    ReVision Podcast

    No matter what age you are or your background, we have all had a dream for our lives. Some have seen their dream come to pass and then there are the rest of us who have felt that our dreams are on the proverbial backburner. It is easy to get jaded and want to give up on that dream however there is hope. This podcast was created to give people who feel that their vision or dream has failed the desire, drive, and dare I say hope to dream again. Why is this called the ReVision Podcast?The word Revision can be broken up into two words; Re - meaning againVision - the manner in which one sees or conceives of something. My goal is to help us to get to the point where we can believe that we can once again dream and hope.

    40. Just Because It Is Hard, Doesn't Mean You Can Quit | William Howell

    40. Just Because It Is Hard, Doesn't Mean You Can Quit | William Howell

    For the past three months, I have been working a weird schedule that has had our home in upheaval because it was so difficult to plan for anything with our family. I would work from 930-530 three days a week and 7-3 two days a week. Now, I know what many of you are thinking; that's a piece of cake schedule! The problem with children is that they have expectations. They have thoughts of what reality is and that reality is this; nothing is supposed to change...period.

    It was so hard to change my schedule. It wasn't that I didn't want to be with my family or that I did not want to be home at all. It was a season that I had to set what I thought aside and take one for the team. I was glad that I could help. We needed help.

    The thing about kids is that they don't fully understand reality. The first thing they think about when they don't like something is to quit and do something else. They do "what feels good." It isn't reality! One of the girls said, "Dad, why can't you just quit?" My response? "Do you like to have lights? Do you like to eat?" I know. The reality, right?

    In a day where it is easier to just quit when the going gets tough instead of getting tough, I will do what I have to do. Why?  In the book of Proverbs, King Solomon wrote

    "Commit your activities to the Lord, and your plans will be achieved"
    Proverbs 16:3 HCSB

    If you give the things that you are doing to Him, He will honor it. Sure, you are going to have to sacrifice time, energy, and maybe even money. Fortunately, I am back on my old shift again and it is normal again. The kids and the wife are Here's the thing; if I have to do it again, I will do it. Why? Because you gotta do what you gotta do.

    39. You Cannot Fill an Empty Well with an Empty Bucket | William Howell

    39. You Cannot Fill an Empty Well with an Empty Bucket | William Howell

    Let me start by saying this, the post that I am writing is in no way meant to bring condemnation. This post is to encourage you to be your best self for you so that you can be your best self for others. With that said, you cannot fill a well with an empty bucket. Let me explain.

    For nearly 10 years, I worked in ministry full-time. I gave everything I had to ministry. I sacrificed time and energy to make sure that everyone was taken care of. I also sacrificed my time to learn new skills and go back to school to better our family's opportunity in the marketplace. In the end, I had nothing left to give. I was dry. The well of information, of encouragement, of faith, was all dried up. What happened?

    At the end of the day, I had not replenished what I had given. I drained everything dry. Like the title says you cannot fill a well with an empty bucket. What I had to learn was to do these simple tasks to refill my bucket.

    1. Talk to God. I know that there are many of you who read my posts that do not have a faith journey. I write through the lens that I am living and I had to first learn to talk to God. He is the only One who can truly refill me and direct me towards my purpose.

    2. Write it Down. I began to write down my thoughts. Now, I did not do this every day, however, I did it as often as I could recall. At first, you won't do it every single day either. That's fine. Just start a process and you can change it down the road. We aren't trying to be religious...we're just trying to refill a dry well.
    3. Read. Some of life's greatest ideas come from reading. I have chosen to read a daily devotion from YouVersion, a daily reading from a John Maxwell Leadership Daily Reader, and a non-fiction book. I have a list of books that I am working on for 2

    38. To Dream Again | William Howell

    38. To Dream Again | William Howell

    For nearly 20 years, I have had this dream. I mean a big, hairy, audacious dream. A dream that in the eyes of other people is impossible. For me, it was impossible. In 2016, we were getting closer and closer to getting this dream launched. Then the unthinkable happened. The rug was pulled out from under us. A new journey had begun in our lives that would erase all the hard work that we had made.

    When you have that happen to you, it is very hard to dream again. You start to wonder, "what's the point" or "why try when everything is against you?" It is easier to stop dreaming than to dream and have it taken away. The only problem is that you miss the destiny God has for you. You end up just surviving instead of thriving. Then, you become bitter.

    How do I know these things? I was there. When all of this happened, I had to learn to trust again and to dream again. I had to learn how to not be afraid of the unknown. I also had to learn that just because one person does you wrong does not mean that all people do you wrong.

    Now, I have to learn something new. I have to learn to dream again. I have to learn how to let go and draw strength from God in order to start dreaming again. The faith that God has given me has to help me to be able to see the unseen even through the hurt.

    Are you struggling with this? You are not alone. Comment below your thoughts, what are you dreaming about, and any other thoughts!

    37. In Awe of God's Goodness | William Howell

    37. In Awe of God's Goodness | William Howell

    I paid our bills yesterday and one of them is a portion of our mortgage payment. I was looking at the balance was surprised. I usually check it once a month, but it slipped my mind in December.  When I checked it today, I was floored. So many things flooded my memory of what we have gone through. Here are just a few;

    1. We are a single-family income with 5 people that make well below the national household income.  Before the birth of our 2nd child, Sara and I made the decision for her to be a stay-at-home mom.  Sara was miserable at work and she was missing out on all of the milestones with our oldest. She had dreamt for most of her life of being a stay-at-home mom. One day, she came home and was just beside herself about her job. I told her to quit after her maternity leave. On October 6, 2009, Sara became a stay-at-home mom.  When you have three children, the cost never really goes down. There are doctor appointments, dentist appointments, clothes, school, sports, etc. There is no end to the expenses that you have!

    2. We are debt-free minus the house. On February 29, 2012, we paid our final debt off after one of many major events that happened in our lives. In July the previous year, I was involved in a car accident that totaled my vehicle. A few months later, our only means of transportation which was our van blew a head gasket. At this point, I wasn't making much more than $30,000 annually. Needless to say that we were broke. In the winter, we had someone bless us with a check and asked us to buy a car. It was a good amount for an older, used car. I searched for several weeks and just could not find one that I was at peace. In a last-ditch effort, I put on Facebook that I was looking for a car. I received a message from someone who was selling two and asked if I was interested. They sent me pictures and I was less than impressed. However, I felt that I needed to at least give it a try.

      I looked at one of the cars and immediately felt that I was supposed to buy it. I shot him a price and they took it. After writing the check, I drove the car home. Ugly as sin, the car drove like a dream. I got to the house and did our checkbook. I balanced the check that the person gave us with the check that I had just written for the car. The difference between the two left us with plenty left over. I had a thought; "I

    36. Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid

    36. Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid

    Some things in life are better left unsaid. We are so quick to say our own piece of what we believe yet we don't gather all of the facts before we throw them all up on other people. That has been the reason I haven't written in the last few days. I would go to type something and save it as a draft yet end up deleting it. Why? It is better left unsaid.

    What would happen if we did the same in our everyday life?  We type out our thoughts in our own mind, review, perform the spell check and grammatical errors before hitting publish. We read it again and decide to trash it instead of publishing it. Our world would be free from the issues that we have!

    I want to challenge both you and me to not publish unless it is appropriate to build those around us up instead of tearing them down.

    35. Don't Worry About the Small Stuff

    35. Don't Worry About the Small Stuff

    It has now been two years since my departure from the ministry. That’s hard to believe. To think that the near-decade that I was there flew by, these past two seem faster. Maybe it is because I am older or perhaps it is because we are busier. One thing that I do know is that I have learned so much in that time. Here are 5 things that I learned;

    1. Breaking up is hard to do. When they told me I was fired, I honestly felt numb. I did not have a clear direction other than my family now was thrown under the bus.  It was difficult. After a few hours, I probably cried more than I had in a very long time. I caught me off guard that I would be this emotional. Fortunately, I got to say bye in my own way to all of those I left behind.
    2. Change is inevitable. No matter what phase you are in your life, the change will happen. Whether it is good or bad, change is inevitable.  And change is good.  When we stay stagnant for too long, we find ourself complacent and bored.
    3. You are replaceable. I worked so hard at that job that I was trying to make myself indispensable. The problem with that is that we are all replaceable. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you are not the hottest thing in the fire. You, my friend, are replaceable.
    4. Know your worth. I am not saying this in pride. I am saying this, though, as a fact. The person you work for does not know all of your qualities, your abilities, and the like. They have limited knowledge. Don’t sell yourself short!
    5. Not everyone has your best in mind. Just because someone has the label of Christian, Believer, Child of God, etc. etc. does not mean that they have your best in mind.  I don’t think that it is intended that they have their own agenda in mind. With that said, your agenda does not matter to them.

    These are just a few things I have learned.

    Episode 30 - Great Things Come From Great Pressure

    Episode 30 - Great Things Come From Great Pressure

    I had a profound epiphany day while working in a local coffee shop. I had lost my job a few weeks prior and the pressure was on to get something in the pipeline.
     This was that "something" which I needed.

    I learned a lot in the short time I was there. One of my favorite things was making espresso shots. In order to get a shot, you had to pull it. You would put the grounded coffee in the espresso portafilter and stamp it. If you fail to stamp it, the espresso was weak and oily.

    However, when you apply that pressure from the stamp - the perfect shot happens!
     In 2 Corinthians 2:9, Paul made the following statement;

    "Each time he said, "My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness." So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses so that the power of Christ can work through me."

    If God allowed Paul the relief he asked for, we may not have the fruit from that labor. While we're being pressed, it's important to know that great things come from the pressure!

    I will leave you with this from James 1:2-4;

    "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
     May God use the pressure in your life to pull the perfect shot!

    Episode 29 - The Key To Answered Prayers - It's Not What You May Think

    Episode 29 - The Key To Answered Prayers - It's Not What You May Think

    "To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing."
     -Martin Luther

    The other day, I was reading about prayer and was reading in Luke 11 where Jesus was teaching the people how to pray. In this teaching, he told them a story regarding a man who was in need who went to his neighbor and asked for help. The neighbor was inconvenienced and didn’t want to get up. In verse 8, Jesus said a powerful statement; “But I tell you this though he won’t do it for friendship’s sake, if you keep knocking long enough, he will get up and give you whatever you need because of your shameless persistence. And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.

    The phrase shameless persistence is what stuck out to me. I read the note out of my study bible and it reads “Persistence, or boldness, in prayer overcomes our insensitivity, not God’s. To practice persistence does more to change our heart and mind than his, and it helps understand and express the intensity of our need. Persistence in prayer helps us to recognize God’s work.”

    The question often asked is “If God honors our persistence, then why does it take so long for it to come to pass?” Daniel experienced this in Daniel 10 when he had been praying for the nation. In fact, he prayed and fasted for 21 days before an answer came. The angel of the Lord appeared to Daniel and said in verse 12 “Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer. But for twenty-one days the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia blocked my way. Then Michael, one of the archangels came up to help me and I left him there with the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia. Now I am here to explain…”

    Just prior to that, the messenger told Daniel this in verse 11; “And the man said to me, ‘Daniel, you are very precious to God, so listen carefully to what I have to say to you. Stand up, for I have been sent to you.’” You are so important to God and He values your prayers. In Chapter 9, Gabriel said to Daniel in verse 22, ‘Daniel, I have come here to give you insight and understanding. The moment you began

    Episode 28 - Leave a Legacy Worth Having

    Episode 28 - Leave a Legacy Worth Having

    "If you live like no one else, later you can live like no one else." Dave Ramsey

    In the fall of 2004, I found myself in a place of “security.” I had a beautiful truck, a decent paying job, friends, and freedom. I moved into a decent apartment in Memphis and I was ready to conquer the world. That was until I was not expecting to be fired in the middle of the month of December. I had accumulated a lot of debt at that time and had no means to pay it. At one point, I worked three jobs and paid as much as I could to get it all taken care of. I had always told myself “I’ll charge it to the card and pay it off at the end of the month.” The old saying “the road to ruin was paved with good intentions” was the motto at this point in my life. I knew that it wouldn’t all be good when at the end of the month if I had a job.

    Less than 6 months later I found myself at the Shelby County Court House filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy and living back with my parents. I had always been the and now I had to face the music of my poor decisions. The shackles and chains of this bankruptcy haunted me for many years after it happened.

    I met my beautiful wife to be in 2006 after I moved to St. Louis to start my life over. I have always tried to be open and honest about my past with anyone to whom I had a relationship with. I was met with a lot of grace and mercy regarding this past from her and her parents. At this point, I had not incurred any more debt; however, we weren’t doing anything to attack it after we got married. It wasn’t until 2008 that I finally listened to a well-known expert on money that the borrower was truly a slave to the lender. I truly became a slave to those of whom I owed money to.

    Sara and I began the journey of freedom in 2008. We found ourselves with nearly $14,000 in debt from my student loans (FYI…Student Loans are not able to be bankrupted unless you're dead.) To you, that may scoff and say “I wish I only owe that much.” But for a couple who had only been married a short time with one child on the way and an income below poverty leave; this was impossible. Then we decided to throw a wrench into the gear. Sara was pregnant with our 2nd child and we made the decision for her to come home full-time. We knew that Go

    Episode 27 - Put Fear In Its Place

    Episode 27 - Put Fear In Its Place

    "Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear." Mark Twain

    Recently, I read Jon Acuff’s book Start which is a New York Times Best Seller that tackles the issue of staying average and moving into awesome. It’s easy for us to stay average as fathers. When we get up in the morning, it is much easier to pop something in the toaster and run out the door than to sit down and spend time in the Word. It is easier to run through the day living mediocre and never changing than to try to become a better father, husband, employee, etc. Right now, I am at that place. I looked at myself in the mirror recently and said that I don’t want to be that parent that sits on the couch and watches television all day. I don’t want to be the man who says, “maybe tomorrow.” I don’t want to ever stop growing as a father, as a husband, as a leader, etc.

    Right now, I am at a place where I am seeing our dreams potentially come to pass. It is here I am reminded of what Paul said in I Corinthians 16:9, Paul had arrived in Corinth and was teaching the word of God. He made a bold statement that forever changed the paradigm of my thinking. Has anyone ever told you that if God is in it then it will be easy? Paul found this to be untrue. “For a wide door of opportunity for effectual (service) has opened to me (there, a great promising one), and (there are) many adversaries.” Paul was getting ready to unleash some great things from God and it was not going to be easy for him.

    I am there. I see great things that are great opportunities for my family. However, there are days of great opposition whether it be people or finances or whatever the case may be, there is a great opposition to you bringing your family higher. Jon’s subtitle for his book is “punching fear in the face.” In that, he talks about the different voices that we hear as people of vision. Fathers hear the same voices when leading their families. His suggestion, whi
