This week I had the pleasure of sitting down and talking about building a re-education phase in your training plan with Aj Kerr. After a run down of how he got down to Wofford we start to talk about how this past 15 months have impacted what we have been looking to do with our athletes. This leads AJ into how he has reevaluated his program, what has changed, and these changes have had a positive impact on the student athletes. We then talk about how the change in focus of having the answers to looking to ask the questions has made a huge impact on what he does with the men and women there. We finish off talking about some lessons from the pandemic and some positive influences it has had.

Following up on last weeks My Thoughts Monday’s discussion on podcasts that I listen to in reference to personal finance, this week I share three books that have helped me dig into the subject. These three books have all driven me to ask different questions to help with the directions I’ve gone when it comes to ways to help the compensation packages we receive do better for us over time. The topic of personal finance has gone from something I”ve been afraid to talk about to now one of my favorite topics of discussion, and a lot of that is because of these three books. Would love to hear from you if you have any other references you recommend to others that have helped drive you into different ways to help your money do better for you.

Success leaves clues is a phrase we use a lot in sport. It’s one though, in my opinion, that we may look for a bit to much for. In sport you see a lot of people looking for answers to success instated of clues, or commonalities, with teams that are successful. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share where I feel we could do a bit better with this.

Recently I had the opportunity to talk eastern medicine with Mike Guadango. After a intro how Mike got into training, we dive right into where the idea of acupuncture came from. This leads us down the rabbit hole of what acupuncture has taught him about what we, as coaches, can do better. Many of these issues revolve around our need to prove our worth, driving us to push athletes further then may be required for elite performance. These lessons stem from his time working with elite and pro athlete’s and seeing how doing work with them to feel better was more impactful for performance then any key performance indicators we tie to training. We finish off discussing the role of teaching skills in training, and where we may or may not truly make an impact. Make sure you check out the Mike and Brooker show:

Progressions and regressions in training are something we love to talk about, but we may not always do that in our energy system development. In this week My Thoughts Monday I discuss some ways we are may be limiting some athletes development in this aspect of their development and how we are attempting to find “stop points” to help us ensure we are “pushing” the athletes to continue to develop.

Dr. Mann discusses the role of some simple equations that coaches can utilize to dive deeper into the metrics that we all look at already. This includes looking at power outputs in jumps and momentum in sprinting to look at the how the athletes are developing in relation to their body mass. This will allow coaches to have a better understanding of, not just the effects of the added mass of the athlete, but also if they athlete may actually be strong enough.

This week I had the opportunity to discuss the development of a long term athletic development model with Rick Franzblau. After a quick run down of how he got down to Clemson we discuss how longevity in one location has helped us each develop the thoughts and processes that we are trying to continue to build upon at our institutions. He then shares with us how the model that he’s working on at Clemson got started, includes what was the driving factor behind the evolutions to this model. He then shares with us a pretty in-depth breakdown of their progressions in their model, where there are some places where they individualize the program, and how different teams move at different paces. He also runs down the rabbit hole of technology, the pros and con’s of it, and the importance of the strength coach understanding what the metrics mean and how to impact them. Rick has developed an ever evolving but scaleable LTAD program, and gives some really great insight into each aspect of it that can really help each of us reflect a bit on what we are doing and possible ways to improve how we evaluate what we are doing.
