’s Life Coaching Lounge. She is the mother of a transgender young adult and works to educate families, healthcare providers and non-medical organizations on accepting, affirming and supporting their LGBTQ+ children/patients/employees. A former Lt. Col and commander in the US Air Force, Dr. Lulu is also an award winning LGBTQ+ and DEI advocate. She has been featured on local, national and international media and stages, including Oprah Winfrey’s The Life You Want masterclass. She is a 3-time TedxSpeaker, 7-time bestselling author and all round agitator of the Governor of Texas. She can be found at Dr-lulu.com.

Episode 212: Four Drivers of Obesity

Episode 212: Four Drivers of Obesity

Episode 212 of my Curate Your Health Podcast is out! Link below.

David Greenwalt is here today to discuss how he helps people learn the truth about mental fitness, nutrition and movement. Obesity is at its highest level ever, with about 40 percent of U.S. adults considered obese. The cause of obesity, he believes, can be broken down into four drivers. One: biological drives, we are driven to calorie dense foods to avoid food scarcity that evolution has built in us. Two: habit condition automatic responses, we use food to change our mental state so that we feel relief, checked out and relaxed. Three: addiction to ultra-processed food.  And the fourth driver is our obese genetic environment. These are all external forces that promote obesity: fast food restaurants, proximity, convenience marts, access, opportunity for less activities, parental modeling, marketing, and government subsidies.

By becoming more aware of these factors, we can learn to implement strategies to have a different response.  Sometimes we need someone else to help us become aware of our subconscious behaviors. If we are aware and are able to catch the behavior as soon as it happens, we can begin to lay down a new healthier path. When you have the support and education, real strategies can win against the external factors and be able to put behaviors in place to lose the weight for the last time.

With us today is Certified Wellness Coach, fitness expert, and author David Greenwalt. A husband, father, former police officer, gym owner, competitive state-level bodybuilder, and powerlifter. In 1997, at age 32 and a body weight of 235 pounds, David discovered an evidence-based approach for getting off his own 50 excess pounds and keeping it off for 25 years and counting. Since 1999, through his company Leanness Lifestyle University, David has been helping student members, from every walk of life, get the truth, and strategies, to lose excess fat one more time for the last time.

Hally Brooke is here today to discuss her journey with gut health and brain fog. She discovered by figuring out what foods worked for her, she was able to balance her emotions better and think straight. By being more thoughtful and mindful with the way food made her feel, she was able to heal her gut health. She mentions that by paying attention to what her body needed, she was able to feel better, and what helps one person, may not help another.

Hally Brooke is the Founder & CEO of Live Nourished, she is a Certified Functional Medicine Nutrition Counselor, Nationally Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach, Fox 21 Fitness & Nutrition Expert, and a fierce industry advocate. Her self-education in nutrition and exercise began in 2014 when she battled and overcame her own serious GI issues including IBS and SIBO. Through her own process of finding wholeness, health and healing for herself, as well as her education and experience with her clients, Hally has learned that living a nourished life takes more than just “eating healthy” or working out. Hally teaches that “true health” is a blend of not only physical health, but also mental, emotional & spiritual wellbeing. And that sometimes “health” looks like enjoying a burger instead of a salad, or taking a nap instead of going on a run. From that experience, she has built a thriving Functional Medicine Coaching practice that works with clients in ALL the key areas of wellness including movement, nutrition, mindset, resilience, relationships, and self-care. Her life mission is to encourage, empower and free women by teaching healing. Whether as clients, through speaking events, business coaching, or personally with the people she encounters, she lives and breathes this mission day in and day out.
