Episode #60 - Christine "Lady Unicorn" Reed - "Why are you going from plodder to FKT?"

In this episode, Courtney talks with friend of the show, Christine “Lady Unicorn” Reed. They talk about learning to truly hear your body’s needs while hiking (or doing anything), how a diagnosis of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) has changed her perspective, how we can still engage with and enjoy nature while we are “pushing” and they answer the question: “Why are you going from “plodder” to FKT? (Fastest Known Time)”

    More about Christine:

Christine Reed is a long-distance backpacker and author of the memoir, Alone in Wonderland. She shares her personal journey from sedentary office worker to rugged outdoorswoman in hopes of inspiring others to see something bigger for themselves-- whatever that may be. But also to remind us that a good story is about sharing something real and unfiltered of ourselves and connecting with others. I then traveled to Alabama where I completed the Pinhoti Trail and connected my footsteps to Springer Mountain using the Benton Mckaye Trail. I then went back to the southern terminus of the Pinhoti and started walking south through the Alabama Roadwalk straight into the Florida Trail to Key west florida. Episode #54 Maren "Wizard" Wahle - What is it like to hike internationally?

Episode #54 Maren "Wizard" Wahle - What is it like to hike internationally?

In this episode, Courtney talks with Maren “Wizard” Wahle. They talk about the challenges of hiking in the sun, whether social media documentation is a great idea and they answer the question: What is it like to hike internationally?

    About Maren:

My name is Maren, I'm 28 years old, and I was born and raised in Germany. My parents emigrated to Michigan about 9 years ago; I made the move to join them full-time in February 2021, after finishing my Bachelor's degree in English and German philology at the University of Stuttgart.
Since I didn't quite know what to do with myself yet when I got here, I figured it would be an excellent time to go live in the woods for a while. So, in April 2021, I headed down to Georgia to start my thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. I summited Mount Katahdin on October 2nd - and knew immediately that I wanted to get back out there.
I took a break from long distance trails in 2022 for several reasons, but in February 2023 I got the chance to join some friends from the AT on the Florida Trail - what was supposed to be a little 2 week section hike turned into a 740-mile-5-week adventure. Now I'm back in Michigan and making final preparations to head out for my PCT thru-hike attempt in a few weeks! (And then I guess back to Florida next January to finish up the Florida Trail...?)

Episode #53 - Lee "Boots" Fortune - What is Hike For Healing?

In this episode, Courtney talks with Lee “Boots” Fortune. They discuss the efforts Lee is making to help spread the message that the outdoors is for everyone, his controversial snack choice and they answer the question - What is Hike for Healing?

    About Lee:

“My name is Lee but on the trail, on YouTube, socials, and even at work I am known as Boots (a name I came by honest). I have also been called a LAD (as opposed to LASH) as I routinely hike longer dayhikes (20+ miles). Last year along with my often times hiking partner, Steps, held our first Hike for Healing event in which we successfully completed the Tour de LeConte hiking over 45 miles in less than 24 hours. Through ongoing conversation, lots more interest, and vastly increased participation, we are having a Hike for Healing 2023 in which we will attempt to complete segment 1 of the Mountains to Sea Trail in less than 24 hours. I love my family, I love the outdoors, creating Youtube content, and I love hiking and exploring. I am also a musician of many years (what I actually went to school for), and, as a personal non hiking hobby enjoy making and playing cigar box guitars. :)”

Episode #52 Chris "Roll Tide" Marshburn - "What is it like to work on trail?"

Episode #52 Chris "Roll Tide" Marshburn - "What is it like to work on trail?"

In this episode, Courtney talks with Chris “Roll Tide” Marshburn, a newly minted Ridge Runner for the ATC in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They talk about how Chris came to crave a change from litigation to outdoor adventures, what the hut caretaking system is like in the White Mountains and he answers the question: “What is it like to work on trail?”

    About Chris:

Chris was born in Raleigh, North Carolina and grew up in Central Florida. He is a graduate of Davidson College and the Vanderbilt University School of Law. Chris enjoyed a long and successful legal career in Memphis, Tennessee, first as an assistant district attorney and then doing personal injury defense litigation as staff counsel for two insurance companies. Chris has a son and daughter both in Memphis of which he is very proud as well as a new granddaughter. Though busy with work and family Chris has been an avid hiker and backpacker most of his life, and he has been fortunate to enjoy many of the great outdoors spaces in this country, including long sections of the Appalachian Trail in Georgia, New England and the Great Smoky Mountains. Recently Chris made the decision to take a break from the practice of law and pursue opportunities in outdoor stewardship, a long-held passion. In 2022 Chris served as a backcountry caretaker for the Appalachian Mountain Company in the White National Forest, and was responsible for one of the busiest campsites along the Appalachian Trail. Chris has earned certifications in wilderness first aid and as a Leave No Trace Trainer, and recently became a member of the Smoky Mountain Hiking Club. Chris is thrilled to be serving as the long season Ridgerunner in GSMNP.
