Your unofficial study group for the ACEM Primary exams. Join myself (Charlotte) and some fabulous guests as we go through the core content from past Primary Viva exam papers. In each episode we tackle a particular topic from one of the four subjects - pharmacology, physiology, anatomy and pathology. It is done in a Q&A format to mimic what the exam is actually like. 9. Renal Physiology with Dr. Josh Monester

    9. Renal Physiology with Dr. Josh Monester

Sodium handling, renin release and calculating the GFR! For episode 9, Dr. Josh Monester joins me again to discuss the function of nephrons and the cool things they get up to. Some of these answers are a bit longer than you'd be expected to give in your exam, but we thought the extra explanation was worth it. There are heaps of notes on the  episode webpage from my own revision - as well as a transcript of this episode.

    8. Cardiovascular Pharmacology with Dr. Shireen Gujral

    8. Cardiovascular Pharmacology with Dr. Shireen Gujral

Calcium channel blockers, adenosine and digoxin toxicity (which is very hard to say quickly!) For episode 8, I am chatting with my friend and colleague Dr. Shireen Gujral. Shireen joins me in the pillow fort studio whilst preparing for her own Primary Viva exam in the coming months. Shireen originally moved to Darwin for her interest in emergency trauma management. When she isn't at work or revising,  she enjoys getting out for a swim and playing with her dog. We cover a lot of content here which can be found on the website at www.acemprimarypodcast.com/episode8

    6. Cellular Injury and Inflammation with Dr. Janet Boromeo

Apoptosis, inflammatory mediators and cellular adaptations! For this episode I am lucky to be joined by the wonderful Dr. Janet Boromeo to tackle one of the more dry topics of this exam. Luckily, there are only so many questions they can ask you on this topic and we have recorded most of them for you here. You're welcome!

    5. Study Break - Can You Have A Life While Studying For This Exam? with Dr. Mel McNiff

    5. Study Break - Can You Have A Life While Studying For This Exam? with Dr. Mel McNiff

Is it really the 'thousand hour exam'? People will tell you that in order to pass the ED primary, you must give up your entire life to study.  Dr. Mel McNiff joins me in this episode to explain how (and why) she thought 'bugger that' and took on her first ever half-ironman triathlon at the same time as the exam. In this episode we cover the ups and downs of exam preparation, some realistic approaches to revision timetabling, what it's like preparing for a sporting event you've never done before, and how to make the work and study balance work for you.  I really loved recording this one and I think you'll enjoy listening!

    4. Respiratory Physiology with Dr. Yazmin Symons

    4. Respiratory Physiology with Dr. Yazmin Symons

Chemoreceptors, lung volumes and altitude. In this episode, I am joined by Dr. Yazmin Symons, ED Reg & adventurer extraordinaire,  to cover the hefty topic that is ALL of respiratory physiology. There is a lot of content in here! Luckily, this is one of my favourite topics so you get to enjoy it early in the series. Don't forget to check out the study notes for some additional graphs and insights.

    3. Antimicrobial Pharmacology with Dr. Josh Monester

    3. Antimicrobial Pharmacology with Dr. Josh Monester

Gentamicin, chloramphenicol and penicillins galore, this episode has ALL the good stuff! I am joined by Dr. Josh Monester, an ED registrar and enthusiastic medical educator. Together, we take on the tough (and often quite dry) topic of antimicrobial pharmacology, with a few sneaky tips here and there to help you remember the important things. Don't be scared off by the idea of reciting the pharmacokinetics of everything in the drug cupboard, just relax and let the methodical approach permeate your brain. Hopefully this helps some if it stick in there!
