STORYPOWER REQUIRES EFFECTIVE PRACTICE TO MASTER THE ART FORM

“Practice does not make perfect, but it will make permanent. If a speaker, leader, trainer picks up bad habits in their communication style the odds are these habits will stick with them for a while. Practicing the dexterity of vocabulary, enunciation and intonation are critical skills for effective communication. Adding pauses, emotional reflection, and proper pacing in a story bring it to life in a way that narrating the same story cannot. Take the time to rewatch the rehearsal. Listen back to the laugh lines. Reflect on the recollections recounted within your story and ask are they real, right and relevant. Repeating the story 100 times will help you memorize it, but if you are not looking to master these other details a memorized story could still land flat.”

PRACTICING STORIES YOU HAVE LIVED THROUGH SEEMS REDUNDANT - IT IS ESSENTIAL

“It might seem silly to rehearse telling a story you lived through. However, it is far too easy to ad lib when you feel confident no one knows the story like you do. I recently heard a speech where the speech giver quoted some very specific stats and then repeated them later in the speech differently, then said, ‘look it up.’ Even when the details are not publicly verifiable data, there is still a chance you will tell the story again and someone will hear something different. This is only one of many reason you should rehearse, record and replay your own personal stories before taking them to stage.”

STORY MINING: OH THE STORIES WE TELL WHICH SHOULD BE KEPT INSIDE

“So many lessons to learn in life. So many instances of laughter, sadness, revelation, discovery and contemplation with stories worthy of sharing. Many people I coach have a gift of gab, but not the gift of shut up, listen and converse, just gab. They are good with starting a story, filling it with useless details, occupying a load of emotional space and filling time with word salads, but having a genuine conversation seems over the top. I believe part of the problem is, they don’t know WHICH story is relevant in the moment, crucial to the topic at hand, impactful for the audience (1 0r 1,000) and invested in with proper preparation, so they tell them all… as one. The solution is creating an intentional strategy for story mining.”

STORYPOWER - A JOURNEY FROM CLIMAX TO CONCLUSION

“Many people who use stories in their keynote, webinar or teaching employ the story or deploy the story as a mechanism of time filler or solely for entertainment. There is nothing wrong with that strategy per se. However, a story which serves as a connecting tool will likely serve as an illustration, an anecdote, a metaphor or an allegory. When this is the case, the communicator must have an idea where they are leading the audience before the journey begins. WORD CHOICE IN STORIES REVEAL YOUR ATTITUDE AND WORLDVIEW LIKE IT OR NOT

“You might have noticed the moment in a conversation which a the other person chose to use a word or phrase you were not familiar with. Perhaps you asked them to back up and explain or define the word, perhaps you ignored the word while trying to place it through remaining context, perhaps you simply pretended to know the meaning of the word. Often people will hear a word and immediately play a subconscious game of word association while trying to determine how they should feel about the word you just used. This subconscious chatter can be the undoing of the communicator if they are not intentional about their word choice.”

“I am unaware of the origin of the axiom ‘practice make perfect’ however sufficient evidence has been considered to declare in my life it is simply not true. Repeated action does not improve performance if the repeated action is flawed to begin with and no correction is added. Progress can be made when correction is considered then applied but this requires discipline and coach-ability. What has proven true so far is this: you will become what you repeatedly do. Practice poorly or incorrectly and the results will be evident in every aspect of your life.”
