Mind Yo' Business S7:E2 - The Business of Elevating a Sport, Friaring, and the Franciscan Mission

Mind Yo' Business S7:E2 - The Business of Elevating a Sport, Friaring, and the Franciscan Mission

Your Podcast Master, Andrew Lambert, brought another special guest into the studio for our February episode of Mind Yo Business. Not only is Friar Gabriel a Brother in the Fransican Church, he likes to shred on his skateboard and had a lot to share with us!

Friar Gabriel, formerly known as Brandon, was born in New Hampshire and was raised Catholic with his brothers and sisters both there and, later, in Virginia Beach. He recalls the moment he found skateboarding “at the bottom of a mountain on a gravel driveway”. Since taking his vows and becoming a Franciscan Friar of the Immaculate (FFI), he has devoted his time to traveling the country and sharing the gospel message through skateboarding.

He shares a story about his time in Australia when he steered a young man in the right direction, he discusses two Bloomington skater extraordinaires who he sees as elevating the sport, and Andrew and Brother Gabriel discuss the stereotypes surrounding skate culture and how Brother Gabriel is working to change that.

This episode begins in a unique way and ends with a typical discussion of Lambert Rolls. Brother Gabriel gives Lambert Cafe a seal of approval for throwing bread at patrons. Don’t miss this great conversation!

Mind Yo' Business S7:E1 - The Business of Long-Term Care, Caring About Others, and Enjoying Your Life
The Pritchett Brothers Studio was so excited to welcome the wonderful Heather Kinderthain as our first guest of the season.

Her high energy and positive outlook were a great way to take on the topic of getting older.

As owner of Simplified Eldercare, Heather has experienced life through the eyes of many clients who end up in retirement homes.  Her love for people and desire to have them live long and happy lives, Heather shares stories ranging from why we're scared of death, what we can do to stay active until our bodies slow, and how your loved ones are impacted by the challenges of aging.

With some great stories of living in England to learning more about her adoption and subsequent meeting of her biological parents to why she continues to care for the aging population, this episode is filled with heart and enthusiasm.   Heather also tries Magic Mind, talks about throwing rolls (while throwing bread at the podcast master), and talks about why the red haired Lambert (from the Witcher series) might just be the hero we're all looking for in today's age!

Mind Yo' Business S6:E12 - The Business of Event Planning, Game Creating, and Pop Culture

For the final episode of Season 6 of Mind Yo Business, your Podcast Master invited Josh Johnson into the studio. Josh Johnson is a well-known name throughout Bloomington, and for good reason!

Josh grew up in Cicero, Indiana, and like many others who have made Bloomington their home, made his way south to attend Indiana University for Communications. After graduating, he worked for over a decade as a venue manager and booker for places such as Uncle Festers, Second Story, and more. We got an attorney on the line so Josh could share with us some insight into an experience he had with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Leon Russell. After leaving that scene, Josh began running his company Mid By Midwest, Bloomington Pub Quiz, and serving the Board for MidWay Music Speaks. He tells us about what it is like to be a self-employed game creator, writer, event planner, and host.

The episode concludes with a turning of the tables and Josh asks Andrew some trivia questions. Does Andrew have what it takes to conquer the Christmas pop culture quiz?? This conversation was a great wrap to another fantastic year of the Mind Yo Business podcast. Don’t miss out!

Mind Yo' Business S6:E11 - The Business of Helping Others, Insurance, and Bass Fishing

For the November episode of Season 6, Andrew Lambert welcomed Brandon Barrett into the studio for another great conversation. Stuffed with turkey and enjoying the holiday season, this conversation was one for the books!

Brandon Barrett was born in Solsberry, IN, and moved to Bloomington at the age of fourteen when his dad took a position as a police officer. After graduating from high school, Brandon joined the Marine Corps (oorah!) and held the position of machine gunner while stationed at the reserves in Terre Haute. He shares how after leaving the Marines, he ended up working in the energy biz, which ultimately brought him where he is today.

Brandon shares how his time with the energy company taught him to look out for the interests of others, why the best way to get publicity is to help others, and why he is so successful at running the Barrett Agency - Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance.

There is also a fun conversation about competitive fishing and a side hustle Brandon has had going for several years now. Don’t miss out on this great episode!

Mind Yo' Business S6:E10 - The Business of Basketball, Finding Yourself Without It, and Coming Back

Mind Yo' Business S6:E10 - The Business of Basketball, Finding Yourself Without It, and Coming Back

For our October episode of Mind Yo’ Business, we welcomed Collin Hartman into the studio. Not only is he an Indiana University Alumni, graduating with a degree in Business Management, but he was on the IU Men’s Basketball team as the small forward from 2013-2018. We couldn’t get Coach Woodson into the studio, so we got the next best thing!

Born into a farm family in Nebraska, Collin shares how they made their way over to the south side of Indy and eventually to the Fishers area. In one of our craziest stories, he tells us how he was recruited to Purdue University and Indiana University to play college basketball on a full ride in EIGHTH GRADE!

Collin tells us about some of the struggles he faced while playing as an IU Hoosier, including a major knee surgery that had fans requesting he transfer. He shares how he overcame that and ended his time at IU on a very high, high note!

The episode takes a more serious tone as Collin shares about his journey after college and after leaving the basketball court. He shares about the struggle of finding an identity after leaving the basketball world, having played basketball since he was a kid.

Collin tells us about the different financial companies he worked for and transitions into what he does currently.

Collin currently works for Hoosier Connect as the Vice President of Partnerships.

Hoosier Connect is the organization that works with student-athletes to navigate NIL and helps them make money from their name and image as a college athlete.

He shares with us how he got into that career and the impact he is able to make in his position. Collin even tells us how he feels as a former athlete who was not able to take advantage of his “celebrity”.

Chuck Crabb makes his way into this episode, baby Hartman number two gets an honorable mention, and we end the episode with Collin rubbing in our faces that he only has LinkedIn as his sole social media account (honestly, quite the accomplishment!)

This is an episode for sports lovers, student advocates, and business-minded individuals alike.

Mind Yo' Business S6:E9 - The Business of Being Behind the Scenes, Climbing Things No One Else Wants To, and Operating a Small Business

For the September episode of Mind Your Business, Podcast Master Andrew Lambert welcomed Tyler Delong into the McKee Financial Studio for a great conversation! Tyler Delong is the owner of Delong Rigging Solutions, and this type of rigging does not involve construction sites or large ships.

Tyler grew up in Bloomington, across the country, and around the globe. While Bloomington was always where he sent his mail, he grew up following his dad on tours for groups like KISS where his dad worked as a rigger. These experiences led to him making the decision at a very young age that he was also going to be a rigger when he grew up. He earned his BA in Theatre with minors in Telecommunications and Labor Studies from Indiana University. In 2017, he made the decision to blog a road trip across the country, and soon after his rigging career went big.

Tyler has spent the majority of his career working as a touring technician, primarily as the Tour Rigger/Automation Tech. His most recent touring was as a Production Manager for Feld Entertainment (for Sesame Street Live).

Tyler shares with us fun stories from on tour, how celebrities treat their crew, what life is like on a tour bus, and how he started his business. He shares great tips on starting your own business – including how you overcome challenges that inevitably come your way – and why having a great team around you is absolutely essential.

Andrew gets Tyler to share a crazy tour story, talk about some of his favorite shows to work on (Mama Mia, Blue Man Group, Disney On Ice), and calls him out on bringing in a Lambert Cafe mug without ever having been there! This is a fascinating episode about a career you may never have known existed until now. Give it a listen!

Mind Yo' Business S6:E8 - The Business of Finding Home, Pursuing Your Passions, and Running a Business

Your podcast master, Andrew Lambert, welcomed Bridgett Divohl into the McKeet Financial Resources Studio for Episode 8 of Season 6 of Mind Your Business. Bridgett, owner of Royale Hair Parlor and a newly licensed health coach, had so much to bring to this conversation!

Bridgett grew up in rural Clarksburg, IN and, after graduating from a class of just under 80 students, moved to Cincinnati to pursue a career in cosmetology. After her stint in Cincinnati, she moved on to Chicago where she met her now wife and she shares how the business practices of the salon owner she worked for impacted her role now. Bridgett and her wife made their way to Bloomington after being swept away by our farmers market and the small-town, big-city vibes. Our conversation goes back to how her prior employer was a yogi and passionate about nutrition and that contributed to Bridgett’s dream of pursuing a career in health and nutrition. The problem was always, “When is the right time?” When both of her parents were sick simultaneously–dad with Parkinson's disease and mom with cognitive issues–that pushed her to pursue her dream. As COVID-19 hit and challenged her salon, it helped her realize she could trust the team she had to take over.

This podcast delves into finding your passion, pursuing your dreams, the obstacles you will face on the way, and how to keep going. Bridgett also talks about her new business, Sonder Glow Health Coaching, and how that transition has been going. She tells us how she has always wanted to encourage others in their career, empower them to take charge of their physical and mental health, and how that feeds into what she does now. This is such a mindful episode and one you won’t want to miss!

Mind Yo' Business S6:E7 - The Business of Broadcasting, DJ Personas, Sports, and Marketing

Podcast Master, Andrew Lambert, welcomed a Bloomington native and celebrity into the McKee Financial Studio for the July episode of Mind Yo’ Business. Matt “Unique” Englert is a Bloomington fixture and had so much to bring to this conversation.

Matt grew up on the west side of Bloomington and Ellettsville and graduated from Edgewood High School. He shares how music was a big part of his upbringing as his parents played vinyls of Johnny Cash, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, and many other classic rock groups in the home. Matt talks about his very first job as a DJ – in high school, he and his friend created a business out of their passion for music by DJing house parties and school dances almost every weekend.

Post graduation, Matt shares with us his rocky start to college at IUPUI, how he got into studying broadcasting at Vincennes, and the full-circle journey of coming back to IU to study sports broadcasting.

Andrew and Matt get into how “Unique” came onto the scene via various broadcasting and DJing jobs. The conversation eventually moves to how he made his way into the biggest sports bar in Chicago; his connection to all the major bars in Bloomington; and his big break DJing ESPN’s College GameDay for the matchup between Michigan and Indiana.

Filled with big names, an insight into broadcasting, a crazy Aerosmith experience, and why throwing chicken wings or hot rolls might not be a great idea, this is an episode any music lover, IU sports lover, or Bloomington native will absolutely not want to miss!

Mind Yo' Business S6:E6 - The Business of Never Saying Never, Great Literature, Library Science, and Using Your Position to Help Others

Andrew welcomed Woodson Hughes to the McKee Financial Studios for our June episode of Mind Yo’ Business.

Hailing from Halifax County, VA, Woodson spent most of his life in Virginia saying that he would never leave. After graduating high school, Woodson went to college to study Education and quickly changed direction to Library Science. That career shift took him to South Boston, VA where he worked as the manager of the library. There, he was put in a position of influence as he developed programs for the community and sought to initiate outreach. Woodson tells us how he became a sort of celebrity in the community.

His lovely wife – whom he met in a YMCA during a Virginia drought – nudged him to leave the place he said he would never leave for Bloomington, IN about seven years ago.

Woodson talks about his position at the library, what it was like growing up in “Trump Country”, why black and white film is superior, why you should “never say never”, and how literature is of incredible importance to understanding humanity.

Per the theme of season six, the conversation veers to Lambert Cafe. Woodson tells Andrew about an imposter restaurant throwing pancakes instead of rolls, and how throwing rolls may be insensitive to the world hunger crisis. If your life has taken unexpected turns, you love film and literature, or you want to use your position for good, this is an episode you do not want to miss!

Mind Yo' Business S6:E5 - The Business of Hard Work, Leveraging Talent, and Doing the Next Right Thing

Andrew welcomed Bloomington native, Sandra McGow, to the McKee Financial Resources Studio for this Mind Yo’ Business episode.

Self-proclaimed redneck, wife, and mom to two, Sandra grew up in Bloomington as the Swartz Ridge princess.

She tells us how her hard work and determination took her through almost every position at the local YMCA, got her recruited to work in media sales, and brought her to her current position working with the aging population.

After graduating from Bloomington North High School, Sandra jumped into the workforce at the local YMCA inspired by the hard-working women she grew up under. She quickly moved into a full-time position at the front desk, then into administration, then into tech, and on and on.

Sandra tells us how she has lived by this quote, “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard”; how she was recruited into a role at a local radio station; and how she has seen hard work, perseverance, and determination open doors for her as she pursued careers.

She also shares about her involvement with Kids with Absent Parents (KAP) – her personal experience growing up with a father in and out of prison led her to want to give back to others living that same experience.

This episode almost ended before it started after Andrew was appalled by Sandra’s favorite genre of music, Country, but picked back up as they bonded over time spent as dancers (Andrew reveals his secret life as a tap dancer). We call out to the Cyrus family to get Sandra a replacement Achy Breaky Heart t-shirt that was ruined while she was painting a demolition derby car and wonder how a roll-catching competition would play out in Lambert Cafe.

Mind Yo' Business S6:E4 - The Business of Law, Representation, and Advocacy for Your Community

The McKee Financial Resources Studios welcomed Jeremy Dilts to speak with podcast master Andrew Lambert for our fourth episode of season six. Jeremy is a Bloomington native–he went to elementary school here and came back to obtain his undergrad at Indiana University and then attended Indiana University McKinney School of Law for his Juris Doctor degree. He currently lives in Bloomington with his wife and children. Jeremy has been a practicing attorney for over two decades and had many experiences to share during our conversation.

Jeremy shares how he came to be interested in the field of law through a political science course during his undergrad; the wisdom that “nothing is for sure” when it comes to cases; and his advice to those interested in law – “don’t, unless you are ready to be passionate about it for years to come”.

Outside of handling medical malpractice cases, Jeremy enjoys being a “mediocre athlete” alongside his wife and is involved with the Monroe County Autism Foundation as acting president. Jeremy has three children, two of whom have special needs.

As a result, he has spent years advocating for people with disabilities as a board member of a local not-for-profit organization and through pro bono advocacy work in court.

Of course, per the theme of season six, Andrew gets Jeremy to talk about the legal implications of Lambert’s Cafe throwed rolls. Can Andrew file a “buttery battery claim” if he gets smacked in the face with a soft roll? Be sure to listen to this month’s episode to find out!

Mind Yo' Business S6:E3 The Business of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Starting a Business

Mind Yo' Business S6:E3 The Business of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Starting a Business

In this third episode of season six, your podcast master Andrew Lambert visits with registered dietitian, mom of three, and wife to a hall-of-fame wrestler, Kim Tirapelle, in the McKee Financial Resources Studio. Calling in to us from currently rainy California, Kim and Andrew catch up on what has been going on since they graduated from the same high school eons ago.

After making it through high school with Andrew, Kim went to the University of Illinois to play on the first women’s division one soccer team and study kinesiology. Kim shares how one semester away from graduation she had a phone call with her parents and told them she wanted to pursue something different. She tells us why she decided to pursue a masters in nutritional science, how she was later able to combine both her love of nutrition and her love of athletes with her business Active Bariatric Nutrition, and the challenges of becoming a business owner as someone with no formal training in that area. Kim also addresses the impact that obesity has played on most Americans and why it needs to be examined more as a disease instead of dismissing it as just bad lifestyle choices.

Whether you are interested in turning your passion into a business, are fascinated by the world of nutrition, or want to hear an inspiring story, this is an episode you won’t want to miss. Also, Andrew asks the very important question of whether or not he is allowed to continue consuming Lambert rolls. What does Kim have to say about the smear of butter? Listen and find out!

Mind Yo' Business S6:E2 - The Business of Professional Hacking, Professional Darth Vadering, and Cybersecurity

The McKee Financial Resources Studio was ecstatic to bring on professional hacker, Kevin Johnson, for an eccentric episode. After growing up in Boca Raton, Kevin graduated from high school and began working in tech, quickly rising the ranks, and eventually starting his company Secure Ideas, based in Jacksonville, Florida. His experience writing code, managing networks, and running computer bulletin board systems that are still used by power companies today has made him an expert in the field. Kevin gives out advice to those who want to get into cybersecurity and explains why the field is so important for business owners.

Aside from tech, Kevin shares stories linked to his upbringing in nerd culture that takes the conversation down so many hilarious roads. Mind Yo' Business S5:E12 - The Business of Being Batman's Batman
The Production House Studios was beyond excited to welcome in the December guest.  Michael Uslan, best known for his work with the Batman franchise and multiple partnerships with DC Comics, joined us from his L.A. studio to discuss what it means to be "Batman's Batman."   Michael shares his amazing story of discovering comics, why he was determined to create a college course about comics, and his entry into the film world all while being focused on the Batman franchise.

Michael's advice to anyone starting a business or wanting to hit a high goal is priceless.  The stories of interacting with executives, many of which ignored or insulted his pitches, demonstrate perseverance, focus, and drive that many people don't often embrace and works as the blueprint of what business and personal growth should be. With heartfelt and funny stories of behind-the-scenes moments; including how Stan Lee moved from a once comic book idol to a business partner, can't be missed.

This episode covers if Michael ever figures out who Miranda Lambert really is, pushing through the frustrations of dealing with nipples in one iteration of the Batsuit, to excitedly talking about the new chapters of the Batman franchise, including the Batmobile about to launch its animated series, the love and protection Michael shares should be something that all entrepreneurs strive to achieve.

Mind Yo' Business S5:E11 - The Business of Smoking or Non-Smoking in Small Town Cigar Shops

The Production House Studios was a privileged guest in Michael Fisher's own The Briar & The Burley's smoking lounge.

Andrew and Michael helped themselves to some good cigars and bourbon while discussing the age-old question of smoking or non-smoking.

Growing up in Michigan, Michael came to town to attend Indiana University. After sampling around in several career fields, he found a great hobby in pipes and cigars and opened his own shop, which is celebrating its 50th year in business.

Listen in to learn how Michael overcame the new tobacco laws and restrictions that began in Indiana.

One of his greatest challenges, besides providing good air-quality to his customers, has been the Internet. Michael describes how online sales are turning people away from the old-fashioned store shopping and how his customer service and employees go above and beyond any traditional website experience.

The Briar & The Burley has seen a lot of changes in Bloomington's downtown scenery and shops.

Mind Yo' Business S5:E10 - The Business of Feeding Our Community for 40 Years in Creative Ways

Mind Yo' Business S5:E10 - The Business of Feeding Our Community for 40 Years in Creative Ways

The Production House Studios welcomed in Julio Alonso and Jake Bruner on this fall crisp day to discuss their work with Bloomington’s own, Hoosier Hills Food Bank. The Hoosier Hills Food Bank (HHFB) has been keeping our neighbors fed for 40 years.

Jake and Julio have had the pleasure of working with Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, Community Kitchen, Pantry 279, and the Boys and Girls Club to ensure our community families are receiving healthy meals at their dinner tables.

One of the biggest challenges in working with Food Banks is meeting your supply to the demand. In 2020, HHFB received an outpour of donations from the community, and in the last year alone served 1.4 million pounds of produce! That’s a lot of broccoli! To ensure they were meeting all members of the community listen in and learn how HHFB is branching out into alternative ways of delivering food when donations are just not enough.

Gone are the days of the stigma surrounding Food Banks and feeding the “needy”. Poverty has been an issue since the Dark Ages but listen in as Julio and Jake work to navigate the issues in our community.

Wes, are you listening? Turn down Miranda Lambert and get back to work! It’s time for the Ruby Anniversary video premiere of the HHFB!

From these experiences Eric's passion grew into the connectivity between human beings through social interactions.  Eric's growth within the IU Alumni Relations Office led to trust among multiple donors and their families and led to generations of students becoming part of the growing university. One incident left Eric floored when an alumni member hosted a Student Recruitment event without telling his wife, she walked in to quite a surprise.

Eric shares fantastic stories tied to the beginnings of Straight No Chaser, meeting Michael Uslan, and navigating the alumni's discrepancies with the firing of then famous coach Bob Knight.  His belief in staying connected is seen by the many alumni officers and chapter leaders that still interact with him today, even after he and they have left their positions.  This important network allows Eric to still help people living all over the world as they decide how to get involved with university activities.

If you've lived in Bloomington long enough, you will have heard about Eric's daughter, Jill, whose life was taken too early on a morning bike ride. In this episode we discuss the wonderful gift Bloomington has been given with Jill's House. Here we learn about its origin story and the intergenerational preschool they now have within.  The conversation within episode is filled with passion and advice.  It will leave you wanting to learn even more the next time you see Eric.

Did someone say Miranda Lambert? Eric has a connection which may finally lead us to an in-person meeting with her.

Miranda, can you hear Mind Yo' Business calling?

Mind Yo' Business S5:E08 - The Business of Sincere Friendships, Wedding Planning, and Juggling Family Life

The Production House Studios was a flood of enthusiasm from our guests, Christina Rockett and Michelle Suttile.

From a humble start in wedding planning to venturing into a podcast these two women are thirsty for growth.

Branching out right after Covid brought many life changing events for everyone, but for Michelle and Christina, they began not 1, but 2 new business ventures and a strong friendship.

Navigating through county ordinances and business strategy, this dynamic duo shares their beginnings and merge of businesses.

Between working multiple jobs, building a business career, and working through family challenges; these women explain the ups and downs of growing their professionalism in the community. They also explain how they've overcome stressful wedding situations, finding the right venues for accommodations, and hiring new staff to help them manage their valuable time. One event in particular involved quite a debacle: slippery dance floor, cars stuck in the mud, and managing a drunken guest.

While we are unsure if Miranda Lambert can be the next wedding singer at an event; Andrew announces his own services to ordain weddings with press credentials and his own parking pass.
