#82 From Prison to Permaculture - Chris Burroughs (:macro)

After serving 14 years in prison, 90 days of which were in solitary confinement, Chris Buroughs is now the director of Garden 31, a group that works to localize food production in San Diego's low income neighborhoods by training new farmers with a focus on formerly incarcerated men and women as well as those suffering from substance abuse issues.

MUD\FILMS’ new ‘Rituals’ series explores the enduring daily habits of people we admire.

In ‘The Importance of Ritual: From Prison to Leading a Fulfilling Life,’ the formerly incarcerated urban gardener Chris Burroughs uses routine and nature to expand his world … instead of making it smaller. #79 How to Avoid Being Drained by Emotional Vampires (:micro)

Tired of people throwing their emotional garbage in your driveway, leaving you to clean up the mess? If you’re done letting other people trash your energy, listen to today’s episode for a practice that will help you clear out what’s not yours, fill back up with the good stuff and protect you from the racoons of other people’s problems.

    Sara

    :microdose host

    Exercise:

    1. Know what’s yours, and what’s theirs. If it’s theirs, clear it out.

    2. Fill yourself back up with you—your thoughts, emotions and dreams.

    3. Practice re-centering: Turn the static down, get outside in the open air and do whatever you need to create more space in your body.

Joey Odom is the co-founder of Aro, a company that’s working to address cell phone addiction. In the first half of this podcast, Joey interviews me. Then, we flip it around and I interview Joey (crazy I know), before diving into the dangers of digital addiction. Joey was introduced to me by the great Chris Keener of MUD\FILMS. Thanks Chris, Joey didn't disappoint.

#77 How to Quiet Your Inner Critic Pt. 1 (:micro)

Is someone living rent-free inside your head? If your mind feels like a big family dinner where everybody gives their opinion on how you should be living your life, and then you get stuck cleaning up their dishes, it’s time for a quiet mind retreat. In this episode, I’ll show you how to stop extra thoughts weighing you down, so your mind feels less like it’s going home for the holidays … and more like it’s napping by a clear mountain lake.

    #75 Sex and Psychedelics (:micro)

    #75 Sex and Psychedelics (:micro)

Sex and drugs are two of the most powerful tools we can use to alter our consciousness. Separately, they hold the power of transformation and healing. Because of this, they’re hotly-debated, steeped in stigmas and assumptions, and heavily regulated. So if sex and psychedelics can shake up the status quo on their own, what happens when we combine them? How can we do so with intention?

    Exercise:

What’s your ideal set and setting?

If you’re exploring sex and psychedelics with a partner, do you and the other person have compatible intentions?

Have you explicitly communicated what your intentions are?

#74 Scott Norton on The Power of Analogies, Lessons Learned from Steve Jobs, and Why to Start with “Why”

Scott Norton (@swhnorton) is a venture capitalist and MUD\WTR board member. He previously co-founded Sir Kensington's—the brand that’s best known for making condiments with character. At Sir Kensington’s, he raised over $20 million from investors, guiding the company to a successful acquisition by Unilever in 2017.

Scott has been named one of Fast Company's “Most Creative People in Business” and listed on Forbes' “30 Under 30.”

About a year ago, I gave Scott one of his first surfing lessons at Venice Beach. On the wave he maintained a low, crouched position and kept his eyes straight ahead … just like I told him. Nice job, Scott!

#73 How to Start (and Stick With) Good Writing Habits (:micro)

#73 How to Start (and Stick With) Good Writing Habits (:micro)

There’s something about putting pen to paper that helps us separate the wheat from the chaff. Journaling helps us track what is working in our lives and what needs to change, bringing both our fears and dreams into the light of awareness. Know all this, but you’re still not doing it? Here are some tips to get you started with a consistent journaling habit.

    Try this journaling exercise:

    1. Designate a specific time each day to sit down and write.
    2. Set a timer for, say, three minutes. When the timer goes off, stop writing!
    3. Make sure to have your writing prompts ready.

The trick is to “James Clear” it: Make the journaling task obvious, attractive, easy and satisfying.

#69 Shane Heath On How To Hire, Journaling Techniques, & Microdosing Ayahuasca (:macro)

Shane Heath (@somanypossibilities) is MUD\WTR's founder & CEO. He's also my boss. So, I'd like to take a moment to talk about his biceps. They're like pythons, or wet rope. And lately he's been looking extra youthful, like a baby. A super-jacked baby with vision. I think it's because of his new hyperbaric chamber, which we discuss in this episode. It almost killed him because he didn't read the directions before climbing inside. We talk about that too. Please tell Shane how much you loved this episode so I can keep my job.—Kyle

#68 How Can Being Sober Impact Your Friendships?

Turns out peer pressure isn’t just for school kids—even adults get labeled as untrustworthy buzzkills for opting out of that last shot.  But why do our friends take it so personally when we make choices about our own bodies? This episode explores why the pack takes it so personally when we defy convention by choosing to stay sober.

Chris Keener is one of my favorite creative collaborators in the whole wild world. He’s the head of MUD\FILMS, and I get to write scripts with him by day, then philosophize with him by night: To be, or not to be? Are we alone in the universe? Vanilla or chocolate milkshake at In-n-Out? He's a breathwork coach and every Wednesday leads our team through a lil' guided breathwork session. A master storyteller, Chris has worked with National Geographic, Discovery Channel, ESPN and the Travel Channel. He produced the five-part docuseries We Speak Dance for Netflix. But now MUD\WTR gets all of his attention, which we are all very happy about.

In his book, The Psychedelic Explorer's Guide: Safe, Therapeutic and Sacred Journeys, he provides insight into safe and correct uses of psychedelic drugs.
