Griz Greats: the 20th anniversary of the 2001 national champions

Joe Glenn returned to Montana to take over as Montana's head coach leading into the 2000 season after former head man Mick Dennehy left for the same job at Utah State. Glenn's three-year run at UM is among the best in the history of the school or the Big Sky Conference.

The Grizzlies ran the table in league play and went 13-2 overall in 2000, losing by a field goal to Georgia Southern in the Division I-AA state championship game. That set the table for the following season's run to the national title, a 15-1 campaign that serves as one of the best in the history of UM capped by a 13-6 win over Furman to earn Montana's last national crown. 

Jon Kasper grew up in Montana and was one of Montana's top sports writers from 1993 until 2004 with stops at the Great Falls Tribune and the Missoulian. Kasper covered Griz football in some capacity at the Missoulian from 1994 until 2004, including serving as the head beat writer from 1999 until 2004. He was the go-to source for Griz news and analysis during Montana's run to the 2001 national championship. 

Yohance Humphrey rushed for more than 1,600 yards and 17 touchdowns during his All-American senior year in 2001. But many forget he came to Montana as a defensive back from Eagle River, Alaska. 

The man they call "Yo" is one of the greatest Griz of them all. Listen for his memories of his senior season that culminated in the University of Montana's last national championship.

Etu Molden almost walked out on the Griz football program when he found himself playing safety as a redshirt freshman. Instead, he transformed into one of the most dominant wide receivers in Montana and Big Sky Conference history, finishing his outstanding career with a crescendo. As a senior in 2001, Molden caught 102 passes for more than 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns to help lead Montana to its most recent football national championship.

Dylan McFarland was a NFL Draft pick by the Buffalo Bills in the spring of 2004. Three years earlier as a sophomore, McFarland started blossoming into a star. 

His rise coincided with Montana's run to the 2001 national championship. The Kalispell native was a two-time All-American who went on to play three seasons in the NFL, but the run to the 2001 national title is among his crowning achievements. 

In the latest edition of Griz Greats- the 20th anniversary of the 2001 national champions, All-American safety Vince Huntsberger joins Colter Nuanez to recap his most indelible memories from Montana's last run to the national championship. 

Huntsberger was a two-time All-American and a two-time Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Year, including winning the honor in 2001. That season not only culminated in a national championship but also a Heisman Trophy vote during that 2001 season. 

John Edwards earned the nickname Johnny Montana for his gritty play, solid leadership and exceptional ability to win. Edwards threw for more than 6,000 yards and 46 touchdowns in his Griz career but it was his ability to rise to the occasion when the Griz needed him that most remember. The Griz went 48-9 during Edwards' four years on campus, including 27-4 with him as the starter. 

The Billings West product was a junior quarterback on Montana's 2001 national championship team.
