    10 Truisms for Developing and Delivering Outstanding Presentations

    Love 'em or hate 'em, your basic didactic presentation isn't going anywhere. If you've been asked to give a lecture or talk, or if you're interested in improving talks that you have already developed, this session is for you. Dr. Green discussed 10 truisms that shape the development of outstanding academic presentations, with a focus on how to design presentation materials that facilitate learning. She covered how to communicate content, what visuals to include (or delete), and how to align your presentations with the particular requirements of virtual platforms.

    • Identify "truisms" that shape the development and delivery of outstanding academic presentations

    • Design high-quality slides that focus on learning

An educator by training, and a secret fan of lecturing as a teaching modality, Emily has made her career in medical student and faculty development over the past 20 years. In her current role she oversees the design and delivery of non-clinical professional development initiatives around teaching and learning, diversity and inclusion, faculty wellness, career development, research and scholarship, and leadership skill development.

    How to Give a GREAT Presentation

    Standing on the podium to give a presentation can be a daunting task. Sharing your knowledge and research with a room of strangers is often not easy. Virtual audiences, while perhaps less fear-inspiring, can be even harder to engage. Dr. Glastonbury shared tips on how to conceive and prepare your next presentation and then present so that you can connect with your audience, share your expertise, and enjoy the experience.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Understand the elements of a presentation that make it meaningful and memorable for an audience.
    • Recognize basic slide techniques that ease the cognitive load of your audience.
    • Develop a clear process & also inspiration, for planning their next presentation.

    Presenter: Christine M. Glastonbury, MBBS, is a Professor of Radiology & Biomedical Imaging, Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, and Radiation Oncology at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Glastonbury is a Neuroradiologist with a particular academic and clinical interest Head & Neck (HN) Imaging, and specifically HN cancer. She works closely with the Radiation Oncologists and HN surgeons on a weekly basis to optimize the care of HN cancer patients at UCSF. She has written and published multiple books, more than 130 articles and received multiple awards for teaching, mentoring and for education exhibits at scientific meetings.

    Dr. Glastonbury completed her medical degree and Radiology training at the University of Adelaide and the Royal Adelaide Hospital in South Australia before completing a fellowship at the Hammersmith Hospital in London. She then completed two years of Neuroradiology Fellowship and a year of Body Fellowship at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City before moving to San Francisco in 2001.

    At UCSF Dr. Glastonbury is the Vice-Chair for Academic Affairs and served as interim Chief of Neuroradiology for nearly 4 years until August 2021. She is the director of Mentoring in Radiology, a member of the Radiology Diversity Committee, and a co-founder and strong advocate for UCSF Women in Radiology. Dr. Glastonbury serves on the Executive Council of the American Roentgen Ray Society and on the Executive Committee for the American Society of Head and Neck Radiology where she is also the Treasurer. She is the Program President for the Symposium Neuroradiologicum XXII of the World Federation of Neuroradiological Sciences in May 2022.

    How to Punch-Up Your Presentation Like a Comedy Professional

    Good comedy is unifying and even a small amount in an otherwise dry lecture can make it (and you!) significantly more engaging. Beth Sherman talked about learning how to identify and take advantage of organic comedic opportunities in your presentations. She covered the basic rules of comedy writing, including self-awareness, specificity, breaking patterns, rules of threes, joke structure, and why some words are funnier than others. The ultimate goal isn’t to force comedy or make every presentation hilarious, simply to add a bit of seasoning when and where it will be appreciated most.

    Learning Objectives:
    Upon completion of this activity, participants were be able to:

    • Explore how the addition of authentic humor helps presenters connect more efficiently to their audience.
    • Identify common opportunities for humor in everyday presentations.
    • Apply the basic rules of comedy writing to make the most of comedic opportunities, resulting in a more engaging and effective final product.

    Presenter: Beth Sherman, BA, is a 7-time Emmy Award-winning comedy writer. Her credits include Late Show with David LettermanThe Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, as well as MTV’s Video Music Awards, the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards and the Academy Awards (the Oscars). Prior to that, she spent more than a decade doing stand-up comedy, performing at clubs, colleges and military bases all over world, including Kuwait and Iraq.

    As a speechwriter, she's the founder of "Authentically Funny Speeches," a ghostwriting and coaching service focused on helping non-show business professionals add humor to personal and professional toasts, speeches and presentations.

    The Center for Faculty Development announced the creation of the Office for Senior Faculty Transitions. For the first presentation related to this new office: “Health of your Wealth, Financial check-up for Retirement Preparation.”

    Nora Yousif, Financial Advisor and First Vice President of the Empower Wealth Group at RBC Wealth Management, provided a financial roadmap for those in their 50’s and 60’s to help ensure you are on track for a successful retirement transition. She discussed key insights to help protect the family’s financial well-being, reviewed how to help ensure participants are on track to retire at the targeted age, discussed advanced strategies to help maximize their future social security monthly benefit, review what they need to know as it pertains to Medicare, and point out how to avoid investing pitfalls in light of rising interest rates and a recovering economy.

    Fun Things to do with Kids

    The Parenting Series is an Office for Women’s Careers initiative focused on well-being and work-life balance for MGH faculty and trainee parents. Each session includes a panel of people with lived experience sharing their thoughts and stimulating discussion on a topic relevant to managing parenthood.

    This panel discussion focused on fun things to do with your kids! Anne Fishel, PhD, talked about the importance of mealtimes during the pandemic, how they changed, and what the Family Dinner Project has to offer to help families harness the many nutritional, mental health, and academic benefits of shared mealtimes. Anne Levy, PhD, shared her insights into the experience of reading aloud to her three children before bedtime until they were in middle school - short and then longer books from her children’s, hers, and her parents’ generation. Rana Chudnofsky, MEd, was not recorded, but she shared the essential tools to build resilience and improve your health and quality of life, while helping support your children and teens to learn and practice their own resiliency building skills.

    The Anne Klibanski Visiting Lecture Series was created to support and advance the careers of women. These lectures bring together faculty from institutions that have hosted Anne Klibanski Scholars with MGH scholars, on topics that overlap both research areas.

    Yolanda Bryce, MD, Director of Interventional Radiology Training Program, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center presented on “Cryoablation of Breast Cancer”

    Learning Objectives:
    Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

    • Recognize the advantages of digital breast tomosynthesis and contrast-enhanced mammography over conventional digital 2D mammography.
    • Review interpretive and noninterpretive artificial intelligence applications for breast imaging.
    • Discuss justifications and approach for cryoablation of breast cancer.
    • Describe a potential role of cryoablation in boosting immune response.
