016 - Mastering the Basics: Why Slowing Down is Essential for Training - with Todd Fletcher

016 - Mastering the Basics: Why Slowing Down is Essential for Training - with Todd Fletcher

On this episode of De-Escalation Conversations, Todd Fletcher talks about the importance of teaching behavior in demos rather than allowing shooting.

Instructors must show all the little things they do to achieve a certain speed or goal and slow down demos so that students can see the pace at which the drill needs to be done.

Firearms instructors are seen as de facto leaders, and their behavior is mimicked by new officers, so strong leadership must be at the base of the pyramid to negate poor leadership at the top.

Additionally, Todd shares personal struggles with preparing for a presentation called Emerson Hour and how he felt relaxed and comfortable in the company of his colleagues.

Lastly, he discusses the importance of moving away from traditional evaluators and drill instructor mode to coaching and teaching to improve hit rates in US and Canadian law enforcement gunfights.

    - Firearms instructors are leaders and set the culture of learning for their department.
     - Strong leadership at the base of the pyramid can negate poor leadership at the top.
     - Instructors aim to have a positive effect on those they train, which has a domino effect on communities.
     - It's important for instructors to practice their craft, strive for continuous improvement, and not let their ego get in the way.
     - Empathy is important for instructors to relate and have patience with struggling students.
     - The Live Fire class focuses on coaching and teaching to improve hit rates in US and Canadian law enforcement gunfights.

014 - The Fallacy of Only One Correct Course of Action in De-Escalation - with Adam Kinakin

014 - The Fallacy of Only One Correct Course of Action in De-Escalation - with Adam Kinakin

On this episode of De-Escalation Conversations podcast, host Kerry Mensior speaks with guest Adam Kinakin about the importance of  De-Escalation tactics in Law Enforcement.

We discuss the connection between appearance and success in personal and professional development, and the totality of circumstances involved in using force. Adam shares a personal experience and emphasizes the need for better education and communication with the public about the challenges of Law Enforcement.

Additionally, we discuss the importance of training and planning for success in high-pressure situations. Later in the episode, they shift focus to the value of collaboration, partnerships, and shared mission and values in achieving social impact. Tune in for insight on  De-Escalation tactics and creating meaningful partnerships.

[00:01:34]  De-Escalation is misunderstood. Communication is crucial, but  De-Escalation involves minimizing harm, and phrasing it as a catch-all term causes confusion.

[00:07:38] Discussion on using scientific data to understand human behavior, including  De-Escalation  and verbal judo techniques. Emphasis on individual variance and need to educate the public on realistic outcomes in Law Enforcement. Importance of Officer appearance and behavior in leaving positive impressions on civilians.

[00:12:46] Appearance and presentation play a vital role in situations such as  De-Escalation scenarios, and officers need to consider every aspect of the circumstance for success.

[00:20:12] Fluid decision-making in training scenarios, with instructors allowing leeway, improves outcomes. Scenarios should not be pass/fail as the world is more complex. Every human being is different, and instructors should let officers make decisions within their understanding.

[00:26:36] Jim was a new Sergeant in a situation with a suspect barricaded in a bathroom with knives; he  De-Escalated  the situation and got the suspect to surrender peacefully.

[00:30:06] Pre-planning and training greatly increase chances of success in dangerous situations, such as combat patrols or law enforcement. Practice and rehearsals are necessary to achieve desired responses. The lesson applies to all situations, including the behavior of new officers.

[00:36:52] Police training budgets are often the first to be cut, leading to outdated restrictions on training hours. Training silos are also a problem, but interleaving techniques can help.

[00:42:10] Trust, values, mission, feasible goals, and ethics are the driving factors of choosing who to work with. Profit is a byproduct of doing the right thing. ILET has a culture of dedicated members with the goal of making the world a better place.

002 - How a Sandwich Saved My Life! (With Leo Petrilli)

    BIO
Leo Petrilli was trapped in an addiction for over four decades, and has been substance free since 2011. He just retired from working in the trenches at the Addiction Recovery Home, where he went for his own recovery.

Today, he is a virtual Train The Trainer for the First Responder Program with The Addictions Academy.  Leo is also a virtual Personal Growth Coach, with the Wellness Coach organization, a Nationally and Internationally Certified Recovery Coach, and an Intervention Professional.

He attends several First Responder virtual recovery meetings, and is a volunteer with Boots on The Ground in Ontario, Canada.

He likes watching good movies, TV shows that make him laugh, and sporting events.

Helping others keeps him sober too.

Q: Many people experience situations requiring de-escalation. What tools have you found to be effective in these situations?

    • 1 on 1s are huge.

    • Holding a Group discussion, where I can make everyone feel safe – so they at least can listen, if they are not ready to share yet. Because, if you can cry for others than you can cry for yourself.

    • I tend to be pretty direct when I am helping someone get to their truths. And if they have to vent some of their emotions I give them some space.

    • You gotta LEO it. Let Everything Out.
