MD 301 The Necropolis - Rise of the Vat Spawn (actual play)

Welcome to episode one of Rise of the Vat Spawn! In this episode, our protagonists are birthed from colorful vats before fighting some undead skeletal animals. Dragon Warrior gets stabbed in the guts. Warlock Roc gets sprayed by goo. Bat Alchemist manipulates that same liquid goo to freeze the baddies in places. Tiger Wizard tames a skeletal tiger.

They’re introduced to Anoop, the Marshal of Mummies, and their creator, an undead dragon named Dr. Drecolitch, explains the necropolis they’re in, the city above (Def Jamisus),its political structure, the great dragon wars, and the dragon orbs that he desires.

They fly through the necropolis on Dr. Dracolitch's back to a walled enclave filled with the mutilated exiles of Def Jamisus, learning about how crime is dealt with in Def Jamisus. They return to Dr. Dracolitch’s to heal their wounds, and are introduced to Anoop’s grow room.

MD 300 Session Zero - Rise of the Vat Spawn (actual play)

Welcome to session zero of our season 3 actual play Rise of the Vat Spawn where fantasy and hip hop culture are smashed together to create an epic urban adventure.

Here we'll discuss what to expect for the season, including format, tone, safety tools, and we'll utilize Mad Dungeon words as we have in our previous seasons.

We'll create and introduce the characters (Tiger Wizard, Dragon Warrior, Warlock Roc and Bat Alchemist) using the Mystic Punks RPG system.

Steve gave the team his inspirational Appendix N: Nimona, Arcane, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, She-Ra and The Princesses of Power, Masters of the Universe, Final Fantasy 7, Studio Ghibli, Fist of the North Star, Ill Bill “War is My Destiny” Video, Wild Style, Style Wars (1983 documentary), Altered Carbon, and Hype Williams videos.

Hope you all enjoy this improvised story that we'll create together.

This store has a portcullis separating you from the nugglets, zombie-like living testies that’ll chomp your nards. Hangin’ Brains, the seamstress necromancer, demands that you choose necropants from the rack before she releases the nugglets on you. There’s six styles of necropants made from human skin. They each have distended testicles and magically adhere when you put them on, becoming your skin.

1- Purple-Veined Jeans: They’ll form a coin barrier between your nutsack and the necropants’ nutsack giving you immunity to the bite of the nugglet.

2 - Harem: Made of loose and flabby skin, anyl movement blows the pants open to expose your scrotal region for easy chomping.

3 - Bidol the Sentient Scrotal Sleeve: He’ll editorialize what it thinks about your balls before belting out a “rebel yell” to call over the nugglets.

4 - Necro Booty Shorts: You’re cursed with Titmouse’s irresistible animation.

5 - Kilt of Many Circles: A breezy skirt covered in holes that expose your ballzak.

6 - The Unreliable Codpiece: This platemail codpiece has a lock and key, but it intentionally opens up at the most inopportune times.

SQ 209 PAX Unplugged 2023 Recap

This week we talk about all the fun we had at PAX Unplugged 2023.

Thursday: Andrew set up the Exalted Funeral booth while Steve said hi to Tony Vacinda (Plus One Exp), Pelle Nilsson and Johan Nohr (MÖRK BORG), Brian Colin (Vast Grimm), Jarrett Crader (Space Penguin Ink) and Brian Shutter (Neon Lords of the Toxic Wastelands). Then they both went to a party hosted by 9th Level Games.

Friday: Andrew worked the Exalted Funeral booth while Steve ran Mad Dungeon rooms using OSE: Old School Essentials in the Alexandria RPG Library room. Steve walked the hall and got some time with Joey Royale, the folks at Quest Chest, Craig Cambell (Nerdburger) and Brigette Winter (Psychic Trash Detectives). Steve was able to get in a game of The Walking Dead (Free League) before meeting Andrew at the BackerKit party where we threw axes with Joseph Goodman (Goodman Games), Banana Chan, Jason Furie (Realm Runners), Justin Sorios (Severed Books) & Adam Good and Jamie Perez (Stations - An Infinity of Ships).

Saturday: Steve ran another group through Epic Level Mad Dungeon rooms before meeting Andrew at the Exalted Funeral booth just in time for a signing with artists David Hoskins and Justine Jones. Steve played in Levi Combs (Planet X Games) D&D 1E game exploring his Escape from Skullcano Island adventure. That night they all convened at a party hosted by Kickstarter before a wild night of Karaoke with the entire Exalted Funeral crew, the Mork Borg fellas, Zac Goins (WoGD), Jarrett Crater (Space Penguin Ink), Cassi Mothwin (Clean Spirit, The Sticker Game) who won The Tabletop Award for Rising Star: Designer, and the award’s hosts Wheels & Maddie from Dicebreaker.

Two thin runways are above a 30-foot drop to a magnetic floor. You’re welcomed by the floating Bearbara Grizzelich, a drag performer dressed as a leather-daddy bear. They explain the rules and hand out a ribbon to the victor. Magic ribbons: “Sashay Queen,” 1/day fly 30 feet. “Bear Pride Flag,” 1/day briefly doubles your strength. “Drag-on King,” 1/day briefly boosts your AC.

Sashays & Shields: This ball competition consists of walking like a supermodel down the catwalk in full armor with a shield. Dex checks. Don’t fall. Grizzelich will judge you on dance, beauty and realness. After each walk the loser has one of their three chunks of runway drop away until one falls to their doom.

Dance Houses: Each wall has a viewing booth occupied by the ghosts of previous competitors who now occupy one of the four dance houses: Queen, King, Genderfuck or Camp. Choose a house, and an opposing house’s champion ghost will haunt their respective armor and choose their shield with the longest stream of ribbons to compete against you.

This cathedral has a checkerboard floor, a large chandelier made of stainless steel championship belts, and a boxing ring in the center. Inside of the ring is a coffin containing Eva Slaughter “The Red Reign of Pain,” a yoked goth-girl boxer.

The Devil himself says that if someone doesn’t step up to marry Eva’s ghost, he’ll drag her soul to hell. An eccentric cast of boxing champions stand in a circle around the ring on glowing rune-inscribed tiles giving eulogies. They then look at you to complete the circle.

Ghost Marriage: If you choose to go through this ritual, you’re bound to Eva’s ghost, who rises, dukes up, from the coffin. A wispy ghost ring wraps around your finger, tethering you to your new ghost wife. Burn effigies of money and other items for her to use in the afterlife or she’ll haunt you.

There’s a love triangle between Sluggoth, an elder space-slug deity with a 30’ aura of peace & love radiating from them, Captain Blaarg, an arrogant yet handsome yellow gelatinous creature, and Percival Blorp, a glowing space-skeleton with expressive eyeballs, eyebrows and buck teeth.

This competition cooking show is for the hand of the fair Sluggoth. This royal wedding, broadcasting to the galaxy, is the event of the season. You’ll have time to mingle with the participants before having to choose a side, becoming sous chefs for your champion in this joust of manners and culinary experience.

This cute room has several tiered, levitating platforms where gelatinous flowers are growing. There’s a stable of talking, sarcastic, three-headed riding birds with wings of daggers (to cut the flowers), used to reach the floating platforms. Whoever makes the best edible arrangements between three courses while using the surprise ingredient wins. Sluggoth will judge and crown the winner. The Slug Bishop, a large symbiotic slug on a human host’s head, presides over the show.

This immaculate, gold-plated room has 1d100 gold heads scattered around the floor. Gold fairies are stoned and having a good time. They’re making these heads as macabre costumes, with their head through a hole in the top, arms through the ear holes and their legs coming out of the neck hole. They can fly while wearing the heads. They’ll offer you their fairy weed and try to talk you into the hotbox.

The Hotbox: This phone booth sized box has three chambers. The topmost contains molten gold in a magic crucible above the door. Below that is a chamber large enough for a human to stand in. Once the door is closed, the molten gold is poured over their head. A guillotine mechanism severs the head and contains it in the “head chamber.” A trap door grate opens beneath the chamber, dropping the body down a chute into the compactor pit filled with waist-deep, gold-flecked blood. The walls then compact to turn the corpse into a meat cube, then eaten by an amorphous carrion devourer made primarily of eyeball stalks.

    The Fen
is a mix of nuclear waste and slimy frog skin. Nuclear barrels float next to hundreds of bowling-ball-sized disembodied Frogore eyes that watch you and blink. Supplicants live in huts on long legs that stick out of the water, connected by a network of docks with a canoe for every hut. You can use canoes to reach the five idols, 10-foot stone images that’ve drifted to the center of the lake. You can summon Frogore by either turning them to face the center of the lake, or arrange them in the shape of Frogore.

Frogore: This froghemoth elder god has hundreds of eyes that fall off of its body, and grow back just as fast. If you give it an offering of booze and nuke, Frogore will bless you with its ooze, giving you a mutation. A loot pile of discarded offerings rests at the bottom of the lake.

Mutation chart: 1- prehensile sticky tongue.  2- Grow five bulging eyes that can see underwater. 3- Leap 4x as high. 4- Caustic slime coats your body. 5- Webbed hands & feet. 6- Amphibious.

MD 232 Paper Pirates of the Renegade Heart

All sides of this room are a treasure map. Once you enter the room, the door becomes a drawing as well, trapping you inside. Bones of the people who starved to death before they solved the puzzle or joined the crew line the floor. Only living 3D people can solve the puzzle.

Puzzle: There’s no escape unless you can fix the six jumbled elements hidden within the map. The final jumble is that one wall is too long. You must fold in either side to correct the image and reveal the “X” that the treasure will come out of.

Treasure: The Crown of the Pirate King is a document giving you the legal title of Pirate King that’s folded into a wearable crown, and releases the crew of the Renegade Heart. These 2D pirates living in the walls of the map can only escape the map when someone is crowned the Pirate King. These pirates belong to a massive polycule where they can vote to bring you into the 2D map and poly relationship. Then you must wait for someone else to come by and save you.

MD 231 - Tiny Tarts with Big Hearts

As you enter Tiny Tarts, a romantic restaurant, you’re greeted by a lich maître d' wearing a nametag that says “Tart.” Tart stands at a podium that’s covered in blooming shrink shrooms. They’ll explain the rules of the room, and with your permission, shrink you down with the shrink shrooms’ spore gas. From the podium, you zipline to Shinkland, which looks like a grapefruit hockey puck in the center of the room.

Shrinkland: This crowded, pocket-sized carnival adventure park is quite romantic, but rife with dangers. The zipline lands you in an oversized garden, but be wary of garden mites and living thorny roses. From here you can enjoy the other carnival games: bug wrangling pit, marksman range, flea circus, strawberries big enough to feed 20 people, and a pretzel with jello and pudding in the holes for spicy wrestling. On bad days, rats the size of dragons will attack Shrinkland, devouring everything.

To become unshrunk, you must find someone to be in a consenting, mutually beneficial relationship (that can be aromantic), and leave as a pair holding hands through the Tunnel of Love.

This room is covered in a thick fog. You can’t see more than a foot in front of you. The floor goes uphill and has the pattern of a circuit-board maze of perpendicular lines that the Cyber Sisyphus, a boulder-size orb that glows neon blue, is to be navigated to a concave nest at the top. Each dead end has a floating proximity mine that explodes when the orb gets too close, knocking you back to the starting position. Hiding in the fog is Jack the Hacker, giving instructions on how the room works and mocking your failures.

There are two levers on opposite walls. One moves the orb north/south, and the other east/west. There are two pairs of cyber goggles. One that allows you to see the north/south walls and the other the east/west walls. When the orb moves, it leaves a glowing force field behind it so you can’t backtrack or cross where you’re already gone.

Reward: A combustiboard. This floating hoverboard can jump 20 feet, leaving an explosion that deals blast damage.

Flaming blood drips from the ceiling onto narrow ledges over a pool of fire-blood that’ll stick to you like napalm. Trap! A portcullis drops down in the doorway you came through, cutting you off from escape. The ledges collapse underneath you. Jump!

On a stationary center plinth is orc lawyer Janet Reno Nevada Esquire, wearing a pantsuit with heels. She’s chained to a massive lectern where the Book ov Blood & Fire rests. She’s bleeding fire, yelling her true name and the name of her true love (who’s somewhere nearby). You can heal Janet’s magical wounds to calm her down, but to break the curse you must bring her true love before her.

She wields the oversized Book ov Blood & Fire like a flail to knock you into the pool, or flings pages for a ranged attack. If a page hits you, make a mental save (with a solid debate argument) or suffer The Rules: When you bleed, your blood becomes fire. You must say your true name and the name of your true love. You become cursed if you read from the book.
