SET THE SCENE OF THE STORY IN A WAY PEOPLE RECALL HAVING BEEN THERE

“Setting the scene is not the same a s painting a word picture but it is very, very close. Take the time to create a space people can recall either from their own past, or at least in their imagination for the length of your story. In theater they call it staging and blocking. Because body language, character positioning and interactions all say more than the words the characters are speaking it is an efficient use of your time. Setting the scene saves words, creates a lasting impression, anchors the story in the memory of your audience and gives your point the stickiness of a traveling seed.”

“Using a story which seems unrelated to connect buyers with sellers is an art form. It doesn’t always happen on the first try. Sometime the story must be reconsidered. Sometimes the redrafted story is powerful at connecting, but not true to the moment nor authentic to the storyteller. This coaching demonstration was live at an event with no previous knowledge or relationship between myself and the participant. The retold story has great aspects to it but there is much more that could be done given more time coaching.”

“If you have ever been in the audience when a masterful communicator uses a well selected and well crafted story, you feel like they have been reading your mail. They seem to have been spying on the secret events and emotions of your life because the story sounds like they are recounting your personal experience. The human experience is not so unique as it turns out. The value buried in the experience is the lesson learned through the pain. A great communicator has learned and rehearsed helping people to recall their pain in search of a solution. Using a well told story they deliver the solution they discovered to overcome the pain of the problem. In the end, the story is not about you, I just includes you as the allegory.”

THE PURPOSE AND POWER OF AN ORIGINAL STORY

“We have all witnessed the person living vicariously through another. Usually its a parent who’s athletic career ended too soon, they have out lived the glory days and need the attention again or they just never measured up to the talent and skill of their kids. Sometimes this vicarious nature comes in leadership by association. A person doesn’t really have the power, knowledge, skills, training but they are close friends with someone who does. Rather than speak of their own less than enthralling life experiences, they tell stories they have heard from others. Often, telling them so many times, they believe them to be their own stories. When discovered this damages credibility beyond repair.”
