    i want what SHE has

"I want what SHE has" w/ Theresa Lyn Widmann (and formerly Shana Falana) is a weekly live radio show at Radio Kingston in Kingston NY and PODCAST, amplifying women's voices and their stories. We share interviews of women (female identifying humans), seeking to flip the narrative on envy and celebrating the strengths and accomplishments of women we look up to. Women are so often the unsung heroines of a community’s overall health and wellbeing. These women have gifts to share and stories to tell. It's time to listen.

315 Dr. Amy Novatt "GynoCurious" and "Vulva Views"

Today I get to welcome back Dr. Amy Novatt a board certified ob-gyn who generously offered her time in the past for monthly conversations about women's reproductive healthcare. She is now the host of GynoCurious, a program that explores the experience of being an ob-gyn,  the science that guides their practices  and the stories women- cis, trans and nonbinary, have shared with her as they seek health and wellness. Investigating what it means to be a healer and to be healed.

It's not a medical show that tells you how much estrogen you should take or the scientific method used to evaluate data but instead, a conversation about the larger canvas looking at what its like to be a medical professional working with women and how patients experience the world of ob-gyn. Conversations like, what is it like sitting in the exam room with a thin sheet of paper covering your naked body? What has been the impact of a cancer diagnosis? What it is like to go through the menopause? She hopes to talk about our fears, sexual explorations and aging adventures with respect, inquiry and science. For her, knowledge and awareness brings awe, authority and autonomy.

Today we expand upon some of the topics that she's covered on the show like the biological design of women as caretaker, the impact of hormones on life and the lack of external understanding or support for how they impact women, the corporatization of medical care and the problems that ensue, how the medical profession has let down women since it's inception, how to advocate for yourself when it comes to healthcare, and how we need to break the system in order to rebuild it. Whew...

If you have a topic that is a good fit for GynoCurious, be in touch with Dr. Novatt via Radio Free Rhinecliff.

Following our conversation I shared from this article, "Sexism in Medicine: It's Not All in Her Head," and chatted about International Women's Day and the many Virtual Events that are taking place this year.

Lastly, here's your New Moon Report. It's so perfectly anti-patriarchal.

314 Kendra Nicole "Peace & Profits" and Jessica Cingel "Reproductive Psychiatry"

314 Kendra Nicole "Peace & Profits" and Jessica Cingel "Reproductive Psychiatry"

In the first half of today's show I welcome Kendra Nicole, the CEO of Kendra Nicole™️ & The Finance Femme®, and the creator of Scalable Firms™️ and Peace & Profits™️. After graduating from Clemson University (Corporate Finance and Accounting), Kendra quickly moved up the corporate ladder while working for corporations such as GE. This work led her to pursue her love for small business strategy by founding The Finance Femme®, an accounting and fractional CFO firm. Kendra also hosts an exclusive 6 month mentorship/coaching and retreat program called Peace & Profits™️. And her Scalable Firms™️ program where she coaches other accounting and finance professionals on brand and business building. Kendra is a wife, mom, and podcast host.

Today Kendra talks about how to make time for what's important, moving away from profits first, getting clear about what you really want, tending to your taxes year-round so that tax season isn't such a burden, making a money date for yourself, and balancing work and parenting.

    ____________

Joining me in the second half of the show is nurse practitioner Jessica Cingel. After working on an inpatient psychiatric unit and with adults with autism spectrum disorder, Jessica went back to school to pursue her passion for individualized care in pregnancy and reproductive health. As a certified nurse midwife, she's had the honor of guiding individuals and families through life transitions, both joyous and difficult. During her eight years of midwifery practice, she became frustrated with the lack of mental health support available to her clients. Jessica decided that if these services weren’t available, she'd have to create them herself. She returned to school again and obtained licensure as a nurse practitioner in psychiatry. She created Kinship Health to offer help to individuals struggling to balance their mental and emotional health with the needs of their families, careers, and school.

Today Jessica introduces us to reproductive psychiatry, how perinatal mood and anxiety disorders manifest, how to identify them, and why it's important to not ignore it. We also talk about some of the big picture issues around mental health like access to care, where the system is failing folks, cultural complexities, the insurance problems, and where the system is starting to get it right (there's still much work needed though!).

312 Political Parties with Marielena Ferrer

312 Political Parties with Marielena Ferrer

This month's installment of Spirituality and Politics dives into the subject of political parties. Are they still useful or not? Do we actually need them? Are they causing more harm than good? These are the questions Marielena and I wander through on the show with a little help from this article by Katherine Ellison. She's pro political party with lots of reform, and I am feeling pessimistic and say they've got to go! What do you think??? Here are some more thoughts on the subject.

311 Khara Croswaite Brindle "Ruptured Mother-Daughter Relationships"

311 Khara Croswaite Brindle "Ruptured Mother-Daughter Relationships"

Today on the show... Khara Croswaite Brindle is a licensed mental health therapist in private practice in in Denver, Colorado. She holds various roles, including financial therapist, TEDx Speaker, burnout consultant, author, and professor. Her new book is Understanding Ruptured Mother-Daughter Relationships: Guiding the Adult Daughter’s Healing Journey through the Estrangement Energy Cycle (Rowman & Littlefield, July 1, 2023). You can learn more and access a wealth of tools at estrangementenergycycle.com

With as many as 1 in 12 people being estranged from a family member, Khara shares her experience and knowledge gained assisting several female clients through the stages of estrangement. The choice is a challenging one and typically follows an emotional cycle that eventually lessens the grief and leads the adult daughter to discover a new sense of self. While each individual’s journey is unique, therapists, as well as those contemplating or trying to heal from estrangement, can benefit from recognizing the energy cycle of estrangement. Khara talks about the incorrect assumptions that are made about estrangement, the social stigma, how to support someone who is considering or going through estrangement, as well as how to support your children if you are going through the stages of estrangement.

PLUS! We have a little time to talk about burnout and how it became something that she now supports others through. A subject that is right up my alley as ending burnout is an antidote to the patriarchy!

I continue on once our conversations completes to share some info about the Mother Wound that I came across many years ago. It's a fascinating read and contemplation for anyone out there as we're all contributing to it by participating in the patriarchal structures and systems.

Here's the information on the Campaign for Child Care happening in New York State. And here's the article I mentioned about child care in The Cut.

Then we pivot to a Imbolc/Candlemas discussion. If you're local, you can join the Center for Symbolic Studies folks to celebrate this weekend.

I share from a favorite publication, We'Moon to expand the conversation on Imbolc.

In preparation for the Imbolc holiday, I pull three Archetype cards and discuss their meanings: The Ring, The Thread and Aletheia.

Inspired by a doc about the first ladies of hip hop, I play some music in their honor.

Finally, I conclude with my self-care diary. Still jogging, even if it's super slow!

    309 Nancy Furstinger "Catskill Creatures"

    309 Nancy Furstinger "Catskill Creatures"

Nancy Furstinger is the author of nearly 100 books, including many on her favorite topic: animals! She started her writing career in third grade, when her class performed a play she wrote while recovering from chicken pox. Since then, Nancy has been a feature writer for a daily newspaper, a managing editor of trade and consumer magazines, and an editor at two children’s book publishing houses. She shares her home and heart with her partner, big dogs, house rabbits, and a chinchilla (all rescued), and volunteers and fosters pets for several animal organizations. Nancy has been speaking up for animals since she learned to talk, and she hasn't shut up yet! Please adopt, don't shop.

She is the author of CATSKILL CREATURES, a lovely full color children's book offering readers of all ages a fresh and informative introduction to the Catskill area’s native fauna. This book asks, are you curious about the amazing Catskill creatures sharing your back yard? Your wild neighbors star in nature’s outdoor theater, where exciting drama changes with the seasons. Catskill Creatures spotlights fifteen species of wildlife with intriguing facts and dramatic illustrations. Inside these pages you will discover: Who isn’t scared of the skunks stinky spray? What warty secret weapon protects toads? Where prime raccoon real estate is located? When black bears head into their winter dens? Why the little brown bat is nature’s original bug zapper?

A self proclaimed "animal nut," Nancy shares heartfelt and inspiring stories of animals that she's written about over the years. As someone who's life is rooted in compassion, she gives us a glimpse into the local shelter scene and ways you can help take care of our animal friends. As a life long writer, our conversation also touches on how her career has evolved over the years and advice she has for aspiring writers.

She'll be at the Poughkeepsie Children's Book Festival on March 30th and loves visiting and reading at schools and libraries, so get in touch with her directly if you'd like her to visit you!

Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle
of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the
whole of nature in its beauty.

308 Natalie Freihon "People Over Profits"

308 Natalie Freihon "People Over Profits"

Natalie Freihon is the founder of Strange Bird Hospitality which currently encompasses The Orchard Townhouse, Nat's on Bank, Nat's on Bleecker and soon Nat's Mountain House.  Freihon comes to this role with a wealth of experience in the industry, including: General Manager at restaurants Double Crown, Freemans, Peels, and Mercat; Director of Food and Beverage at Ace Hotel New York, overseeing The Breslin and John Dory; and General Manager at Soho House and Ludlow House, where she led the social club’s downtown debut. Originally from Los Angeles, Freihon holds a degree in Sociology from Columbia University. She lives in Greenwich Village with her husband Steve and daughter Bowie.

"I’ve been restauranting for quite some time. Throughout the growth of my career I saw far too frequently what wasn’t working and what I didn’t want in terms of being a hospitality group owner."

That inspired her to want to make some changes and try to be the example.  It’s certainly been difficult since currently there’s no “guidebook” or structure in how to build a company in her vision, plus, well COVID. But! They're getting there through consistent positive choices by putting people over profit.

Today on the show Natalie shares how she got to where she is, including what it was like being a successful woman in a male dominated industry. Plus she let's us in on the newest of the family, a family friendly restaurant/bar/event space and new neighborhood hotspot in Tannersville. They are hosting a Hudson Valleys Movers and Shakers Party, January 18th from 5-7pm so that you all can check out what's happening their and plan your events in this amazing and adaptable space. You can also reach her at natalie@strangebirdhospitality.com

In the second half of the show I talk about Caring Majority Rising, an organization that is also trying to put people first despite the roadblocks in our State government. They have a new bill they are trying to pass to talk the unnecessary and costly middleman out of long term health care, and they are having a training this week for those who want to put the pressure on your reps to pass this vital legislation. Here's the article I read by Michael Solow explaining what all this is about.

And while I sight and call upon the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I do so cautiously acknowledging the points in this article, Codeswitch.

305 Alana Connelly "From Grief to Joy"

305 Alana Connelly "From Grief to Joy"

Alana Connelly has been an intuitive her whole life, and studying the healing arts for over 25 years. She struggled to find her way after her husband passed in his early 40's. Watching someone you love more than life itself leave this world leaves an indescribable pain and loss. After allowing herself the time to feel the overwhelming sadness, she found herself in Bali in a yoga teacher training that didn't go as planned, but it allowed her to reconnect with herself and eventually pursue a path of helping others by opening her own wellness center,  a non-profit bakery to support local women, and a women's artisan co-op. While some projects failed, others succeeded but brought up questions about her life's purpose, who she is, including a lot of self doubt and uncertainties. She found herself sitting with more hurt, anger, sadness and pain, but she knew it was the only way through. She's now living a life that she enjoys and has found happiness again. As a registered vet tech for over 28 years, she's now pursuing a PhD program in clinical psychology with a focus on mind, body and spirit with the hope that she will help others find the joy in life no matter what happens.

Today she shares about allowing herself to sit in the sadness, the hurt, and pain in order to really move through the grief, how a yoga teacher training changed her life and taught her about how the other side of fear is freedom. She's living that freedom today despite life's ups and downs, practicing letting go of expectations and loving herself unconditionally.

Alana recently contributed to a book titled Do More Stupid Things, a book that celebrates those who dare to live outside the lines. These stories will remind you that taking risks and self belief are the key ingredients to magic and miracles. It’s not easy to go against the grain, but as you’ll see in this book, it offers huge rewards for the brave ones willing to "do stupid things."

304 Spirituality and Politics "Resolving Conflict and Learning"

Today Marielena and I wander through various subjects related to Politics and Spirituality... Starting with Pablo Helguera’s Método de Discursos Sociales. How do you resolve conflict? Start with naming the problem to make sure you actually understand it.

This meanders over to my curiosities about Marina Abromovic's Rhythm Series ('73-'74), and themes of the sword, and power over others...

Here's the Article; Education: Why not a race to the top? - that inspires us to think about how to chance education to one focusing on learning to learn, learning to do, learning to live together, learning to be.

What does this bring up? Fear of failure and criticism...Are we all born with resilience? This is a subject for next year... who wants to join in?

Final words from Marielena and Theresa on the end of the year...Marielena suggests some solstice writing on your wishes... and how you can take steps to fulfillment.

Today I follow up on the Archetype Cards we've seen the past few weeks (Sword and Flame) and fold their themes into an end of the year ritual to let go and align with your truth as guided by the Aletheia card. This includes a fun little exercise to cultivate internal love. Here's the playlist that we listened to.

Today on the show I get to chat with Francesca Hoffman, a multi-instrumentalist, singer, event producer and entrepreneur based in Kingston, who is currently in the process of opening her new queer-forward performance venue & bar called Unicorn Bar (formerly The Beverly Lounge).

300 Spirituality and Politics with Marielena Ferrer "Open Mindedness"

300 Spirituality and Politics with Marielena Ferrer "Open Mindedness"

It's Politics and Spirituality with Theresa and Marielena Ferrer. This month we're talking about open mindedness inspired by this NPR article on the same subject. Here's the Implicit Association Test that was mentioned during our conversation. Prior to jumping into this subject we do revisit the subject of money following up from my conversation with Beth Bengtson from Working for Women about their screening of the film $AVVY.

Happy New Moon! Here's the report I read from that was very much aligned with our conversation about open mindedness.

    299 Tracy Sayre "Moonshot Initiative"

    299 Tracy Sayre "Moonshot Initiative"

Today I am joined by Tracy Sayre, co-founder of Moonshot Initiative (formerly Women's Weekend Film Challenge) who helps thousands of women build networks and break down barriers in the film and television industries. Through Moonshot, Tracy has produced nearly 40 short films. She is an award-winning screenwriter and wrote and produced “Lily + Mara” with her writing partner, Caroline Roberts (AP of “The Little Mermaid”), which screened on PBS and had its world premiere at the Rhode Island International Film Festival. Tracy lives in Kingston with her husband and two daughters. She is an avid reader and loves weightlifting.

Tracy shares about how Moonshot Initiative was born and the work they now do including their pilot accelerator program, their signature weekend film challenge, and monthly virtual workshops featuring prominent film and TV professionals. Tracy is a panelist for HERSTORY, an evening of conversation and networking with others in the film and television industry here in the Hudson Valley. It's all taking place on Tuesday, November 7th at 6:30 pm at the Rosendale Theater.

In the spirit of the Moon and because it is my "religion," I share thoughts on our Moon Signs inspired by the book, The Moon Sign Guide by Annabel Gat and then some thoughts about the New Moon from Sarah Faith Gottesdiener's The Moon Book. The New Moon is coming up this Mo(0)nday, so time to start thinking about your ritual!

298 Growing Women's Wealth with Beth Bengtson

298 Growing Women's Wealth with Beth Bengtson

Today I welcome Beth Bengtson from Working for Women back to the show. She catches us up on what they've been up to in supporting their mission to invest capital (dollars and skills) from businesses into nonprofits supporting women who want to enter and stay in the workforce to become financially independent. They are co-hosting a screening of the film $AVVY.  The film dives deep into the complexities surrounding women and money, uncovering the hidden narratives that have influenced our perceptions for generations. Directed by visionary filmmaker Robin Hauser, "$AVVY" is a captivating journey through time, culture, and society, examining the intricate relationship between women and money. From historical accounts that have shaped financial narratives to the unspoken rules that govern our modern world, this film unearths it all.

Related to their upcoming film screening we spend some time talking about the hurdles in moving more wealth to women and why getting it into the hands of women is vital to an equitable and thriving local and global community. The screening is taking place from 5:15pm - 7:15pm* November 15th at Upstate Films, Starr Theater, 6415 Montgomery St, Rhinebeck, NY. *Film screening includes Q& A after Beth Bengtson of Working for Women and Beth Jones of Third Eye Associates, Ltd.

I fill up the remainder of the show talking about the energy of money and how and why to consider working with it in a spiritual way, channeling your inner mystic and calling upon your ancestors to help change your money story and your relationship to it.

Here are the articles I shared and the playlist referenced to get you in the mood for Samhain and a little money magic.

297 Amplifying Peace with Seaira, Shulamit, Kristin, Trinity and Tara

297 Amplifying Peace with Seaira, Shulamit, Kristin, Trinity and Tara

Last week I put out a call, and these women answered. Struck by a recent conversation I had about war vs. peace, I realized the misogyny in the idea of peace - as something naive, weak, emotional and decidedly feminine. So I wanted to double down on my wish for peace and 5 women showed up to help do just that, offering words, sound, meditation, breath, prayer, and love.

First is a meditative guided visualization from the wonderful Seaira O'Brien, multidimensional healer and word alchemist. She is followed by The Great Octave founder, Shulamit Elson who offered her signature Medisounds healing frequencies. Shulamit was on the show in November 2021 talking about grief and sound healing. Also returning to the show is Kristin Moshonas who brought us into our bodies, breath and hearts. She was on the show in May of this year talking about mental health and her work to support it. Trinity joined in studio with her guitar to set the tone for a song she wrote year's ago about love and alchemy. Her sound healing work can be found here. Last but not least is my pal Tara Sanders who's been a return guest several times. Today she guided us through a loving kindness practice sending prayers to ourselves and others. I asked her to mention the details about another event she is involved, HERSTORY: A symposium bringing together five film initiatives in the region that work to empower, celebrate and elevate female-identifying and non-binary folks in the film industry. HUDSY, Moonshot Initiative, Stockade Works, UPWIFT, and the Woodstock Film Festival will each present about their organizations, some of their past work, and the opportunities that each provides to engage with and encourage the continued expansion of diversity in the industry. This event is happening November 7th at the Rosendale Theatre.

I close the show with the Full Moon report, and mention another local happening, a screening of the film $AVVY at Upstate Films in Rhinebeck on Nov. 15th at 5:15pm: This film dives deep into the complexities surrounding women and money, uncovering the hidden narratives that have influenced our perceptions for generations. Directed by visionary filmmaker Robin Hauser, "$AVVY" is a captivating journey through time, culture, and society, examining the intricate relationship between women and money. From historical accounts that have shaped financial narratives to the unspoken rules that govern our modern world, this film unearths it all. Brought to you by Working for Women and Third Eye Associates.

296 Phyllis Hjorth "A year in my Mother's Life" 1924

296 Phyllis Hjorth "A year in my Mother's Life" 1924

This week's show welcomes back Phyllis Hjorth, artist and bodyworker, who shares about her current exhibit, "A year in my Mother's Life" 1924 currently on exhibit at Taste Buds Cafe in Red Hook with an opening reception this Friday, October 20th from 4-6pm. We get a glimpse into Phyllis' mom, and more specifically, the side of her that was often forgotten after having her children. Phyllis shows and shares about a few paintings inspired by her mom's college "yearbook," and then we get a glimpse into Phyllis' life, her study of interconnection, the time she spends at Kunzan Palchen Ling, a Tibetan Monastery in Red Hook, and how she got into bodywork.

My pre-show chat with Warren talks about tips to happiness: confidence, trust the process - letting go, seek out healthy relationships, practice kindness, stay the course...
