Today, we are sharing our interview with the British ambassador to post-punk, Kirk Brandon. From recording at Wessex Sound Studios to touring around the UK and Europe with The Clash, Kirk’s bands, Theatre of Hate and Spear Of Destiny became staples of the early British Post-Punk scene in the 80s amidst the soundscape of the city at the time.

The Beastie Boys began their career in the world of post-punk, hardcore music in 1981. Prior to License to Ill, the Beastie Boys had spent the better part of a decade  exploring the cutting edge of  hip-hop, rap, punk, and the lyrical intersection often found in those respective genres. The band approached all their musical influences with an almost-outsider, satirical point of reference – never taking themselves or their music too seriously.

From its inception in the early seventies, Queen was known for its ability to transform itself and bring together diverse and eclectic soundworlds.  From glam rock to soul, rhythm and blues to opera – nothing seemed off limits. In 1980, they proved that again, combining the hottest sounds of disco with their signature classic rock sound, they created a track that would captivate generation of musicians and listeners alike — “Another One Bites the Dust”

In 1985, producer Stephen Lipson teamed up with  Bruce Woolley, Simon Darlow and Trevor Horn to create one of the decade’s most influential dance music tracks – “Slave to the Rhythm.” Originally intended for Frankie goes to Hollywood, the song found its iconic home in the talents of the incredible Grace Jones. The song showcases a powerhouse of talent and incredible songwriting and production creativity.

Before there was heavy metal, there was Black Sabbath. Arising from the ashes of the bleak industrial landscape of post-war Britain, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward charted a new course in the harder-blues-rock of Britain. With the release of the lead single from their second studio album, “Paranoid” Black Sabbath codified the sound which would become Heavy Metal Music.

But in 1987, the band’s indie sound collided with a pop aesthetic that captured audiences and reminded the world that popular music could still be art. Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (the band’s seventh studio album) gave the band their first top 40 album on the Billboard 200. In Barry Walsh’s review for Slant magazine, he compared the ambitious double-sided album to another eclectic and lengthy pop endeavor - the Beatles’ “White Album” - and concluded. “Cure gives the listener the kind of roller-coaster rush that only great pop can provide—they take you all the way through the amusement park, plying you with the sweetest cotton candy, until you wind up giddy and disoriented in the hall of mirrors.” Within this thrilling journey, the third single to be released from the album, “Just Like Heaven” gave the band their first top 40 single and first real American hit.

In 1942, Bing Crosby introduced a new Christmas classic to the world – “White Christmas.” The masterpiece of the legendary Tin Pan Alley composer Irving Berlin, “White Christmas” not only broke sales records for the next 80 years, it also changed the landscape of American Popular music. In a world centered on sheet music and songwriting, the song not only proved itself as a paragon composition – one which could be beautifully performed by hundreds of artists for more than a half of a century – but also as a landmark sound recording. As a recording, the song ushered in a new era for the music industry focused on individual artist interpretations, performances, and signature recordings. “White Christmas” is undoubtedly one of the most performed songs of all time and a legendary sound recording which has captivated audiences for eight decades.
