Kill By Kill: Talking Horror Characters One Death At A Time

In each episode, Patrick Hamilton and Gena Radcliffe unpack all the gory details of horror cinema's least discussed topic: the characters. From Friday the 13th to Nightmare on Elm Street and beyond, our mission is to detail each hack, slash, and decapitation in the hopes that a victim's untimely end is just the beginning of the jokes we can make about them.

This Is Spinal Tap (w/ Becky Wilson)

This Is Spinal Tap (w/ Becky Wilson)

*You know our philosophy by now: podcast a good time, all the time! That’s why we’re converting this episode of Kill The Rock Star into a 40th-anniversary celebration of one of our favorite death-filled comedies of all time, THIS IS SPINAL TAP!! Here to help us go to 11 is Returning Champion Becky Wilson!! We’re giving the Tap the full Kill By Kill treatment, breaking down every character’s green skeleton, foil-covered cucumber, Saucy Jack dreams, and ability to get 17 people into a single King Leisure bed!! We go deep into how this seminal mockumentary shaped our sense of humor, the difference between stupid and clever, the Fluffkin and Fleckman effect, and briefly recount the time we were taken to dinner by a self-described “serial killer.” All this, plus the most explosive Choose Your Own Deathventure of all time, so make sure to put Kill By Kill first and “Puppet Show” second as soon as this hits your podcast feed people!!

KBK After Dark: Embrace of the Vampire (w/ BJ Colangelo)

An undying love. A forbidden curse. Some weirdo just hanging out in a college clocktower, negging you in class. That’s right - we’re combining our Vampire series with After Dark to bring you a cornerstone of the “I’m a teen star who wants to be taken seriously” genre in 1995’s EMBRACE OF THE VAMPIRE!! Here to take us to school about this pinnacle of blouse-shedding cinema is writer, co-host of This Ends At Prom, and now Returning Champion BJ Colangelo!! After Patrick apologizes for never being able to pronounce anyone’s last name, we dig into what makes these characters tick: horniness! That’s it. That’s the character trait. Along the way, we talk Red Fang Diaries, awkward neck bites, Draculau Ballet, Jennifer Tilly worship, introduce #GetAnhkd, and dumb nerds who need to make it weird!! All this, plus a net-enhanced version of Choose Your Own Deathventure, and we get another character who is telegraphed as sexy via beret!!

KBK After Dark: The Hitchhiker "Shattered Vows"

The thumb might be out, but don’t take that as approval! We watched the pilot episode of HBO’s THE HITCHHIKER and get taken for a real ride as we talk old-world curses, modern hair helmets, Dune grandmothers, un-sexy step-sister fantasies, and just openly thirst after Bruce Greenwood and his visible dong (look for it)!! All this, plus we bask in the afterglow of post-funeral sex, play a smashingly good game of Choose Your Own Deathventure, and warn against participating in sexy times near talking birds!! Hop in if you dare!!

KBK After Dark: Body of Evidence (w/ Tess Rafferty)

Hear ye, hear ye - sex court is now in session!! The (not quite so) honorable Kill By Kill After Dark presides over a movie that could only legally happen in 1993's BODY OF EVIDENCE!! Here to help us prosecute this case is TV writer and author of the Kat Kelly Mystery series, Tess Rafferty!! As evidence, we present arguments against the idea of berets being sexy, caucasian acupuncturists, nipple clamp confusion, spiking your Afrin, and the best/worst line of the movie, “Have you ever watched animals make love, Frank?” All this, plus BDSM for Beginners, a sensual version of Choose Your Own Deathventure, and the worst court gallery ever gathered on film!! The candlewax is hot and… gosh, we wish the rest of this movie was.

KBK After Dark: The Hitchhiker "Face To Face" (w/ Kay Lynch)

Love is in the air, and revenge is ready to catch a ride as we talk HBO’s “Twilight Zone with boobs” - THE HITCHHIKER! This particular episode of the series was brought to us by the director of the Salem Horror Fest (and Returning Champion), Kay Lynch because it does the impossible: make anyone care about a character in this paper-thin anthology series!! Along the way, we dig into why this TV episode from 1983 has a more nuanced examination of the trans experience than we’ve seen from a lot of media in the last 40 years as we cringe at bra slicing, examine Robert Vaughn’s toupee, crossover with Mission Impossible, worship at the alter of Sybil Danning, and  take up the scalpel with the liquor shakes!! All this, plus we visit exotic Airport Bar, cut up our usual Choose Your Own Deathventure game, and change how you’ll look at pizza for a while!! It’s a real “laugh until you cry” situation for this episode of Kill By Kill: After Dark!!

KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park (w/ Dennis Satterfield & Scot Burklin)

It’s time to crank up the tunes… and FEAR as we bring you the mechanical mayhem that ruined childhoods and explained way too much about one of the biggest bands of the 70s!! You wanted the best, but what you got is KISS MEETS THE PHANTOM OF THE PARK!! Here to help make sense of this rock n roll nightmare are two old friends and Returning Champions, Dennis Satterfield and Scot Burklin (the Inside The Idiot Box podcast)!! Along the way, we talk bad evil plans, assemble a human pyramid riot, ride the Giant Flicking Tongue, consult the film’s very explanatory tie-in novelization, jump on the robot barbershop quartet trend of 1978, and meet the Schmooniversal Schmonsters!! All this, plus we struggle to understand all the KISS band members' power sets and accents, play a robotic version of Choose Your Own Deathventure, and karate fight albino ape robots!! That’s what you thought this movie was about, right? Karate fights with albino ape robots - cause it is.

Kill The Video Star - Rebbie Jackson's Centipede (w/ Megan Sunday)

Kill The Rock Star is back, crawling into your podcast feed like a multi-legged insect through a bathroom window… a real lyrical allusion this song makes in connection to horniness that takes every ounce of our intellectual powers to untangle!! That's right - we're talking Rebbie Jackson's Centipede, and here to help us make sense of it all is Returning Champion Megan Sunday!! Along the way, we talk awkward tour guide spiels, erect cobras, loose tigers, matching cummerbunds, erotic rictus, lightning fingers, and Michael Jackson dedicating this song to “all my mannequin friends,” among many, many other bewildering details!! This Top 25 hit is a little discussed but truly confounding pop artifact that will have you laughing as much as scratching your head and shooting lightning bolts out of your fingertips, so join us, won’t you?

    Graduation Day (w/ Shawn Carter)

Start the clock - you’ve got exactly 30 seconds to remember if you’ve ever heard of 1981’s GRADUATION DAY!! Chances are you might not be familiar with this track and field and roller boogie-obsessed slasher, but after this episode, you’ll be racing to watch it!! Join Patrick and Gena as they welcome comedian Shawn Carter (his album Boston to Bristol is out now!) to help them blow the whistle on the many, many ethics violations the students, teachers, and staff commit as easily as breathing… until they stop! Along the way, we chart Patrick’s personal connection to yet another slasher movie, overload on red herrings, check out some visible erections, see through a girl's locker room window, get defenestrated by a dead body, and witness the rock & roll glory that is "Felony"!! All this, plus some innovative #GetBunked kills, an educational edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure, and we meet our new favorite character: Football Sword!! Don your cap and gown for a truly bonkers motion picture with us today, people!!

    Dracula (1931)

Listen to us… the podcast of the night… what beautiful nonsense we make!! That’s right, we’re sinking our teeth into the movie that we can honestly say started it all - the 1931 Universal Studios classic, DRACULA!! Along the way, we stake our claim on uneven Bela Lugosi impersonations, connect the dots with the Brides and an infamous Ghostbusters BJ, unpack Bram Stoker’s repressed personal history for juicy clues, and Patrick offloads every weird piece of history he learned as a Universal Studios Backlot tour guide about this film!! All that, plus the Van Helsing and Van Halen crossover you’ve always wanted, we expose the beta duck that is Jonathan Harker and play the immortal game Choose Your Own Deathventure!! It's chemistry, heavy metal, and shaggy werewolves. This week, we experiment on Kill The Rock Star with Ozzy Osbourne and his 1983 solo smash, Bark at the Moon!! Along the way, we talk over-enthusiastic microscopy, explore why this one music video believes women, return to our favorite British sanitarium and open several poltergeist doorways. All this plus goth funerals, melting skeletons, and an extended conversation on how the reboot of the Scream franchise is getting absolutely screwed over by its lousy producers!! We’re not out of the cabin yet! That’s right, it’s time to unearth vol. 2 of our analysis of 1981’s THE EVIL DEAD as we dip into the film’s ferocious second half with the help of Returning Champion, the one - the only - Elissa Wagner!! Along the way, we delve into how Ashley transforms into Ash, how Uncle Stephen King helped propel the film into the order cult cannon, explore the endless charms of stop motion monsters, invoke the Dog Police music video, consider bone flutes, and ask whether this group will be getting their cleaning deposit back!! All this, plus an oatmeal drenched-edition of Choose Your Won Deathventure, and we consider how many graves we could really dig in one night!! This week, we explore the mind-numbing horrors of middling-level magic performers as we make The Steve Miller Band’s 1982 hit ABRACADABA reappear before your very ears!! Along the way, we delve into our ambivalence toward Steve Miller and our seething hatred of The Eagles, Miller’s criminally lazy rhyming schemes, ponder the panty styles of angels, and question reports that this video and the main model/actress featured in it are “iconic” in any way. All this, plus bad magic acts, laconic tangos, and the only rat-chicken-baby transition ever filmed!! We’re trying to pull a funny episode out of the hat this week on Kill By Kill!!

    The Evil Dead vol 1

    The Evil Dead vol 1

A cabin in the woods. A group of college friends. And a book in the cellar someone just cannot stop themselves from reading. These are the basic elements that create one of the most lasting horror franchises of all time - and it’s our starting point for Season Five of the Kill By Kill podcast talking about the one, the only, the original - THE EVIL DEAD!! Listen along with us as we crack the flesh-covered spine of the Necronomicon, explore Sudden Oatmeal Syndrome, wonder why a blender somehow makes the trip, unlock the unpredictable elements that make the film so compelling, and learn a new rule: there’s always a La Quinta! All this, plus we recount how much we hate Scott, we resurrect a variation of Choose Your Own Deathventure, and we introduce a new character we like to call “HOA Deadite!” We’re going more in-depth than a Sam Raimi close-up of Bruce Campbell’s monobrow on our first Evil Dead episode of the season!!

CW: This episode does discuss the woodland SA that occurs in the movie. If such conversations are not something you wish to hear about, we suggest skipping that section.

    Michael Jackson's Thriller

Does “the funk of 40,000 years” hold up after four more decades? Let’s find out together as we press play on the grand finale of Season 4 and the mother of all music videos, Michael Jackson’s Thriller!! All this, plus the debut of Choose Your Own ZombieVenture, and stay tuned as we give you the heads up for what’s coming in Season 5 of Kill By Kill!!

John Carpenter's Christine (w/ William Bibbiani)

John Carpenter's Christine (w/ William Bibbiani)

It’s time to get behind the wheel with two Masters of Horror and one of the biggest baddies ever produced from Detroit, MI! That’s right, we’re talking JOHN CARPENTER’S CHRISTINE with critic and Critically Acclaimed Network podcaster, William Bibbiani!! It’s a pedal to the metal show as we go deep on Christine’s insane opening weekend competition in 1983, Stephen King’s embrace and eventual rejection of nostalgia, and how Christine is a vehicle for so many different interpretations!! We hope you’re ready to go for a trip because this extended conversation includes discussion of how oversexed the movie’s characters are, the horrors of friendship, dirty back braces, rejecting Kelly Preston, Uncle Steve’s Greaser Bullies, casting Killdeer, and learning the lessons of Shaking Hands With Danger!! All this, plus a revved-up edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure, and we fondly remember Jim Henson’s Eraserhead Babies!! Take the trip with us today, people!!
