Episode 5: Season 3 Episode 5 Matt Gildersleeve “Strength is all a definition of how it’s expressed in the sport”

This week we are joined by 2023 Seminar presenter, Kansas University’s Director of Sports Performance for football, Matt Gildersleeve. Our last discussion with Sleeve was OTR #79, and we catch up right where we left off. Sleeve dives into:

    • What the first off season was like, and how it set up their program moving forward.
    • The impact of the COVID summer and in what ways that continues to impact his program.
    • A simple thing that has helped him not stay “stuck in his ways” and keep pushing to find better ways, means, and methods for all aspects of life.
    • How the law of 100/100 has impacted him both professionally and personally
    • What “really matters” and how “winning the off season” sometimes isn’t what leads to the best on field results.
    • How becoming a father changed his thought process and how he sees the word “sacrifice”

We hope you’re as excited as we are to welcome Coach Sleeve to The Seminar, July 21 and 22 at PLAE HQ! For more info and to book your seats use the link here: https://cvasps.com/2023-seminar/

I couldn’t be more excited to have had the opportunity to sit down and catch up with 2023 presenter Coach Boo Schexnayder on this week’s episode of The Podcast. After a quick catch-up with Coach Boo we get into:

    1)     The role of science and practical common sense thinking in coaching, and how what is “scientific” vs common sense has come full circle.

    2)     What the role of research is in his coaching, and how he sees some limitations to research

    3)     Why he’s very reserved when it comes to the flavor of the week fads and leans towards time tested methods and means

    4)     The role of coming up as a coach before the “technology movement” has helped him have a better understanding of what is and isn’t useful in sports tech.

    5)     Trusting your instincts when it comes to making decisions on programming and during training session.

    6)     How important mistakes are in a coach’s development ONLY if they are able to be critical of themselves.

    7)     The importance of having outside interests from coaching to help us stay grounded and avoid burnout.

I hope you’re as excited as I are to bring to Coach Boo back to The Seminar and can join us at PLAE HQ this July 21st and 22nd! For more info and to book your seats use the link here: https://cvasps.com/2023-seminar/

    3)     The challenges to finding out what truly maters when it comes to impacting wins and losses

    4)     What matters when it comes to “doing your job well”?

You figure out you’re on the wrong track when your athletes are not performing well, but that mistake has been made three months before when you didn’t see it, when you though “hey this is going great, I’m such a good coach.” Then they fail miserably, and then that mistake has been made before so always try to plan ahead.”

What’s up everybody and welcome the 95th episode of Outside The Rack brought to you by Kinetic Performance the makers of Gymaware. In this weeks episode I get to catch up with Cameron Ringstead to discuss how we have upgraded our off season program because of some of the shortcomings we saw during the pandemic. After a real quick run down of how he got down to Elon we get into how each of his stops along the way have left an impression on him and how he’s molded them together to work with his athletes. He then dives into how the past 18 months have impacted his decisions leading into our first true offseason in a two years. This includes some self audits on what they had the athlete’s do during their time home, and some issues that arose because they may have moved too fast too soon. He then talks us through some of the direction he see’s his program going into this offseason and the season with his basketball players.
