The past thirteen months have been hard. The stress we have all been under has been really trying, but we are now getting to go back at it and enter an off season. This weeks My Thoughts Monday is a reflection of the past year and how a FaceTime made me take a step back and think about where I am personally. I don’t know about you, but all of this has pushed me to my edge of sanity a few times. As tired as I am and how stressful this all was, I’m still super excited to get back at it. With that in mind, how much better can I be for the athletes if I find a way to recover a bit? That’s why I’m taking a vacation and trying to find a way to decompress, and am hoping you can too.

We are joined this week by Dr. Christine Na to talk weight lifting and returning from injury. After a quick intro we get into how, like many coaches, an injury that she experienced impacted her education path. Having herself be a test subject was a great learning experience that truly drove her to passion of passing this on. This complete reevaluation of how she was moving, and deeper dive into how to get her issues “corrected” so she could continue to progress as a weight lifter. She gives us a brief overview of what she looks for when she evaluates athletes, and how individuality in how we move is so vital.

Episode 542: My Thoughts Monday #182- Jay DeMayo- How The Past Year Is Impacting Our Programming

Thirteen months ago we all go shut down as the pandemic stopped the world. We then ran to zoom for multiple learning experiences to help us all grow and do better for our athlete’s as we started to return back to sport. Everyone was petrified about what could happen to the athletes when they came back in this detrained state. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I reflect a bit on how those thoughts impacted our training throughout the year, and how it needs to have an impact on what we are doing going forward because this is our first off season in two years.

This week I have the absolute pleasure to catch up with Jill Zeller and talk about professional growth. After a quick run down of how she got out to USC we get into our evolutions as coaches. This leads her to her pillars of training and why having these as your totem to fall back on is so important. Tying into that we discuss mentors, what they have taught her, and things she has brought from each of her stops on the way out to LA. She then dives into how being a single sport strength coach helped her learn better ways to find solutions to make sure the team is moving in the right direction. We finish the talk sharing different ways we have navigated our way through the down days of the pandemic with some successful ways to make training a bit more competitive.

Chris Hays returns to My Thoughts Monday to discuss some ways he’s been giving his athletes a bit of autonomy in training with rep ranges. Giving this flexibility is something he’s had success with when it comes to allowing the athletes a bit of say with their daily training based on how they feel, while still getting what is needed out of the training session.

Episode 537: My Thoughts Monday #181- Jake Jensen- Limitations With Periodization Models
“The predictions that a periodized structure tries to make, based on assumptions of fitness equaling tactical ability, they just don’t work for team sports.”

“If we can get outside of our space, recognize a theory for it’s base assumptions, and then dig into the minds of people who have more perspective, I think that’s something that can allow us to start making progress on chipping away at what transfer looks like and what periodization looks like in teams.”

Jake Jensen rejoins us to discuss some of the history and contemporary practices in the periodization of programming in this weeks My Thoughts Monday. This includes some of the assumptions made by traditional periodization theories, and how those theories that originated in track and field may have limitations in team sport. This leads him to his main thought on periodization, and that is that there are plenty of theories that exist, and with all the new tools we have access to for us to better evaluate and test those theories to better connect between theory and practitioners and drive better conversation to uncover the unknown unknowns.,

Talking monitoring and jump evaluations with Karim Derqaoui in this weeks episode of The Podcast. After a brief run down of how Karim got to Vald, we dive into how being a coach first has impacted how he views the “tech” and the metrics that he utilizes to assess athletes. This includes his three step model that he looks at when discussing monitoring decisions with coaches and athletes. He also shares with us examples of metrics he would look at for athletes in sports, and what those metrics would mean to him and the athlete that he is assessing. Next, Karim discusses the role of collaboration, why he feels it’s so important, and where he’s seen successes and failures with it. Karim is a fantastic resource, not just because of his knowledge, which is world class, but also his experience as a coach make his insight absolutely priceless when it comes to monitoring metrics and how “the team behind the team” can work together to find better ways to be better for their athletes.

I got to sit down and catch up with Chris Hays and talk developing as a coach in this weeks episode of The Podcast. After a quick step by step of how he got to Coppin State, we dive right into how growth doesn’t have to occur because you switch positions, but is something you should be doing where you’re at. He shares with us some of the extra roles he had at Coppin last year, and how he’s been able to maximize his role as a performance coach. Having to do some extraneous work initially at this position has been a huge learning experience for him, and one that he’s taken many positives away from that have helped him become a better. We then shift gears and talk about how his training focus has changed this year because of the pandemic, and what are the driving factors behind it. This includes how lessons learned throughout the pandemic will have a profound impact on his programming decisions moving forward.

I had the pleasure of sitting down to discuss the evolution from an athlete to a coach with Jena Ready in this weeks episode of The Podcast. The conversation starts right out with how she got into training, the role of her first strength coach in her love of the weight room, and how being a student athlete impacted her decision to become a coach. We then discuss the power of being given a chance, and how having the opportunity to be a head coach at a young age really helped us both evolve at a greater pace than we would have expected. We then go into how being involved with a large number of teams was vital to set the groundwork for our ability to dedicate our time to one team and provide more value. We finish off discussing what her experience as a college lacrosse player impacted her in both personally and as a coach.

I share where the idea’s came from, the influence of this COVID pandemic, the importance of residual training effects when developing these summer programs. The chart I referred to is in Block Periodization. I’d love to hear your thoughts on what we are putting together, where you see some pro’s and con’s, and what you’re trying to do to better make your energy system training better?

Episode 532: Episode 279- Guillermo Blanco- Make Them Want To Be There
“I’m not going to train those kids like powerlifters, I’m going to take some principles from the powerlifting side and apply it.”

I had the pleasure of sitting down and discussing training and running a powerlifting team with Guillermo Blanco in this weeks episode of The Podcast. After a run down of how he got to McKendree we roll right into the world of D2 sports, and how there are similarities and differences to both D3 and D1. This leads into a great discussion about what he feels his most important role is in the training process, any why he feels it’s so important. We then discuss the team he is a head coach for, the Powerlifting team. This includes the training and meet program, how that is set up through out the year, and how academics impact this year round sport. Guillermo’s coaching and the uniqueness of a powerlifting team is great insight into how we can work better to develop better training, and even use their “ideas” to provide better means for our athlete’s to improve.

One challenge for strength and conditioning coaches is finding ways to individualize the programming that is both efficient and able to be handled for us in the group setting while still keeping the “team” atmosphere in training. In this weeks My Thoughts Monday I share three different ways we are looking at doing just that, that hopefully can even drive better conversations and more collaboration in the athlete’s general physical preparation phase.

This week I got to sit down and discuss the evolution of training during the pandemic with Michael Kelley. After a quick run down of how he got to Grove City College we dive right into how this unique time has brought them to come up with unique ways to get their athlete’s in to train. This included them moving parts of their weight room to create a second space to accommodate to their 480 student athletes. This includes how the rules in D3 have made it even more challenging, but has also helped identify teams that are truly invested and have better cultures. We then discuss how they bucketed their athletes in different “levels” to allow them to use their different facilities to do the best they could for the athletes. Make sure you give him a follow on IG and Twitter @kelleysmash.
