    Hey Friends & Kin!

Friends and Kin this episode is around a topic that is a recurring theme in my life and it’s something I am actively working on AND THAT’S STAYING PRESENT!!!

I talk in detail about how through therapy I have learned (and I learned it slowly, and truthfully I’m still learning)that there is power and FREEDOM in uncertainty. If you are one who truly believes in a higher power than yourself and you possibly have an understanding of what true faith is - how is it that you really think you are in control of anything? Listen with the intention to take a step back & look at your life - are you living in the present moment? Of course, I share some techniques to help us stay focused on the present and keep us grounded.

Also, Friends & Kin - it’s for the HAND ME MY PURSE GRATITUDE CHALLENGE!!! Will you be joining me for this round? Make sure to listen to episode No. 84 for the details!!! We will be doing our gratitude challenge for 40 DAYS - from March 12th to April 21st. Feel free to also take a listen to the following episodes to get some insight on how we do gratitude challenges around these parts: No. 36 + No. 37 + No. 44. Check those out & get ready because it’s going down - IN A GOOD WAY!!!🤓

Friends and Kin this episode is around a topic that is a recurring theme here on HAND ME MY PURSE. AND THAT’S GRATITUDE!!! Gratitude is the key to the streets. There are so many conversations that I have had about it & I know for a fact, this won’t be the last conversation had on this podcast where I will talk about GRATITUDE. It’s at the very nucleus of so many aspects of our lives!

I enjoyed having this conversation - with myself, and well with you! I went into some thoughts about how grief, stress and just EVERYDAY LIFE has led me to a space where I am a bit off kilter. It’s time for a full on reset. I have named my grief and given it a song! It was nice to change the narrative and shift it a little bit - so that I am not focused on the negative aspects of grief. It is a great conversation about how to switch from grumpy to GRATEFUL. ALSO, IT’S TIME FOR A GRATITUDE CHALLENGE!!!

We will start on March 12th & go until April 21st! I CANNOT WAIT!!! Please please join me! It’s a great time for a reset.

Friends and Kin in this episode I was blessed enough to be in conversation with a Black unicorn, Jonathan McCrory of the National Black Theatre! His story is one of overcoming, perseverance and understanding WHO you are. What an amazing way to close out Black History Month!

In this two part conversation we learn all about my guest. We learn where he comes from, the obstacles and blessings that he navigated during his journey and what he is up to currently. It was a spiritually uplifting conversation that I am truly excited to share with you. Here’s a little bit about Jonathan:

Jonathan McCrory is a Tony Award and Emmy Award nominated producer, 2x Obie Award-winning, Harlem-based artist who has served as Executive Artistic Director at National Black Theatre since 2012 under the leadership of CEO, Sade Lythcott. He has directed numerous professional productions and concerts. He has been acknowledged as an exceptional leader additionally through Craine’s New York Business 2020 Notable LGBTQ Leaders and Executives. In 2013, he was awarded the Emerging Producer Award by the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston Salem, North Carolina, and the Torch Bearer Award by theatrical legend Woodie King Jr. He is a founding member of the collaborative producing organizations Harlem9, Black Theatre Commons, The Jubilee, Next Generation National Network and The Movement Theatre Company. McCrory sits on the National Advisory Committee for Howlround.com and was a member of the original cohort for ArtEquity. A Washington, DC native, McCrory attended the Duke Ellington School of the Arts and New York University’s TISCH School of the Arts.

Enjoy this conversation, as I had such a wonderful time speaking with Jonathan about his life and his work. His story, the work he is doing as well as the work of the National Black Theatre should be something that we know about & THAT, friends & kin is exactly why I am sharing his story with you. Even though, Black History Month is over on the calendar - we should live a life where we strive to learn more and more about our history and the heroes of our communities today.

This episode is one of a three part series of conversations around the culture of dating in the Black community. This series is about looking at some of the shifts in the current climate of dating. Our guest today, my friend Kandis, and I share some personal stories and experiences we have had dating - particularly with dating ONLINE. _________

In the spirit of LOVE & BLACK HISTORY MONTH, I decided to go back into the vault. This episode is a retro conversation from, “The Catalogue”. It is one part of a series of conversations I had with some friends about the culture of dating in the Black Community. My guest Bianca & I discuss the shifts in dating within our community, as we recognize the MAJOR shift is what Bianca calls “THE NEW MONOGAMY”. We discuss some HOT TOPICS such as: polyamory, dating from a place of emotional ego, the conceptual origins of the “Strong Black Woman” & the “Absentee Black Man” and how all of these things created a shift in the way Black men and women engage with one another.

We laugh, dig down into our soul of wonder and get real REAL about some things that may make some folks uncomfortable. We draw on the notion that in order to heal – we have to get to the nucleus of the issue and the only way TO IT is straight THROUGH IT.

Friends and Kin this series has been in the making for a long time! I have been wanting to sit down and speak with a table full of veteran educators for a while. I wanted to discuss the state of education and get a pulse on what they feel is going on. It’s important to me to provide a safe and brave space for people to share their stories with the world - and so I did. In part three the educators & I spoke very candidly about the ways in which they feel hopeful about the next phases of urban education.

I had 7 fellow educators to join me in conversation about what is going on in schools as we know it. We all work in Baltimore City School District - a community riddled with violent crime, trauma (direct trauma, vicarious trauma, generational trauma, etc.), lack and sometimes just flat out hopelessness. Tune in to hear part ONE of a three part series with these open, honest, caring and brilliant educators. Be sure to listen and get ready for parts two & three in the upcoming weeks!

Friends and Kin this episode is very personal for me. I am swiftly approaching the anniversaries of my Grandparents transitioning/leaving the earthly realm & I really do not want to be super sad.  As a result I am seeking out ways to honor them and hold their spirit up. If you’ve listened to this podcast for a while, you already know how close I was to my grandparents. They were my riders. The chose me over and over and over again. They were an integral part of my life just as I was to theirs.

In this episode I dive into how it’s important and the steps to take to create your own experiences around honoring and celebrating your ancestors. Go take a listen and get ready to take some notes if this is something that piques your interest - we are because of them. They deserve to be celebrated…

Friends and Kin HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! Y’all it is 2024… WOW!!! Well, this episode is all about preparing for this new year that is upon us. It’s all about focusing on how to make this year the b best year that we can by being GRATEFUL & remaining in a state of GRATITUDE. Also, by being intentional about how we navigate - from something one would see as minuscule to a major moment or decision. It is such an important aspect of JOY & I don’t think a lot of people really understand that. It’s at the very nucleus of our JOY! And if we are going to be INTENTIONAL about JOY, we must first be INTENTIONAL about being GRATEFUL.

I also dive into how my aunt, my cousin and I pick a word to focus our attention and intentions on each new year. This year my word is DISCIPLINE. Do you do this? It’s so helpful and super intentional. What New Year practices or rituals do you do with your loved ones - or solo?

I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to be in conversation with Marcy DePina, creator + host of the, “SWEET DADDY GRACE” podcast. Who is Sweet Daddy Grace, you ask… Well go back and listen to episode No. 74 and No. 75 before listening to this one, then just sit back and get ready to learn all about the genius that was a millionaire who created the model for the modern day mega church. A Black man (because that’s exactly what he was) from the island country of Cape Verde, West Africa.

Marcy & I have a very candid conversation that flowed like water down a river about this powerfully eccentric man and all of his accomplishments, accolades, scandals and so much more. If you don’t know who he is - trust me, you will know so much more about him after this series about his life and Marcy’s research in creating this podcast. It’s a beautiful conversation and it just might intrigue you enough to go learn something else for yourself!

If you don’t know who he is - trust me, you will know so much more about him after this series about his life and Marcy’s research in creating this podcast. It’s a beautiful conversation and it just might intrigue you enough to go learn something else for yourself!

    ENJOY!

    _________

Friends and Kin this episode is part two of a conversation about SELF-ACCOUNTABILITY. In the last episode or part one of this discussion we talked about that self-accountability is. We discussed what it looks like, smells like and just the flat out truth about what it is at its core. We also touched on what could be at the nucleus of the lack of self-accountability in certain communities. COMMUNITIES BEING ANY GROUPING OF PEOPLE - FAMILIES, FRIEND CIRCLES. I went over in particular how it can sometimes show up in the Black comunity and WHY... Agree or disagree - it happens a lot and there may be reasons associated with that behavior.

In this episode I dive more into how we are going to combat this and stop this behavior. I talk about deflection versus reflection and I share some information I found on Faith Evans’ internet about how not taking self-accountability and deflecting is a form of gaslighting, narcissism and even emotional abuse. Tune in to see how we can all work on being more reflective and focus on being our best self in spite of mistakes and so called “failures” we may experience in life.

HAVE A HAPPY DAY OF GRATITUDE WITH YOUR LOVED ONES. AND IF YOU DON’T HAVE ANY FAMILY OR FRIENDS TO SPEND THE DAY WITH - KNOW YOU ARE LOVED. xoxoxo.

    _________

Friends and Kin this episode is going to ruffle a few feathers. I decided to make it a two part situation. Because it could be heavy - not heavy like the last episode. Not saddening, but a lot to process. Especially when we have to sit in what role we may play in keeping this kind of energy alive in our communities. It’s a LOT to process. Don’t take anything personally, cause everything ain’t about you! Love you!

I am talking about self-accountability AND the role that our cultural norms and communities may play in the lack of self-accountability. I offer another lens to look at the issue, just a different perspective that could be connected to how and why we may sometimes run from owning our active roles and responsibilities in situations we encounter.

Part two will be focused on how to remedy feeling like you cannot just own your behaviors and actions. So be sure to tune in for episode No. 73.

In true HMMP form, let’s figure out how to be better. ❤️

    _________

Friends and Kin this episode is part one of a heavy conversation that I had with my homegirl, Gina of The Bedroom Bartender! We both made a cocktail that was Autumn inspired, even though it’s been toggling between Summertime & Fresh Autumn Chills on the East Coast off and on for the past month.

This is part two of the conversation & it is HEAVY. We talk shop about grief. Gina losing her mom just as the pandemic got settled in its skin and me losing my grandmother at the top of this year. I went to Gina for some support, because that’s what friends do - they seek one another out for support when they can’t figure it out. There are tears, smiles, “aha!” moments and gratitude. Listen and I pray this is a blessing and helpful to someone who, like me doesn’t know what to do amidst their grief. May God bless us. xoxo

This portion of the conversation is relatively light, so part one is fun and you should try to make both of the cocktails that we made. I had a healthy gut version of a Hot Toddy & Gina had some mulled wine! Get a pen and some paper to take notes for the recipes!

Make sure to tune in next week for part two of our conversation… And maybe bring some tissues cause it’s gonna get heavy…. Heavy and helpful!

Taking The Week Off + It's My Birthday - LET'S CELEBRATE!!!

Taking The Week Off + It's My Birthday - LET'S CELEBRATE!!!

Hey there Friends & Kin, it's my 44th birthday week and I am going to Disneyworld! Y'all know I have been navigating some serious grief and seven days before my flight I booked a trip to go away for my birthday. Everybody has a place or a thing that is an instant place of joy for them - if you don't know your place or thing, you'd better identify it.  Mine is DISNEY THEME PARKS and the beach.  I decided to go see Mickey & Minnie - they always know how to make me feel better. There is something about just being in a Disney theme parks, that reminds me of absolute joy and happiness. I recognize some people don't get it, but it's my happy place.
I will be back next week with a really amazing two part conversation with a friend of the show.  Part one is light and fun, part two is heavy and helpful. Part two is RAW. See you all next week and I love you all so much. Happy Birthday to me - have a drink for me! It's a celebration!

No. 69: How Comparison & Competition Is Keeping Us From Joy + Detachment As A Way To Release Insecurity.

    Hey Friends & Kin!

FYI: THIS, JUST LIKE ALL EPISODES OF HAND ME MY PURSE, CONTAINS PROFANITY. THIS PODCAST IS FOR ADULTS AND CONTAINS ADULT CONTENT. Now that we've gotten that out of the way...

    _________

Friends and Kin this episode is a little all over the place but all about how society has it set up to keep us insecure. We live in a world that wants us in a space where we are constantly comparing ourselves with others and feeling that we need to compete with other people. We have to navigate this differently. There needs to be a mindset shift, but this type of transformation does not come easily.

I dive into how ways we can shift our mindset to focus on OURSELVES and the present moment to really enjoy what we have. I talk a lot about how the philosophy of detachment can be helpful in focusing on WHAT REALLY MATTERS - and here’s a hint… IT’S NOT COMPARING OURSELVES WITH SOMEONE ELSE. The real tea is that what matters is how we can be our best self. That helps us to be a better human for the people we love and care about, not for the people that we should not be concerned with. FOCUS ON YOU & COMPETE ONLY WITH YOUR YESTERDAY. xoxox
