    What we’re Enjoying

Jay finally got to the Disney+ documentary series Behind the Attraction. Season 2 has some cool inclusions such as Indiana Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Disney Parks food. It’s not a boring documentary, and you’re sure to laugh as you learn a little more about the parks. Shua got around to the 2023 Netflix anime “Blue Eye Samurai”. It’s an action packed, graphic, adult story with plenty of Ninja-type action.

    Sci-Fi Saturdays

This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay grudgingly analyzed the 2003 sequel that tried to keep a franchise alive but may have nudged it in the wrong direction. Terminator 3 didn’t quite have the some charm or quality of the first 2, but there are ways to Enjoy it, including skipping the movie and just reading Jay’s article instead. Make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com, now featuring Daredevil Season 1. Plus, you can tune in to  SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU.

    Enjoy Life!

Spring is taking its sweet time getting here. And sometimes during a long winter we start to feel a little sad. Maybe a lot sad. Professionals call this seasonal depression, or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD…No, seriously). There are things you can do to help yourself feel a little better that doctors recommend. We have taken those recommendations and made them appropriate to our lifestyle, sometimes with a retro twist.

    What we’re Enjoying

Shua found a cool YouTube channel that spotlights innovative 3-D printing featuring some really cool inventions by a guy named Ivan Miranda. A guy with a fun personality and some really brilliant solutions to crazy ideas. Jay has been rewatching the Daredevil series and is remembering why he loved season 1 so much.

    Sci-Fi Saturdays

This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay revisited the sequel to the wildly popular Matrix original, Matrix Reloaded (2003). Despite the now dated innovative special effects, it was a really beautiful movie to watch that expanded the Matrix universe in a very unique way.  Make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com, now featuring Daredevil Season 1. Plus, you can tune in to  SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU.

    Enjoy Movies!

In 1984, Michael Douglas was getting into producing and had purchased a script from a waitress he met at Alice’s Restaurant (no, I’m serious!). He tried to get some very popular, handsome, macho actors to play the lead, opposite the up and coming Kathleen Turner. But ultimately he decided he’d just play the hero himself. With Robert Zemeckis at the directing helm, they set out to make a romantic adventure in the jungle. (But not really Columbia, because it was actually too dangerous) It became  a gigantic hit that established Douglas as a strong leading man, put Turner on the road to a string of hits, and gave Zemeckis the ability to create Back to the Future.

Would you give the kidnappers the map or would you go after the jewel? Would you try to romance Joan Wilder? What we’re Enjoying

Jay finally got his letter and is returning to Hogwarts. He has dove wand deep into a rewatch of the wizarding world of Harry Potter. So far it’s been magical. Shua turned on Pixar’s 2023 Elemental and then found a cool making-of video called Good Chemistry: The Story of Elemental, featuring the writer and director Peter Sohn. It had a lot of heart and gave some good insight of where the story idea came from.

    Sci-Fi Saturdays

This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay watched The Core (2003) so you don’t have to. Check out his article breaking down this film that had potential, but just couldn’t fill the hole.  Make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com, now featuring Daredevil Season 1. Enjoy Time Travel!

This Thursday we tack on an extra day to the calendar to catch up with the Earth’s orbit. 2024 is a Leap Year. So Jovial Jay and Shua decided to do a little quantum leaping of their own. We each chose 4 different years that we would visit if there was a little trash in Mr. Fusion. But there are rules to our choices. We are just experiencing these years. We can’t can’t change anything that happened. (We wouldn’t want the TVA on our tails) Check out the show to see why we picked the years we did, and think about how you would navigate the timestream.

    What we’re Enjoying

Shua seems to think he has too much time on his hands because he decided to tackle the entire MCU in timeline order. It’s a big commitment, but after the first couple handful of movies, he is still enjoying it! Jay jumped into a slightly smaller commitment by watching Kevin Costner’s 1990 epic drama Dances With Wolves. Tune in to find out what Jay’s Sioux name is.

    Sci-Fi Saturdays

The last couple weeks have given us two different movies you’ll want to revisit on Sci-Fi Saturdays. S1m0ne has an interesting take on AI and how it could be used in Hollywood. But revisiting this 2002 movie in 2024 gives it a whole different meaning. Plus, Jay breaks down the final Star Trek: The Next Generation movie Star Trek: Nemesis. It may not have been the best Star Trek film, but there were some pretty fascinating performances in it. Make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to  SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua break down each episode of the entire MCU.

    Enjoy Presidents!

As long as there have been movies, we have needed to have someone portray the United States Commander in Chief. A lot of times these leaders weren’t the ones we know from history. Instead, the actor or actress portraying them gets to come up with their own persona. So which ones stood out? What were some of our favorite fictional presidents that gave a good speech, or showed good leadership, or even kicked some butt and saved the day?

    What we’re Enjoying

Jay took Shua’s advice that the new Peacock streaming series Ted was worth the watch. He agrees. It is a funny (and raunchy) story of a boy and his bear. But Seth Macfarlane has given it a heart that really makes you think and care. Shua made his way to the movie theater and saw Jeffrey Wright’s newest film American Fiction. This story, about an author who is disgruntled about the stereotypes of blacks that are portrayed in modern literature.

    Sci-Fi Saturdays

This week Sci-Fi Saturdays shows you some Signs. M. Night Shyamalan’s 2002 alien thriller isn’t a Dead End. The plot seems to be going straight and then takes a Right Turn only and you have to Yield to suspense. Shyamalan’s Uneven Road of movies shouldn’t Stop you from revisiting Signs. Check it out on Sci-Fi Saturdays. He has also been updating locations from Marvel TV and movies, including Echo, the Agents of SHIELD, and Agent Carter series. Play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to  SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua break down each episode of the Echo series and more.

    Enjoy Comic Strips!

Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbes, Garfield…there are so many legendary comic strips that have appeared in the newspaper over the years. Originally intended to sell newspapers, their popularity soared and before too long there were dozens of artists making different varieties of comics. As they evolved we got comics that were silly, timely, political, and Pulitzer Prize winners.

Classic strips from the 50s, like Peanuts, Marmaduke, Dennis the Menace, and more are still published today, either in reruns (not Linus’s brother) or drawn by a new artist.

As the 60s and 70s brought change to the world, the comic pages started reflecting it as well. Timely topics were sometimes presented next to our Beetle Bailey. Pulitzer Prize winning Doonesbury by Gary Trudeau proved that the comics could be important. Spider-Man and Star Wars brought other formats of our entertainment to the comics pages.

And then we got a series of mega stars that blew up the popularity of that beloved illustrated section of the newspaper. Garfield, The Far Side, Bloom County, and Calvin and Hobbes became just a handful of reasons people would pick up the comics in the first place.

How well do you know your comics? Let’s play a game to see if you remember the punch line from the very first published strip from a few classics.

Now that newspapers are going the way of the Dodo, what does the future hold for our beloved strip format? We’re not sure, but we will continue to start the day with a laugh.

Did you grow up reading comics? What were some of your favorites (or ones you avoided)? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Let’s go exploring!” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. What we’re Enjoying

Shua was extremely and pleasantly surprised how incredible the new Seth Macfarlane Ted series is. Crude humor to be sure, but a ton of heart embedded within so many laughs. You can see it on the Peacock network. Jay explored another historical site in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania called the Gettysburg Diorama Museum. It’s a really cool recreation of the famous Civil War battle that gives you a very in-depth look at the soldiers who fought and died there.

    Sci-Fi Saturdays

This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay knows what you’re going to do wrong before you do it because of his precogs. You can find them in the 2002 Steven Spielberg, Tom Cruise movie Minority Report. In addition to being an action packed sci-fi romp, it also had an interesting take on our future. Was it accurate? Check it out on Sci-Fi Saturdays. He has also been updating locations from Marvel TV and movies, including Echo, the Agents of SHIELD, and Agent Carter series. Play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to  SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua break down each episode of the Echo series and more.

    Enjoy Movies!

For more than 50 years Kevin Kline has been making movies in a variety of genres. From his stage beginnings he gave us the Pirate King in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance and showed off his musical chops.

He moved on to some dramatic roles and often starred alongside some other big names like Glenn Close, Jeff Goldblum, and William Hurt in movies like The Big Chill. And a western called Silverado with Kevin Costner, Scott Glenn, Brian Dennehy, and more.

That’s where he met John Cleese and they connected to make the legendary comedy A Fish Called Wanda with Michael Palin and Jamie Lee Curtis. He took home a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for that.

Romantic comedies, dramas, family films, and even cartoon voice overs. Kevin Kline has something for everyone.

Shua has been revisiting the Monsterverse Godzilla movies following his viewing of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. It’s fun to watch our cities get smooshed.

    Sci-Fi Saturdays

This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay tackles Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones. What we’re Enjoying

Timeless Heroes: Harrison Ford and Indiana Jones on Disney+ is a respectful look back at Ford’s career, with a significant spotlight on his most legendary character, Indiana Jones. Shua has been meaning to check this out, but he had no idea just how great it was going to be. Jay dove head first into the new Marvel series Echo. A different take on a Marvel hero and the first of the Spotlight series on Disney+.

    Sci-Fi Saturdays

This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay explores a movie that was market more to a younger audience, but it is good fun for all ages. Clockstoppers (2002) tells the story of a teen that gets access to a watch that can slow time. There’s bad guys of course, and it’s up to the youth of the early 2000’s to save the day! Sounds simple, but it made for a good adventure.

    What we’re Enjoying

Jay has been impressed with the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians series on Disney+. It’s a great adaptation that is true to the first book and seems to be creatively exploring the characters. Shua is listening to Conan himself narrate his own book. Arnold Schwarzenegger shares some motivational life tips with his new book Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life. You may be surprised how useful some of his tips are.

    Sci-Fi Saturdays

This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay goes back (and forward) in time with the 2002 adaptation of the classic HG Wells story The Time Machine, starring Guy Pierce. Although some aspects are changed, it is a pretty good story with some surprisingly good themes. He has also been updating locations from Marvel TV and movies, including the Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter series. Play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to  SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua break down each episode of the Hawkeye series and more.

    Enjoy Movies!

Don’t stop-motion believin’! In 1933 a 13 year old Ray Harryhausen saw the movie King Kong and it forever changed the way we would experience movies. It inspired him to experiment in techniques of stop motion animation that he would continually improve throughout his entire career.

His impressive resume includes classics like Mysterious Island, Jason and the Argonauts, and of course Clash of the Titans. Many of his movies aren’t even remembered for who starred in or directed them, but for Ray’s special effects. His patented Dynamation technique of incorporating his stop motion creatures enhanced all these movies in a way that made you feel like you were part of the dream.

Countless creators were inspired by Ray’s effects, such as Steven Spielberg, Terry Gilliam, Peter Jackson, Tim Burton, and of course the man who carried the mantle, visual effects legend Phil Tippett. Their movies continued to evolve Ray’s techniques including how CGI even works today. We are all indebted to Mr. Harryhausen and are grateful for his work.

Which of Ray Harryhausen’s works do you like? Have you ever made a stop motion movie? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Release the Kraken!” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. What we’re Enjoying

Like many Dr. Who fans, Jay made sure to check out the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Specials starring David Tennant as the good doctor. It ended up being very well done and something we can all Enjoy. Check it out on Disney+. Shua streamed on Prime Video series recommended to him by his daughter called Daisy Jones and the Six. It tells the story of a fictional 70’s rock band and their exploits on the way to stardom. Enjoyable story and GREAT music!

    Sci-Fi Saturdays

This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay revisits the 2001 Steven Spielberg movie A.I. Artificial Intelligence. A good story to begin with, but also themes that seem even more relevant today. Plus, it has a really interesting backstory in how it even got made. Check out his article to see why. He has also been updating locations from Marvel TV and movies, including the Loki series. Play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to  SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua break down each episode of the Hawkeye series and more.

    Enjoy Collectibles!

Earlier this year the classic Brady Bunch house, that had been renovated to look like the actual set, for $3.2 million. Now THAT is an expensive collectible! But this is Enjoy Stuff where we can imagine just about anything. So we made a list of our ultimate collectibles. We chose places to live, iconic vehicles, and just about anything else that there’s no way we could ever possess. But in this scenario even Fantasy Island is up for grabs. So sit back, relax, and fantasize about what you’d put on (or completely around) your collectibles shelf.

What would you collect if anything was possible? First person that emails me with the subject line, “It belongs in a museum” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to EnjoyStuff@RetroZap.com

    What we’re Enjoying

Shua has been enjoying a new novel by John Scalzi called Starter Villain. This one is also narrated by Will Wheaton and tells the story of an man who unexpectedly inherits his uncle's super villain company. Sound weird? Weird enough to check out for sure! Jovial Jay revisited the 1981 Ray Harryhausen classic Clash of the Titans. It was a groundbreaking movie in a lot of ways and a fun watch today.

    Sci-Fi Saturdays

This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay looks back at the 2000 movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger called The 6th Day. Arnold is faced with a clone of himself and all the discomfort that would present. Though it was very en Vogue to feature our nearest planetary neighbor back then, this one may not have entirely hit the mark. The story is a little spoon-fed, but entertaining nonetheless.

    Enjoy Toys!

It’s the time of year when the National Toy Museum picks their Hall of Fame finalists. Once again, some iconic toys have made it into the mix. They even picked one from the Forgotten Five; a group of toys that never seem to quite make it. But here at Enjoy Stuff we believe there are some toys that are no longer around, but also deserve their moment in the spotlight. So we have set up a Discontinued Toy Hall of Fame in our town of EnjoyStufftopia. JovialJay and Shua pick some of their favorite toys from their youth that they would love to see on display.

Do you have a toy that would fit in our Hall of Fame? First person that emails me with the subject line, “It belongs in a museum” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to EnjoyStuff@RetroZap.com

Enjoy Stuff: Frozen Concentrated Orange Juice

Jovial Jay and Shua are Trading Places! It's the 40th anniversary of a classic comedy starring Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy that tells the story of social class, stock markets, and greed. It's beef jerky time on Enjoy Stuff!

In 1983 John Landis created a movie that became more popular than just about anyone thought was possible. It lit fire to the box office and propelled Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy, and Jamie Lee Curtis to stardom. This is Trading Places.

    What we’re Enjoying

Jay finally got around to watching the blockbuster hit Barbie. He was impressed with the story, performances, and messages of the whole thing. Shua likes the new AppleTV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. It’s an interesting take on the Monsterverse which features Wyatt and Kurt Russell playing the same character in different time periods.

    Sci-Fi Saturdays

This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay looks back at the 2000 movie featuring yet another story set on Mars, Red Planet. Though it was very en Vogue to feature our nearest planetary neighbor back then, this one may not have entirely hit the mark. Check out his article to see why. He has also been updating locations from Marvel TV and movies, including the Loki series. Play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to  SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua break down each episode of the Loki series and more.

    Enjoy Movies!

Louis Winthorpe III (Dan Aykroyd) is not the nicest of rich white guys. (Who woulda thunk?) That’s when two other not very nice dudes (or is that Dukes?) decide to make a bet to find out if he is a product of nature or nurture. They destroy his life and put con man Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy) in his place. But things turn around when both men discover the bet. They enlist Louis’s new, prostitute friend Ophelia (Jamie Lee Curtis) and his faithful butler Coleman (Denholm Elliot). It’s a class struggle with Trading Places.

Plus, we pick a few commodities and see what kind of money we would make if we’d held on to them for 40 years.

What’s your Trading Places experience? How much have you made on the stock market? Enjoy Stuff: -ing and Turkeys

It's Thanksgiving in America, which is the time we indulge in lots of turkey! And sometimes those turkeys come in the form of bad movies and TV shows. This week Jovial Jay and Shua talk about some of those turkeys you can enjoy this holiday and what side dishes go well with them.

Turkeys can be fun! Not the gobbling birds or the holiday feast but the kind you can sit down and watch while you groan and laugh. Let’s have a visual Thanksgiving feast with Enjoy Stuff!

    What we’re Enjoying

Shua enjoyed The Marvels and highly recommends it for superhero fans that want to have fun. Great action and themes of family and self-worth. Plus, a few laughs along the way. Jay decided to read a classic Stephen King novel about a family vacation that goes a little awry. Well, The Shining may not be a feel good family story, but it sure is a classic.

    Sci-Fi Saturdays

This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay looks back at the 2000 octogenarian classic Space Cowboys. This realistic Sci-Fi story shows Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland and James Garner returning to space to save all the arrogant young astronauts a thing or two. He has also been updating locations from Marvel TV and movies, including the Loki series. Play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. What we’re Enjoying

Jay finished Spider-Man on the PS5. He had a totally good time with the intricacies of the world that they built. The side quests especially had some emotion. Shua is excited to head to Disneyland with his family this Christmas. In preparation, he’s been watching some videos on YouTube called Provost Park Pass, with fun information and secrets of the parks.

    Sci-Fi Saturdays

This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay watches Battlefield Earth, so you don’t have to. However, the article is waaaaay better than watching the movie, so make sure to check it out. Enjoy Life Day!

It’s time once again to try to achieve the kind of weirdness that we immersed ourselves in back on November 17, 1978. This year we test ourselves on the knowledge of how the people involved felt about being in this…infamous…special. And we cast the classic characters into classic Christmas specials.

    What we’re Enjoying

As Jay finishes up his 31 Days of Horror articles, he found a cool series on Epix called Blumhouse’s Compendium of Horror. It is a great and quick history of horror movies through the years. Shua has been working on his art by watching videos of how to draw Mid Century art. It’s always good to practice your craft.

    31 Days of Horror

This week Jay continues his October horror movie articles on RetroZap.com. Check out his insights on The House on Sorority Row, Leprechaun, Cabin Fever, The Purge, Ghosts of Mars, Saw, Get Out, and Halloween Ends.

    Enjoy Elvira!

You may not know who Cassandra Peterson is, but surely you’ve heard of Elvira. That’s the persona that Peterson created to host a show called Movie Macabre in 1981. But she built up to that career as Mistress of the Dark. Modeling, Dancing, singing in an Italian rock band, even dating Elvis. But once Elvira was out of the box, there was no stopping her. TV, comics, movies, even hosting Halloween parties at public events. She has owned the character and capitalized on the success. So before Halloween, let’s celebrate Elvira!
