In response to a recent survey, an audience member asked, “How do you get your motor running? Is it okay to put the car in Park for a while? Are detours good or bad?” This prompt got us thinking about how much our decluttering process can be like a road trip. This episode discusses how detours can derail your progress or make you push harder and stay committed.  For me, the most current detour has been a close family member's passing and the very recent death of a beloved teammate. 

On a recent family trip, we missed our exit off the freeway. Traffic on the freeway was terrible, so instead of trying to turn around and get back to the missed exit, we decided to take a detour to a back roads way to get to our destination.

That detour ended up being the best part of the trip! We ended up on a small road where we only saw a few other cars and we saw incredible scenery we would have missed if we had taken the road we were supposed to take. Yes, it added time to our trip- especially since I had to pull over and get pictures- but it also added a rich, beautiful experience that will remain a happy memory!

This experience is a true metaphor for our lives, so many times we end up having to take a detour. At the time, the detour feels frustrating...it may take longer, it may not be the road everyone else is one, it may be a bit lonely....but it often ends up being the most beautiful experience that opens up new pathways for us.

Back when Casey Royer was a young lad living at home, his good friend Mike Ness stayed with him for a brief stint.  Being bored young teenagers they decided to start a band in Casey’s bedroom called Social Distortion.  On this episode, Casey brings in a cassette tape with a band practice song from the first iteration of the band Social Distortion.  The recorded song on the tape is called Total Control with Mike Ness on guitar, Casey Royer on drums and Tom Corvin on vocals.  Casey also dives into talking about the Detours, Adolescents, Radolescents, and, of course, DI.  So, sit back, grab your favorite beverage and enjoy a little bit of Orange County punk rock history.  

I know I've talked about resistance before, but today I'm sharing a very personal and timely example from my own life about resisting what we need the most in that moment.

It can be difficult to tell the difference between when it's something that isn't resonating with you and when it's something that you are subconsciously resisting.

It's my hope for you that after hearing my story, you can take a loving look at things in your own life with new eyes; looking for where you might be resisting the very thing you need to grow.

In today's episode, we  salute our veterans, and take a walk back down memory lane, with Our Dad, who experience a detour that changed the trajectory of his life, possibly for the better.
