MD 228 TacocaT Cafe w/ Matthew Grau (CthulhuTech, Gwar vs. Time, League of Legends)

This week’s guest is Matthew Grau of WildFire Games and we talked about his upcoming CthulhuTech: The Shadow War Quick-Start Rules (V2), working with the scumdogs of the universe to create his deck-building game Gwar vs. Time, his stint at Riot Games building the world of League of Legends, and growing up in the Twin Cities with D&D’s Dave Arneson in his life.

This pleasant cafe’s walls are lined with tables and cat-condos covered in a menagerie of delicious tacos, hot sauce and churros. The proprietors are Keeper, a kindly middle-aged woman who’ll train you to see a TacocaT, and Sage, an old, bearded, zen dude with long hair who’ll teach you to symbiotically bond with a TacocaT. They’re both wearing deer antlers covered in hanging crystals.

To see a TacoCaT, you must clear your mind and think only taco thoughts. When you do, there’s a ton of them. They’re everywhere and it’s cat chaos. They’re pouring out of an interdimensional TacocaT waterfall into a cuddle puddle pool in the center of the room.

A TacocaT is an adorable, squamous, symbiotic dream cat from the elemental plane of tacos. They have hard-taco-shell armor with fur tufts poking out between their plates, a hot-sauce hiss, and excrete delicious churros. When you bond with a TacocaT, they can regurgitate an infinite amount of tacos of whatever variety you can imagine, and they can attach to you to create a full body TacocaT armor. A TacocaT chooses its symbiotic host and bonds for life.

You step into the interior of a slot machine. The floor is an unstable pile of 10-foot diameter wooden nickels. In front of you are three massive wheels that spin vertically every time the giant troll Gorm Gasher puts a new nickel in the slot hundreds of feet above you. Roll a DEX save to avoid being hit by the giant wooden nickel. A sign reads, “Three crowns wins the jackpot!” Wheel symbols: 1) Good-cherries, 2) tooth, 3) sausage nunchucks, 4) numeral 9, 5) eyeball, 6) crown.

The game: Rig the wheels to hit the three crown jackpot, but remember the winning combination on the wheels are facing away from you. When you hit the jackpot, a magic crown prize materializes (1/day summon 4 ninjas or reroll one die). Then the floor opens up. You and the nickels spill into the giant casino’s shag carpet floor, that to you is like a forest.

MD 226 Cauldron of Sadness w/ Gavin Norman (Necrotic Gnome, Dolmenwood, OSE - Old School Essentials)

This week’s guest is Gavin Norman of Necrotic Gnome. We talk about OSE - Old School Essentials, and his incredibly successful Kickstarter campaign for Dolmenwood RPG with Exalted Funeral. The Kickstarter is live now though Sep. 8, 2023.

    --

In the center of the room is the Cauldron of Sadness. It has arms to stir itself and quick legs that dance and leap, yet it never spills a drop. It has a duality of goblin faces on either side. One is the quintessential personification of sadness, the other of happiness.

The game: PCs secretly write down six items that are connected to their past. Designate three as happy and three as sad. These items appear on tables. The cauldron tells you to each choose an item that isn’t your own, and add it to the cauldron. PCs tell the cauldron when they're done adding items.

Resolution: If more sad items were added, it opens a portal of sadness, and sorrow begins to take over the world. If more happy items were added, a portal of happiness. If an equal amount of happy and sad items were added, the cauldron shrinks down and becomes a small pouch. Once a day you may draw from the pouch to pull out a specific item that is meaningful to whoever you’re targeting. Roll a d6: 1-3 the item makes them sad, 4-6 the item makes them happy.

MD 225 Idea Pool w/ Joshua Therrien

This week’s guest is Dragon Warrior and Tiger Wizard’s forever dungeon master Joshua Therrien. We talk about game mastering, preparing to run campaigns and deep diving into world building his campaign settings for The Scouring Campaign, The Wasteland Campaign and The Malagorn Campaign.

    --

Catwalks look down into the Idea Pool where aquatic creatures swim through liquid infinity. Elias Thugburger tells you the rules. Pay him a meaningful memory (lose it forever), and in exchange you may put together a fishing rod and cast it into the Idea Pool. The memory you put in influences what you pull out.

Assemble your fishing rod by choosing one rod, reel, hook and bait. Add up the combined numeric value of the four items: 4) World-enhancing idea. 5-8) Banal idea. 9-11) World-changing idea that spawns a new religion. 12) World-ending idea.

Rods: Corn stalk (1), Harpoon (2), Spine (3)
Reels: Snail (1), Celestial hair (2), Hoof (3)
Hooks: Molten plasma (1), Kraken beak (2), Superglued toenails (3)
Bait: Gummy worms (1), Old boot (2), Photo of your best friend (3)

Cast your line to pull out a fish who whispers the idea in your ear. Once put into the world, this idea spreads like a virus, passing sonically, from mouth to ear to brain, and it never leaves one’s brain.

Citrol the Orang-a-Tang: He was born a glowing star troll, but was cursed to be the tree of memory and thought in the center of this room. The moranges grow from his boughs. He knows which person each fruit is linked to. He has the face of an orangutan-troll in the center of the tree trunk and small, nubby arms to eat his own fruit. Simian trolls catch and feed moranges to their master Citrol.

Moranges: Peeling this feathered fruit reveals meat of glowing, shimmering stars. When picked, wings sprout and they soar around the room. You have to catch it to eat it, earning the right to consume the memories of the multiverse. Eat the fruit and gain +1 on an intelligence stat for 24 hours, and learn the memories of one person.

A juicing machine is hidden away in the corner. If you mix more than one morange and drink the juice, the history of your world changes in a significant way, and for everyone else, the world has always been like this.

In the corner is a titanic skull-shaped wasp hive that has a steady stream of gooey acid pouring from its mouth. Consuming acid from the pool gives you a psychedelic experience. In the hive are horse-sized drones and one queen named Avispa the Wild Child. All of the wasps have tendrils that look like handlebars on their midsections that they use to grapple and attack. Avispa secretes psychedelic acid. If she chooses to sting you, save or transform into a mindless queen wasp.

Stinger Gang: It’s a right of passage for these mutant-biker wasp riders to come here and tame a wasp mount, a “stinger;” but today’s a special day, a wedding. They’re rooting on a member trying to coax the queen out to turn him into a “stinger” so his new wife can ride him as a mount.

This sandy beach has a deep pool of water in the center containing The Locktopus, a large skeletal octopus with bone tentacles that each end in a key numbered 1-8. This is an avatar of the octopus god Godtopus.

The Octobox is submerged 20 feet below the water. When the box is unlocked with a key, it rises out of the water and opens to reveal an octopus salad. The Locktopus says, “It’s the time of judgment. Eat me or be eaten.” If you allow The Locktopus to eat you, go up one level and you’re now a cleric of Godtopus. If you eat the octopus salad, you’re judged and die in d6 days.

Pizza Parlor: There are eight tables set with pizza accouterments. In the center of each table is a pizza sculpture shaped like your favorite pizza mascots.

The Get Haunt-afire Explosion is a two-piece (drums & banjo) animatronic band shaped like large connected pizza slices. They play the song, “That’s Amore” when you enter the room. If you can sever this connection, it’ll un-animate the pizza golems.

Eight 10-foot tall windows, two on each wall, are covered with metal shutters that roll open when the band finishes playing. In the sky is a pizza moon with a face who stares back at you from every window. The moonlight animates the pizza golems. Closing all the shutters renders the pizza golems lifeless.

When you kill an animated pizza golem, it combines with another pizza golem and they double their hit points. When all eight pizza golems are combined, they refer to themself as The Omega Slice.

PAL (someone in the structure acts as if they’ve been your close friend forever). LORE (knowledge of the building’s history). This week’s guest is Keith Matejk of Thunderworks Games. We talk about how you can play Roll Player and Cartographers with big groups of players, and how you can play every Thunderworks game solo. We then dig into the art and gameplay of Goblin Vaults.

Dance Dungeon: Water tubes line massive mirrored walls to power the water wheel torture machine. This device has a lever that goes from “little jig” to “dance machine.” Tethers connect goblins to the machine and Lockwork Goblin.

Lockwork Goblin: A colossal goblin-shaped golem, made of thousands of locks of all types, has exterior ledges and steps to climb it if you’re agile enough. It’s lonely and wants friends, so it violently brainwashes goblins with the machine to be its pal and perform dance numbers. In the center of its torso is a prison cell containing goblins pleading for you to save them. Its forehead contains a vault door that leads to emotional baggage and gold. It has hundreds of scraggly teeth that are one-use magic keys that’ll open any lock.

Dance Goblins: Converted goblins wear red thriller jackets, a lock necklace and are tethered by the head to the Lockwork Goblin. The tether is like an addiction, with strong withdrawals when detached. Rewiring works 100% on goblins, but has a 50% success rate for everyone else.

Dungeon’s Got Talent: This crowded arena has three tiers and a large circular field with a lone microphone in the center. Posters of other champion finalists line the walls. The judges booth juts out from the center of the 2nd level.

Trap: A large cage drops over anyone around the microphone, and minotaurs drench you with bad blood to enrage Nightmare Folklore who emerges from the floor. Fight or out perform the jazz bull to score points with the judges. A minotaur jazz band accompanies the fight from an orchestra pit.

Nightmare Folklore: This giant, intelligent jazz bull has horns like saxophones. “Fighting is like jazz. You have to break tradition.” Timing is important against his sonic attack (damage & save or be deafened), but jazz has variable timing with his hoof stomping (haste or slow effect).

Judges: Matador Dave (the spiritual wizard), Thragg (long retired dungeon delver with sorrowful eyes), and Labyrinth Larry (makes mazes for the local newspaper) each have a red buzzer they hit when they don’t like something. Survive and impress the judges, and they’ll invite you back for the finals. Winner gets a ring of three wishes.
