    Business Partner. Friend or Foe.

    Business Partner. Friend or Foe.

Which came first the partnership or the friendship? What are the personal and professional impacts..either way? Our guest, Jessica Rhodes & Margy Feldhuhn, share how they co-create together in business and life.

    In this episode:

    • Advantages of having a business partner vs being a solo entrepreneur.
    • What happens to your perspective when you shift from being someone’s employee to being someone’s business partner?
    • Learn 3 reasons why having a business partner can make you a better business owner.
    • Your best friends and business partners. What happens when the sh*t hits the fan at work?
    • How can business partners utilize each others strengths to fill gaps in the weak areas?
    • Why are venture capitalists afraid of partnerships and spouses that work together?
    • Why you should sign a business pre-nup before official business partners?

    Takeaway:

There is no better way to problem solve than to bounce ideas off someone else and get their perspective. If you don't have a business partner then seek out an accountability partner or find other business entrepreneurs in your same industry or of a similar age and exchanges ideas for creative business solutions.

How you feel is not a result of what other people are doing it's all about how you are processing what other people are doing and then internalizing it. Pay attention to you are saying in your head about yourself and about other people. Feelings are not always factual.

Can yoga increase your sex drive?

Spiritual Yoga practices vs Physical Yoga practices or can you do both?

How do you get past the physical challenges if that is what is blocking you?

What is the one important thing to do before you begin a yoga class?

The word YOGA refers to a state of union between body, breath and mind but it also refers to everything we do to connect to that state.

Progress in yoga is to respond to the same situation in a different way.

Everything we do in yoga is a microcosm for life. A field for experimenting for how we live our lives.

    Takeaway:

~ You only need to have 2 things to start a yoga practice. A yoga mat and the willingness to learn

~ You don’t have to be interested in spirituality at all to get the benefits of yoga

~Before you start a yoga class give yourself an opportunity to check in with yourself. Allow yourself to be present

~ Breathe into your challenges. It builds the muscle to do that in all areas of your life

    Embrace Simplicity

    Embrace Simplicity

Living simply is not always easy. It is not a destination it is a journey. Before you even begin to  simplify you will need to identify how you define simple, where your life is complicated and explore why you seek simplicity in the first place.

Humans have the tendency to over complicate the simple.

About 5% to 7% of adults in the U.S. are pursuing some form of voluntary simplicity, according to Gerald Celente, director of the Trends Research Institute in New York.

Simple is relative. Everyone’s definition is different.

You need to know where your life is complicated before you can simplify it.

How do you know when enough is enough?

What does embracing simplicity mean to you?

    Why are you seeking simplicity?

What are some steps large or small you can take to live more simply?

How is your debt load? In a study published in 2000 in the journal Social Science & Medicine, researchers from Ohio State University and the University of Alabama found that people with a high ratio of credit card debt to income were in worse physical health than those with less debt.

    Here’s a thought...

If you are willing to honor the four agreements as outlined by don Miguel Ruiz then your life is immediately more simple.

    Takeaways:

Consolidate emails- Minimize multiple emails by using the Google Apps feature lets you use an alias feature so you can consolidate them.

Purse in a Purse - Ladies, Buy a small purse that holds your cash, credit cards, phone and a lipstick. You can switch purses quickly and make sure you have everything on the go.

Time block your days so all of your in=person or phone meetings are in all on the same day or half of a day and reserve the other day to focus on administrative or other focused work.

In a study published in 2000 in the journal Social Science & Medicine, researchers from Ohio State University and the University of Alabama found that people with a high ratio of credit card debt to income were in worse physical health than those with less debt.

If you don’t have the cash flow – it is a no go.

Can I ask you a question?

Can I ask you a question?

Can I ask you a question?

Traci sits down to do her morning journal and an episode is born! It starts with a conversation with herself and then evolves into a fun experiment for you! Listen as she reads out loud from her journal pages and then proposes...Can I ask you a question?

    IN THIS EPISODE:

I have a thought provoking but fine experiment for you to try. How I came about this experiment was actually a happy accident. You may know that part of my new activities I put it into my schedule this year includes writing and journaling 3 pages every morning before I check my email

This morning when I went to do my page is something fascinating happened and I thought I would share it with you and see if you want to give it a try and see if you've found it to be as insightful as I did. When I do these pages I just sit down and the are completely blank. I just write the first thing that comes to my mind. This morning the first thing that came to my mind was... Can I ask you a question? which is feels a little odd when you're writing that and you're in THE ONLY ONE you're talking to! But I went with it because it was the first thing that came to my mind, right?

I thought I might read you my actual journal entry based on the fact that I prompted myself with...Can I ask you a question. Now, don't get scared about getting inside of my head. It's not as dangerous of a place as you might think! Here we go. I write,

Can I ask you a question? What would happen if you release the fear   of any outcome?

And then did whatever you wanted to do with your time?

     How would you spend it?

Would you still work as much as you do?

Or would you play more? What does play look like to you?

Do you know how to play?

Would you play creatively? like go to a studio and play? Would you make art? Would you paint? Would you make jewelry? Would you put beads on canvas? Would you write what would you write about your experiences?

What is the most profound experience that comes to mind? Is it painful? Has the pain fully healed? How could you heal it further? Can your pain help others avoid pain? Can it help them walk through it more swiftly more thoughtfully with a new perspective?

As pause here. I realize I can see the funnel of what's happening in this most unexpected experience.

My exercise of doing this first brought me back to dead center of an issue I struggle with constantly. How to play was the first thing that came up in the stream of consciousness. Yet as I kept asking myself the questions I expose the layers of what was really most important to me. Where I would spend my time and how I would spend it. What evolved out of the process was I would spend the time creating whether it is writing or art or even strategy in business.

I create with the sole purpose of healing my painful moments or so I can help someone else have a new perspective on their painful experiences or just even to give insight on how to avoid them altogether.

And then…. I realize I AM  doing what my soul craves.

I am using my voice my stories my lessons on this show.

Sharing them on this show which is really what feels like play to me. Problem solved in three pages or less. There you have it!

How you spend your time is probably one of the most important questions you can ask yourself. Second only to... how would you spend it differently?

Taking a look at how you spend it differently presents an area where you could either feel disconnected void or seeking something soothing to heal an avoidance which opens up the question... Why don't you spend your time on this one area you crave so much?  Is it based on fear? What is driving the fear? When you figure out the one thing that you need or want to do more of is also the one thing you do not know how to do. Literally, figuratively, physically, or  emotionally dont know how to do.

    Would you ask for help?

Have you already figured it out. When you think about this does an emotional connection rise up with you and with this new idea that so strong telling you what it is that you want for yourself could this feeling desire craving lead to helping others regardless of the answers that you get from this fine. And trust me and it's fun experience. The most important part of it all is to start asking yourself these questions.

    Well...That's Awkward.

    Well...That's Awkward.

    Well...That's Awkward.

Having those difficult conversations help take care of you, your finances and your friendships!

We teach people how to treat us whether it is in how we run our business, choose our relationships or maintain our boundaries.

There are choices in how we choose to react to other people’s comments and opinions.

A surefire tip on how not to take things personally.

Leave toxic relationships. Don’t try to change them. It won’t work. Period.

What is the one question that shuts down “scope creep”? How would you like to pay for that?

Have you ever considered using a an autoresponder email as a response to all of your emails instead of just using it when you are on vacation?

There are things in relationships that you have to discuss and if you don't discuss them you are opening up yourself to things happen like resentments and expectations which lead to you getting disappointed.

Traci teaches Russ the appropriate way to apologize. HINT: If you use the word ‘but’ after the “I’m Sorry” it negates the apology.

    Takeaways:

    Have the awkward conversation.

Don’t start a project without having the full scope of it.

Even if it is a small change to the scope. Charge the client so you set the precedent at the beginning of the relationship.

If you set specific office hours. Stick to them or other people will not respect them.

    Your Joy Matters!

    Your Joy Matters!

Traci opens up raw, unedited and solo about how her reflections on last year led her to realize how joy matters. YOUR joy matters.

You'll hear true confessions, requests for accountability and how she plans to stay focused on her joy this year.

: [00:00:23] I guess I've been doing a lot of thinking. It's that time of year of course with the whole New Year's kicking off a new year often means reflection and sometimes even big commitments to change. I am not a fan so much of the resolutions but I do find that it is a great time to just take a look at what I can celebrate as accomplishments for the past year and also where I could tweak here and there for improvement. But you know this can be a slippery slope for me I need to be mindful that it's not all about what I can do better but more about recognizing what I did do well and recognizing also some areas where I can open up for more learning more play for sure and most importantly more joy. I think the message that I hear resonating with me in these last end of the year last year and first two weeks of this year so far is that joy matters because really Joy does matter.

: [00:01:37] And this is an awareness which hasn't always come easy for me for several reasons.

: [00:01:41] I think the primary one is I'm almost always focused on thinking about how much YOUR joy matters and it does... it really, really does in fact as you know I've built my business around working with people to help them find sustain and maintain joy in their lives and in their work. But I've also compromised areas of my life in regrettable ways by putting joy of others before my own. Ok… but here's the thing. This was not an act of martyrdom. Oh no. It usually occurred because I was never 100 percent sure where the source of my happiness and fulfillment was actually originating. I would confuse my happiness with feeling successful and most definitely derived fulfillment from the accomplishment that drove the successes. Of course I've had things in my life I've enjoyed. I mean, don't get me wrong but I could never remember exactly what those things were when it came time to actually go out and really enjoy them. The times I did take, as we've talked about a lot on the show, to do something joyful or fun were often tainted by my mind being located somewhere other than where my body was at the moment. But never fear… because my hands were always adept at knowing exactly where my phone was. Russ has often taunted me that if he wants to see a full meltdown then all he needs to do is just have my phone and I guess (True Confessions) he's right.

: [00:03:25] I want to proclaim that most of these challenges are behind me and I feel truthful, sincere and authentic in saying that today as I have reflected on 2017 I recognized real progress. In the past, it was more about the struggle than appreciating the experiences and thank goodness this year was definitely more about the experiences than the struggle to appreciate them. For me this is something to celebrate. It began by finally being able to identify what I liked to do for play. I always talk about, “You have to have awareness before you can have change. In order to have sustainable change you have to have action.” I had to really begin by identifying what it is I even really liked to do, how I like to create and most definitely identify the people I want to play with in creative ways. This meant I needed to show up in personal relationships and the key to that is they needed to be relationships that were not founded on work. That's hard for me because I love my work so much and I love the people I work with and we end up spending so much time together that friendships evolve.

: [00:04:55] In life we need to have friends outside of our jobs and our business. I had to put down the phone to check the e-mail. Then I had to pick it up to reach out which is a little bit of an oxymoron. But if you think about it …you can't reach out unless you reach out and these days phone and text is probably the best way to do that. I had to really manage the balance between using the phone as a technology tool for work but also using it as a lifeline to reach out not only just in terms of challenges or when I was feeling down or upset but also when things were good. You know someone once told me that it's always better to reach out when things are good because you get more comfortable doing that. So then, God forbid if there was anything wrong or that you needed somebody, then you would already be comfortable picking up that 100-pound cement phone. My challenge is if I have to ask for what I needed then I'd actually probably rather die than let you know I need something. But I’m making progress in that area as well.

: [00:06:09] Taking action in these areas has given me the ability to find out what was working for me and what wasn't. But more importantly, it gave me clarity to understand how vital it was, and has been, to keep doing the things that are working. So if you catch up to where I am now? I will say that I give myself a B plus on my 2017 reflection versus my 2018 identifying things for myself that are joyful and goals and things that I want. I say B plus because when I very first went to start the exercise over the New Year holiday, I began with the reflecting and all of a sudden I found myself in this yucky negative place. For example, last year I launched a new program offering in my business. I had a goal that I wanted to get ten new clients in this particular program and just as a reminder to myself more than anything, I just want to say that it was a brand new, never promoted, never executed, never worked on, brand new, stone cold launch of a program that was not my most inexpensive program. In my goal of getting 10 new people I thought it was attainable although I knew it was aggressive.

: [00:07:58] When I'm doing my reflecting I've realized I was actually beating myself up because I didn't get 10 and I did not get 10. I reviewed all the numbers and I realized I got eight.

: [00:08:15] Hello… eight out of ten. And also as a result of getting the new business and working so hard on the new program overall revenues were up seriously like 72 percent or more. I was actually excited and can celebrate the fact that I can access these numbers and calculate these performance increases and increase in the number of business clients because I had actually stayed true to my 2017 goal of having all of my financials, books and things like that all caught up and current as opposed to doing it all at once before taxes. I have to admit has been the case. So shout out to me! I had to celebrate these things. I got eight new clients, my revenue was up and I had all my financials at my fingertips to prove it. I have to say when I was looking at all of this and dove immediately to the negative and then pulled myself out by flipping it and looking at the positive, I could hear a dear friend and mentor’s voice in my head saying, “Hey Traci when you change the way you look at things; the things you look at change.”

: [00:09:37] They certainly did. I encourage you this year to really take a look at the way you look at things. If you're feeling that heavy drudge of I shoulda, woulda, coulda. I didn't but I was gonna then pause in that moment and say, “Hey wait! I did do this or I have done this or I made progress here.” Take a moment to really appreciate in that moment. I will say one of the things I think I took away from the experience that was so valuable was that I have a huge awareness now that in 2018, I don't want to wait until the end of the year to celebrate all that I have accomplished.  I am making and taking time to touch base with myself on a weekly basis. I’m really going to take a look at what I have accomplished and celebrate it. I’m also going to adjust my course by reviewing and staying on track so that it's easier to course correct than it is to go back and have to do a U turn or realize you've jumped off a cliff but it's too late because you've already jumped! I'm going to share with you before we wrap up something you might find interesting and in even if you don't guess what you're going to hear it. J

: [00:11:14] Because I need to say some of the things that I want to be accountable to for myself this year.

: [00:11:23] And I can assure you that if I do these things for myself personally, I am going to show up way better for you this year. And I am so grateful and so appreciative of your support and your listening and your feedback and your comments and all kinds of fun stuff that you do with us when interacting with our show.

: [00:11:47] This year instead of talking about my business goals. I really wanted to take a few minutes and just hit the highlights of some of my personal goals this year and be really accountable for that. As we go throughout the year I can give you updates. Here we go. Probably my biggest and most exciting personal goal this year is that I have committed to training and running a half marathon. I’ve done one before but it's been almost eight years. This year I'm turning 50. March 31st. I'm not really freaked out about 50 but I felt like if I could do the half on April the 15th. Provided that I can sustain my physical well-being. I plan to do that for myself for my fiftieth birthday.

I discovered over the holidays that reading fiction at night was actually really good for me. It helped me decompress and check out and kept me from being on my phone or on Facebook. So I'm going to do more fiction reading at night. No business books, no tips and tricks of social media or how to grow your business. It's all going to be about fiction.

I am going to get all of my health checkups. Yes, I know. Don't judge me. I was very bad about that last year and maybe even the year before… but this year… I'm doing all of the mammograms, colonoscopies and physicals… all those things. Welcome to 50!

I proclaimed that I want to write more handwritten notes and not necessarily just thank you notes but just writing notes to people in general because I just love it so much.

I realized when I got all the holiday cards that is just so fun to get something in the mail that is not a bill. So, I'm going to send out more handwritten.

: [00:13:57] If you want one from me please e-mail us your address at Traci@journeytoThere.com. You can email me there and I will be more than happy to send you a handwritten note.

I want to and I hope this might resonate with you as something for you to do this year. I want to say thank you to myself. As odd as that may sound at first, just think about it. I really want to say thank you to myself because I push myself. I'm hard on myself.  I exhaust myself.

: [00:14:38] I just really, really, really want to recognize and have gratitude for and thank myself for the things that I do for myself in order for me to even be able to do what it is that I do. I love what it is that I do. I'm always full of gratitude to thank others and appreciate others. But this year I'm going to say thank you to myself. It comes down to the fact that 2017 was the year I discovered my joy mattered. And it does. My joy matters and your joy matters. Think about how will you find joy this year.

Show Me the Money! with Brittney Castro

Show Me the Money! with Brittney Castro

    In This Episode:

Money is still the number one subject people don't talk about. It's the last topic in any relationship; whether it's with your husband, wives, significant other or even your friends and family, even your closest loved ones.

Get an education and learn tools so it makes that conversation more easy to have and so you feel more confident having it.

We're all human. We all have money. We all have to learn how to be with money. There's this misconception that if you're facing a money challenge or concern you're the only one going through it.

Financial planning is not an age specific situation. Even if you didn't do this planning from the start in your early 20s you can still rewrite your story.

There's a misconception that you only do financial planning when you have a certain amount of income or a certain amount of assets. It's not true.

Start to see your money as a relationship that you're going to have for the rest of your life. It takes a little pressure off and hopefully a lot of anxiety and stress off the table because you're just going to treat it like any relationship that  goes through ups and downs. You're constantly working on it. How do you improve it?  How do you make it better? We all need to remember it's not the destination it's the journey.

    Takeaway:

Go on a weekly money date. Take time once a week to recap what’s coming in & what’s going out to stay on budget.

Hire somebody you like and trust that you feel can help you execute on your financial goals.

Get over yourself and ask for help if you need it.

    QUOTES

It's your life. It's your money.  It's your responsibility.

How High Performers Really Achieve Personal Success

    In This Episode:

What do successful people have in common? What do they do differently? Do they know something we don’t?

    Live your life unconditionally.

Build up your Emotional Fitness resilience.

Ruts occur when we lose our hunger.

Change your thinking and you change your life

Just take 10 minutes at the end of your day and at the beginning of your day to relish in creativity.

    Possibility Thinking.

Often it’s our thinking—not reality—that keeps us stuck where we are. Dwelling in possibility can also be one of the most exciting ways to spend your time.

    Creative Thinking

Not all thinking needs to produce major results to better your life. Over time, creative thinking can make your days more experimental, fun—and a heck of a lot easier.

    Reflective Thinking

Allow your past learning and experiences to fuel positive, forward momentum.

    Shared Thinking

Are you ever really caught up?

Are you ever really caught up?

Your email is "everyone else's to-do list for you." And if you allow your inbox to set the tone for your day, you're guaranteed to spend a huge chunk of your time on other people's priorities….All I was doing was other people's work all day long, and I never actually got to the things that I wanted to accomplish." - Ashton Kutcher

One recent Pew survey found 80 percent of Millennials sleep with their phones. No wonder then that another poll showed 40 percent of Americans of all ages check their phones within five minutes of waking. By the time they've brushed their teeth, more than 80 percent of people have grabbed their gadgets. And this isn't just the addled and unsuccessful -- another survey found that half of top executives start their day with email.

Psychologist Benjamin P. Hardy suggests a small amount of writing not only in the morning but also before bed, to tap into your subconscious in order to answer some of your life's trickiest and most pressing questions. "This simple routine will help you crystallize where you want to go, and how you will get there.

Many of us confuse being busy with being efficient.

The seduction of busy work. It makes you feel productive.

    Takeaway:

Write everything out on your to do list and pick three to accomplish that day.

The key is not to prioritize what's on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.

    Stephen Covey

Ask yourself. Am I more comfortable staying the in the vision of this successful opportunity? Or am I scared the reality won’t happen?

Schedule time for the busy work. Adhere to it.

    Your Truth vs Your Training

    Your Truth vs Your Training

The New media rules. There are no rules. And if you don't evolve with how things are changing you will get left behind.

Journey to There is throwing down a challenge! There should be a national authentic media day where all of the all of the anchors and all of the co-hosts all of the people on ABC NBC, Fox News and  CNN wake up in the morning, brush their teeth, get in their car go on camera raw and unedited. No Makeup- No Stylists. We dare you to do that!

We are all walking around with too many expectations of people to meet us where we were versus just respecting where they are.

Truth vs Training is so important to break down because whether you're getting ready to be on CNN, do a Facebook video or just walk into a room of peers at church or a movie theater or whatever. We all have a tendency to want to put on this mask of what we think other people feel like we should be like, act like,  walk like and talk like.

A revealing story on how Peter Shankman, founder of HARO (Help A Reporter Out) revealed a huge disappointment to social media and gained 10,000 new followers.

What is your truth vs your training when it comes to showing up for traditions?

How do you respond to those that have non traditional marriages, careers and/or  lifestyles? Are those reactions about them or based on a struggle going on inside of you?

Stand in your truth. Question Everything.

Click here to watch my highly (self- critiqued) interview with Ashley Sanders!

    Takeaway:

Break the traditions that no longer work for you.

    Be willing to inspire change

Really pay attention to the energy of the environment that you're in. If you're going through the motions of something and feel that as a physical experience...Allow yourself to pause in the moment and identify the fact that is your truth. You do not want to be there or in that experience. Remember that feeling for the next time so the next time it  happens you can  make a different decision.

When you're going into any type of situation or redundancy of a tradition or anything that is occurring where you can literally feel the “life being sucked out of you” or that energy drain or just feeling like tired and exhausted. Pay attention to what your circumstances are and your environment is around when that feeling occurs and make a conscious decision not to recreate that scenario again.
