In this episode Casey and Tim breakdown Foundational Tenet #1: Be Safe.

    Tenet #1: Be Safe
People need to be open and embrace their vulnerability.  This is only possible in a safe environment (not necessarily comfortable), which the facilitator has most of the responsibility for creating.  As Facilitators we must turn our judgements into evaluations.  Judgements are made from a place of fear; evaluations are made from a place of compassion.  We must always create a context that allows for another’s vulnerability.

It's Season 5! A Deeper Way Foundational Tenets

It's Season 5! A Deeper Way Foundational Tenets

Season 5 is all about the six A Deeper Way Foundational Tenets.  Throughout this season, Casey and Tim will discuss each Tenet in detail and invite A Deeper Way Certified Facilitators to join in on the discussion at times as well.

This episode provides some background on the creation of the Tenets as well as a full reading of all six Tenets.

    A Deeper Way Foundational Tenets

    Be Safe
People need to be open and embrace their vulnerability.  This is only possible in a safe environment (not necessarily comfortable), which the facilitator has most of the responsibility for creating.  As Facilitators we must turn our judgements into evaluations.  Judgements are made from a place of fear; evaluations are made from a place of compassion.  We must always create a context that allows for another’s vulnerability.

    Be Patient
Our psyches and bodies are hardwired to not change.  With a deeper way, we understand that much of our behavior is deeply rooted in our unconscious, and most reactions to exploration and change (e.g. laughing, making fun of ourselves and others, complaining, etc.) are defenses against the fear.

    Get Used to Discomfort
Discomfort is necessary.  Deep, lasting change requires accessing our insecurities and fear and going into them – this is by nature uncomfortable.  Comfort is different than safety; discomfort is necessary, so is safety.

    Stay Curious
With a deeper way, there is always more.  In times of sharing and processing, the first response is rarely deep enough, rarely insightful enough, and rarely gets to the heart of an issue.  Encourage people to go further.  Use the skills of probes, silence, and open-ended questions to facilitate deeper exploration.

    Commit to Truth
Lasting change happens in the context of trusting relationships with self and others, it can’t happen in a vacuum.  There is no trust without truth.  Always seek to understand your peoples’ truth, be a witness to their Tacit Truth and help them return to the Unequivocal Truth: they are a normal person, worthy of love and belonging, because they exist.  Commit to relating to them from this place.  No excuses.  No matter how difficult.

Be Patient, again, and again and again and again
It takes time for real insight to get embedded.  People often need to hear and experience the insight multiple times in multiple ways.  This reality can be difficult for a Facilitator (or anyone!) to accept; we want to see progress after all!  Patience is the reminder that the growth process is always being realized.

Serving or Policing with Chief Danny Barton: Humanity (Part 3 of 3)

Serving or Policing with Chief Danny Barton: Humanity (Part 3 of 3)

This is the final installment of our 3-part series with Police Chief Danny Barton.   The episode ends with some comments and observations from Casey and Tim, along with some excerpts of the statement they released following the verdict in trial of Derek Chauvin, who was convicted of murdering George Floyd.

Official Statement from A Deeper Way.

From Dr. Casey Lankow & Dr. Tim Johansson

"Truth never damages a cause that is just." - Mahatma Gandhi

Accessing our own Truth is vital for realizing that our own worthiness is not tied to the conditions, expectations, or demands of another. Our worthiness is tied to our existence, nothing else.

Violence is the erasure of another's existence, of another's Truth. Violence disconnects us from both our Truth and from Justice. Together as a world, we witnessed violence on May 25, 2020, when George Floyd was murdered by a sworn officer of the peace. George Floyd's existence was erased by another human being in under 10 minutes.

On April 20, 2021, a jury brought conviction for this single moment of violent injustice. Yet the Truth was never hidden: George Floyd's right to love and belonging because he existed was taken from him, and for 330 days all humans sat with a gap between Justice and Truth

    We waited.

How many more are still waiting?

Violence is any erasure of another's existence, another's Truth: emotional violence, intellectual violence, spiritual violence. These erasures occur far more frequently, more systemically, more subtly than many people want to acknowledge. Too many people are sitting in a gap between Justice and Truth. For too many, that gap feels immense, immeasurable, and immutable.

How much longer are we willing to live in a world that allows these gaps to remain so big, so insidious, and so disempowering for so many people?

With power comes the responsibility to tell the Truth, to bear witness to others' Truths, and to work tirelessly to create a world where people experience the right to belong and participate fully in our society just as they are. No exceptions, conditions, or demands. We have the opportunity and responsibility to honor and protect another's right to their Truth.

How do we close the gap between Justice and Truth?

In the midst of differences, pain, and fear, the pull for self-protection is strong. The pull to remain comfortable is enticing. Yet, nothing will change if those with the capacity to bring change use their power to simply remain comfortable.

Are we okay with remaining comfortable while others remain erased?

Let each of us begin by more deeply, more consistently working to examine our own discomfort, rather than erasing another's Truth in order to maintain our own comfort.

What kind of world are we making Real?

    Truth never damages Justice.

Just Truth: You are a normal person, worthy of love and belonging because you exist.

Let us commit to relating to each other from this place of Just Truth. No matter how difficult, no matter how uncomfortable.

Serving or Policing with Chief Danny Barton: Identity (Part 2 of 3)

Serving or Policing with Chief Danny Barton: Identity (Part 2 of 3)

This episode is part 2 or a 3 part series with Police Chief Danny Barton.  When George Floyd was murdered in May of 2020, Danny Barton released this statement:

    To the Citizens of Coppell,

The members of the Coppell Police Department strive daily to serve a diverse community equitably and respectfully.

We have had an outstanding relationship with our community and strive daily to strengthen it. We will continue to hire men and women of character and train them to serve a community, not police it. Our actions are our promise to you.

After watching the national news and hearing police leaders begin to move the narrative away from the real issue, I feel compelled as a Police Chief and a citizen to share my feelings about what ‘s going on today. I am prepared for the criticism I will receive from my profession.

I did not begin my career in Coppell and my first years as a police officer were spent serving an African American community.

The following is from the observations of a career police officer. Nothing will change in this nation until we, the police, take the first steps.

    To citizens everywhere,

I began my law enforcement career in December of 1991.

Five Officers who were accused of beating Rodney King in Los Angeles were acquitted in April of 1992. Riots began nationwide. The trial of those five police officers was less about their actions and more about the culture of policing. I had some instructors in the police academy who felt the officers responded appropriately and others who were disappointed. That was 28 years ago.

Police Chiefs throughout the nation were assuring citizens that their police officers were different and that it was time for a change in policing.

    What has changed? Not much.

I am not satisfied that we have only a few bad apples. We have serious systemic issues profession-wide that are ignored and sometimes taught to the new officers coming out of the academy.

Make no mistake, the vast majority of police officers are good people, but there are too many wearing the uniform who should not be.

Every department knows who and what I am talking about.

The death of George Floyd did not happen suddenly.

It was not this one police officer’s actions that caused this death. It was the actions and inactions of police officers and police departments that feed the bad aspects of police culture. Over policing is awarded within our ranks. We call it proactive policing and it has filled jails and prisons throughout the nation.

No community has suffered more from over policing than the African American communities.

When we over police, we introduce men and women of color into a justice system that is biased, broken, and difficult to get out from under.

Police Chiefs must be allowed to remove those officers whose behaviors add to this narrative. We have to stop, as a profession, making excuses for the biased and sometimes criminal policing that takes place. Citing violence toward the police as a rationale for our tactics and strategies has no merit. Perhaps if we changed our tactics and strategies, less police officers and citizens would be injured or killed. Many Police Chiefs, Police Departments, and Police Officers are working every day to improve the culture of policing.

Let’s keep working and not look up in a few years and see that nothing has changed.

Serving or Policing with Chief Danny Barton: Society (Part 1 of 3)

Serving or Policing with Chief Danny Barton: Society (Part 1 of 3)

When George Floyd was murdered in May of 2020, Danny Barton released a statement that was unpopular amongst many of his peers and colleagues.  In this 3-part series, Tim and Casey speak with Police Chief Barton about how he got into law enforcement, his passion for changing police culture, and the statement he released that drew so much attention.

Danny Barton is the Chief of Police for the City of Coppell, Texas. Coppell Texas is a suburb of Dallas and is a community of approximately 48,000 residents.

Chief Barton has a passion to change police culture. His passion for the profession is why he believes that the culture of policing can be changed and authentic trust between communities and their police departments can thrive. An avid reader and learner, Chief Barton strives to be a role model for change in the policing profession.

Chief Barton has a Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice and a Master of Public Administration, both from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Chief Barton’s strongly believes that communities keep communities safe. He is often heard telling his community, “We are here to serve you, not police you”.

Justice: A Deeper Rationality (Part 1 with Johan Lorenzen)

Justice: A Deeper Rationality (Part 1 with Johan Lorenzen)

When day comes we ask ourselves,
where can we find light in this never-ending shade?
    The loss we carry,
    a sea we must wade.
We've braved the belly of the beast,
We've learned that quiet isn't always peace,
    and the norms and notions
    of what just is
    isn't always just-ice.
And yet the dawn is ours
    before we knew it.
    Somehow we do it.
    Somehow we've weathered and witnessed
    a nation that isn't broken,
    but simply unfinished.

Excerpt from Amanda Gorman's "The Hill We Climb"
