    Episode 206: Our Energy Body

    Episode 206: Our Energy Body

Dr. Hammerstedt is joined today by Tina Koopersmith MD who gives a beautiful overview of who we are through our brain and our body. She discusses how our heart energy can be felt six feet away and if we have a positive energy field, people can feel it. Likewise, if you are in a negative environment, the heart rate is lower, and you can feel the negative energy. She talks about healing techniques that can heal the body. We are connected between our brain and our heart. And, by using techniques that play with your emotions and thoughts, you can gently move your emotions into a peaceful state.

Tina Koopersmith MD is a physician AND coach, a mom and a perpetual student. She is dedicated to modifying our health care system from one focused on illness and sickness to one devoted to prevention and wellness. For 30 years as a fertility specialist, she focused on bringing life to her patients and now she wants to focus on bringing her patients (and other humans) to life. She starts with the premise we all have the same parts and very similar DNA, and yet we all have different experiences and imprinting. Our unique signature means we are all wired to access pleasure in a slightly different fashion. Diversity is to be praised and celebrated. We need to nourish all 4 of our bodies: the mind body, the heart body, the physical body and the energetic body because we are ALL worthy of self-care, self-acceptance and self-love. Episode 203: Navigating Complex Care for Children

Episode 203: Navigating Complex Care for Children

Dr. Hammerstedt is joined today by Dr. Stella K. Evans, MD to discuss complex care for children with disabilities and their caregivers. She talks about how she is the prime contact for the caregivers, and she helps navigate the best care through their health team. There are a few roadblocks that she wants parents to know about. She stresses that this is not the parent’s fault and sticking with regret, fear and guilt will not move them forward to plan for the future. Also, it is alright to ask for help to find the best care for your children. And finally, always get another opinion if you don’t feel like you are getting the care your child deserves.

Dr. Evans is a pediatrician in the Twin Cities of Minnesota with a long career in (and personal history with) care of the complex patient, especially in the family setting. She is a life coach,  neurolinguistic programming trainer, and clinical Ericksonian hypnotist, and she works with parents of children and youth with special health care needs to build their resilience and mental  health. Episode 199: How to Become MindStrong

Episode 199: How to Become MindStrong

Rachel Freiman is here today to discuss how to become MindStrong. Her aim is to educate women and to cut through all the conflicting information. She talks about stepping back, wiping the slate clean and starting to approach health and fitness as a life skill. It is important to understand what diets you tried, why it didn’t work, be able to release the past, and start with a new skill base. It is basic human nature for our brain to fight back against change. It is all about baby steps and momentum. We are pleasure seekers, however, when we take baby steps and mentally celebrate it, all the feel good chemicals will be released and our brain will say that it feels good. This will begin to snowball and our brain will say let’s do that again and what else can I do? Weight loss journey is full of ups and downs, when we can focus on the steps along the way, we don’t have to worry about the end point. There is a three step process to building habits. Accountability is the first step which should not be seen as a weakness, it is what you need. Next, you form a habit through consistency. And finally there is a neuro connection as you repeat actions, this will become a habit.

Rachel Freiman is the CEO of MindStrong Fitness, www.MindStrongFitness.com, a lover of lifting heavy things up and down, and a coach passionate about helping others unleash their strongest, most empowered selves through education and mindset training. Rachel has more than fifteen years of classroom instruction and certifications in personal training, sports nutrition, and behavior modification. She is the author of the bestselling book Becoming MindStrong: The Truth About Health, Fitness, and the Bullsh*t That’s Holding You Back. Available on Amazon or Audible

Rachel developed MindStrong Fitness with an inside-out approach, to focus on both physical and mental attributes in building healthy, sustainable habits.

When she’s not in the gym, Rachel enjoys exploring the world, snuggling with her puppy, Charlie, eating, and thinking about the next time she'll be eating.

Episode 198: Post Covid New Normal

Episode 198: Post Covid New Normal

Jonathan Baktari MD is here today to discuss Post Covid New Normal. He talks about the vaccines and how it will be a seasonal vaccine moving forward. The vaccines will be especially important, especially with people with risk factors and the elderly. We will need to learn to live with Covid, and it will be part of viruses that people will get. He also mentions how Covid was an accelerator for many things, including: remote working, zoom calls and more online shopping, all things, which he believes, would have happened eventually. However, with these changes, you do lose the collaboration and the company culture. He believes we need to make more changes to organizations so that they are more energy efficient with better ventilation. The importance of preventative health was discussed, such as eating more plant based foods, moving the body more and finding better stress reactions.

Episode 197: How To Have a Better Conversation About Your Health

Episode 197: How To Have a Better Conversation About Your Health

Dr. Faryal Michaud is a board certified internist and a palliative care physician that is here today to discuss How To Have a Better Conversation About Your Health. She believes there is a misunderstanding of what palliative care is. She describes this type of care as a layer of support to help through the bumpy road of an illness, and to help families be able to connect to services. The layer of support is different for every patient and their family. And, only if the bumpy road is too much, then hospice would get involved, but that is not the palliative care role.

She stresses the importance of understanding what the patient and family knows, and what it is that they want to do. She talks about the -Wish, Worry, Wonder Guide. This model can be explained by saying - I wish you could get better, then worry about the type of care that the patient can get and if they will improve, and then finally, wonder if we should have a conversation about this.

Dr. Faryal Michaud has been practicing inpatient palliative care medicine for the past 10 years which she believes is her true passion. Around the time of COVID, and having moved to Hawaii with her husband and two teenage daughters, she felt incredibly isolated and decided to start a podcast focusing on teaching patients and physicians how to have difficult conversations surrounding end of life issues. Her podcast, “Write Your Last Chapter” has been popular domestically and internationally, creating further evidence that this topic is both poorly understood and deeply needed.

She then decided to start “Physicians Living Intentionally” to focus on what matters as well as provide a space for poetry and reflection. In 2021 she started her business of life coaching for women physicians focusing on teaching how to live intentionally every day. As a certified mindfulness teacher, her program offers ongoing teachings by certified yoga, and mindfulness teachers, as well as group and one on one coaching. She also provides pro bono coaching for patients suffering from serious illness who are unable to afford her services.

She has created a simple 3 step guide to have difficult conversations that can be applied to clinicians as well as moms everywhere on her website: www.drfaryal.com.

Tandy Gutierrez joins us today to discuss Our Bodies as a Fitness Vessel. Fitness can look like many different things—it doesn’t have to be boiled down to running long distances or lifting heavy things. Small muscles, slow movements, and rest can all be just as important to our fitness and our results. Noticing what feels good to our bodies can be hard to do but can be so helpful in the long term. Tandy says, “less is the new more!” So, how can we listen better to our bodies?

    Episode 191: Kind Intentional Boundaries

    Episode 191: Kind Intentional Boundaries

Tammie Chang, MD joins us today to discuss Kind Intentional Boundaries. Boundaries are a relatively new concept that were essentially introduced to the public in the 1990’s, so they’re not something our parents (for example) grew up with. As women, we were socialized not to talk back or complain and to be caretakers and givers, so this makes the concept of boundaries extra difficult (and potentially feel negative). Burnout in women, especially physicians, is real, but boundaries can mean freedom. So, how do we set positive boundaries with kindness and intent?

Dr. Tammie Chang is a board-certified physician in pediatric hematology/oncology practicing in Tacoma, Washington at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital. She is the Medical Director of the MultiCare Provider Wellness Program and Founder and Director of her hospital’s Pediatric Cancer Survivorship Program. She is the Co-Founder of Pink Coat, MD, a safe, supportive and loving community for women physicians that supports them in doing their best work and living their best lives, and the founder of her empowerment and leadership coaching practice, Tammie Chang, MD. She is also a certified empowerment and leadership coach for early career women physicians. Tammie has a newly released bestselling book on Amazon called "Boundaries for Women Physicians: Love Your Life and Career in Medicine" and can be purchased at www.tammiechangmd.com/buythebook.
