    The F-15 known as serial number 71-0290 rolled off the assembly lines and into history in 1973 as the sixth F-15 ever produced and the first two seater F-15.  Intended to be used as a trainer for the then all new F-15, this model was given the designation TF-15.  That may have been enough to make it a notable Eagle, but almost from its beginnings this airplane was destined for research and discovery.  In the late 1970s the development teams at the Langley Research Center began exploring the concepts and benefits of thrust vectoring. These studies looked at 2D thrust vectoring along with thrust reversing and as early as 1982 a model of an F-15 with 2D nozzles was produced.  Shortly thereafter, aircraft 71-0291 was fitted with 2D nozzles and canards and flown as a proof of concept.  Based on this a contract was awarded to further study these enhancements and this became known as the STOL/MTD or Short Takeoff and Landing/Maneuver Technology Demonstrator.

    Let’s take a look at how the Eagle became the Strike Eagle

    Overview

    The F15E Strike Eagle is a dual-role fighter meaning it is capable of performing both  air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. The Strike Eagle is a twin engine, twin tailed fourth generation fighter capable of taking the fight down to low altitude and operating day or night in virtually any weather. 

    Developed from  the hugely successful F-15 fighter, the Strike Eagle was created to fly long range interdiction missions or deep air support without the need for a fighter escort or electronic warfare aircraft.  Notable features that distinguish the Strike Eagle from the F15C Eagle are tandem seats, conformal fuel tanks, and a typically darker camouflage.

    The F-20 TigerShark - Part 3 in the F-5 Series

    Let’s listen to the story on how the Tiger became the TigerShark

    What began as Northrup’s F-5G and eventually became known as  the F-20 Tigershark was a light fighter with advanced avionics which was easier to maintain and much less expensive to procure and operate than it’s chief rival, the General dynamics F-16. 

    The F-20 could carry beyond visual range missiles, as well as air to ground missiles and bombs, giving it the capability to fire or deploy most weapons in the US arsenal. 

    Easy to fly, inexpensive to operate, a very capable aircraft with a powerful engine -  yet only 3 were ever built and the program was cancelled.  Some have called the Tigershark the greatest fighter never made.  Why did this happen?  Take a listen to find out more...

    The F-5 Part 2: Origins of a Tiger

    The F-5 Part 2: Origins of a Tiger

    The Northrop F-5E Tiger II is a lightweight multirole fighter which is an upgraded version of the F-5A Freedom Fighter.  Upgrades to the engines, avionics, and structural improvements allow the F-5E to fly faster, carry more fuel and weapons, and have significantly improved sensors.  All of this was done while keeping the F-5E an easy to maintain, inexpensive to fly, and highly maneuverable fighter. The F-5E is still in use today as an aggressor or adversary aircraft by the US Navy, and is still operational with over 25 countries. The Tiger II has and continues to make its mark on military aviation.

    Here are some specifications for the F-5E:

    Height. 13 ft 4.5 in (4.08 m)

    Wingspan. 26 ft 8 in (8.13 m)

    The F-5 Part 1: Freedom Fighter

    The F-5 Part 1: Freedom Fighter

    The Northrop F5 Freedom Fighter is a small, highly aerodynamic  and maneuverable jet  which was built around two compact and high thrust General Electric J85 engines.  The F-5 was designed from the ground up to be an easy to maintain, simple to fly, inexpensive multirole fighter.  With its origins dating back to the 1950s the F-5 has stood the test of time, it has become a popular export aircraft  and is still used today by the United states as an adversary or aggressor aircraft. Today we will be taking a look at the first two variants, the F-5A and B, also known as the Freedom Fighter.  Here are some specifications for the F-5A
    Length 47.2 ft (14.37 m)
    Height 13.2 ft  (4.01 m)
    Wingspan 25.8 ft (7.87 m)
    Maximum Speed: 925 mph (Mach 1.4)
    Empty weight: 8,805 lbs (3,667 kg)
    Max T/O weight: 20,677 lb (9,379 kg)
    Engine Thrust Class Each:  2,270 lbf (12.1kN) thrust dry, 4,080 lbf (18.1kN) with afterburner
    Armament: The F-5A has two internally mounted 20mm cannons in the fuselage nose and can carry two heat seeking sidewinder missiles on the wingtips. Additionally, the F-5 has five pylons which can be used to carry up to 6200 pounds of ordinance or fuel tanks.

    HMS Queen Elizabeth and the F-35

    HMS Queen Elizabeth and the F-35

    Let’s take a look at the Royal Navy’s new dynamic duo:  The HMS Queen Elizabeth and the F-35

    The HMS Queen Elizabeth is the largest warship ever built for the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy capable of carrying up to 70 aircraft.   Named after the first HMS Queen Elizabeth, which was a World War 1 era Super Dreadnought, she carries the Tudor rose-adorned crest and motto.

    Built to replace the Invincible class, which was retired in 2014, the Queen Elizabeth has more than three times the displacement and is  30% longer

    Here are some specifications for the HMS Queen Elizabeth:

    Displacement:   65,000 tonnes
    Length:             284 m (932 ft)
    Beam:             39 m (128 ft) waterline  73 m (240 ft) overall
    Draught:             11 m (36 ft)
    Speed:             32 knots (59 km/h)
    Range:             10,000 nautical miles (19,000 km)
    Capacity:            1,600
    Troops:              250

    One of the distinctive features of the Queen Elizabeth are her two island superstructures, one is used for ship operations  and sea navigation while the other is used to conduct  air operations.  Each island serves as a backup for the other to provide redundancy in case of damage.

    Unlike most American Carriers The Queen Elizabeth does not have catapults or arrestor wires, meaning she is designed to operate short takeoff/vertical landing or STOVL  aircraft.and helicopters.   The ship was in fact designed to operate the F-35B

    In the Fall of 2018 the Queen Elizabeth sailed across the Atlantic to the US Naval Air Station at Patuxent River, where she would undergo initial trials with the F-35B. 

    While the F-35B can take off vertically, it saves much more fuel and can extend its range by
    using a ski jump system.  This exercise marked the first time an F-35B took off using the ski jump method from a ship.  And while using a ski jump to launch aircraft is nothing new, the
    Shipborne rolling vertical landing (SRVL) is.  This  allows the F35 to land with forward speed or about 30 knots of overtake, meaning the F35 can land with fuel and weapons on board.  The Queen Elizabeth and the F35 were the first every ship/aircraft combination ever to achieve this feat.

    All about the A-10 Warthog

    All about the A-10 Warthog

    The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II is a single-seat, twin turbofan engine, straight wing jet aircraft developed for the United States Air Force (USAF). Officially known by the Air Force as the Thunderbolt it’s  pilots refer to it as the "Warthog" or "Hog",

    Notable features include vertical twin tails, engines that are above the fuselage, a straight wing, a large canopy, and of course a fierce Gatling gun that protrudes out of the front like a mean cigar. 

    The A-10 was and is the only Air Force aircraft designed primarily to support friendly ground troops over long periods of time, which is a mission known as  Close air support or CAS. Everything about the A-10 is about ground attack: straight wings for improved slow speed maneuverability, increased payload, and longer time on station, engines that are mounted above the wings to reduce hits from ground fire, a titanium bathtub to protect the pilot, and a stable gun platform to put rounds on targets.  Few aircraft have performed as well in the CAS role the A-10 simply dominates in this area.  While initially conceived to attack large Soviet tank columns in Europe during the Cold War in a conflict that thankfully never erupted - the A-10 has gone on to have a second career as the ultimate support option for coalition troops on the ground in conflicts over the ensuing decades.  With it’s distinct engine sound and unforgettable Gatling cannon burst the A-10 is beloved by friendly troops and absolutely feared by enemy forces on the ground.

    The F-18 Part 2: From Hornet to Super Hornet

    The F-18 Part 2: From Hornet to Super Hornet

    The Super Hornet is an evolution of the Hornet, and just like the Hornet the Super Hornet is a multirole, twin engine, supersonic carrier capable fighter AND attack aircraft. Also similar to the Hornet, the Super Hornet’s notable features include: twin tails, folding wings, a tail section that has vertical stabilizers forward of the elevators, a unique extended wing design, Leading Edge Extensions or LEX, reinforced landing gear for carrier operations, and wingtip missile racks.  However unlike the Hornet, the Super Hornet has rectangular intake ramps, a larger “sawtooth” wing, and is about 20% larger than the Hornet.

    With its larger wing, more powerful engines,  and extended combat radius, Super Hornets are used as fleet defenders, air superiority fighters, long range strike aircraft with precision guided weapons, fighter escort, suppression of enemy air defenses, close air support, maritime strike, reconnaissance, forward air control and even tanker missions.  Essentially the Super Hornet is capable of performing every mission type in the tactical spectrum, making it the embodiment of a multirole fighter.
