Pay Equity Now! With Costume Designers Ariyela Wald-Cohain and Whitney Anne Adams

Pay Equity Now! With Costume Designers Ariyela Wald-Cohain and Whitney Anne Adams

Did you know that costume designers, the majority of whom are women, are paid nearly 30 percent less than other, male-dominated creative department heads? Despite costume design being a pivotal part of storytelling in cinema, it has been historically dismissed as “women’s work,” leading to the artisans being underpaid and under-appreciated in their industry.

In this very special episode, we're covering the Pay Equity Now movement! Blaire chats with costume designers and friends of the pod, Ariyela Wald-Cohain and Whitney Anne Adams, who are co-chairs of the Costume Design Guild’s Pay Equity Steering Committee, about this important initiative. Tune in now and learn how to support costume designers' fight for pay parity, because without them, there would be no us! #CDGPayEquity #NakedWithoutUs

Pour yourself a nice cool glass of bathwater because we’re talking about Saltburn today! Blaire and Marie break down the mid-2000s looks of the Catton clan whipped up by costume designer Sophie Canale (Bridgerton S2). We reminisce about our chaotic Facebook and Flickr albums and going to Club Bang. We also debate about skirts with leggings(“Is ‘Toddler Style’ fashion gonna make a comeback?”) discuss Jacob Elordi and his rich rugby jock, Ashton Kutcher-esque look, and praise our new shared style icon, Carrey Mulligan’s Poor Dear Pamela, with her designer goth girl ‘fits.

Dressing Stylish Taiwanese Gangsters with 'The Brothers Sun' Costume Designer Vera Chow

The Brothers Sun hive, rise up! The show’s costume designer, Vera Chow, joins the pod to tell us how she dressed Michelle Yeoh, Justin Chien, Sam Song, and the rest of the cast for the new Netflix series. If you haven’t binge-watched this hilarious, action-packed show yet, it tells the story of a Taiwanese triad gangster who goes to LA to protect his estranged mother and improv-wannabe brother. Vera talks about how growing up in Asia helped prepare her for the gig and how she highlighted API clothing brands and sourced from thrift stores, Chinatown, designers, and Amazon for the characters' looks. She also created custom pieces (including a $6,000 corset belt for a character who dies right away), used tons of symbolism, put in costume design Easter eggs, and so much more for this epic series. Fur Coats and Overalls in Steel Magnolias (1989)

My colors are blush and bashful! We’re ending Dollyuary, our month-long Dolly Parton celebration, with a classic…Steel Magnolias! After having emotional breakdowns from watching this tear-jerker movie, we get into the fashions of these strong southern belles! Costume designer Julie Weiss (Frida, American Beauty) put this deliciously talented crew of women (Dolly Parton, Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, and Olympia Dukakis) in big shoulder pads, cat-eye glasses, fur coats and overalls, and church hats galore! We discuss the alleged Mob Wife trend and thee armadillo cake; Blaire celebrates Ouiser’s (Shirley’s) eccentric Southern Lady glam, and Marie attempts to make Truvee’s (Dolly’s) cuppa cuppa cuppa cake (1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1 fruit cocktail with the syrup). Boudoir Chic and 'Ringmaster Red' in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982)

Boudoir Chic and 'Ringmaster Red' in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982)

Y’all come back now, ya hear? In The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas movie musical, Dolly Parton is Miss Mona, the madam of the local Chicken Ranch, a historic and beloved brothel in a small Texas town. Sheriff Ed Earl (Burt Reynolds) helps out Miss Mona by looking out for the brothel, but the duo runs into trouble when TV personality Melvin Thorpe tries to expose the ranch. Dolly's outfits are a serious boudoir chic feast for the eyes, with ruffles, lace, feathers, sequins, and floor-length “ringmaster red” garments, costumed by the late, great Theodora Van Runkle (Troop Beverly Hills).

As usual, we break down our favorite looks but also discuss Burt Reynold’s hunkdom (and how we’d cast Pedro Pascal in his role for our imaginary remake). There’s also chisme about Dolly and Burt hating each other during filming, so Blaire has a request for Ryan Murphy: to make the next installment of Feud be about their drama!

Office Kimonos and Nameplate Necklaces in 9 to 5 (1980)

Office Kimonos and Nameplate Necklaces in 9 to 5 (1980)

Welcome to Dollyuary! It’s Dolly Parton’s birthday month, so it was only natural that we kick off 2024 by paying homage to our country queen, Dolly Parton! We’re workin’ 9 to 5 and going REAL DEEP on the 1980 film’s costume design by thee Ann Roth. Violet (Lily Tomlin), Judy (Jane Fonda), and Doralee (Dolly) are all coworkers who have HAD it with their sexist jerk of a boss (Dabney Coleman), and things get out of hand after their revenge fantasy goes awry. There are serious layers to the ladies' costumes that you won’t want to miss.

Before we get into the movie, we discuss Stanley cups, Jeremy Allen White’s Calvin Klein campaign, The Iron Claw movie (shoutout to costume designer Jen Starzyk!), and also play a message from a listener with a FAB gym bro vampire suggestion (from our Interview with the Vampire episode, if you recall....). Pastel Macaron Gowns and Converse Easter Eggs in 'Marie Antoinette'

Let ‘em eat cake, baby! To conclude Dunstcember, we’re covering Marie Antoinette, Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film that stars Kirsten Dunst as the controversial (and highly fashionable) Queen of France. Costume designer Milena Canonero won an Oscar for the film and it’s not hard to see why. THE OPULENCE!!! We discuss the pastel Laduree macaron-inspired costumes, the surprise Converse sneaker cameo, and Gwen Stefani's pink ombré wedding gown from 2002, plus our usual favorite looks and what we Add2Cart after watching the movie.

'Seinfield Shirts' and Goth Thumb Talon Rings in Interview With the Vampire (1994)

'Seinfield Shirts' and Goth Thumb Talon Rings in Interview With the Vampire (1994)

“Goodnight, sweet prince. May flights of devils wing you to your rest.” We’ve got Interview With the Vampire on this week’s Dunstcember docket! Costumes are by Sandy Powell (Carol, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Other Boleyn Girl). Blaire educates us on the vampire saga and the toxic relationship between perennial sad boy Louis (Brad Pitt), narcissistic bad-boy Lestat (Tom Cruise), and their adopted daughter Claudia, played by Kirsten Dunst in her breakout role. We get into Sandy's genius costumes, discuss our top looks and Add2Cart picks, and dream about an IWTV reboot with the vampires as two jock-bros and a bitchy podcaster. Bad-Girl Berets and 'Gilmore Girl Aesthetic' in All I Wanna Do (1998)

Up your ziggy with a wa-wa brush! In All I Wanna Do, our girl Kiki Dunst is a rebel at a 1960s all-girls high school with Gaby Hoffman, Monica Keena, Heather Matarazzo, and Rachel Leigh Cook. The girls are part of a secret club called D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Ravioli), in which they share their post-graduation dreams and vow to help each other attain them no matter what. Once the school threatens to become co-ed, the girls decide to take matters into their own hands and raise some hell! The private school looks are retro cute and inspire us to want to wear berets, knee socks, and 60s dresses. Costume design by Ann Hould-Ward and Julie Whitfield! Tune in now!

Cheerleader Uniforms and Punk Band Tees in Bring it On (2000)

Cheerleader Uniforms and Punk Band Tees in Bring it On (2000)

I said, Brrr! It's cold in here! Grab your pom-poms because it's time for Bring it On! For our first film for Dunstcember, we’re discussing this 2000 cheer-com starring Kirsten Dunst as the captain of a high school cheerleading squad who discovers her team’s legacy has all been a lie! Costume design is by the amazing Mary Jane Fort (Mean Girls). We talk about the difference between the Toros’ uniforms and East Compton Clovers’ fashion-forward looks, the Buddha graphic clothing item that was everywhere, Canyon Group robes, and Cliff’s (Jesse Bradford) choice of band shirts. Blaire also educate us on something she calls Food Jail, inspired by a celebrity’s *interesting* food combinations. And Marie guesses the character’s zodiac signs for our Cosmic Costumes segment.

Angsty Teen Goth Style in Ginger Snaps (2000)

Angsty Teen Goth Style in Ginger Snaps (2000)

To finish October, we’re talking about 2000's Ginger Snaps on the pod this week! The film, which Marie describes as the Canadian precursor to Jennifer’s Body, is about two sisters named Ginger and Brigitte who are super close (and super angsty!). One day, Ginger gets her period for the first time, AND bit by a werewolf, and becomes a real ravenous b****! There are a lot of parallels between this and Jennifer's Body, such as the opposites-attract dynamic between the sisters, the blood-hungry transformation, and even the makeover moment reveal that happens during an iconic slow-motion, walking down the hallway scene.

Costume designer Lea Carlson put Ginger and Brigitte in oversized cardigans, maxi skirts, thin choker necklaces, and animal skull jewelry. Forgot Gilmore Girls fall fashion, it’s all about Ginger Snaps werewolf-girl style! We also talk about House of Usher Raymond and the Y2Kills exhibit at Mystic Museum in LA, and we reminisce about going to Universal Studios Halloween Horror Night back in the day. Plus, Blaire makes an excellent case for more 'goth moms' in movies.

The Symbolism of the Color Red in Run Sweetheart Run (2020)

The Symbolism of the Color Red in Run Sweetheart Run (2020)

Keeping with our October whores4horror theme, this episode is on the feminist horror flick Run Sweetheart Run, one of Blaire’s faves! Cherie (Ella Balinska) is a single mom and secretary at an LA law firm who has to go to dinner with her boss’ client. Sure, he may be hot and rich, but he’s actually a bloodthirsty demon who chases her all around the city. Dating in LA is hard! Costume designer Nadine used touches of symbolic red throughout the film and other interesting choices, like a decorated military jacket and karate suits. Other things we discuss? Oh, just the great Hoe Bag vs. Slut Kit debate, men in gray sweatpants, and Blaire reminisces about her interesting night at Schwartz and Sandy’s (for all your Vanderpump peeps). Tune in, now!

'90s Arm Cuffs and Dog Tag Necklaces in I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

'90s Arm Cuffs and Dog Tag Necklaces in I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

What are you waiting for?! The next installment of Marie and Blaire's horror faves for October is "I Know What You Did Last Summer" with costume design by Catherine Adair (Desperate Housewives, Fate: The Winx Saga, Perry Mason). We've already done the sequel (as we sometimes go backward on this here pod), but now is the time to celebrate our Croaker Queen Helen Shivers's (Sarah Michelle Gellar) totally modern cut-out dress and sophisticated New York-inspired 'fits. We also talk about Julie's (Jennifer Love Hewitt) cozy sweaters, crop tops, and Paddington Bear hat, Barry's (Ryan Philippe) preppy sweaters, the '90s trend of dog tag necklaces and military fatigues, and the risks of wearing tons of jewelry when you have a vengeful, hook-swinging killer on the loose. Then for Cosmic Costumes, Marie tries to analyze Helen and Julie's sun signs.

Other topics of discussion include Marie’s week of being Ms. Goop Paltrow, her 24-hour trip to see Lady Gaga sing jazz in Las Vegas, and her psychic medium reading, while Blaire clears up the difference between Timothy Olyphant and Josh Duhamel, and makes a case for all of us to watch a movie called "The VelociPastor."

Murder Robes and Chanel Vamp in Bound (1996) With Special Guest Krista Burton

Writer and author Krista Burton is on the pod to discuss the Wachowskis’ iconic lesbian neo-noir film, Bound! She also tells us all about her incredible new book, Moby Dyke: An Obsessive Quest To Track Down The Last Remaining Lesbian Bars In America, and her experiences traveling the country to write it! Now, for those who haven’t seen Bound, it stars Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly as Corky and Violet, an ex-con and gangster girlfriend respectively, who scheme together steal millions of stashed mob money. The costumes are by the Oscar-winner Lizzy Gardiner (The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Mission Impossible II, Ticket to Paradise), and while there aren’t a ton of looks, they looked DAMN GOOD. We also talk about the legendary Chanel Vamp nail polish, murder robes, Krista playing the jaw harp as a child, and how we’re going to hold a lock-picking party in honor of Corky.
