Episode 186: Using Neuroplasticity as a Tactic for Stress Response

Dr. Vanessa Calderón, MD, MPP joins us today to discuss Using Neuroplasticity as a Tactic for Stress Response. Neuroplasticity refers to how the brain can shape, shift and remodel based on our perceptions. Our brains are hard wired for us to survive, which causes us to experience stress all day long. We can’t change our external environment, so how do we remodel our brains and change our perception to the stressors in our environment? Dr. Calderón will explain how this is possible and share some self-regulation techniques to break the stress cycle.

Episode 185: Gratitude Series - A Musical Path Toward Healing

Episode 185: Gratitude Series - A Musical Path Toward Healing

Frank Kilpatrick & Rayko join us to discuss their Gratitude Series - A Musical Path Toward Healing, which includes songs that introduce people to meditations for gratitude. It’s so important to find richness in our everyday experiences. For so many of us, meditation can be difficult as it’s a challenge to slow down our thoughts and our brains, but music is a way to accomplish this more easily. We will learn more about these concepts and how these artists got inspired to collaborate on this series, and we’ll get to listen to The Awakening piece of their music.

Frank Kilpatrick created Gratitude to “draw attention to everything we have to be thankful for.” Frank created lyrics for all songs in the Gratitude suite and oversaw video and music production. He has written numerous songs in exploratory, harmonic and romantic genres that are available for licensing. Recently, he created “Stay Alive” – a 90-minute Suicide Prevention video podcast.

An “Emotional Conduit,” Rayko is a prolific songwriter and an energetic, sought- after vocalist. Rayko composed the melodies for Gratitude and sang, played on and produced all pieces as well. Her compositions often contain themes of social justice, female perspectives and cross-cultural challenge. Rayko is the vocalist in the house band of a popular Adult Swim show, and currently the voice of a new ride in Tokyo Disneyland.

Episode 184: Food, Money and Investing in Yourself

Episode 184: Food, Money and Investing in Yourself

Bonnie Koo, MD is here today to discuss Food, Money and Investing in Yourself. The decision to invest in yourself is an important one and often seems difficult to do. What price will you pay in 1, 5, or even 10 years if you don’t invest in yourself today? And it turns out, our thoughts can be similar around money and around food--emotional eating is like emotional spending. A budget feels like a “money diet” according to Dr. Koo, and buying something to feel better is like eating something to feel better. Creating a restrictive budget OR diet creates an impossible situation that sets you up for failure and for you to rebel against it. Learning the skills you need is more important than forcing yourself into these restrictions. Dr. Koo will discuss these topics and share her top money-related tips today.

Bonnie Koo, MD is certified life coach, physician and founder of Wealthy Mom MD. She is a proud graduate of Barnard College and Columbia University's College of Physicians & Surgeons. Her mission is to help women create wealth and rewrite history. She is the host of the Wealthy Mom MD Podcast and author of Defining Wealth for Women: (n.) Episode 183: Perimenopause - Taking Back Control of YOU

Episode 183: Perimenopause - Taking Back Control of YOU

Vanessa Ford is here to discuss Perimenopause - Taking Back Control of YOU. How much do we really know and understand about perimenopause? Wouldn’t it be great to know more before it starts so we can efficiently talk to our doctor about our options? Vanessa has done the research to explain what’s going on in our bodies and how it impacts our lives, as well as the triggers that bring on the symptoms.

Vanessa Ford is an author, menopause/perimenopause expert, and cofounder of Menolabs, which focuses on women’s issues during the perimenopausal/menopausal transition. Vanessa was prompted to action when, at 44, she began her own transition into menopause. Unsatisfied with the lack of support that women experience during this stage of life, and finding the stereotypes of women in mid-life exasperating and insulting, she created MenoLabs to address what she sees as a glaring need in every woman’s life. Vanessa’s app is called MenoLife and can be found on the app store and her website at menolabs.com. She can also be found on Facebook at @menolabs and on Instagram at @vanessa.menolabs. She is providing a free e-book especially for our listeners called How to Master Menopause: Practical Guidance for Dealing with Hot Flashes, Weight Gain, Insomnia, Mood Swings, and Other Menopause Symptoms (written by Vanessa and cofounder, Danielle Jacobs), which can be found here: https://menolabs.com/pages/curate-your-health.

Episode 180: Compounding Pharmacy - A Unique Approach for Unique Patients

Episode 180: Compounding Pharmacy - A Unique Approach for Unique Patients

Peter Koshland, Pharm.D joins us today to discuss the Compounding Pharmacy - A Unique Approach for Unique Patients. A compounding pharmacy tailors options to the individual patient when a commercial drug isn’t working by making customized prescription medications from scratch. For example, they can make a dosage that doesn’t commercially exist, or include a discontinued drug (when it's still available in bulk active ingredients). These pharmacies connect with physicians so they can be used as a resource to help them figure out what the patient might need if something isn’t working. Their medications are considered affordable as they are able to cut out some of the distribution process. Listen to learn more about compounding pharmacies and what they can provide for patients as well as the obstacles they face.

Peter Koshland, PharmD is a graduate of Georgetown University (1996) and the University of California at San Francisco School of Pharmacy (2000). Peter opened his compounding pharmacy, Koshland Pharm, in 2009 in San Francisco, and has continued to work with doctors and patients on individualized, integrative therapies that make a difference in the quality of patients’ day-to-day lives. He trains and consults with doctors across the state of California in the areas of hormone replacement, thyroid disorders and compounding applications for dermatology, urology, and pain management. Peter can be found on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram @koshlandpharm and on his website at www.koshlandpharm.com. He’d like to encourage patients to submit their positive health outcomes with compounded therapies to the https://compounding.com/ website, and to visit the national organization at http://a4pc.org/.

Episode 177: The Mindset of Sleep

Episode 177: The Mindset of Sleep

Devin Burke is here today to discuss The Mindset of Sleep. Generally, there are four or five 90-minutes cycles of sleep per night with biological processes taking place during these cycles. REM sleep is deep, dreaming sleep, but light sleep is just as important as it gets you to your deeper stage of sleep. Sleep is so crucial, but is unfortunately put on the side lines too often. So, can we naturally reset our bodies in order to get better sleep? What’s going on in our minds creating fear and anxiety that’s keeping us from sleeping? Getting support and reframing the “middle of the night,” negative thoughts is a good place to start. What are some tools to help with that? How do we get out of our brains and let our bodies get the sleep they need? Devin will share some helpful tips during today’s episode.

Devin Burke is an international and TEDx speaker, the bestselling author of The Sleep Advantage, the founder of Sleep Science Academy, and one of the top health and sleep coaches in the world. His books, keynotes, programs and videos have inspired thousands of people to improve their sleep, energy, and life. Devin Burke helps high achievers and exhausted insomniacs get and stay asleep so they can wake up with more peace, power and presence. Episode 175: Peri and Post Menopausal Dermatology Skills

Episode 175: Peri and Post Menopausal Dermatology Skills

Kemunto Mokaya, M.D., aka Dr. Kemmy, is here today to discuss Peri and Post-Menopausal Dermatology Skills. How can we keep our skin as healthy as we can as we age? This is a big transitional period for us and estrogen levels will decrease quickly, which affects the hydration and collagen in our skin. In the first five years of menopause, we lose up to 30% of our collagen, which causes skin to be thinner and lose elasticity, which causes more prominent fine lines, wrinkles, and shorter cell turnover. Our skin can suddenly seem more sensitive as a result. What can we do about this? Thankfully there is good news! Dr. Kemmy will share some great insights and advice with us today, from the types of products we should use, to the ingredients we should look for, recommended lifestyle changes, diet, and so much more.

Dr. Kemmy is a highly respected, Ivy-league educated, board-certified dermatologist. She is skilled in medical, surgical, ethnic, cosmetic, and lifestyle dermatology. She has been practicing for about a decade, and is trusted by thousands for the exemplary, compassionate care that she provides. Dr. Kemmy is also a mindset coach, author, and speaker. She has written the book Live and Look Younger: A Dermatologist's Guide to Youthful Skin and Ageless Beauty which will be released around December 2021. Her mission is to help people adopt and sustain healthy minds and bodies so that they can live to their fullest potential. Dr. Kemmy can be found on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @drkemmymd and on her website at www.drkemmymd.com.

There are several effective types of therapy, like cognitive behavioral therapy (or CBT), which helps us understand how our thoughts are affecting our behavior, and EMDR. Many of these can be done remotely now. Medication, especially SSRI’s, are often used in combination with therapy to increase serotonin in your brain. So, how can we help our loved ones when we feel like they need it? Dr. Choulet will share helpful information surrounding these topics in today’s podcast.
